2010 NEW J ER S EY J A CKA L S GAME NOTE SSUNDAY, JUNE 27 - BROCKTON 5, NEW JERSEY 4 (at Brockton, Mass.)Argenis Reyes clubbed his first home run of the season, but Wayne Lundgren struck out a season-high eight batters to lead the Brockton Rox to a 5-4 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium. With the victory, the Rox have now won 11 of their last 12 contests after taking three of four from New Jersey in the weekend series

As the teams danced around a light drizzle throughout most of the contest, the Jackals took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Reyes lined a two-run shot to right center following a leadoff walk by center fielder Jeff Grose.

Jackals’ starter Nick Asselin held the Rox off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning, when catcher Chris Grossman connected on a leadoff home run to pull Brockton within one at 2-1. Asselin was lifted in the sixth after the Rox strung together three straight hits to begin the frame and tied the score at two on an RBI base knock by second baseman Scott Wearne. Reliever Mike Pontius entered with two runners aboard and no outs and surrendered an RBI single to first baseman Clyde Williams on a 12-pitch at-bat before a sacrifice fly by Grossman gave Brockton a 4-2 edge.

In the top of the seventh, the Jackals evened the score on a two-out, two-run double into the right field corner by catcher Jordan Newton, but Brockton regained the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the frame on a no-out Chris Valencia sacrifice fly following back-to-back singles by third baseman Derek Kinzler and shortstop Dominic Ramos.

In the top of the ninth, Brockton righty Hunter Davis retired the Jackals’ side in order to notch his second save of the season.

Lundgren (4-1) earned his 26th win in a Brockton uniform, tying him with current Worcester Tornadoes’ hurler John Kelly for the most wins in Rox franchise history. The Australian righty tossed eight frames and yielded four runs on nine hits while walking just one batter. In his sixth start of the season, Asselin did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Jackals’ reliever Edgar Estanga (0-1) surrendered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to take the loss.

Offensively for New Jersey, shortstop Mike DeJesus singled three times in four at-bats while Reyes went 2-for-4. Reyes and Grose each scored twice in the losing effort.

Jackal Bites: Following Sunday’s loss, the Jackals are 2-9 over their last 11 contests… Asselin, who earned his only win of the season when he tossed seven shutout innings against Brockton on June 3 in Little Falls, had held the Rox scoreless for 11 innings before Grossman’s leadoff homer in the fifth inning on Sunday… Game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Sussex is the make-up of the June 13 contest between the Jackals and Skyhawks that was rained out at Skylands Park. The game is being played at Yogi Berra Stadium because the Jackals do not play the Skyhawks at Sussex again until the second half of the season.

DOUBLE THE FUNOn Saturday, June 19 against Quebec at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals tied a Can-Am League single-game record when they turned five double plays. New Jersey recorded nine twin-killings in the three-game set.

2010 NEW J ER S EY J A CKA L S GAME NOTE S

BRUISED AND BATTEREDOver the first 20 games of the 2010 season, five New Jersey players spent a total of 41 games on the disabled list. Saturday, June 19 marked the first time this season that New Jersey didn’t have an injured player on the dis-abled list or inactive list. That list doesn’t include rookie OF Matt Stiffler, who injured his hamstring on June 4 and was released the next day because the Jackals disabled list was full.

LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKAL-APPROVEDThis offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lob-ban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Que-bec qualified for 10th.

MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVORThree current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

BACK IN THE NEW JERSEY GROOVEThe Jackals opening-day roster included seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting aver-age would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.

FIVE-STAR QUALITYIn addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League man-ager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 bat-ting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

ALUMNI UPDATESince 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations. Several no-table former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball.

Left-hander • Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander • Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Valdez returned to Yogi Berra Stadium on June 21 to throw out the first pitch prior to the Jackals game against the Worcester Tornadoes.Former Jackals’ first baseman • John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason after spending 2009 in the Marlins system and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes, where he is teammates with outfielder Timo Perez. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26 and was named the PCL’s Player of the Month for May (.415-7-25 in 27 games).Myron Leslie• (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander • Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a re-liever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

2009: A RETROSPECTIVEDespite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (27-20) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sus-sex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.

J A CKA L S MANAGER JOE C A L F AP I E T RA

JOE CALFAPIETRAMANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON

The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm.

In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship.

Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapi-etra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title.

The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
