Japa of the Nityānanda & Gaurāṅga MantrasWith the Hare Krishna Mahāmantra
By H.H. Bhaktiratna Sadhu Swami +919045050450nitaigaurdharma.com [email protected]
1.The Gaurāṅga Mantra is Chanted in Japa byŚrīla Shivānanda Sena in Shri Chaitanya-charitāmṛta and the Japa Process is Explained byŚrīla Bhaktivinoda and Śrīla Prabhupāda:“āpane bolāna more, ihā yadi jāni, āmāra iṣṭa-mantra jāni’ kahena āpani”“‘gaura-gopāla mantra’ tomāra chāri akṣara, aviśvāsa chāḍa, yei kariyācha antara”(Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta 3.2.24,31)
(24) Śrīla Shivānanda Sena (Virādutigopī) thought, “If Śrīla NakulaBrahmachārī himself calls mepersonally and reveals to me my ownworshipable iṣṭa-japa mantra, then I shallbelieve that Lord Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu hasactually manifested in his body.” (31)Understanding his mind, Śrīla NakulaBrahmachārī called him and said, “You arechanting JAPA of the four-syllable Gaura-gopālamantra (Gaurāṅga). Now please give up thedoubts that have resided within your heart aboutthe Lord’s direct presence (āvesh) in me.”
kīrtana is done not as a replacement to but inaddition to Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra. No follower ofŚrīla Prabhupāda should stop or discourage othersfrom additionally chanting japa of the Gaurāṅgamantra because he himself says that it is on thesame level as the mahāmantra.
If one says that Kṛṣṇa’s Name can be chanted on atulasī mālā but not Gaurāṅga’s Name, then one isdifferenciating between the two Names andLords. He or she is thus a victim of Kaliyuga as perJaiva Dharma. We offer tulasī leaves to both LordKrishna and Lord Gauranga. So why can’t we chantjapa of either of Their Names on a tulasī mālā?Tulasī is also Gaurāṅga’s dasī.
Partial incarnations of Lord Gaurāṅgalike Lord Rāma, Lord Nṛsingha etc.have Their own japa mantras so whycan’t the original Lord Gaurāṅga haveHis own japa mantra? As per JaivaDharma, just like Kevala Kṛṣṇavādiswho chant only Kṛṣṇa’s Name in japa, there aresouls with eternal form only in Gaurāṅga’spastimes in the Navadvipa part of Goloka. Thismeans that they primarily chant Gaurāṅga’s Namein japa. Also Jaiva Dharma states that our Gaudiya
3. Q. Why did the Acharyas like ShrilaBhaktivinoda, Shrila Bhaktivedanta SwamiPrabhupada etc. recommend Gauranga MantraJapa openly in their universal books (Cc 3.2.31etc.) but not practically implement this Japa?
A. The Japa of a confidential Mantra likeGauranga is practically introduced in this worldonly at the right time and circumstances on theorder of Lord Nityananda Balarama Himself. Sothe Acharyas may write about it but leave it tobe implemented by their humble followers in thefuture due to their own independentdesire fully knowing Lord Nitaai’sdesire.
This did not stop the Acharyas fromopenly recommending the japaof the Gauranga Mantra in theirbooks because they knew that when the time isright i.e. when Lord Nitaai wants, some of theirown future followers will practically implementGauranga Mantra Japa in their daily chantingsimply on the basis of following these universalinstructions left behind in their books. This doesnot make these followers higher than theAcharyas since it is their vani which inspires all.
Purport by Bhaktiratna Sādhu Swāmī:
“The words “iṣṭa-mantra tomāra” mean “yourjapa mantra”. Śrīla Shivānanda Sena was thuschanting the Gaurāṅga mantra softly or silentlyon a japa mālā. If he was singing it only inkīrtana and not on a japa mālā, many wouldhave known it already and thus it would not beneeded to ask Śrīla Nakula about his secretmantra. By definition, an iṣṭa-mantra is receivedby initiation and chanted in japa. Hence the japachanting of the Gaurāṅga mantra on a tulasīmālā and it’s initiation are authorized processeswhich should be accepted by all Gauravādisor Gauḍīyās (irrespective of whetherthey want to practice it themselvesor not) because they were practicedby Śrīla Shivānanda Sena (Virādutigopī) and many other Āchāryas.
