RS supports the research and development of pioneering new domestic appliances at Dyson.
Dyson constantly strive for the perfect blend of
product design and engineering in their products.
This ethos stems from James Dyson, founder of
the global vacuum cleaner giant and his desire to make
everyday products that work properly. He has been a design
engineer for more than 40 years and is passionate about new
technology, innovation and engineering design.
TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS“Over the last 25 years, the most significant technological breakthroughs have been the personal computer on the design engineer’s desktop, the chip and electronics,” enthuses James Dyson.
He continues: “These advances have changed the face of engineering completely over the last 25 years, not only in terms of how engineering products are now designed, but also in the testing, analysis and evaluation of those products. And yes, the whole digital environment now has changed things too: CAD/CAM, prototyping, 2D, 3D and all that.”
“In terms of electronics, a very large part of our research and development here at Dyson is in this area. Chip design and electronics are driving what we do.”
THE DYSONDIGITAL MOTOR(DDM)James Dyson explains the use of the new technology: “Our new digital motor for example, is run by a chip instead of using mechanical continuous currents through brushes. It’s a switched reluctance motor that has two phases, the phases being switched on and off using a chip. So it can
go much faster, it’s more reliable and you don’t get all those problems associated with mechanical motors such as commutators breaking up and maintenance issues.
“Basically, all the problems you get with ordinary motors go away and you’re left with a much smaller, lighter, faster motor because of the chip. So that’s a good example of how it has changed things..”
The DDM has a power-to-weight ratio equal to that of a Ferrari sports engine! It is the first ultra-high speed switched reluctance motor to incorporate turbocharger aerodynamics and aerospace materials and is up to 3 times faster (and much smaller) than a typical vacuum cleaner motor.
Developed over ten years by a team of engineers, the DDM is the fastest and highest power density motor ever developed for domestic appliances. It will definitely be part of Dyson’s innovations of the future.
Dyson has become one of the most successful UK businesses in recent years. James Dyson combined entrepreneurial flair with dogged persistence to create and develop his innovative business - launched in the UK in 1993.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTResearching and developing new products and technology that work better is at the core of the Dyson business and much of Dyson’s success comes from research and development. In 2005 Dyson spent around 15% of its annual turnover on R&D, which equates to around £50 million – a very high figure for the vacuum cleaner market.
One person who has aided Dyson in their commitment to new technology is Neil Phillips. Based at Malmesbury, Neil has been with Dyson for 9 years and manages the Technology Applications team – a small dynamic group that works within the Research, Design & Development Department. The team’s responsibility is to conduct brief analysis of new ideas for products and fresh technologies and assess their relevance for future Dyson products.
The team consists of experienced researchers, who continually explore the laws of physics to see how best to mould them into useful enhancements to the Dyson product family. Ideas can come from both within the team and from colleagues at Dyson - as well as from investigations into university research and commercial developments. Technologies and concepts which receive the green light from the Research Review Panel may go on to be developed into a new product by the New Products Development team. No idea is too large or too strange to be considered, and today, Dyson has almost 1000 patents and patent applications for 150 different inventions.
To put these ideas into practice, the first stage is constructing a prototype, and for this, Dyson needs a supplier of reliable parts.
RS has been a key supplier, providing parts to Research, Design & Development departments since the beginning. The RS parts support Dyson’s R&D activities on several levels – from supplying the building blocks of new technologies, to providing technical support and maximising the performance of sub-components.
With a team of over 420 engineers, scientists and industrial designers, Dyson are innovating continually to develop new technology for the home - and RS will continue to provide top quality parts and service to help Dyson achieve their mission.

