1 Richard  Aber  Think  About  It    Acrylic  on  Paper  

 Aber  received  his  B.A.  and  M.A.  in  sculpture  at  California  State  University,  Fullerton.  He  has  enjoyed  a  distinguished  exhibition  history  across  the  nation.  Aber’s  works  are  held  in  prestigious  collections  including:  Newport  Harbor  Art  Museum;  California  State  University,  Fullerton;  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art;  and  the  Oakland  Museum  of  Art.  

 2 Robin  Adsit  

Figure  Acting  as  a  Wall  Oil  on  Paper  

 Adsit  received  her  B.F.A  at  the  San  Francisco  Art  Institute;  her  M.A.  at  San  Francisco  State  University;  and  her  M.F.A.  at  the  Ohio  State  University  in  Columbus,  OH.  She  has  taught  art  at  the  college  level  at  many  institutions  including  Los  Angeles  City  College;  California  State  University,  San  Bernardino;  and  the  University  of  Redlands.  Adsit  has  exhibited  widely  and  won  numerous  awards  and  grants.        

3 Josh  “Shag”  Agle  Skull  Mug  Acrylic  

 Josh  Agle  –  known  as  Shag  –  is  a  painter,  designer,  and  illustrator.  He  has  a  distinctive  style  that  employs  visual  elements  from  the  last  five  decades  of  commercial  illustration,  but  conceptually,  his  artwork  is  fueled  by  contemporary  attitudes  and  ideas.  Shag  has  exhibited  his  work  around  the  U.S.,  Europe,  Japan,  Australia,  and  South  America.  He  opened  The  Shag  Store  in  2009  in  Palm  Springs,  CA,  which  exclusively  sells  his  art,  prints,  and  merchandise.  Shag  resides  in  Southern  California  with  his  family.  

 4 Dean  Alari    

Camden,  TN  Kodak  Portra  Inkjet  Print  

 A  native  Californian,  Dean  Alari  received  his  B.A.  in  Studio  Art  from  Westmont  College  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.  He  currently  is  pursuing  several  digital  photography  art  projects.  Alari  lives  and  works  in  Memphis,  TN.  

 5 Lita  Albuquerque

 Albuquerque  was  born  in  Santa  Monica,  CA  and  raised  in  Tunisia,  North  Africa  and  Paris,  France.  In  the  1970s,  Albuquerque  emerged  on  the  California  art  scene  as  part  of  the

Light  and  Space  movement.  She  gained  prominence  in  the  late  1970s  with  her  ephemeral  pigment  pieces.  She  has  since  become  an  internationally  renowned  installation  artist,  environmental  artist,  painter,  and  sculptor.  She  has  developed  a  visual  language  that  brings  the  realities  of  time  and  space  to  a  human  scale  and  is  acclaimed  for  her  ephemeral  and  permanent  art  works  executed  in  the  landscape  and  public  sites.  She  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Monica.  

 6 Scott  Anderson  

Olmec  Mask  Oil  on  Paper  

 Anderson  has  worked  as  an  art  professor  at  Westmont  College  since  2006.  He  specializes  in  illustration,  painting,  and  graphic  design.  Anderson  earned  his  M.F.A.  in  Illustration  from  the  Hartford  Art  School  at  the  University  of  Hartford.  He  exhibits  frequently  with  the  Society  of  Illustrators  in  New  York  and  Los  Angeles.  Anderson  won  first  place  in  the  2011  Old  Spanish  Days  Fiesta  Art  Juried  Competition.  Currently,  he  lives  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.  

 7 Terry  Anderson  

Insomnia    Acrylic  on  Paper    

 Anderson  was  born  in  Toledo,  OH,  and  moved  to  San  Diego,  CA  in  the  1980s.  In  2000,  she  rekindled  her  lifetime  interest  in  art,  and  began  experimenting  with  different  mediums.  She  now  works  in  acrylic,  oil,  watercolor,  oil  pastel,  scratchboard,  and  digital  art.  Anderson  often  creates  representational  art,  but  also  enjoys  working  in  an  abstract  manner.  

 8 Mari  Andrews  

Smalleaf  Wire  

 Andrews  received  her  B.F.A.  at  the  University  of  Dayton,  Ohio  and  then  went  on  to  earn  her  M.F.A.  at  the  Otis  Art  Institute  of  Design  in  Los  Angeles.  Andrews  works  with  a  variety  of  materials  often  combining  them  with  drawing  or  in  installations.  She  has  exhibited  around  the  U.S.  such  as  at  the  San  Francisco  Museum  of  Modern  Art  and  the  Museum  of  Contemporary  Art  in  Los  Angeles,  as  well  as  internationally  in  Japan  and  Israel.  In  1989,  she  received  the  National  Endowment  for  the  Arts  Fellowship  award.  She  lives  and  works  in  the  Bay  Area  of  California.

Arms  studied  at  the  San  Francisco  Art  Institute,  and  his  lively  paintings  channel  the  intense  energy  of  Abstract  Expressionism  and  the  Action  Painting  movement.  Arms’  technique  involves  applying  thick  layers  of  oil  paint,  sanding  them  down,  and  reapplying  more  layers  of  paint    –  often  working  on  one  painting  for  months.  Arms  has  described  his  artistic  process  as  a  meditative  way  for  him  to  distill  the  large  amounts  of  information  that  he  is  inundated  with  everyday.  Arms  currently  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles,  and  is  represented  by  the  Ameringer,  McEnery,  and  Yohe  Gallery  in  New  York  City,  NY.  

 10 Tony  Askew  

Take  5    Collage    

 Noted  as  a  printmaker,  Askew  also  works  as  an  assemblage  and  collage  artist.  He  earned  his  M.F.A.  at  California  State  University,  Los  Angeles.  Askew  has  melded  his  passion  for  creating  art  and  educating  first  as  Chairman  at  Santa  Barbara  High  School  Department  of  Art,  and  then  as  an  art  professor  at  Westmont  College  where  he  was  also  Director  of  the  Reynolds  Gallery  (now  the  Westmont  Ridley-­‐Tree  Museum  of  Art).  Askew  is  a  highly  regarded  artist  and  beloved  teacher  in  Santa  Barbara  and  Santa  Fe.

On  the  Riviera    Mixed  Media  

 Baas  is  active  in  the  Santa  Barbara  arts  scene  both  as  a  creator  and  an  arts  advocate.  She  has  served  on  the  advisory  board  of  Speaking  of  Stories  and  is  a  dedicated  supporter  of  the  Santa  Barbara  Symphony  and  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art.    

 18 Don  Bachardy  

Three  for  the  Show  (Lavender  and  Two  Greens)  Acrylic  on  Paper  

 Bachardy  is  a  portrait  artist  in  California.  He  studied  at  the  California  Institute  of  the  Arts  in  Los  Angeles,  as  well  as  the  Slade  School  of  Art  in  London.  He  has  had  many  one-­‐man  exhibitions  around  the  U.S.  Bachardyʼs  work  is  housed  in  the  permanent  collections  of  the  Metropolitan  Museum  of  Art,  the  Smithsonian  Institute,  and  the  National  Portrait  Gallery  in  London,  among  many  others.  Currently,  Bachardy  lives  in  Santa  Monica,  CA.  

 19 Béla  Bácsi  

Liza  Plaster  

 Bácsi  is  a  professional  sculptor  who  works  primarily  in  marble  and  bronze.  He  is  a  member  of  the  National  Sculpture  Society,  New  York  (est.  1893),  and  won  the  organization’s  Gold  Medal  award  in  1999.  Bácsi  is  also  an  active  member  of  the  California  Art  Club  (est.  1906),  which  is  one  of  the  oldest  professional  arts  societies  in  the  U.S.  He  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.  

 20 Nancy  Barch  

Bike  Instruction    Mixed  Media    

 Hailing  from  Pennsylvania,  Barch  is  known  for  her  collages,  mixed  media  pieces,  and  watercolors.  She  is  a  signature  member  of  the  American  Watercolor  Society  and  the  Philadelphia  Water  Color  Society,  and  her  work  has  been  exhibited  widely  on  the  East  Coast.  She  has  received  numerous  awards  and  grants,  and  continues  to  exhibit  her  work.  Barch  resides  in  Clifton,  PA.    

 21 Rayne  Beaudoin

 An  active  Illustrator,  Beaudoin  is  native  to  Pasadena,  California  where  he  attended  the  Art  Center  College  of  Design.  After  moving  from  place  to  place,  Beaudoin  relocated  to  Seattle  where  he  currently  resides  and  continues  to  produces  illustrations    –  often  collaborating

with  other  artists  on  commissions  and  various  projects.  His  work  has  been  features  in  Communication  Arts’  Illustration  Annual,  and  he  is  a  recipient  of  New  York  Festival’s  World  Medal  Award.  

 22 Ann  Bedingham  

Infinity    Watercolor  

 A  native  of  Northern  Michigan,  Bedingham  first  worked  in  theatre  and  restaurant  management,  but  was  always  interested  in  art.  In  1989,  she  moved  to  Tucson,  AZ  where  the  openness  of  the  desert  landscapes  inspired  her  paintings  and  photography.  Currently  Bedingham  lives  and  works  in  Oracle,  AZ.  She  studied  art  with  teachers  Howard  Weingarden  and  Paul  Mohr.    

 23 Bonnie  Beedles  

Amygdala  Old  Glass  

 Beedles  creates  her  artwork  using  variety  of  materials  and  media.  She  explores  the  themes  of  home  –  especially  her  relationship  to  history,  place,  and  devotion.  Beedles  received  her  B.A.  in  English  at  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles;  and  her  M.A.  in  English  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.  Beedles  blends  the  realm  of  writing  and  art  together  to  create  stimulating  and  articulate  work.  She  has  exhibited  her  work  in  Santa  Barbara  including  a  solo  exhibition  at  the  Santa  Barbara  Contemporary  Arts  Forum.  

 24 Ally  Benbrook  

Peeping  Tom    Watercolor    Benbrook  enjoyed  a  successful  career  as  a  fabric  designer  and  dyer.    She  took  up  watercolor  in  her  50s,  and  fell  in  love  with  the  medium.  Her  subject  matter  ranges  from  animals,  to  nature,  to  genre  narratives.  She  is  active  in  the  San  Diego  Watercolor  Society  Gallery,  and  she  regularly  exhibits  at  the  Spanish  Village  Art  Center  and  Artwalk  San  Diego.  Benbrook  has  studios  in  El  Cajon  and  in  Ocean  Beach,  CA.  

 25 Jim  Bess  

Young  Dreamer    Ink  &  Photocopy  

 Bess  believes  that  art  is  a  “dialogue”  between  the  artist  and  his  or  her  artistic  materials.  He  works  in  monotype,  assemblage,  drawing,  and  painting.  According  to  Bess  his  art,  “…  has  roots  in  Expressionism  [portraying]  what  he  feels  and  thinks  at  that  moment.”  He  also  enjoys  exploring  the  human  figure  in  his  art.  Bess  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara,  California.

 26 Jack  Bianchi  

A  Peaceful  Breath  Acrylic  on  Paper  

 Jack  Bianchi  is  well  known  in  Santa  Barbara  as  a  triathlon  coach,  an  avid  runner,  and  a  noted  philanthropist  for  cancer  research.  Additionally,  Bianchi  has  artistic  talent,  too!  

