Vladimir Lenin's Communist Revolution October 1917

Bolsheviks, Reds, Communists are all the same

leads a revolution of the peasants & industrial workers• against the Provisional Government democratic govt that replaced the Czar when he fled

the throne> majority of people were upset with this new democratic govt

– doesn't support the majority of the ppl b/c majority not rich

"he promises the people peace, land and bread"

leads w/absolute force becomes a dictator

imprisons poltical figures

estabs secret police force

promotes a new govt for the benefit of the poor & working class

the workers & peasants have no land, freedom, rights & Communism works for them

communism creates a shared society equality amongst all workers in a given industry• Economic System

> Sets up the NEP New Economic Policy– allows some private business to still operate regardless that he is a Communist

Communist & also rules as a dictator• Kills Leon Trotsky the rightful ruler after Lenin

wants Russia to flourish hold on to similar language, culture, faith, customs

creates the USSR Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

added new lands to USSR Ukraine, etc.

gulags poiltical enemies are sent to gulags in Siberia to be killed/ die

not Russian, not of established of the state, different political vision, if you spoke out against Stalin or the govt

Stalin's 5 Year Plans• took control of all farms in USSR & put them under the state's control

> all the peasants worked on these state/Collective Farms> in 5 years take control of them all & then reassess every 5 years> farm land taken from the rich land owners (kulaks) and they were eithert arrested/killed> wasn't a success overall first 5 year plans no gains at all > no crop rotation kills the nutrients in the soil so not enough food being grown

– led to starvation• goal is to help USSR advance & catch up with the rest of the world • Industrial Development

> no steel production over 10 year period – takes ppls metal objects to melt them down

• STalin hides the true effects of the plans & communism