THE FIRST STEP − MEASURE IT!Collect and analyse data, measure energy consumed, use an installed portable power meter. This will identify which loads need to be investigated further.A FEW SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE ENERGYSwitch It OffThe first rule of energy saving is “if it isn’t being used, switch it off”. Consider installing an automated switch off system, and train staff.Check Motor SizingAlmost all driven equipment installations are oversized as a result of over generous safety margins. A simple test to check motor efficiency is to feel the temperature; if you can keep your hand on a running motor then it is most likely running below capacity and at low efficiency. Make more detailed measurements and consider swapping the motor for a smaller frame size.Permanently Connect Motors in StarQuite often motors are oversized and produce far more torque than is required. You can sometimes reduce the effective motor torque and hence power drawn by it, by connecting the motor windings in star. The saving can be almost 60% in energy consumption.Replace Motors Instead of Rewinding ThemRewinding can reduce efficiency, even if the cost of repair is less, a new high efficiency motor will save you more on your electricity billPulley SizesSimply changing pulley size, to ensure a fan or pump runs at a more appropriate duty point can often make significant energy savings.
Regular MaintenanceMaintain and clean your motors drives, belts, couplings and moving parts to ensure they are running at optimum efficiency. Check filters, inlet ports, fan blades, bearings regularly.InsulateStop heat being wasted, keep it all in! Use draft excluding strip, insulating board and pipe insulation. Replace damaged seals as the leak heat.HVAC and Lighting
Use compact fluorescent lamps instead of halogen or filament lamps, and consider LED lighting. Use occupancy detectors in offices, corridors and toilets to turn lighting off automatically when not required.Motor Controllers for Fans and PumpsRunning a fan or pump 20% slower using a variable speed drive (instead of using dampers, vanes or valves) will give you a 50% saving in electricity use!Keep your Airlines CleanClogging pneumatic airlines reduces flow rates and makes the compressor run for unnecessarily long periods. Use filters to keep the lines clean, and select energy efficient filters which have reduced effects on flow rates.
CLIMATE CHANGE LEVY (CCL)UK users, including the public sector as well as industrial and commercial sectors pay the Climate Change Levy via their energy bills, which is an extra 10% to 15% tax on top of the energy bill. Added to this, the price of electricity and gas is set to rise, so energy savings should make sense to everyone!
There is increasing evidence that human interaction is causing climate change right around the globe, mainly as a result of “greenhouse gas” emissions from burning fossil fuels. The key to managing this change is to reduce theenergy we use.

MAINTENANCE TASKSFactory shutdown is the ideal time for not just maintenance checks but to replace or update key components. Waiting for components to fail before replacement can be a false economy, as the time and trouble the failure causes, such as downtime, can be significant. Replacing components that have high switching cycles such as pushbuttons, emergency stops and sensors, especially those operating in dirty environments can reduce the number of plant failures and improve productivity. Below are a few examples of the types of components to consider.
RED Emergencypush in the event of a hazardous condition or emergency
Emergency stop, STOP/OFF Initiation of emergency function
YELLOW Abnormalpush in the event of an abnormal condition
intervention to suppress abnormal condition, or to restart an interrupted automatic cycle
GREEN Normal push to initiate/start START/ON

DSEAR COMES INTO FULL FORCEMost of the focus on maintaining standards in flammable areas has been on the ATEX product directive (94/9/EC), a trading directive ensuring European manufacturers had a level platform for the standards of product used in these areas. However there is a second directive, known as ATEX 137, which sets out to improve the health & safety protection of all workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.
WHAT IS DSEAR?The end user directive ATEX 137 is enforced in the UK by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), which legislates on how factories with explosive atmospheres should be classified and operated, and is controlled by the Health & Safety Executive. This act reached the statute book in 2002 and complements the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
The key date in the adoption of the user directive and compliance of DSEAR was June 2003. Article 9 of the directive states “where the workplaces which contain places where explosive atmospheres may occur are already in use before the 30th June 2003 they shall comply with the minimum requirements set out in the directive no later than 3 years after that date” What this means is that all existing hazardous area work places in use before 30th June 2003 must comply with the appropriate minimum requirements of ATEX 137 no later than 30th June 2006 and that the employer must take the necessary steps to ensure all modifications to hazardous area workplaces after 30 June 2003 comply with the appropriate minimum requirements of ATEX 137.
This could mean that you may need to install or replace existing equipment so that it complies with the ATEX requirements by the start of July 2006. Time is running out and RS can help.
To help you comply with DSEAR RS has a wide range of over 600 products that have been ATEX approved. To see the full range visit rswww.com/automationor the catalogue index at the back of each book and look up ‘Hazardous Area’.