 27 Lillian  Bleuze-­‐Nelson  

Sailing  at  Sunset    Watercolor  Collage    

 Living  and  working  in  Ventura  County,  CA,  Lillian  Bleuze-­‐Nelson  brings  an  intuitive  passion  for  rhythm  and  movement,  which  she  combines  with  her  unique  expressions  of  form  and  color.  She  is  a  self-­‐taught  artist,  but  influenced  by  the  artist  and  teacher  Katherine  Chang  Lui.  She  works  in  watercolor  and  mixed  media.    

 28 Kit  Boise-­‐Cossart

 Boise-­‐Cossart  received  her  B.F.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  in  1972.  Her  preferred  media  are  oil  pastels,  painting,  sculpture,  and  photography.  Her  landscape  scenes  of  the  California  Coast  and  surrounding  areas  have  been  exhibited  widely  in  galleries  and  museums  in  Southern  California  and  the  Central  Coast.  She  lives  and  works  in  Gaviota,  CA.  

 29 Alicia  Bonnette  

Metal  Surf  Photograph  

 Bonnette  is  a  Central  Coast  artist  from  Gaviota,  active  in  arts  organizations  from  Lompoc  to  Santa  Barbara  to  Santa  Ynez.    She  is  a  versatile  artist,  making  drawings  as  well  as  digital  photographs.  

 30 Jeremy  Botts  

Mary's  Song  Blind  Letterpress  

 Botts  attended  the  Rhode  Island  School  of  Design  earning  his  B.F.A.,  and  then  pursued  his  M.F.A.  at  the  Maryland  Institute  College  of  Art.  He  has  taught  art  at  Messiah  College  in  Pennsylvania;  the  Maryland  Institute  College  of  Art  in  Baltimore,  and  Wheaton  College  in  Illinois.  Botts  also  puts  his  graphic  design  skills  to  work  managing  Flammascura  Press.

31 Sandra  Bowden  Written  Collagraph  Mixed  Media,  Gold  

 A  native  of  New  England,  Sandra  Bowden  studied  at  Massachusetts  College  of  Art  and  State  University  of  New  York  at  Albany  among  other  institutions.  Labeled  by  herself  and  others  as  a  Christian  artist,  Bowden  practices  printmaking  and  painting.  She  also  served  as  the  president  of  Christians  in  the  Visual  Arts  from  1993-­‐2007.  Bowden  resides  and  works  in  Chatham,  MA.    

 32 T.  C.  Boyle  

Very  Sad  Fish  Colored  Pencil  

 Tom  Coraghessan  Boyle  is  an  American  writer  and  artist.  He  has  received  degrees  from  SUNY  Potsdam  (B.A.)  and  University  of  Iowa  (M.F.A.,  Ph.D.)  in  history,  literature,  and  writing.  He  has  been  a  Distinguished  Professor  of  English  at  the  University  of  Southern  California  since  1978.  In  addition  to  his  writing  efforts,  Boyle  has  also  created  illustrations  and  cartoons  for  publications  such  as  The  New  Yorker  and  The  New  York  Times  Book  Review.  He  currently  resides  in  Santa  Barbara  with  his  wife  and  three  children.  

 33 Linda  Branch  

Blue  Rider  Remembered    Acrylic    A  Westmont  College  graduate  with  a  degree  in  studio  art,  Branch  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.  She  is  best  known  as  a  painter  in  acrylics.    

 34 Anneliese  Bratko

 Bratko  is  a  recent  graduate  of  Westmont  College’s  studio  art  department.  She  is  accomplished  in  painting  and  drawing.  Bratko  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.

 Bright  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara  where  he  is  best  known  for  his  work  in  photography.

Isla  Vista    Acrylic  on  Paper  

 Brillo  is  a  local  Santa  Barbara  artist.  She  is  best  known  for  her  acrylic  works.  In  this  piece,  Brillo  reflects  on  the  area  of  Isla  Vista  –  a  well-­‐known  town  near  Santa  Barbara.    

 37 David  Broad  

The  Good  Life  Ink  and  Watercolor  

 Broad  lives  and  works  in  San  Rafael,  CA.  He  is  a  well-­‐established  watercolorist  working  in  an  impressionistic  style,  often  depicting  light-­‐drenched  landscapes.  He  studied  art  at  the  Maryland  Institute  of  Art  and  the  Pratt  Institute  in  Brooklyn,  NY.  Broad  then  worked  as  an  Illustrator/Designer  retiring.  Since  then  he  has  rekindled  his  fine  art  career,  earning  recognition  for  his  watercolors.        

 38 Karen  L.  Brown  

My  Pleasure  3    Relief  Monoprint,  Chine  Colle,  Collage    

 Brown  began  her  arts  education  as  an  adolescent,  but  did  not  seriously  pursue  art  again  till  much  later  as  an  adult.  Brown  primarily  works  in  painting,  printmaking,  and  encaustics,  but  she  also  combines  digital  images  with  more  traditional  techniques  in  her  mixed  media  approach.  Brown  is  dedicated  to  arts  education,  and  is  active  in  local  art  groups  near  her  home  in  Ventura,  CA.  

 39 Phoebe  Brunner  

Sea  Storm    Oil  on  Paper  

 Born  in  New  York,  Brunner  went  to  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  for  her  B.F.A.  Brunner  has  exhibited  her  work  at  numerous  galleries  and  museums  around  the  nation,  including  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art  and  the  Carnegie  Museum  of  Art.  Her  contemporary  landscapes  provide  viewers  with  stunning  perspectives  and  majestic  light.  Brunner’s  work  is  housed  in  prominent  collections  such  as  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art  and  the  Glenbow  Museum  of  Art,  Alberta  Canada.  Currently  she  lives  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.  

 40 Charlotte  Bryant

 Growing  up,  Bryant  split  her  time  between  Santa  Barbara,  CA  and  Albuquerque,  NM.  She  is  a  recent  graduate  of  Westmont  College  with  degrees  in  studio  art  and  business.  Bryant

is  primarily  a  painter,  but  she  also  enjoys  sewing  and  artistic  craft  making.  Her  most  recent  series  of  work  explores  the  notion  of  obstructions  and  the  filters  that  hinder  or  enhance  one’s  perspective.    

 41 John  Buck  

Stumpage  (2014)  Graphite  and  Ink  on  Paper  

 Born  in  Ames,  Iowa,  Buck  currently  lives  and  works  in  Bozeman,  MT.  He  received  a  B.F.A.  at  the  Kansas  City  Art  Institute  and  School  of  Design  in  Kansas  City,  MO,  and  an  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Davis.  He  has  taught  art  at  Gloucestershire  College  of  Art  and  Design,  in  Cheltenham,  England;  Humboldt  State  University,  in  Arcata,  CA.;  Mira  Costa  College,  in  Carlsbad,  CA.;  and  Montana  State  University,  in  Bozeman,  MT.  Buck  is  known  primarily  as  a  sculptor  in  wood  and  a  woodcut  printmaker.    

 42 John  Budicin  

Mt.  Tom  (Bishop,  CA)      Oil  on  Paper  

 Budicin  was  born  in  Rovigno,  D'Istria,  Italy  and  moved  to  Southern  California  with  his  family  at  the  age  of  eleven.  Budicin  has  worked  as  an  art  director,  advertising  manager,  and  freelance  illustrator,  but  he  is  most  content  as  a  plein  air  artist.  In  addition  to  painting  outside  everyday  near  his  home  in  San  Bernardino,  CA,  Budicin  hosts  painting  workshops  around  the  U.S.  and  in  his  home  country  of  Italy.  

 43 Gary  Buhler  

Stream  Texture    Watercolor    

 Gary  Buhler  is  a  native  of  Adak,  AK.  Growing  up  in  the  Pacific  Northwest,  Buhler  demonstrated  a  talent  for  drawing  at  an  early  age  and  eventually  went  on  to  study  art  at  Judson  Baptist  College  and  art  education  at  Western  Oregon  University.  He  completed  his  studies  with  an  M.F.A.  degree  from  the  University  of  Arizona.  The  landscapes  of  Oregon  as  well  as  the  scenery  of  his  adopted  state  of  Arizona  have  inspired  much  of  his  work.  He  lives  and  works  in  Newberg,  OR  where  he  teaches  art  at  George  Fox  University.  

 44 Rafael  Perea  de  la  Cabada

 Perea  was  born  in  Mexico  City  and  went  to  the  National  School  of  Painting,  Sculpture,  and  Printmaking  of  Mexico  City.  In  1987,  he  moved  to  the  United  States  to  earn  his  M.F.A.  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.  Besides  many  group  and  solo  exhibitions,  Cabada’s  drawings,  paintings,  prints,  and  mixed-­‐media  works  are  housed  in  the  Museum

 Calame  was  born  in  the  Bronx,  NY  and  received  her  B.F.A.  from  the  State  University  of  New  York  at  Purchase,  and  her  M.F.A.  in  Art  and  Film  from  the  California  Institute  of  the  Arts  in  Valencia,  CA.  Calame  is  drawn  to  overlooked  and  forgotten  markings  in  her  surroundings:  “…stains  on  a  sidewalk,  graffiti  on  a  river  bank,  tire  skid  marks  on  a  roadway.”  She  traces  these  seemingly  insignificant  marks  and  transforms  them  into  large,  colorful  abstractions  that  inspire  viewers  to  ponder  the,  “…forgotten,  disregarded  or  unobserved.”  Calame  currently  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles,  CA.

Evening  Questions  Graphite  on  Paper    Catling  earned  his  B.A.  and  M.A.  at  San  Francisco  State  University  with  concentrations  in  painting  and  sculpture.  Later  he  went  to  California  State  Univeisty,  Fullerton  to  earn  his  M.F.A.  in  sculpture.  Catlingʼs  sculptures  are  intended  to  “emit  an  archaic  sensibility,  a  strong  connection  of  the  past  to  the  present.”  He  hopes  his  work  challenges  viewers  to  reexamine  spirituality.  Currently,  he  serves  as  the  Art  Department  Chair  and  the  Director  of  the  M.F.A.  program  at  Azusa  Pacific  University  in  California.  

 52 Leslie  Cheney-­‐Parr  

New  Watercolor  and  Ink  

 Parr  received  her  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Berkeley,  and  has  made  the  Pacific  Northwest  her  home.  In  addition  to  creating  her  own  art,  she  has  also  taught  art  to  adults  and  college  students  for  over  two  decades.  Cheney-­‐Parr’s  works  can  be  found  in  corporate  and  private  collections  throughout  the  U.S.  and  Europe.  She  continues  to  paint  and  exhibit  her  watercolors,  etchings  and  drawings,  and  is  a  signature  member  of  the  California  Watercolor  Association  and  of  Print  Arts  North  West.  Cheney-­‐Parr  currently  owns  and  operates  an  art  studio  in  Sandy,  OR.