When Shrīla Swāmī Prabhupādauses the words “accept”, “chants” and “on thesame level” for the Gauranga Mantra, he isauthorizing it’s chanting in both japa & kīrtana(not just in kīrtana). This is confirmed by hisdirect approval to chant japa of Gaurāṅga to theIran student on March 14, 1975. It’s japa &
prohibition for japa does not apply to the 4-syllable Gauranga (Gaura Gopala) Mantra whichis the authorized Japa Mantra from ShriChaitanya-charitamrita chanted on a tulasi malaby many of our Acharyas. In fact Shrila SwamiPrabhupada himself recommends GaurangaMantra Japa in C.c. 3.2.31 by stating thatanyone who chants the Gauranga Mantra is onthe same level as a Hare Krishna Mahamantrachanter. Of course, we fully respect andaccept those who don’t chant GaurāṅgaMantra Japa since they still chantthe Pancha Tattva Mantra andGauranga’s Name during kirtanaand in Gaudiya bhajans.
On one hand Shrila SwamiPrabhupada states that the PanchaTattva Mantra should not be chanted in japa andnot more than 3 times in kirtana, and on theother hand, he states in Cc 1.8.31 at threeplaces: “In the beginning one should veryregularly chant Shri Gaurasundara’s holy nameand then chant the holy name of LordNityananda..”, “..the chanting of Shri ChaitanyaMahaprabhu’s Name is more essential thanthe chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra”
Acharyas enter the eternal pastimes in two spiritualforms, one in Gaurapitha and the other inKrishnapitha, where they worship the Lord bysimultaneously chanting Gauranga’sName and Hari Naam respectively.
Lord Gaura states in Cb 3.4.126,“sarvatra prachara haibe mora nam”“My Holy Name of Gauranga willbe preached in every city and villageon this earth”. How can it spread in this way unlesspeople chant it in japa daily? Singing it inoccasionally in kirtana is not the same as chantingit in japa as a daily vow. The predicted golden ageof 10000 years will reach it’s peak both by the japaand kirtana of Gauranga’s Name since it qualifies theKaliyuga souls to offenselessly chant the HareKrishna Mahamantra with pure love.
2.The Gauranga Mantra & the Pancha Tattva Mantra
The Pancha Tattva Mantra is technicially not a JapaMantra since we don't have proof of any of ourAcharyas chanting it in japa. Thus Shrila SwamiPrabhupada told a few times not to chant it in japabut only in kirtana and before japa. This is followedeven by Gauranga Mantra chanters. However this
and “A neophyte student who is not sufficientlyeducated or enlightened should not indulge in theworship of Shri Radha and Krishna or the chantingof the Hare Krishna mantra. Even if he does so, hecannot get the desired result. One should thereforechant the Names of Nitaai Gaura and worshipThem without false prestige”.
Some say that he is talking only about chanting thePancha Tattva Mantra in the above quotes since heends the purport with it. But as we also know thathe has expressly forbidden to chant the PanchaTattva Mantra very regularly in japa or kirtana sohow can these quotes apply to the PanchaTattva Mantra? How can chanting it just a fewtimes a day be called “very regularly” when “veryregularly” for Mahamantra means atleast 16 rounds daily. Our humbleunderstanding is that he is talkingabout the bona-fide Japa MantrasNityananda & Gauranga here. This isalso confirmed by referring to theoriginal commentaries of SrilaBhaktisiddhanta & Srila Bhaktivinodato the same Cc verse 1.8.31, which specificallyglorify the chanting of the two Names of Nityananda& Gauranga but don’t mention the PT Mantra.

6Purport by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura (Amṛta-pravāha-bhāṣya): “gaura-gopāla mantra gauravādigaṇa ‘gaurāṅga’ nāme chatura-akshara, gaura-mantra ke uddeśya karena; kevala kṛṣṇavādi gaṇaei, gaura-gopāla-mantra śabde rādha-kṛṣṇera,chatura-akṣara-mantrake uddeśya karena.”
“All the devotees of Lord Gaura accept the 4-syllables in the name of ‘Gaurāṅga’, the GauraMantra, as the Gaura-gopāla mantra. The exclusivedevotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa accept ‘Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa’ as theGaura-gopāla mantra.”
Purport by Śrīla A. C. B. Swāmī Prabhupāda:“Shrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura explains the Gaura-gopāla mantra in his Amṛta-pravāha-bhāṣya.Worshipers of Śrī Gaurasundara accept the foursyllables gau-ra-aṅ-ga as the Gaura mantra, butpure worshipers of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa accept the foursyllables rā-dhā kṛṣ-ṇa as the Gaura-gopāla mantra. However, Vaiṣṇavas consider Śrī CaitanyaMahāprabhu non-different fromRādhā-Kṛṣṇa (śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanyarādhā-kṛṣṇa nahe anya). Therefore one who chants themantra “gaurāṅga” and one who chants the namesof Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are on the same level.”