STANDARD HIGHWAYCONES18”, 6-sided sand weighted base for stability.
Graham Fox of Spelsberg UK looks at the areas of an enclosure that can make the difference.
The IP rating of an enclosure is dictated not only by the enclosure itself, but also by its fixing method, lid sealing and cable entries. After the ‘IP’ (Ingress Protection) part of an enclosures protection rating, the first number equates to the protection offered by the box as regards solid objects from screwdrivers and fingers through to fine particulate dust. Most plastic and metal enclosures offer a 4, 5 or 6 rating (objects under 1mm diameter), a 4 is suitable for a basic wiring junction protected by a wall, ceiling, cabinet or similar in a dry environment, but a 5 or 6 is the preferred option should the enclosure be exposed in any way and this covers most industrial applications where the box can be seen or is accessible as part of routine operation or maintenance.
Pressed metal enclosures offer the poorest protection and are generally a 4, cast (usually aluminium) and most polystyrene and virtually all polycarbonate enclosures fall into the 5 or 6 categories. There is a third number that refers
to impact protection, but is not often quoted; the second number is where a decision has to be made and where several clear variables come in to play:
When mounting an enclosure inside a cabinet, fixing to a machine wall, a building wall or a post, the method of attachment can either maintain or instantly downgrade the IP rating of the enclosure assembly. For example, in an industrial environment that may include water sprays, wash downs or atmospheric moisture, a screw fixed ‘IP65’ enclosure with ‘IP68’ cable glands can be rendered ‘IP64’ or lower simply by not employing grommets between the screw or bolt heads and the enclosure wall when fixing the enclosure in place.
Fixing to posts or uneven surfaces is more problematic and an external fixing of some sort such as cable-tie brackets can be very useful. Gluing or gun applied sealant is also an option.
The lid sealing of an enclosure is the next major element to affect the sealing, basic ‘click’ fit lids are generally IP54 or lower. Pressed metal enclosures are the worst,
allowing either dust or moisture in reasonably easily, whereas plastic ‘click’ fit enclosures generally offer IP54, which provides limited protection from both dust ingress and liquids. Cast metal enclosures or industrial plastics such as moulded polystyrene and tougher polycarbonate generally offer much higher levels of protection. Lid fitment of IP54 and above generally requires an additional compressible seal to achieve higher protection. Machine applied polymer seals are generally more reliable than gasket types as they are not prone to movement during fixing and a seal that runs inside the lid fixing screws is normally required for IP65 and above.
Cable entries are present in virtually all sealed enclosures offering a significant IP rating; they vary from basic cable clamps through to independently rated waterproof cable glands. Basic cable clamps and open holes offer some protection, but where moisture is present to any degree the cable entry must offer a complete seal around the cable sheath. Recent developments in push-fit seals have seen both the grommet type and the moulded-in version offering high ratings up to IP65 in some instances, providing protection from drips to low power water sprays and suitable for general above ground outdoor applications.
Underground use, temporary immersion, wash downs in the food and processing industries or exposure to the sea requires IP65 and above, this generally requires cable glands fixed to the enclosure wall and high quality compression seals. An IP65 rated box is not IP65 when the cable entries do not offer the same protection.
The harmful effects of both dust and moisture to sensitive equipment, circuitry and switchgear can cause electrical shorting, component corrosion and greatly reduced reliability hence proper sealing is crucial. Other considerations such as ambient atmospheric moisture combined with large temperature fluctuations can also cause condensation problems, in situations where this situation is likely, it always pays to fit breather valves (or grommets) to allow the enclosure humidity and pressure to equalise without compromising the intended IP rating.
Advice on specifying enclosure ratings, what is appropriate for any given application and how to avoid compromising the intended IP rating should be provided by all dedicated enclosure suppliers and specialists, in addition to carrying a range of enclosure types and accessories to provide the ideal solution no matter what the challenge.