 Childs  is  a  photographer  who  lives  and  works  in  Pasadena,  CA.  He  teaches  undergraduate  studies  at  Biola  University  and  Azusa  Pacific  University,  where  he  also  teaches  in  the  M.F.A.  program.  Childs  has  exhibited  his  work  widely  throughout  the  Greater  Los  Angeles  area.  His  Polaroid  photograph  of  the  5  square-­‐inch  piece  of  Rives  BFK  –  the  paper  the  Ridley-­‐Tree  Museum  of  Art  provided  each  artist  with  for  this  exhibition  –  references  the  work  of  many  minimalist  and  conceptual  artists  of  the  1960s  and  70s  such  as  John  Baldessari,  Jo  Baer,  and  Piero  Manzoni.

 Cole  was  born  and  raised  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.  She  was  educated  at  San  Jose  State  University,  and  spent  time  in  various  places  in  the  U.S.  with  her  husband  before  returning  to  Santa  Barbara  to  raise  a  family.  Cole  built  a  career  as  a  technical  illustrator  and  graphic  artist  before  pursuing  printmaking  –  primarily  monotype.  Cole  has  been  actively  involved  in  the  local  arts  community:  including  many  years  of  service  on  the  Art  Council  for  the  Westmont  Ridley-­‐Tree  Museum  of  Art,  and  as  a  member  of  the  Santa  Barbara  Art  Association.

 Connally  received  a  B.F.A.  from  Wichita  State  University  and  an  M.F.A.  at  Southern  Methodist  University.  Her  paintings  are  influenced  by  Alice  Neel,  Joan  Mitchell,  and  her  admiration  for  French  Impressionism.    Connally  lived  and  worked  for  many  years  in  Texas,  but  has  recently  moved  to  Santa  Barbara,  where  she  enjoys  painting  the  weather  conditions  and  atmospheric  effects  of  the  California  landscape.  Connally  is  equally  comfortable  as  a  figural  or  landscape  painter,  and  often  works  on  large,  colorful  abstract  compositions.

 Craft  is  one  of  the  most  widely  respected  and  well-­‐known  fantasy  artists  and  illustrators  both  in  the  U.S.  and  internationally.  Craft  is  a  native  of  Japan,  and  received  her  B.F.A.  from  The  Kanazawa  Municipal  College  of  Fine  and  Industrial  Art.  After  graduating,  Craft  immigrated  to  the  U.S.  and  continued  her  studies  at  the  Art  Institute  of  Chicago.  Since  then,  she  has  enjoyed  a  successful  career  as  a  freelance  illustrator,  and  has  completed  commissions  for  Time  Magazine,  National  Geographic  Society,  and  The  New  York  Times.  Craft  has  also  illustrated  many  books  and  book  covers  for  authors  such  as  Stephen  King,  Carl  Sagan,  and  Orson  Scott  Card,  among  many  others.  She  now  resides  in  Norfolk,  CT.

 Cretara  teaches  art  at  California  State  University,  Long  Beach.  He  works  primarily  in  drawing  and  painting.  Cretara  earned  his  B.A.  and  M.A.  from  the  Boston  University  School  of  Fine  Arts.  He  was  awarded  a  Fulbright  Grant  to  Italy,  and  was  also  invited  to  be  an  artist  in  residence  at  the  Foundation  Camargo  in  Cassis,  France.  Cretara  has  had  a  retrospective  at  the  Las  Vegas  Art  Museum,  and  has  been  in  numerous  group  exhibitions  in  his  distinguished  career.  His  works  can  be  found  in  many  prestigious  collections  including  the  Metropolitan  Museum  of  Art  and  the  Art  Institute  of  Boston.

The  Promise  Acrylic  and  Collage  

 David  G.  Crouch  works  in  oil,  acrylic,  pen  and  ink,  and  mixed  media.  He  was  a  scientific  illustrator  and  professor  at  the  University  of  California’s  Scripps  Institution  of  Oceanography  in  La  Jolla,  and  the  Department  of  Geological  Sciences  at  University  of  California  Santa  Barbara.  He  currently  is  Professor  of  Cultural  Geography  at  the  University  of  Derby  in  the  UK.  Much  of  his  older  work  illustrates  ocean  creatures,  human  figures,  and  geological  forms  in  bright,  lively  colors.  His  recent  abstractions  are  more  ambiguous,  but  still  retain  Crouch’s  playful  energy.

 Charles  “Charlie”  Duke  grew  up  in  Charlotte,  North  Carolina  with  a  strong  desire  to  serve  his  country.  He  eventually  served  as  an  aviator  in  the  U.S.  Air  Force  (now  a  retired  brigadier  general),  and  later  he  became  an  astronaut  for  NASA  on  the  Apollo  16.  In  1972,  Duke  became  the  tenth  man  to  walk  on  the  moon.  Duke  now  travels  as  a  motivational  speaker.  He  lives  in  Texas  with  his  family.

 Ekstrom  earned  her  B.A.  in  Creative  Studies,  and  her  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.  She  is  deeply  influenced  and  intrigued  by  the  abstraction  of  words  and  the  way  in  which  we  communicate  with  one  another.  Ekstrom  is  interested  in  the  study  of  Christianity  and  Judaism,  and  she  is  known  for  using  art  as  a  means  to  interpret  the  Bible.  In  fact,  she  uses  Bibles  as  the  medium  for  her  artistic  sculptures.

Head  of  Aphrodite  From  the  M.F.A.  in  Boston    Graphite  

 Erikson  received  a  B.F.A.  in  drawing  from  Edinboro  University  in  Pennsylvania,  and  an  M.F.A.  in  painting  from  Indiana  University  in  Bloomington.  He  is  known  for  his  paintings  of  female  nudes  that  are  deep  in  thought  –  painted  in  soft  tones  surrounded  by  imaginary  landscapes.  He  first  renders  the  figure  models  from  life,  and  then  proceeds  to  fill  in  the  background  with  “invented  space  or  historical  places.”  He  currently  teaches  drawing,  painting,  and  illustration  at  Xavier  University  in  Cincinnati,  OH.

 Working  in  a  variety  of  media,  Esparza  is  a  painter,  printmaker  and  mixed  media  artist.  She  earned  her  B.F.A.  in  studio  art.  Esparza  enjoys  painting  scenery  from  the  Southwest  region  of  the  U.S.,  and  she  currently  lives  in  Arizona.  She  has  exhibited  her  work  in  the  Tucson  Museum  of  Art,  and  in  various  galleries  and  museums  in  the  Southwest.

 Farrington  studied  at  Colorado  Mesa  University  (B.F.A.),  and  recently  completed  her  M.F.A.  degree  at  Azusa  Pacific  University.  She  most  often  creates  large  acrylic  paintings  and  mixed-­‐media  works  on  paper  that  read  as  stream-­‐of-­‐consciousness  narratives.  These  pieces  explore  various  themes  such  as  homesickness  and  dislocation.  Besides  her  own  artistic  practice,  Farrington  has  also  served  as  a  studio  art  professor  at  her  alma  mater.  She  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles.

 Ferguson-­‐Sauder  is  the  creative  director  of  Return  Design  at  Gordon  College  in  Wenham,  MA,  which  consists  of  student  interns  who  offer  design  support  for  non-­‐profits  and  arts  related  organizations.  He  also  owns  and  runs  a  design  studio  that  specializes  in  branding  and  identity  development  that  serves  clients  ranging  from  large  multi-­‐national  corporations  –  including  Google,  Intel,  and  The  North  Face  –  to  small  grassroots  non-­‐profits.  Ferguson-­‐Sauder  is  also  an  adjunct  art  faculty  member  at  Gordon  College.  His  most  recent  work  for  the  Accessible  Icon  Project  is  now  housed  in  the  permanent  collection  of  the  Museum  of  Modern  Art,  New  York.

 Firestone  earned  his  B.A.  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Cruz,  and  his  M.A.  and  M.F.A.  at  the  University  of  California,  Berkeley.  Firestone  is  the  founder  and  owner  of  United  Elements,  a  company  that  specializes  in  product  design  and  furniture/lighting  design.  He  creates  sculpture  and  hybrid  paintings.  Firestone  has  been  awarded  many  grants  and  honors,  among  them  an  Artistsʼ  Fellowship  Inc.  grant  in  New  York  and  an  Endowment  to  the  Arts  Award  from  UC  Santa  Cruz.  He  lectures  at  many  colleges  including  San  Francisco  City  College  and  UC  Santa  Cruz.  Currently,  he  lives  in  Montara,  CA.

 Fishman  received  his  B.F.A.  at  the  University  of  Hartford  Art  School,  and  his  M.A.  in  Communication  with  a  concentration  in  Photojournalism  and  Mass  Communication  from  the  University  of  Southern  Mississippi  at  Hattiesburg.  Fishman  also  holds  a  Teaching  Certificate  in  Art.  Exhibiting  his  work  in  various  galleries  and  museums  around  the  country,  he  has  works  housed  in  public  and  private  collections  including  the  Mead  Museum  of  Art  at  Amherst  College  in  Massachusetts,  and  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art.  Fishman  has  also  delivered  many  artist  talks  and  lectures  at  colleges  and  universities.  Currently,  he  lives  and  creates  in  Ojai,  CA.

 Ford  is  a  well-­‐known  fiber  artist  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA,  who  creates  soft  sculptures  in  organic  shapes.  She  also  makes  graphite  drawings  that  at  first  glance  seem  like  strange  biomorphic  creatures,  but  on  second  glance  reveal  her  whimsical  sense  of  humor.  She  has  shown  at  the  Contemporary  Arts  Forum  in  Santa  Barbara  and  her  work  is  held  in  private  and  public  art  collections.

 Born  in  Manila,  Philippines,  Forte  came  to  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  to  earn  his  B.A.and  M.F.A.  He  is  a  member  of  Christians  in  the  Visual  Arts,  and  many  churches  have  commissioned  Forte  to  create  paintings  for  specific  spaces  and  sermons.  Forte  has  taught  at  Gordon  College,  Weham,  MA;  Biola  University,  La  Mirada,  CA;  and  at  Gordon  College’s  Orvieto  Campus  in  Italy.

her  attention.    She  is  a  respected  artist  with  an  active  following  in  Santa  Barbara.  Figural  works,  still-­‐life  scenes,  and  landscapes  are  all  part  of  her  diverse  oeuvre.    

 105 Llyn  Foulkes  

It's  Lonely  Up  Here    Ink  on  Paper    

 Foulkes  studied  at  Chouinard  Art  Institute  (now  CalArts),  and  first  exhibited  his  work  in  1959  at  the  legendary  Ferus  Gallery  in  Los  Angeles.  He  has  a  decidedly  eclectic  oeuvre,  both  thematically  and  in  terms  of  artistic  media.  His  work  –  including  photographs,  paintings,  drawings,  as  well  as  many  mixed-­‐media  pieces  –  have  been  associated  with  Pop  Art,  Dadaism,  and  Conceptual  art.  Foulkes  is  also  a  gifted  jazz  musician  and  continues  to  perform,  which  he  claims  to  enjoy  more  than  his  artistic  practice.  He  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles.    

