Director General’s Message

N. Murugesan

Director General

At the end of the financial year, we are pleased to announce exemplary CPRI’s performance on all the fronts mandated by the Ministry of Power. We have reported sustained growth in receipts, papers published, patents filed and training imparted. This has been possible because of the wonderful support of all the stake holders involved, starting from guidance from Ministry of Power, Our customers and then importantly our own employees and I express sincere thanks to each one.

This quarter, we have started construction on the new wake simulation laboratory. Hitherto the test was carried out on 4 conductor bundles. With the commissioning of this laboratory, 12 conductor bundle can be tested catering to 1200 kV class of transmission lines. The Institute of Inter laboratory Studies, The Netherlands awarded CPRI with CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE for the laboratory performance for the second year, this time in the PCB analysis. Yet again we saw many a utilities from abroad utilizing our Research facilities and we are in line with our goal to emerge as one of the best in the world.

Once again, I invite our stake holders and customer to grow with us and request suggestions to better our services.

MoU with National High Power Test Laboratory

Central Power Research Institute, an autonomous society

under Ministry of Power, Govt of India has entered into an

historic agreement with National High Power Test

Laboratory Pvt. Ltd, a Joint Venture Company of NTPC,

NHPC, POWERGRID, DVC & CPRI for Operation &

Maintenance of the state-of-the-art On-line High Power

Short Circuit Test Facility, for ten years, coming up at Bina

(Madhya Pradesh).

The agreement was signed by Shri.B.V.Raghavaiah, Addl.

Director, CPRI and Dr.Lakshman Hari, CEO, NHPTL on

February 08, 2013 in New Delhi in presence of the

Director General CPRI, Chairman, NHPTL, officials from

Ministry of Power, Govt of India and other dignitaries.

While addressing the event, Shri N. Murugesan, DG, CPRI

stated that the test facility will be professionally managed

to provide full range of Short Circuit testing for the high

power electrical equipment manufacturing industry and

power supply utilities of India and neighboring SAARC,

ASEAN & Middle East Countries in conformance to Indian

and International Standards. At present the existing test

facilities available in India can handle short circuit testing of

transformers up to 90 MVA. Due to the lack of short

08

circuit testing facilities, the large power transformers

specially 100 MVA and above are being sent to overseas

testing labs such as KEMA Netherlands, CESI Italy etc. This,

besides incurring huge cost on transportation and testing

the equipment overseas, causes delay in commissioning of

projects to the tune of 6-9 months. He added that 12th

Plan (2012-17) has envisaged a target of adding 88,425 MW

power generation capacity in the country which calls for

matching Transmission & Distribution Network and hence

the population of transformers to be tested in the Lab is

expected to be quite high.

Shri B.V. Raghavaiah, Addl. Director CPRI while

acknowledging the efforts of NHPTL to set a new

benchmark not only for India but also for rest of the world

added that the project is extremely significant for the

country as it will provide access to world-class testing

facilities locally and will put India on the world stage as an

important destination for testing of 765kV transformers.

Shri B.V. Raghavaiah assured that CPRI will endeavour to

deploy best talents for Operation & Maintenance of the

Test Facility.

Shri Amitava Mallik, Chairman NHPTL explained that the

Phase –I of the project consists of High Voltage

Transformer Testing (HVTR) Lab to test the large power

transformers of 132kV, 220 kV, 400 kV & 765 kV class and

another Medium Voltage Transformer Testing (MVTR

Lab) lab to test the transformers of 11kV to 66 kV Class.

Phase-I is expected to be commissioned by December’

2013. During Phase-II of the project, a High Power

Synthetic (HPS) lab will be established for short circuit

testing of Switchgears (Circuit Breakers) up to 550kV, 63

kA for Short-Circuit duties with synthetic methods and

High Current low Voltage (HCLV) lab for testing high

current withstand capability of electrical equipment such

as LV Bus Bar, LV Contacts, LV breakers, LV

Dis-connectors, LV switchgear, Bushings, CT, up to 400

kA rms with 1100 kA peak. The project will employ highly

advanced technologies including 765kV Make Switch,

Control and Monitoring System (CMS), and associated

substations for 765kV and 400kV, among others.

Computer Unicode Training workshop

The emerging new technologies have made our life and work very simple and easy and thus it is very important to keep

pace with them. Due to the constant change in Microsoft version the language softwares also had to update their version.

To solve this complexity once for all Unicode (universal code) was invented which can be activated in any system having

higher version of Microsoft and it can be read in any system without any software support and easy to work with.

To acquaint the officers/employees of the Institute with the new user friendly Unicode, a computer training workshop

was organized on 12.3.13 at CCAR from 3.00 pm.

Dr. S.N. Mahesh, Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Centre gave a presentation on how to activate Unicode. He showed

the process to download Google Hindi input setup and Unicode tool kit and later explained how to run them and activate

Unicode (Hindi) by accessing regional language option in the control panel. Later he gave hands on practice to work in

Hindi. He also explained how to make use of Google translation to draft notings for official purpose and access

Shabdkosh, an E-dictionary. About 42 officers/ employees participated in this workshop which was a successful

programme.
