From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del PárrocoNew Mission Statement, Ancient Mission

You will notice on the cover of this week’s bulletin that our mission statement has changed. The old mission statement was

not bad, but it was wordy, and no one really knew it. Our mission statement is supposed to drive everything that we do as a parish, and it can’t be effective if no one even knows what it is.

Our new mission statement is taken from Christ’s command to the Apostles after His resurrection as found in Matthew 28:19. This passage is often called the Great Commission. This is the mission that Christ gave to the whole Church, and so, as part of the Church, it makes sense for it to be our mission here at St. Charles Borromeo as well.

But our mission statement has to be more than just words on a page. It should be a lived reality. Everything that we do as a parish should fl ow from and refl ect back to our mission. As was discussed at our Town Hall meetings, when we do the same things over and over again, we can start to forget why we do them. We can become so caught up in the things that we do that we forget the mission.

Over the coming year, I am asking all of us as a parish to refocus on our mission to make disciples of all nations. This mission applies not just to the parish as a whole, but also to all of our organizations and ministries as well as to each of us as individual parishioners. Each of us are members of the parish. And so each of us have a share in the mission of the parish, just as every employee is part of a company’s mission.

Over the next several weeks, I will be using this column to go through the parts of our parish mission statement to discuss what they mean for us as a parish and as individuals. I invite everyone to consider how they help fulfi ll our mission.

Giving Tree 2019Parish Picnic is in the books, so it's time to turn our attention to the Christmas Season... Giving Tree is our St. Vincent de Paul's effortto help make Christmas special for families in need in our local community. Here's how you can help:

Parish PiChristmato help comm

*REFER: Families who live in our area are referred by school personnel, parishioners, or self-referred and must demonstrate that

they are a family in crisis/need by SVDP.

*DONATE FOOD: In November, St. Charles Borromeo classes hold their annual Food Drive. Food items gathered by classes become our Christmas food baskets to provide multiple meals for the holiday season.

*ADOPT A FAMILY: Families, friends and coworkers adopt a full family unit and spoil

them with minimal gifts plus extra special items. Contact Michelle Hawkins if you are interested in adopting a full family. Any size family can be adopted.

*PICK ORNAMENTS: Giving Trees go up in the narthex on Nov. 13, giving you an opportunity to choose items (ornaments) off the tree to shop for and wrap. All wrapped gifts need to be returned to church no later than Dec. 7.

*SORT: SVDP and Mini Vinnies prepare these packages for pick up on Dec. 20.

*DONATE MONEY: Some parishioners want to participate but are unable to shop for items! A check made out to SVDP and noted for Giving Tree will be earmarked for meat purchased for meals as well as missing gift items.

We hope everyone will participate as we join together to brighten the Christmas season for those less fortunate in our community!

Contact Michelle Hawkins at 636-795-6417 or [email protected] with questions or for more information.

Tours at the Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

Come visit the holy grounds of The Shrine, the sacred home of French missionary St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, and bring your prayers and petitions to the site where Philippine is buried (located at 619 N. Second St. on the Academy of the Sacred Heart campus).

The Shrine is open daily. Docents are available to offer tours through the historical 1835 section from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You would be able to see the rooms where Philippine lived her last ten years of her life and gaze into the little room where she died.

If you have a ministry or organization that would like to visit the Shrine and learn more about Philippine, special tours can be arranged. We also do tours for school groups, Confi rmation classes and scout troops.

Please come spend some time with St. Philippine. Call our

offi ce at 636-946-6127 to arrange a tour or to confi rm that a docent will be available when you visit.

The Young Adult Group is open to anyone in their 20’s or 30’s. Children are welcome at most events. We are a ministry for young people to come together to build community, grow in faith and share life with one another.

Find us on Facebook: St. Charles Borromeo Young Adult Group. If you’d like to be added to our email list, email Kristin Williams at [email protected].

Join us on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at the monthly Young Adult Mass at the Old Cathedral; drinks and social hour to follow. See our Facebook page for more details.

AY✝ ADULTSYOUNGSCB Mini Vinnies Freez‛n 4 a Reason

SCB Mini Vinnies will be Freez’n 4 A Reason on Nov. 9-10. To raise awareness and understanding of the plight of the homeless, students will set up and reside outside on the tree lot in a “Box City” for 18 hours. The parish is invited to visit Box City to talk with the students.

Homelessness is not just a big city issue; it can be found right here in our parish boundaries. The SCB St. Vincent de Paul assisted 34 homeless families and 129 temporarily homeless fl ood victims in the last 22 months.

Many of those assisted were single mothers and their children. These numbers do not completely represent the amount of good that SVDP does in the effort to prevent homelessness. The number of referrals for the homeless from outside our parish boundaries to other agencies, such as Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Service and St. Patrick Center, are not tracked.

St. Patrick Center SpeakerPlease join the Mini Vinnies on Nov. 9 in the Borromeo Café at 7:30 p.m. for a presentation by Kelly Peach, Senior Director of Communications of the St. Patrick Center. The St. Patrick Center provides opportunities for self-suffi ciency and dignity to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Individuals and families build permanent, positive change in their lives through safe and affordable housing, sound mental and physical health, and employment and fi nancial stability.

8 Oct. 19-20, 2019 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

This is the fi rst of two parables that Jesus tells in Luke 18 about prayer. (The

second will be read at Mass next Sunday.)

This fi rst parable is a lesson in persistence in prayer. (Next Sunday's parable will address attitude in prayer.) While the parable seems to present prayer as nagging God for what we want, such a reading misses the point.

God is not like the judge in the parable, worn down by requests and coerced to respond. The key is found in the description of the judge as corrupt and unjust. Since God can be neither, we must understand Jesus to be saying that if even an unjust judge responds to the persistence of the widow, how much more so will God listen to our prayers. God truly wants to hear our needs and respond generously.

It is the fi nal lament of Jesus that gets to the point of the parable. The lesson is

about the persistence of the one who prays. God wants us to be like the persistent widow, staying in relationship with God, confi dent that God hears and answers prayers.

Then Jesus laments, “Will such faith be found when the Son of Man comes?” In this lament, Jesus notes how easy it can be for us to lose heart.

Oct. 20, Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples to pray always without becoming weary. Indeed our prayer must always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world, and especially for the suffering poor.

As you give your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them.