Protecting circuitry, electrical connections, wiring for displays, manual switch gear, sensors and breakers are the basic functions of an electrical enclosure, but is enough consideration given to the protection rating of that enclosure? The difference between an electrical enclosure offering IP54 and IP65 protection can make the difference between a well specified junction box that meets cost pressure and protection requirements and a failed installation due to moisture ingress, condensation or dust build up in a relatively normal working environment.

On March 26, 2006, Scotland introduced new anti-smoking laws to combat
smoking in public places and with both England & Wales planning to follow suit
in the near future we find out what the main reasons are for amending the law.
The law was designed to protect the general public from the harmful effects of
passive smoking. The non-smoker breathes ‘sidestream’ smoke from the burning
tip of the cigarette and ‘mainstream’ smoke that has been inhaled and then
exhaled by the smoker. Second-hand smoke (SHS) is a major source of indoor
air pollution.
WHAT DOES THE LAW DO?The new law bans smoking in “no-smoking premises”, by:
creating an offence of permitting others to smoke in no-smoking premises;
creating an offence of smoking in no-smoking premises;
creating an offence of failing to display warning notices in no-smoking premises;
setting out the powers of enforcement officers to enter no-smoking premises; and
creating an offence of failing without reasonable cause to give one’s name and address on
request by an enforcement officer.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ‘NO-SMOKING PREMISES’?They include premises like restaurants, bars, shops, cinemas, offices, hospitals, work vehicles
and sports centres. Those premises will then be no-smoking premises if they are wholly or
substantially enclosed. What that list of no-smoking premises has in common is that they all
fall into one of the following four broad categories of premises, namely those:
to which the public or a section of the public has access
which are being used wholly or mainly as a place of work by persons who are employees;
which are being used by and for the purposes of a club or other unincorporated
association; or
which are being used wholly or mainly for the provision of education,
health or care services.
ARE THERE ANY EXEMPTIONS TO THE LAW?Only a few exemptions to the law have been made, mainly on humanitarian grounds. The
exemptions are residential accommodation, designated rooms in adult care homes, adult
hospices, designated rooms in psychiatric hospitals and units, designated hotel bedrooms,
designated detention or interview rooms, designated rooms in offender accommodation
premises, offshore installations, private vehicles, certain laboratory rooms, submarines and
refuelling vessels. Nothing in the new law, however, obliges an employer or manager of
exempted premises to permit smoking or to provide a smoking area.
WILL THE BAN AFFECT MY BUSINESS PREMISES?Most business premises will be affected. If they are one of the kinds of premises listed
and are wholly or substantially enclosed then they will be no-smoking premises.

Providing the mechanical power for a small machine means looking at both the motor and the way the motors output is applied.
The choice of power transmission is wide and depends on the process itself; chains and belts allow transmission where the motor cannot be placed in direct contact and timing belts can be used to maintain tight control to ensure alignment within elements of a process. Alternatively couplings provide a solution for the connection where there is direct alignment of motor and drive shaft, a wide range of coupling types available, which afford differing levels of mis-alignment and effectiveness of power transmissions. With a wide range of motors and power transmission components a solution for most applications is available, visit rswww.com or see BOOK section 21 and BOOK section 5.