 106 John  Frame  

Do  You  Know?    Watercolor,  Ink,  &  Colored  Pencil  on  Recycled  Paper  with  DVD  inside    

 Frame  studied  at  San  Diego  State  University  (B.A.)  and  at  Claremont  Graduate  University  (M.F.A.),  and  has  since  been  an  active  sculptor  in  Southern  California.  Frame’s  sculptures  are  figurative,  but  they  are  untraditional  in  the  sense  that  they  are  almost  always  assemblages  made  from  a  variety  of  found  objects.  He  is  the  recipient  of  many  prestigious  grants  and  artist’s  fellowships  including  two  from  the  National  Endowment  for  the  Arts  and  one  from  the  J.  Paul  Getty  Museum.  He  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Wrightwood,  CA.

 Born  and  raised  in  Laguna  Beach,  Francis  has  achieved  a  national  reputation  as  plein  air  California  landscape  painter.  He  earned  a  B.A.  from  The  Art  Center  College  of  Design  in  Los  Angeles  with  a  specialization  in  advertising  design.  His  teachers  were  Lorser  Feitlelson,  Harry  Carmean  and  John  Lagata.    Working  in  New  York  in  advertising  for  a  decade,  Francis  returned  to  California  and  lived  and  worked  in  San  Francisco.  Currently,  Francis  devotes  most  of  his  artistic  efforts  to  painting  the  California  landscape  and  making  figurative  paintings.

 Freericks  received  her  B.A.  from  Arcadia  University  and  her  M.F.A.  from  Columbia  University.  She  is  a  watercolor,  oil,  and  acrylic  painter  and  also  creates  oil  monotypes  and  collage.  Freericks  is  active  in  the  Santa  Barbara  art  scene,  and  is  a  member  of  the  Los  Padres  Watercolor  Society,  Goleta  Art  Association,  Southern  California  Artists  Painting  for  the  Environment,  Step  Once  Gallery,  and  the  Abstract  Art  Collective.

 Furmanski  is  a  Ventura  based  printmaker  and  founder  of  The  Inkspots  of  San  Buenventura,  the  only  fine  art  printmaking  collaborative  in  Ventura  County.  The  daughter  of  two  artists,  Furmanski  studied  design  at  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles  before  discovering  printmaking  at  El  Camino  College.  She  completed  a  Masterʼs  degree  in  art  therapy  at  Loyola  Marymount  University  and  worked  as  an  art  therapist  for  many  years.  Furmanski  teaches  printmaking  workshops  and  exhibits  her  work  regularly  throughout  the  region.

 Gebhart  graduated  from  California  State  University  with  a  B.A.  in  art  history,  and  later  pursued  a  second  degree  in  nursing.  Gebhart  returned  to  the  art  world  after  becoming  a  docent  at  the  Heard  Museum  for  Indigenous  People  and  the  Phoenix  Art  Museum.  Taking  various  recreational  art  classes  reignited  Gebhart’s  passion  for  her  own  artistic  practice.  Gebhart  is  also  an  active  member  of  the  printmaking  group,  Inkspots  of  San  Buenaventura,  Based  in  Ventura,  CA.  She  lives  locally  in  Santa  Barbara  where  she  works  as  a  museum  docent  and  artist.

 Born  in  Toronto,  Canada,  Frank  Gehry  is  a  Pritzker  Prize-­‐wining  architect  now  working  out  of  Los  Angeles,  CA.  Many  of  his  buildings,  including  the  Guggenheim  Museum  in  Bilbao  and  the  Walt  Disney  Concert  Hall  in  Los  Angeles,  are  among  the  most  iconic  contemporary  architectural  works.  Many  argue  that  he  is  the  greatest  living  architect.  His

 Gibbs  lives  and  works  in  Ventura,  CA.  She  explains  that,  “My  art  is  the  product  of  my  choice  of  media  that  I  feel  best  expresses  the  essence  of  my  subject.  Printmaking  techniques  are  numerous  and  allow  a  wide  range  of  expression  –  drawing,  painting,  carving,  sculpting,  and  transferring.”  

 118 Nancy  Gifford  

One  Very  Hot  Day  Mixed  Media    

 Gifford  studied  at  Kent  State  University,  and  after  graduating  she  lived  in  Europe  and  Morocco  working  in  films  and  modeling.  She  then  came  back  to  the  U.S.  to  work  on  her  mixed-­‐media  creations  and  paintings  –  creating  in  a  new  manner  by  adding  sculptural  techniques  to  her  paintings.  Gifford  has  exhibited  her  work  in  prominent  museums  such  as  the  Los  Angeles  County  Museum  of  Art  and  the  Carnegie  Art  Museum.  Continuing  a  long  project  “Not  My  Motherʼs  Quilt,”  Gifford  is  creating  her  own  version  of  large-­‐scale  quilts,  which  expands  media  based  on  her  childhood  memories  of  watching  her  mother  make  quilts.  A  resident  of  Santa  Barbara,  Gifford  is  also  an  active  supporter  of  local  museums,  galleries,  and  cultural  organizations.

Blue  Skies  Above    Mixed  Media    

 Gilbar  is  writer,  editor,  and  artist  who  is  known  for  his  mixed-­‐media  pieces,  collages,  and  altered  books.  Gilbar  was  the  founder  of  Speaking  of  Stories,  an  award-­‐winning  Santa  Barbara  theater  company  that  produces  short-­‐story  readings  for  the  stage.  He  has  also  produced  a  series  of  collage  postcards  that  highlight  several  renowned  authors,  which  has  combined  his,  “interest  in  literature  and  career  as  an  anthologist  of  sixteen  books”  with  his  love  of  collage.  Gilbar  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.

Kathleen  Gilje  was  born  in  Brooklyn,  NY.  She  trained  as  a  conservator  of  paintings  at  the  Museum  of  Capodimonte  in  Naples,  Italy.  Gilje  has  used  her  experience  as  the  basis  for  her  own  paintings,  where  she  recreates  and  re-­‐contextualizes  Old  Master  paintings.

 Known  as  the  artist  duo,  Gillen  &  Neale,  John  and  Ann  are  a  husband  and  wife  team  that  frequently  collaborates.  John  received  his  B.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles,  and  his  M.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Berkeley  where  Ann  also  received  both  her  B.A.  and  M.A.  Separately,  they  each  hold  their  own  outstanding  awards  and  honors.  John  twice  received  a  National  Endowment  for  the  Arts  Fellowship,  and  Annʼs  work  is  in  the  permanent  collection  at  Carnegie  Museum  of  Art.  Their  collaborative  paintings  involve  an  exploration  of  geometric  compositions,  color,  and  surface.  They  are  heavily  influenced  by  the  Mediterranean  world.  They  live  with  their  two  daughters  in  Northern  California.

 Gilmore  earned  her  B.A.  in  art,  mathematics,  and  Spanish  at  Greenville  College  in  Illinois,  and  then  her  M.F.A.  at  Azusa  Pacific  University  in  California.  Her  background  in  mathematics  influences  her  art  as  she  finds  links  between  the  worlds  of  science  and  visual  creativity.

Gustav  Klimt  Colored  Pencil  on  Paper    

 Glaser  is  one  of  the  most  well  known  and  celebrated  graphic  designers  in  the  U.S.  Perhaps  his  most  famous  work  is  the  iconic  “I  [heart]  New  York”  logo.  In  1954,  he  co-­‐founded  the  highly  influential  Pushpin  Studios,  and  in  1968  he  founded  New  York  Magazine,  which  has  become  a  highly  respected  publication  and  a  model  for  many  others.  In  1974,  he  established  Milton  Glaser,  Inc.  an  illustration  and  design  company  in  Manhattan,  New  York.  Glaser  has  had  solo  exhibitions  at  the  Museum  of  Modern  Art  in  New  York  and  at  the  Georges  Pompidou  Center  in  Paris.  He  continues  to  contribute  to  the  world  of  contemporary  graphic  design  both  as  an  artist  and  a  teacher,  and  he  is  a  major  spokesman  for  ethics  of  design.

 Golembe  is  best  known  for  her  brightly  colored  gouache  illustrations  and  acrylic  paintings,  but  is  also  an  award  winning  children’s  book  author  and  dedicated  art  teacher.  Her  illustrations  have  been  featured  in  greeting  cards,  educational  and  medical  projects  for  children,  and  in  various  Magazines.  Golembe  has  taught  art  and  illustration  at  colleges,  arts  institutions,  workshops,  and  elementary  schools,  and  she  currently  teaches  painting  and  drawing  at  Delray  Beach  Center  for  the  Arts  and  the  Art  School  of  the  Boca  Museum  of  Art  in  Florida.

 An  artist  who  has  explored  a  range  of  media,  Goodman  has  exhibited  his  work  in  New  York,  Chicago,  Seattle,  Los  Angeles,  and  beyond.  He  has  been  nominated  for  national  awards  in  the  visual  arts,  and  he  served  as  a  panelist  for  the  National  Endowment  of  the  Arts  in  2008.  Goodman  worked  at  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art  for  many  years,  and  previously  was  the  Director  of  the  Atkinson  Gallery  at  Santa  Barbara  City  College.  He  continues  to  live  in  Santa  Barbara.

 Graves  graduated  from  the  Maryland  Art  Institute,  and  then  traveled  to  Florence  to  study  the  painting  techniques  of  Old  Masters.  The  following  artists  have  been  most  influential  on  his  own  work:  Rembrandt,  Titian,  Velasquez,  and  also  the  French  academic  painters.  Graves  studied  at  the  Villa  Schifanoia  Graduate  School  of  Fine  Art,  and  went  on  to  found  The  Florence  Academy  of  Art  to  keep  the  tradition  of  Old  Master  painting  and  sculpture  alive.

 Anna  Griffin  studied  art  at  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles  and  California  State  University  –  studying  woodblock  printing  under  the  renowned  Toshi  Yoshida.  She  continues  to  practice  woodblock  printmaking,  as  well  as  collage  and  other  mixed-­‐media  approaches.  Griffin  often  relies  on  the  natural  world  for  inspiration,  especially  scenes  of  botanic  life.  Griffin  has  been  actively  engaged  in  the  Santa  Barbara  art  community  for  many  years,  and  served  on  the  first  board  of  directors  of  the  Santa  Barbara  Studio  Artist  group.

 Hahn  lived  in  Texas  and  around  California  before  eventually  settling  down  in  Santa  Barbara.  She  studied  at  Central  St.  Martinʼs  College  of  Art  and  Design  in  London,  and  the  University  of  Texas  at  Austin  where  she  earned  her  B.F.A.  Hahn  is  known  for  her  conceptually  driven  photographic  work,  which  employs  abstract  and  minimalistic  imagery  to  create  intentionally  ambiguous  experiences  for  viewers.  Besides  producing  her  own  artwork,  she  is  a  partner  and  co-­‐founder  of  Myopia  Design  and  Photography.

 Hale  received  his  BFA  and  M.F.A.  from  the  San  Francisco  Art  Institute,  and  also  studied  at  the  Skowhegan  School  of  Painting  and  Sculpture  in  Maine.  His  charcoal  and  pastel  drawings  feature  famous  landmarks  and  architectural  structures  placed  within  ethereal  landscapes.  Hale’s  work  has  been  exhibited  widely  in  solo  and  group  exhibitions  throughout  the  San  Francisco  Bay  Area  and  California,  and  he  is  represented  by  Gallery  Paule  Anglim  of  San  Francisco.  He  is  a  recipient  of  a  Pollock-­‐Krasner  Foundation  grant,  and  has  also  been  a  visiting  faculty  member  at  the  San  Francisco  Art  Institute,  California  College  of  the  Arts,  and  the  California  College  of  Arts  and  Crafts.  Hale  currently  lives  and  works  in  San  Francisco.