Prabhupada, Shrutakirti das said in UK that heheard SP chant Gauranga, Gauranga, Gauranga.many times during his japa of the Mahamantra.
8. Is Nityānanda Mantra Japa in the Scriptures?
The Name ‘Nityānanda’ is the 5-syllable NitaaiBalarama Japa Mantra (ni-tya-ā-na-nda) asexplained in Cc 1.8.23: ‘nityananda’ balite hayakrsna-premodaya, aulaya sakala anga, ashruganga vaya. “Simply by chanting the Name‘Nityananda’, anyone will awaken one’s pure love forKrishna & incessant tears will flow from the eyes.”
Cc 1.11.33: navadvipe purusottama panditamahasaya, nityananda-name yanra mahonmadahaya. “Shrila Purusottama Pandita, a resident ofNavadvipa, was Stoka-Krishna. He would becomealmost mad by chanting the Name of ‘Nityananda’.”
Cc 1.11.34: balarama dasa krsna prema-rasasvadi,nityananda-name haya parama unmadi. “Balaramadasa alway tasted Krishna’s nectarean love fully. Hewould chant ‘Nityananda’ and become greatlyecstatic and totally intoxicated with love.”Cb 1.9.385: ‘nityananda’ hena bhakta sunileshravane, avashya paibe krishnacandra sei jane.
or minimize the japa of the Hare KrishnaMahamantra with any other Mantra. At the sametime, no one can be stopped from implementing thebona-fide and universal instructions of the Acharyaslike Gauranga Mantra Japa since every soul has anequal right to follow the Lord's direct order (kahagauranga, laha gaurangera naam re) which isto chant the offenseless Holy Name of Gauranga injapa & kirtana along with the Hare KrishnaMahamantra.
The scriptures also say that there aredifferent transcendental moods evenamong our Gaudiya Acharyas likebeing more partial to Krishna or beingmore partial to Gauranga. Both areequally divine. For example, ShrilaNarahari Sarkara was Gauravadi and thus was moreattached to chanting and preaching Gauranga’sName: “gaura boliya jauka jivane, kichu nacahibo ara”, “Let me die while chanting Gauranga’sName. I have no other desire.” So all Acharyas maynot implement it since they have different moods.
Navadvip Dham Mahatmya NDM 2.49: “atishayagopane rakhinu jei naam..”, “Even the LordHimself kept His own Holy Name of Gauranga very
At the right time on the order of Lord Nitaai, though not physically present, it is the Acharyasthemselves who empower their followerswith the sincere desire to implement theirhitherto unimplemented instructions likeGauranga Mantra Japa & then inspire them thatthe time is now right to practically implement it.
An example is the 18-syllable Gopala Mantragiven by initiation to and chanted as japa byGopakumara in Brihad Bhagavatamrita to attainGoloka. It was not widely implemented by ShrilaBhaktivinoda or Shrila Gaura Kishore eventhough they fully knew about it's glories. Butlater Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada gave itto his disciples in initiation as a japa mantrato help in the chanting of the Mahamantra sinceit was the right time to practically implement itas it was the wish of Adiguru Lord Nitaai Himself.
The Gauranga Mantra is not anewly invented japa mantra nor aspeculated one with rasabhas likenitaai gaura radhe shyam... It isalready chanted as Japa in thescriptures. No one can invent newMantras nor can anyone ever give up, replace
hidden and secret..” Hence it is no surprise ifsome of the Acharyas also did the same waitingfor the Lord’s desire & the appropriate time forit’s japa to be practically implemented.
4.One worships Krishna by Gauranga mantrajapa and worships Gauranga by Hare Krishnamantra japa. So one can remember Gaurangawhile chanting Hare Krishna. Why is there needto chant Japa of Gauranga’s Name separately?
A. For siddhas both Names are thesame. But for sadhakas, there are10 offenses in the Hare Krishnamantra japa whereas there are nosuch considerations in the japa ofthe Nityananda and Gaurangamantras as per Cc 1.8.31: caitanyanityanande nahi esaba vichara, naam laiteprema dena vahe ashrudhar. “The 10 offensesare not considered by Nityananda andGauranga. One will instantly get pure lovesimply by chanting Their Names and tears ofpure love will continuously flow from the eyes.”