TYPE KThe type K, based on nickel/chromium aluminium, is the most widely used, with a wide
operating temperature range (up to 1100°C). However, they contain impurities which
give rise to problems:
• variability in the quality of nickel causes inconsistencies in sensing between
one thermocouple and the next
• between 200-600°C hysterisis occurs which means they read under when
the temperature is rising and over when the temperature is falling
• above 1000°C the arms oxidise
• the use of cobalt in this type K makes them unsuitable for use in the nuclear industry
TYPE NThis type overcomes the problems of the type K through optimisation of the nickel alloys
used to make them. They are resistant to oxidisation even at high temperatures (useable
up to 1300°C), can be used in the nuclear industry, have less hysterisis effects and there
is no issue in its useable temperature range.
TYPE JThe temperature range of the type J thermocouple makes it very popular in the plastics
industries e.g. injection and blow moulding.
TYPE TThese have the advantages of higher accuracy below 100°C and extended sensing
range at low temperatures. This makes them particularly useful for the food and drinks
industries, as well as other lower temperature applications.

ECONOMICALLY VIABLE VERSATILITYIN DYNAMIC APPLICATIONS
Transferring energy and pressurised liquids and gases from one point to another is a situation engineers and designers face every day. If one were to name a common aspect in designing machine tools, offshore rigs, irrigation systems, telescopes, automatic packaging systems, ship unloaders, lifts, and cranes, it would definitely be the necessity to energise movement.
Cable chains are a successful solution, to carrying power and services to moving parts. Variously referred to according to the application field (cable chain in machine tools, drag chain in offshore, power chain in cranes, etc.), chain-based systems are appreciated because they offer a wonderful unparalleled synergy of application versatility and economic viability. It is this synergy that is increasing their popularity amongst festoon, conductor bar and even reel users.
One crucial advantage to cable chain, is that the necessary length of both the chain and cables/hoses in a centre-fed chain system is slightly more than just half the distance to cover – compared with festoons which require the complete travel distance plus some extra looping length.
Technology in chain engineering is running fast in the endeavour to meet an ever-increasing demand for high-quality products. Today, chains can give out trouble-free performances at high speed and acceleration while carrying heavy added loads along hundreds of meters. Cables and hoses are safely sheltered inside the chain; their smooth and low-stress movement is guaranteed also under the most aggressive environmental work conditions.
Chains prove their advantages also in the different ways they can be customised to meet specific requirements. Clip-on links make for chains that can be opened quickly from the inner and/or outer radius side (which in turn contributes to sensibly reducing harnessing costs). Covers can be applied to protect cables and hoses, and prevent dirt and bulk material from spoiling the chain and its
contents. Cables and hoses can easily be accommodated inside the chain in multi-storey layouts or slid through ad-hoc machined crosspieces. Chains are supplied with a number of accessories to strengthen their performance: guide channels and other containment frames, support rollers, trolleys, etc.
It is of no less importance that chains are also environment-friendly. They normally comply with the EC’s RoHS Directives, meaning that no hazardous substances – among which cadmium, lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium – are used in chain manufacture.
Designers and engineers enjoy a further advantage when they opt for chains. Choosing the right chain for their own application is normally very easy, the selection lying on not more than three basic criteria:
1. travel distance, i.e. the space where the chain moves. Most applications require a one-axis (either back-and-forth or rotational) movement: calculating travel distance is normally easy. In some cases a two-axes or even three-axes movement is needed: consultancy from a technical department would then be a good idea.
2. cross section and bending radius is identified by the cables and hoses meant to go inside the chain. It is important to verify that the cables and hoses intended for in-chain use are actually designed for such purpose.
3. self-supporting capacity, whose verification becomes essential in short-stroke applications, such as machine tools. Check whether or not the desired chain is able to withstand its own weight plus the added weight of cables and hoses over a certain unsupported length
The choice of the right chain can be influenced also by other aspects, such as: type of travel (horizontal, vertical, rotational, mixed); chain layout (single chain, nest, ring, side-by-side, lateral, multi-band, etc., or a combination of layouts); work environment (port application, steel-making plant, wood-processing plant, offshore rig, etc.).