 Hinds  grew  up  in  Lexington,  M.A.  and  received  her  undergraduate  degree  from  Russell  State  College,  her  M.A.  from  Chapman  University,  and  her  M.F.A.  in  painting  and  drawing  from  the  University  of  Colorado.  She  is  heavily  influenced  by  the  styles  of  mid-­‐20th  century  artistic  movements  such  as  Abstract  Expressionism,  color-­‐field  painting,  and  hard-­‐edge  geometric  painting  –  Mark  Rothko  and  Paul  Klee  are  among  her  favorite  artists.  Hinds  creates  mixed-­‐media  abstract  works  that  combine  the  rich  quality  of  paint  with  collage.  She  has  also  taught  and  mentored  many  budding  artists,  and  is  a  Professor  Emeritus  of  Art.  Hinds  divides  her  time  between  Colorado  and  Montecito,  CA.

 Born  in  France,  Justesen  grew  up  studying  art  history.  Later  on,  she  put  her  own  hands  to  work  in  printmaking.  Justesen  received  her  B.A.  in  education  and  english  from  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles,  and  then  received  her  M.A.  in  Educational  Psychology  from  Cuesta  College  in  San  Luis  Obispo,  CA.  Afterwards,  she  studied  painting,  sculpture  and  mixed  media  in  Denmark.  Justesen’s  education  parallels  the  subject  of  her  prints;  she  is  constantly  fascinated  and  drawn  to  the  human  figure  and  its  many  stories.

Born  in  Sastin,  Czech  Republic,  Klaidman  was  hidden  by  a  Christian  family  during  the  Holocaust.  She  studied  at  the  City  University  of  New  York,  and  much  of  her  work  is  influence  by  her  memories,  particularly  of  her  Holocaust  experiences.

 Klarin  was  born  and  raised  in  Los  Angeles,  CA,  and  moved  north  to  study  painting  at  the  San  Francisco  Art  Institute  (B.F.A.).  Later,  Klarin  returned  to  Los  Angeles  to  continue  her  painting  studies  at  the  Otis  Art  Institute  of  Los  Angeles  (M.F.A.).  Klarin  has  found  endless  inspiration  from  the  giants  of  modernism:  Picasso,  Mondrian,  Kandinsky,  Diebenkorn,  etc.  Over  the  years,  she  has  sought  to  capture  the  “psychology”  of  Los  Angeles  through  her  landscape  and  cityscape  paintings.  Klarin  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Monica,  CA.

 Kraal  operates  a  consultant  business  on  strategic  planning.  He  formerly  worked  at  the  San  Francisco  Zoo.  Kraal  also  works  as  an  artist.  In  his  artist’s  statement  he  says:  “I  have  started  to  bring  my  paintings  in  a  more  organic  direction,  drawing  on  the  natural  world  for  inspiration.”

 Born  in  Zurich,  Switzerland,  Kuhn  first  studied  law  before  earning  an  M.F.A.  in  film  and  video  from  the  California  Institute  of  the  Arts.  While  his  background  is  in  film,  he  eventually  turned  to  painting  as  his  primary  medium.  According  to  Kuhn,  his  oil  paintings,  digital  drawings,  and  books  depict  figures  and  themes  that  have  occupied  him  since  childhood  –  using  his  artistic  practice  to  somehow  weave  a  connection  between  seemingly  unrelated  notions.  Kuhn  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles,  CA.

Lane  is  a  Santa  Barbara  Based  architect  who  received  his  B.A.  from  the  University  of  Colorado,  Boulder.  He  is  best  known  for  his  “green”  environmentally  conscious  approach  to  design.  His  fine  art  work  is  digitally  based;  he  manipulates  photographs,  symbols,  and  other  forms  within  his  distinctive  palette  of  colors  to  create  what  he  calls  “Primitive  Digital”  images.

 LaRiviere  received  a  Master’s  degree  in  fine  art  and  psychology  from  California  State  University  Los  Angeles  and  is  a  registered  art  therapist.  He  is  a  member  of  the  Central  Coast  Printmakers  group,  and  has  extensive  experience  working  in  etching,  woodblock,  linocut,  lithography  and  monoprinting.  LaRiviere  has  served  as  the  art  curator  for  the  San  Luis  Obispo  Gay  and  Lesbian  Alliance  since  March  2005.  After  retiring  from  the  California  Department  of  Corrections  he  moved  to  Morro  Bay,  CA  where  he  continues  to  live  and  work  as  an  artist.

 Larson  spent  many  years  in  Minnesota,  before  moving  to  northern  California.  She  works  as  an  illustrator,  a  muralist,  and  a  portrait  painter.  Her  preferred  media  are  watercolor,  pen  and  ink,  colored  pencil,  and  gouache.  Larson  is  particularly  fond  of  illustrating  children’s  books.

 Lettieri  grew  up  exploring  estuaries  in  Cape  Canaveral,  FL  very  close  to  her  neighborhood  on  the  coastal  marsh  –  the  present  Merritt  Island  National  Wildlife  Refuge.  Her  experience  there  made  her  attuned  to  the  “images  that  are  both  familiar  and  strange.”  Lettieri  earned  a  B.F.A.  at  the  University  of  Florida  with  a  focus  on  drawing  and  printmaking,  and  then  worked  as  an  artist  and  modern  dancer.  She  has  her  own  studio,  Cubberley  Artist  Studios,  which  is  an  artist  residency  program  in  Palo  Alto,  CA.  While  earning  her  M.F.A.  at  San  Jose  University  she  has  become  involved  in  the  Christian  artistic  community,  serving  on  the  board  of  directors  for  Christians  in  the  Visual  Arts.  Lettierri  is  also  a  founder  of  Arts  of  the  Covenant.

 Lipsky  is  best  known  as  a  Color  Field  painter  and  for  her  geometric  abstractions.  A  native  of  New  York  City,  she  graduated  from  Cornell  University  and  went  on  to  earn  her  M.F.A.  from  Hunter  College.  Lipsky’s  principal  teacher  and  mentor  was  the  abstract  sculptor  Tony  Smith.  Her  works  are  owned  by  25  major  art  museum  collections  including  the  Whitney  Museum  of  American  Art,  the  Hirshhorn  Museum,  the  Walker  Art  Center,  and  the  Brooklyn  Museum  of  Art.

 Lister  holds  a  studio  in  the  Lexington,  KY  area  where  she  is  also  an  adjunct  professor  of  art  at  Asbury  University.  According  to  Lister,  she  likes  to  focus  on,  “…finite  or  temporal  beauty,  found  in  the  biomorphic  shapes,  forms  and  colors  discovered  in  nature.”  Her  oil  paintings  and  charcoal  drawings  feature  marbled,  fluid  abstractions  that  evoke  mystery,  yet  are  beautiful  in  their  ambiguity.

 A  native  to  Cleveland,  OH,  Lobe  currently  lives  and  works  as  a  sculptor  in  New  York  City.  He  received  his  B.A.  from  Oberlin  College  and  M.F.A.  at  Hunter  College.  Lobe  looks  to  nature  for  his  inspiration  in  sculptures.  Combining  rocks  and  trees,  he  depicts  these  life-­‐sized  forms  using  an  adaptation  of  an  old  technique  known  as  repoussé.  He  hammers  out

 Loizeaux  recently  relocated  to  Santa  Barbara,  but  is  originally  from  Southwest  Harbor,  ME.    She  is  an  active  participant  in  the  Santa  Barbara  arts  scene.  Loizeaux  studied  graphic  arts  at  Bennington  College  in  Vermont  and  later  at  the  Pratt  Graphic  Art  Center  in  New  York.    She  also  studied  dance  and  established  her  own  modern  dance  company  in  New  York.    After  teaching  college,  Loizeaux  retired  to  Santa  Barbara  and  returned  to  her  favorite  methods  of  art  making:  prints,  watercolor,  and  collage.

 Lueken  is  a  native  of  New  Mexico,  but  has  lived  for  the  last  two  and  a  half  decades  in  Washington  State  where  she  resides  with  her  husband  John  in  a  house  he  built  for  them  in  the  foothills  of  Arlington.  She  has  been  a  professional  artist  for  over  40  years.  Plein  Air  landscapes  are  a  favorite  subject;  she  works  in  oil,  watercolor,  and  soft  pastel.  An  avid  gardener,  she  also  enjoys  painting  floral  still  life  paintings  and  watercolors.

 Based  in  Stillwater,  Minnesota,  Warren  MacKenzie  is  a  leader  among  contemporary  ceramic  artists.  His  has  work  in  private  collections  and  museums  around  the  world,  including  the  Metropolitan  Museum  of  Art  and  the  Smithsonian.  MacKenzie  initially  studied  painting  at  the  Art  Institute  of  Chicago,  but  postponed  his  studies  while  he  served  as  a  cartographer  during  World  War  II.  After  the  war,  he  transferred  to  the  ceramics

 A  potter  and  painter,  MacMillan  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.  Her  abstract  acrylic  paintings  are  inspired  by  nature.  She  associates  her  style  with  Abstract  Expressionism.  MacMillan  is  largely  self-­‐taught,  but  she  enjoys  attending  abstract  painting  workshops  with  Rick  Stich  in  Santa  Barbara.  In  her  paintings,  MacMillan  seeks  to  translate  emotional  states  into  visual  experiences  for  viewers.

 A  native  of  Staten  Island  New  York,  Margon  was  raised  in  Los  Angeles,  but  returned  to  New  York  in  her  20s.  She  studied  with  Hans  HoffMan,  William  Brice,  and  Rico  Lebrun.  She  is  a  painter,  digital  printmaker,  and  has  developed  her  own  unique  method  of  painting  with  sawdust.  She  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.

 Martin  was  raised  in  the  San  Fernando  Valley  of  California,  and  attended  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  where  she  earned  a  B.A.  in  painting  and  history,  as  well  as  two  teaching  credentials.  For  many  years  she  has  been  an  artist  and  teacher  in  Santa  Barbara,  and  has  participated  in  numerous  solo  and  group  exhibitions.  Martin’s  art  reflects  on  the  disappearing  natural  world  and  its  relationship  to  American  consumerist  society.  As  a  fellow  of  the  University  of  California's  South  Coast  Writing  Project,  she  has  written  grants  and  given  presentations  on  the  creative  process.

Meyers  holds  a  M.F.A.  degree  in  ceramics  from  the  School  for  American  Craftsmen  at  the  Rochester  Institute  of  Technology,  and  B.S.  and  M.S.  degrees  in  art  education  from  the  State  University  of  New  York  College  at  Buffalo.  He  taught  at  the  University  of  South  Carolina  at  Columbia,  and  then  spent  the  next  two  decades  teaching  at  the  University  of  Georgia  in  Athens  where  he  retired  as  Professor  Emeritus.  Meyers  most  often  works  with  red  earthenware  –  continually  exploring  the  material  and  the  process  of  creation.  He  is  widely  recognized  for  the  curious,  whimsical,  and  often  perturbed  animals  he  uses  to  decorate  his  wares.  Meyers  resides  in  Athens,  GA.