Shrila Bhaktivinoda writes: namaparadhamsakalam vinashya, chaitanya namashrita
displeasure at this but He was internally verypleased when Shrila Shrivasa established in frontof Him in Gambhira that even He cannot stopthe chanting of Hi Name from spreading all overthe universe. Lord Nitaai & Lord Advaita are theOriginal Preachers of the Gauranga Mantra &Shivananda Sena is the Gauranga Mantrācharya.
7.Who else has chanted Gauranga mantra japa?
A. Lord Nitaai says in Navadvipa DhamMahatmya 9.10: kichi nahi khaya, nidra nahijaya, gaura naam kare japa. “The SevenSages did not eat & sleep & constantly chantedJapa of Gauranga’s Name in Madhyadvipa.”Brahma imparted them the Gauranga Mantra.Parvati said after receiving Gauranga MantraDiksha from Shiva in NDM 6.47: eita je shunechimantra-tantra tatkal, se sab janinu matra jiverajanjala. “After hearing the Gauranga Mantra, Ifeel that the mantras and tantras I have heardso far are all only entanglements for the soul.”
Devakinandan das said that Lord Nitaai sangafter bhaja gauranga: “gauranga bhajile, gauranga japile, hoy dukhera avasan re.” One-time personal assistant of Shrila Swami
Madhavendra Puri: “If a devotee simply hearsthe Name ‘Nityananda’, he or she will mostcertainly attain Lord Krishna.” “Anyone who oncechants the word ‘Nityananda’ becomes purifiedand My pure devotee.” (Ch. Mangala, Madhya)“The purity of the whole world will awaken bychanting Nityananda’s Name and all will becomeself-realized & great devotees.” (Cb 2.3.134 p)NDM 1.51: kalijiver aparadha asankhya durvara, gaura naam vina tara nahika uddhara.“The offenses of Kaliyuga souls are unlimited &unsurmountable. Hence they can never ever bedelivered without chanting Gauranga’s Name.”NDM 1.48: nitaai chaitanya bali jei jiva dake, suvimala krishnaprem anveshaye take. “Thepurest love of Krishna comes searching afterone who calls Them by Nityananda & Gauranga.”
worshiping Lord Gauranga since He wanted toremain secret and hidden as long as He waspresent. Those whose intelligence is not duplicitouscan see these mantras in shastra & chant them.”
Another reason for this is given in NavadvipaShataka 17: chaitanya-caranambhoje, yasyasti pritiracyuta, vrindata vishayos tasya, bhaktisyac chata-janmani. “Only those who had devotion to theControllers of Vrindavana Shri Shri Radha Krishna(and chanted Their Names) for the past 100 lives, develop staunch attachment to the lotus feet ofLord Gauranga and in the chanting of His Name.”
6. Is Lord Gauranga displeased by chanting HisName along with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra?
A. Why would Shrila Shivananda, Lord Nitaai, LordAdvaita, Shuka, the Seven Sages, Sarvabhauma,Parvati, Surabhi Cow, Indra, Markandeya, Narada,Suvarna Sena, Ramanujacharya, Bhishmadeva, thelist goes on and on and also Shrimati RadharaniHerself with Satyabhama etc. in Chaitanya MangalaSutrakhanda 527: “hema gaura kalevara, mantrachari akshara”, chant the 4-syllable GaurangaMantra to worship Him, if He is displeased by it?Sometimes Lord Gauranga externally tried to feign
manavanam. “All the 10 offenses to Hari Naam aredestroyed by taking full shelter of Gauranga’sName.” Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta writes in hisAnubhashya to Cc 1.8.31: krishna naam aparadheravichara karena, gaura-nityanandera naameaparadhera vichara nai...aparadhi thaka-kaleugaura-nityanandera nama grahanakari nama karitekarite aparadha mocanante nama-phala labhakarena. “Krishna’s Name considers offenseswhereas Nityananda & Gauranga’s Names don’t. Soas long as one is offensive, these two mostbeneficial Names should be chanted veryregularly (obviously this means both in japa andkirtana). Then offenses will cease and one will getthe fruit of Naam which is pure love.”
5.Why is the Japa Mantra for Gauranganot even known to many Gaudiyas?
A. Babaji in Jaiva Dharma Chp 14: jetantra prakasya-avataraganera mantraprakasarupe varnana kariyachena, sei tantreichannavatarera mantra channarupe likhiyarakhiyachena. yanhadera buddhi kutila naya, taharabujhiya laite parena. “The scriptures that openlygive mantras for worshipping the openly manifestedincarnations, secretly reveal the mantras for