 Born  in  New  York  City,  Meyersohn  has  pursued  landscape  painting.  She  currently  lives  and  works  in  western  Massachusetts.  She  works  both  outdoors  employing  a  plein  air  technique  and  paints  from  photographs,  which  she  manipulates  in  Photoshop.  What  appeals  to  Meyersohn  is  the  drama  of  nature  –  from  approaching  storms  to  stunning  sunsets.  She  often  works  in  large  format  –  five  or  six  foot  tall  panels,  but  she  also  has  worked  on  a  small  10-­‐inch  format.  She  teaches  art  at  Smith  College.

 Miyoshi  learned  printmaking  from  Tokuzo  Okabe,  a  Master  silkscreen  printer  in  Japan.  She  is  well  known  for  her  printmaking  workshops,  which  are  held  in  Los  Angeles  and  New  York.    Currently  she  teaches  printmaking  at  California  State  University,  Long  Beach.  Miyoshi's  prints  transform  everyday  objects  or  mundane  occurrences  into  sensual  and  seductive  art  works.    She  has  exhibited  in  Albuquerque,  NM,  Pasadena,  CA,  and  Santa  Fe,  NM.

 A  figurative  painter  originally  from  New  York,  Moevs  moved  to  Los  Angeles  and  changed  her  focus  to  landscape  painting.  Her  works  are  more  concerned  with  light  than  land  –  light  drenched  canvases  become  abstract  ions  of  a  landscape.  Moevs  has  developed  a  highly  personalized  painting  technique  that  often  involves  moving  paint  around  her  canvases  with  her  gloved  hands.  Moevs  teaches  at  Loyola  Marymount  University  in  Los  Angeles,  where  she  is  a  highly  respected  professor  of  art.

 Moser  holds  a  B.S.  in  art  education  from  The  University  of  Chattanooga  in  Tennessee,  and  completed  his  graduate  work  at  the  University  of  Massachusetts  at  Amherst.  He  is  an  award-­‐winning  illustrator  and  designer  of  over  250  books,  as  well  as  a  painter,  printmaker,  author,  and  professor.  His  edition  of  Alice's  Adventures  in  Wonderland  won  the  1983  National  Book  Award.  Moser  has  been  an  artist  in  residence  at  Dartmouth  College  and  the  University  of  Iowa  among  others,  and  has  taught  at  the  Rhode  Island  School  of  Design  before  joining  the  faculty  of  Smith  College  where  is  a  Professor-­‐in-­‐Residence  in  Art  and  Printer  to  the  College.  His  naturalistic  renderings  of  various  subjects

 A  Santa  Barbara  resident  since  2003,  Mourad  is  an  artist  working  in  ceramics,  photography,  and  mixed  media.  She  earned  a  Master’s  degree  in  Social  Science  Administration  from  the  Mandel  School  for  Applied  Sciences  at  Cast  Western  Reserve  University  in  Cleveland,  OH,  and  works  as  an  educator  and  consultant  through  Mooneen  Mourad  Enterprises.  Mourad  is  active  in  the  local  arts  scene,  serving  as  a  member  of  the  Westmont  Ridley-­‐Tree  Museum  Art  Council,  and  as  a  docent  for  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art.

 Born  and  raised  in  Santa  Barbara,  Brad  Nack  is  most  recognized  for  art  pieces  reflecting  the  historic  styles  of  Joan  Miro  and  Henri  Matisse,  as  well  as  his  contemporaries  such  as  Barry  McGee  and  Thomas  Campbell.  Both  of  his  parents  were  artists,  his  mother  an  accomplished  painter,  and  his  father  who  studied  under  Fernand  Léger  in  Paris  in  the  1940s.  Nack’s  paintings  exhibit  vigorous  abstract  ions  that  spin  with  energy  and  vibrant  color.  He  continues  to  live  and  work  out  of  Santa  Barbara,  CA.

 Nava  studied  art  at  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  and  earned  his  M.F.A.  at  the  Villa  Schifanoia  Graduate  School  of  Fine  Art  in  Florence,  Italy.  His  work  is  housed  in  major  museums  around  the  U.S.  and  internationally  including  the  National  Museum  of  American  Art  in  Washington  D.C.  Nava  has  created  large  public  works  such  as  the  renowned  commissioned  tapestries  for  the  new  Cathedral  of  Our  Lady  of  the  Angels  in  Los  Angeles,  CA.  The  cycle  of  the  25  tapestries  portray  The  Communion  of  the  Saints  and  show  saints  from  around  the  world.  These  tapestries  won  the  National  Interfaith  Forum  on  Religion,  Art  and  Architecture  Design  Honor  Award  for  Visual  Art  in  2003.  Nava  has  a  deep  passion  for  drawing  the  human  figure,  and  he  regularly  sketches  from  his  favorite  models.

 Neufeldt  received  his  B.F.A.  from  Ohio  Wesleyan  University  and  his  M.F.A.  from  the  Pratt  Institute.  Neufeldt  is  originally  from  Mount  Vernon,  New  York,  but  has  called  the  West  Coast  home  for  nearly  40  years.  He  works  in  a  variety  of  media  including  welding,  woodworking,  ceramics,  assemblage,  and  pen  and  ink.  Neufeldt’s  most  recognizable  pieces  are  his  large  assemblage  works.  He  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara  with  his  wife,  Susan.

Neunuebel  is  an  alumna  of  Westmont  College.  She  settled  in  Santa  Barbara  after  college,  and  now  owns  her  own  graphic  design  company.  Neunuebel’s  work  employs  a  variety  of  media,  but  she  most  often  gravitates  to  assemblage  and  collage.  She  has  served  on  the  Art  Council  at  the  Westmont  Ridley-­‐Tree  Museum  of  Art,  and  along  with  her  husband  is  an  active  member  of  the  local  arts  scene.  Neunuebel  divides  her  time  between  Santa  Barbara,  CA  and  Santa  Fe,  NM.

 Nibbe  receive  her  B.S.  in  art  education  from  Ball  State  University  in  Muncie,  IN  where  she  would  eventually  teach  art  education  and  ceramics.  Later  she  moved  to  California  with  her  husband,  Loren,  who  is  also  an  artist.  Nibbe  began  a  pottery  business  and  then  returned  to  teaching  art  at  Crane  School  in  Montecito.  While  working  at  the  Crane  School  she  was  offered  a  grant  to  study  printmaking,  and  subsequently  discovered  her  passion  for  monotype  printmaking.

 Nienow  was  born  and  raised  in  Santa  Barbara,  and  continues  to  live  and  work  in  there.  She  studied  English  literature,  but  the  arts  came  to  her  as  a  “calling.”  She  is  a  self-­‐taught  artist,  and  her  practice  consists  primarily  of  realistic  urban  landscapes  and  quirky  still  life  paintings  consisting  of  strange  dolls  and  toys.

 Oser  was  born  in  Pennsylvania,  but  has  lived  and  worked  in  California  for  over  four  decades.  She  earned  a  B.A.  in  English  and  went  on  to  earn  a  law  degree,  but  she  always  wanted  to  pursue  a  career  as  an  artist.  She  studied  at  the  Pennsylvania  Academy  of  Fine  Arts  and  then  studied  art  at  Sarah  Lawrence  College.  Currently  a  resident  of  Emeryville,  CA,  Oser  has  won  many  awards  for  her  watercolors.

You  Can  Be  Sure...  Watercolor  and  Collage  

 Ousley  loves  art,  especially  outsider  art.  She  co-­‐manages  Summerland’s  Just  Folk  Gallery  educating  people  about  American  folk  art  and  self-­‐taught  artists.  Ousley  is  also  an  artist  herself.  She  pursued  her  M.F.A.  in  Fashion  and  Art  at  Stephens  College.  Ousley  has  also  worked  in  film  and  theatre  doing  costume  design.

 Owens  is  a  local  Santa  Barbara  artist.  She  enjoys  creating  art  in  a  variety  of  media,  as  well  as  indulging  her  craft  and  design  interests.  Owens  says  that,  “When  making  things,  I  gravitate  toward  salvage.”  Recently,  she  has  enjoyed  creating  collage  and  mixed-­‐media  pieces  that  incorporate  found  tin  scraps  that  are  repurposed  into  whimsical  compositions.

Parrish  was  born  and  raised  in  Alaska,  and  he  earned  his  B.F.A.  from  the  University  of  Nevada-­‐Reno  and  his  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.  Parrish’s  works  include  photography,  as  well  as  an  extensive  series  of  resin  and  fiberglass  works,  which  manifest  themselves  on  wood  panels,  in  sculptural  configurations,  or  as  contemporary  totems.  Parrish  also  lends  his  artistic  expertise  to  Boat  Yard  Studios,  a  creative  consulting  service.  He  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Southern  California.

 Pastor  received  his  M.F.A.  from  Azusa  Pacific  University.  He  has  taught  art  at  the  Art  Institute  of  California,  Inland  Empire;  Art  Depot,  City  of  Fontana,  CA.;  and  Chaffey  Community  Art  Association.  Pastor  is  a  painter  and  a  draftsman  working  in  a  contemporary  style  of  classical  realism.

 Peacock  lives  and  works  in  Northern  Wisconsin.  He  received  a  B.F.A.  in  art  with  a  specialization  in  painting,  and  a  B.S.  in  Geology  from  Florida  State  University  in  Tallahassee.  Later  he  earned  his  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  Texas  at  Austin.  Peacock  has  exhibited  his  art  across  the  nation,  and  has  also  taught  art  at  the  college  level.

 Perlitz  is  originally  from  Canada,  but  received  her  B.A.  from  Bard  College  and  her  M.F.A.  from  the  Tyler  School  of  Art  at  Temple  University  in  Philadelphia,  PA.  She  now  lives  and  works  in  Portland,  OR  where  she  teaches  art  at  Lewis  &  Clark  College.  She  has  exhibited  widely  and  has  received  awards  for  her  artwork.

 Peterson  was  raised  in  Minnesota  and  attended  Concordia  College  in  Moorhead.  She  was  a  teacher  before  starting  a  family,  and  eventually  moved  with  her  family  to  Rogue  Valley  in  Oregon.  She  belongs  to  the  Watercolor  Society  of  Oregon,  California  Watercolor  Association,  Northwest  Watercolor  Society,  and  Montana  Watercolor  Society.  Peterson  has  been  recognized  with  numerous  awards  and  prizes  for  her  art.

 Phillips  is  a  San  Francisco-­‐based  artist  with  a  particular  interest  in  portraiture.  He  uses  both  traditional  drawing  materials  and  unconventional  media  to  create  his  striking  photorealist  works.  Phillips  often  blends  graphite  and  charcoal  with  digital  painting  techniques  in  a  single  work.  He  is  an  alum  of  Westmont  College  with  a  B.F.A.  in  studio  art.

 Prescott  was  born  in  Washington  D.C.  and  received  his  M.F.A.  in  Art  from  the  Rinehart  School  of  Sculpture  and  The  Maryland  Institute  College  of  Art.  He  teaches  art  at  Messiah  College,  where  he  received  the  Distinguished  Professorship  grant.  Prescott  currently  lives  and  works  in  Pennsylvania.

 The  Swedish-­‐born  Astrid  Preston  studied  English  Literature  at  the  University  of  California  Los  Angeles  (B.A.),  but  has  since  come  to  be  considered  as  one  of  America’s  most  important  contemporary  landscape  painters.  Her  artwork  has  been  widely  exhibited  throughout  Asia  and  the  United  States,  and  she  has  been  featured  in  many  prominent  art  publications,  such  as  Art  in  America  and  ArtForum.  Preston’s  studio  is  located  in  Santa  Monica,  CA  and  she  is  represented  by  the  Craig  Krull  Gallery.

 Privitt  taught  art  for  four  decades  at  institutions  such  as  Pepperdine  University  (Malibu,  CA),  Harding  University  in  his  native  Arkansas;  and  Lubbock  Christian  University  in  Texas.  He  is  best  known  as  a  sculptor  with  a  keen  sense  of  humor.  Privitt  earned  a  B.A.  from  Harding  College  (Arkansas),  his  M.A.  from  the  University  of  Tulsa,  and  his  M.F.A.  from  Indiana  University.  

 279 Keith  Puccinelli  

Tonto    Ink  &  Cherry  Juice    

 A  native  of  San  Jose,  CA,  Puccinelli  earned  his  B.F.A.  from  San  Jose  State  University.  He  enjoys  creating  drawings,  sculptures,  and  interactive  installations.  Puccinelli  later  opened  Puccinelli  Design  where  his  creative  work  in  design,  illustration,  and  advertising  has  come  to  be  internationally  recognized.  Much  of  his  oeuvre  is  in  the  permanent  collection  at  the  Ben  Maltz  Gallery  at  the  Otis  College  of  Art  and  Design  in  Los  Angeles.  In  the  fall  of  2011,  a  retrospective  of  his  art  opened  at  the  Atkinson  Gallery  at  Santa  Barbara  City  College.  Puccinelli  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.

 Quinn  earned  a  degree  in  education  from  the  University  of  Nebraska  and  an  Elementary  Teaching  Credential  from  California  State  University,  Northridge.  She  is  a  well-­‐known  Santa  Barbara  muralist,  award-­‐winning  quilter,  and  poet.  Quinn  is  known  for  employing  the  trompe  lʼoeil  or  “fool  the  eye”  technique  in  her  painting,  which  reflects  her  playfulness  and  humor.  She  currently  works  as  an  Art  Specialist  at  a  private  Santa  Barbara  school.

 Ron  Raasch  pursued  a  successful  career  as  an  architect  before  retiring  to  Powell  Butte,  OR.  He  became  enchanted  with  creating  drawings  and  watercolor  paintings,  and  he  loves  depicting  the  beauty  of  Central  Oregon  landscapes.  His  works  has  been  recognized  in  exhibitions  and  he  is  the  recipient  of  many  prizes  for  his  work.

 A  native  of  the  West  Coast,  George  Radon  first  became  interested  in  the  arts  after  studying  at  the  Brooks  Institute.  Radon  is  known  locally  for  his  paper  collages,  mixed-­‐media  works,  and  decorated  pots  and  gourds.  He  draws  inspiration  from  nature,  concentrating  heavily  on  landscapes.  He  continues  to  live  and  work  in  the  Santa  Barbara  area.

 Regis  is  a  Trinidadian-­‐born  artist  living  in  Los  Angeles,  and  he  graduated  from  the  University  of  Southern  California.  A  fashion  designer  and  painter,  he  blends  his  talents  and  techniques  from  both  vocations.  Regis  incorporates  the  exotic  cultures  of  the  world  in  his  works  through  abstraction  and  a  focus  on  drip  painting  and  collage.  Regis  is  involved  in  philanthropic  organizations  and  has  partnered  with  The  Remedee  Foundation  to  bring  art,  film,  and  technology  resources  to  under-­‐served  youth  around  the  world.

Two  Roman  Trees    Watercolor    

 Reiner  studied  art  at  the  Parsons  School  of  Design  in  Paris  and  New  York  City,  and  the  Otis  Art  Institute  in  Los  Angeles.  The  primary  subject  matter  of  Reinerʼs  paintings,  drawings,  and  prints  are  trees  that  are  depicted  in  various  forms  and  states  –  yet  all  without  a  particular  context  or  natural  surrounding  environment.  His  trees  stand  alone  in  the  midst  of  foggy  backgrounds  or  against  dramatic,  empty  voids.  Reiner  has  had  solo  exhibitions  throughout  Europe  and  America,  and  currently  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles.

 Ricks  is  a  local  Santa  Barbara  artist,  but  also  spends  time  living  and  painting  in  Massachusetts  and  the  south  of  France.  She  is  a  plein  air  landscape  artist  with  a  gestural,  energetic  style.  Besides  painting,  Ricks  is  also  passionate  about  land  conservation,  which  is  naturally  reflected  in  her  art.  She  has  exhibited  her  work  locally,  and  continues  to  be  actively  involved  in  the  Santa  Barbara  arts  community.

How  Much  Further?    Photograph  

 Roberts  was  born  in  Danzig,  Poland  and  was  educated  in  Germany  and  England.  While  living  in  Scotland,  she  joined  a  local  camera  club  and  fell  in  love  with  nature  photography.  Roberts  then  relocated  to  Santa  Barbara,  CA  where  she  further  developed  her  photography  talents.  She  was  among  the  first  women  to  be  elected  into  the  London  Salon  of  Photography,  and  has  since  received  other  awards  and  recognitions  such  as  an  induction  into  the  Fellowship  of  the  Royal  Photographic  Society  of  Great  Britain.

 Paul  Roehl  was  raised  in  the  South  Bay  region  of  San  Francisco,  CA.  He  received  an  M.F.A.  in  pictorial  arts  from  San  Jose  State  University.  For  two  decades,  Roehl  has  taught  college  level  painting,  printmaking,  and  drawing,  as  well  as  art  history.  He  is  active  in  the  Bay  Area  arts  scene  exhibiting  widely  in  Berkeley,  Santa  Cruz,  and  Monterey,  among  other  locations.  As  a  landscape  painter,  Roehl  is  inspired  by  the  atmospheric  effects  that  French  Barbizon  artists  introduced  in  plein  air  painting  in  the  19th  century.

 Rosen  pursued  a  B.A.  in  Arts  and  Media  and  an  M.A.  in  Child  and  Family  studies.  She  enjoys  making  artist’s  books  and  has  taught  bookbinding  in  workshops  in  New  Haven,  CT  for  twelve  years.  Her  artist’s  books  can  be  found  in  prestigious  collections  including  Yale  University,  The  Library  of  the  Boston  Athenaeum,  and  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles'  Clark  Library.  Rosen  lives  and  works  in  Connecticut.

 Rosenberg-­‐Dent  earned  her  M.F.A.  at  the  Cranbrook  Academy  of  Art.  She  has  taught  at  universities  such  as  Pennsylvania  State  University  and  the  University  of  Michigan.  She  was  also  chair  of  the  Ceramics  and  Glass  department  at  Ohio  University.  She  finds  physical  process  of  shaping  clay  very  refreshing  and  inspiring.  Her  ceramic  work  is  housed  in  the  permanent  collections  of  museums  such  as  the  Smithsonian  Institute,  the  Detroit  Institute  of  Art,  and  the  Canton  Art  Institute.  Currently,  she  is  actively  involved  in  the  Santa  Barbara  arts  scene,  and  is  affiliated  with  the  Santa  Barbara  Art  Association.

 Rupp  graduated  from  Westmont  College  with  a  B.F.A.  in  studio  art,  and  has  continued  to  be  an  active  member  of  the  Santa  Barbara  art  scene.  He  teaches  sculpture  at  Westmont  College,  and  also  serves  as  the  Collections  Manager  at  the  Westmont  Ridley-­‐Tree  Museum  Art.  Focusing  on  ceramics  and  sculpting,  Ruppʼs  work  is  in  the  Mackenzie-­‐Hamada  tradition.  Rupp  recently  completed  an  M.F.A.  program  at  Azusa  Pacific  University  with  a  specialization  in  sculpture.

 Ryden  received  his  B.F.A.  from  the  Art  Center  College  of  Design  in  Pasadena.  Ryden  is  best  known  for  his  paintings,  which  combine  more  traditional  high  art  styles  with  low  art  and  pop  culture  themes.  He  is  also  recognized  as  one  of  the  first  successful  artists  within  the  “Pop  Surrealism”  genre  that  first  emerged  in  the  1990s.  He  currently  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles.

 Salcher  studied  art  in  Vienna,  Innsbruck,  and  Paris  before  becoming  a  free-­‐lance  artist  with  many  prestigious  commissions  in  Europe  and  in  the  U.S.  She  relocated  to  California  where  she  was  an  illustrator  and  web  designer  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  till  2008.  She  currently  works  out  of  Santa  Barbara,  CA  and  Leiden,  Netherlands.  Her  most  recent  work  was  a  collaborative  project  in  Innsbruck,  Austria  where  she  created  an  installation  of  glass-­‐blown  brains  for  several  important  architectural  landmarks.

 Samuels  received  her  B.F.A.  from  Syracuse  University  in  New  York.  Her  work  is  driven  by  a  creative  quilt  and  garment-­‐making  artistic  process  that  combines  her  interests  in  fashion,  textiles,  craft,  and  architecture.  Samuels  summarizes  her  work  as,  “Clothing  as  Identity.”  She  resonates  with  the  metaphors  that  free-­‐flowing  stitches  and  hand-­‐sewn  patterns  provide  in  relation  to  the  human  experience.  Samuels  has  exhibited  her  work  in  solo  and  group  shows  around  the  U.S.  and  in  Europe.  She  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Monica,  CA.

 Savage  was  born  in  Gothenburg,  Sweden,  but  moved  to  Idaho  to  work  as  an  architect  with  her  American  husband,  a  construction  professional.  They  both  started  practicing  architecture  and  construction  in  Santa  Barbara.  She  continues  to  live  in  Santa  Barbara  and  has  turned  her  attention  to  fine  art.  Savage  is  noted  as  a  portrait  artist,  but  also  loves  working  in  watercolor.  She  is  active  with  Santa  Barbara  arts  organizations,  and  she  often  exhibits  her  art  in  local  shows.

 Savage  earned  her  B.A.  and  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara,  and  subsequently  began  teaching  art.  Savage  enjoyed  a  long  tenure  as  a  professor  of  art  at  Westmont  College  and  recently  retired.  Her  paintings  explore  themes  of  spirituality  and  transformation.  Silver  vessels  in  Savageʼs  work  serve  as  a  personal  metaphor  for  the  human  spirit  in  relationship  to  God.

 Scarminach  received  her  B.A.  and  M.A.  degrees  in  Psychology  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  and  Antioch  University  respectively,  and  has  been  a  teacher  by  profession  for  many  years.  It  was  not  until  much  later  in  her  adult  life  that  she  began  to  seriously  consider  art-­‐making  after  enrolling  in  a  “Mommy  and  Me”  preschool  art  class  with  her  then  three  year  old  daughter.  Scarminach  has  explored  a  variety  of  media  including  painting,  drawing,  assemblage,  book  arts,  collage,  and  photography.  She  lives  and  works  locally  with  her  family,  and  has  continued  to  be  very  active  in  the  Santa  Barbara  art  community.

 Schachter  pursued  a  successful  career  as  a  research  microbiologist  in  New  York  City,  but  she  was  always  attracted  to  making  ceramics.  She  took  night  classes  at  Greenwich  House  Pottery  and  ceramics  became  a  rewarding  avocation  for  her.  She  moved  to  the  San  Francisco  Bay  Area  and  focused  full  time  on  pottery.  Schachter  opened  a  studio  in  Mountain  View  called  "Plum  Tree  Pottery."  She  then  moved  her  studio  to  downtown  Palo  Alto,  and  then  to  Portola  Valley.  Schachter’s  work  is  represented  in  the  permanent  collection  of  the  Renwick  Gallery  at  the  Smithsonian  American  Art  Museum  in  Washington,  D.C.

 Born  in  Los  Angeles,  Ilene  Segalove  is  a  prominent  conceptual  artist  that  works  primarily  in  video  and  photography.  She  received  a  B.F.A.  degree  from  the  University  of  California  in  Santa  Barbara,  and  later  studied  under  John  Baldessari  at  CalArts.  After  graduating  from  college,  Segalove  purchased  a  Portapak  from  Nam  June  Paik’s  girlfriend,  which  led  her  involvement  in  early  video  production  and  experimentation  in  the  1970s.  Segalove’s  works  have  been  collected  by  major  arts  institutions  such  as  the  Los  Angeles  County  Museum  of  Art,  the  Museum  of  Modern  Art  (New  York,  NY),  and  the  Metropolitan  Museum  of  Art.  She  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.

 Peter  Sís  was  born  in  Brno,  Czech  Republic,  and  is  an  internationally  renowned  illustrator,  author,  and  filmmaker.  He  studied  at  the  Academy  of  Applied  Arts  in  Prague  as  well  as  the  Royal  College  of  Art  in  London.  Sís  has  been  awarded  numerous  titles  and  recognitions  for  his  artistic  talents,  and  he  was  named  a  MacArthur  Fellow  in  2003.  The  Museum  of  Modern  Art,  New  York  permanently  holds  the  collection  of  his  film  work.  Madeleine  Sís  is  Peter’s  daughter,  and  was  the  inspiration  behind  his  character,  Madlenka,  who  is  featured  in  a  series  of  his  illustrated  books.

 Sola  studied  American  Literature  at  the  University  of  Michigan  (B.A.),  and  received  his  M.F.A.  from  the  Otis  College  of  Art  and  Design  in  Los  Angeles,  CA.  His  videos,  colored  pencil  drawings,  and  oil  paintings  feature  prominent  figures  in  the  art  world,  himself,  and  others  in  absurdly  bazaar,  humorous,  and  often  brutally  violent  scenarios.  His  disconcerting  and  psychologically  complex  works  have  been  described  as  frank  commentaries  on  aspects  of  21st  century  American  life,  as  well  as  an  uncovering  of  Sola’s  “unregulated  id.”  He  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Los  Angeles.

 Speirs  received  her  B.F.A.  at  Converse  College  in  Spartanburg,  S.C.  and  then  went  on  to  earn  an  M.F.A.  at  the  University  of  Georgia,  Athens.  She  also  had  an  opportunity  to  study  art  in  Cortona,  Italy.  When  she  moved  to  Santa  Barbara  she  was  immediately  inspired  by  the  beauty  of  the  area’s  organic  objects.  She  excels  in  rendering  still  life  subjects  like  a  vegetable,  fruit  or  flower  seen  from  an  unusual  point  of  view.  Her  style  incorporates  bold  forms  and  repeated  patterns.  She  exhibits  her  works  regionally  and  is  represented  in  several  private  art  collections.

 Stamaty  was  born  in  Brooklyn,  New  York,  and  grew  up  under  the  artistic  tutelage  of  his  parents  who  were  both  professional  cartoonists.  He  received  his  B.F.A.  degree  from  Cooper  Union  in  New  York  City,  and  has  since  established  himself  as  a  highly  successful  book  author,  illustrator,  and  cartoon  artist.  Stamaty  is  the  creator  of  the  Washingtoon  comic  strip,  and  his  work  has  been  featured  in  the  Washington  Post,  the  Boston  Globe,  Time  Magazine,  The  New  Yorker,  and  the  Wall  Street  Journal,  among  others.  He  is  also  the  author-­‐illustrator  of  ten  children’s  books  and  graphic  novels.

 Stevens’  artwork  explores  a  range  of  existential  notions  including  identity,  self-­‐presentation,  personality,  intellect,  the  human  body,  embodied  imagery,  and  human  relationships.  He  is  known  for  his  silhouettes  of  human  figures  –  both  mythological  and  real  –  that  are  cut  out  of  brightly  colored  and  patterned  fabrics.  Stevens  explains  in  his  artist  statement:  “I  gravitate  toward  tactile  media,  constructing  objects  in  the  likeness  of  clothing  to  remind  us  of  our  bodies  and  enhance  personality.”  He  currently  lives  and  works  in  Mount  Vernon,  OH.

Spring  Green  Watercolor    

 Stewart  studied  at  Texas  A&M  University  graduating  in  1975  with  an  M.A.  in  architecture.  During  that  time,  he  became  enamored  by  the  watercolor  medium  and  was  deeply  inspired  by  the  work  of  Winslow  Homer,  Andrew  Wyeth,  and  Edward  Hopper.  Stewart  has  enjoyed  a  successful  career  as  both  an  architect,  and  as  a  watercolorist.  He  has  designed  various  buildings  in  Texas  including  the  Clayton  Genealogical  Research  Library  in  downtown  Houston,  and  has  exhibited  his  artwork  around  the  U.S.  in  institutions  such  as  the  Tucson  Museum  of  Art  and  the  Albuquerque  Museum  of  Art.  He  lives  and  works  in  Houston,  TX.

 Stier  currently  lives  and  works  in  Redlands,  CA.  She  attended  Westmont  College  in  Santa  Barbara  where  she  obtained  her  B.A.  in  Studio  Art,  and  also  completed  two  art  residencies  –  one  in  Orvieto,  Italy  and  a  second  in  New  York  City.  Stier  currently  works  as  a  freelance  photographer  and  graphic  designer.

 Born  in  Seattle,  WA,  Stockholder  grew  up  in  Vancouver  and  earned  her  B.F.A.  at  the  University  of  Victoria  in  British  Columbia,  and  her  M.F.A.  at  Yale  University.  She  first  taught  at  Yale  University  and  in  2012  chaired  the  Department  of  Visual  Arts  at  the  University  of  Chicago,  but  subsequently  returned  to  Yale  as  the  current  Director  of  Graduate  Studies  in  Sculpture.  Stockholder  is  the  recipient  of  many  awards  and  grants

 Storms  graduated  from  Otis  Art  Institute  of  Los  Angeles,  and  also  studied  art  at  Oxford  University  in  England.  He  has  exhibited  widely  in  California  and  has  taught  art  at  the  college  level.  Storms  is  a  sought-­‐after  speaker  on  various  art  topics,  and  has  been  featured  in  numerous  art  publications.

 Strasburg  was  born  in  Salt  Lake  City,  UT  and  moved  to  Santa  Barbara,  CA  with  her  family  as  a  young  girl.  She  received  her  B.F.A.  in  drawing  and  painting  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara,  and  has  also  studied  printmaking  at  the  College  of  Santa  Fe  and  Santa  Barbara  City  College.  Strasburg  has  always  been  enchanted  by  nature,  especially  in  the  solitude  of  a  quiet  moment  outside.  She  most  often  paints  tranquil  landscapes  that  feature  wide  stretches  of  open  space,  but  she  also  has  an  equal  interest  in  the  visual  qualities  achieved  with  printmaking.  Strasburg  prefers  painting  in  her  studio  once  she  has  spent  time  outdoors  sketching  and  taking  photographs.  She  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.

 Suggs  was  born  in  Forth  Worth,  TX  and  was  raised  in  San  Diego,  CA.  He  received  his  B.A.,  M.A.,  M.F.A.  degrees  from  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles.  He  has  taught  art  at  Florida  State  University,  the  University  of  Southern  California,  the  Otis  Art  Institute,  and  at  UCLA  since  1983.  Suggs  is  the  recipient  of  two  National  Endowment  for  the  Arts  Grants,  and  his  work  has  been  exhibited  around  the  U.S.  He  has  worked  in  a  variety  of  media  such  as  painting,  drawing,  photography,  and  sculpture;  and  he  has  been  associated  with  Conceptualism,  Photorealism,  Pop  Art,  and  Abstract  Expressionism.  Suggs  lives  in  Los  Angeles.

 Sutz  studied  art  at  the  Chicago  Academy  of  Art  and  the  American  Academy  of  Art  before  launching  a  successful  career  as  a  commercial  artist.  Sutz  always  kept  active  as  a  fine  artist,  as  well  –  working  in  oil,  pen  and  ink,  pastel,  and  watercolor.  He  is  best  known  for  his  life  masks  of  important  figures.  He  lives  and  works  in  Scottsdale,  AZ  where  he  continues  to  paint  urban  scenes  and  receives  commissions  for  his  life  masks  and  portraits.

 Suzuki  was  Born  in  Tokyo,  Japan,  and  emigrated  to  the  U.S.  in  1988  with  his  family.  He  received  his  M.F.A.  from  Claremont  Graduate  University,  and  along  with  his  brother,  Macha  Suzuki,  has  exhibited  his  work  throughout  Southern  California.  References  to  Japanese-­‐American  culture  form  the  conceptual  basis  of  Suzuki’s  work.  His  paintings,  prints,  and  sculpture  blend  traditional  iconography  with  pop  culture  style.  He  currently  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles.

 359 Cheryl  Ann  Thomas  Vanitas

Thomas  graduated  from  the  Art  Center  College  of  Design  in  Pasadena,  CA  (B.F.A.).  Within  the  last  two  decades  Thomas  has  established  herself  as  an  important  ceramic  artist,  and  has  developed  a  modified  coiling  technique  to  create  delicate  and  unique  porcelain  sculptures.  Thomas  starts  her  process-­‐driven  works  by  forming  tall,  thin  pots  of  coiled  porcelain  and  leaving  the  weight  of  the  clay  to  collapse  upon  itself  while  being  fired.  Thomas  describes  her  work  as  “a  real  and  distinct  experience  of  creation  and  loss.”  Besides  her  experimentations  with  clay,  Thomas  also  works  in  bronze  and  stainless  steel.  She  lives  and  works  in  Southern  California.    

 360 Michele  Thompson  

Silenced  Charcoal  on  Paper  

 Thompson  works  in  a  variety  of  media  including  charcoal  and  oil  paint.  In  2012,  she  participated  in  a  public  art  project  in  Santa  Clarita,  CA  where  local  artists  were  commissioned  to  create  original  artworks  to  be  sold  in  a  vending  machine,  which  would  raise  funds  for  city-­‐run  arts  education  programs.  For  this  “Art2Go”  vending  machine,  Thompson  created  an  oil  painting  that  took  her  over  twenty  hours  to  complete.  She  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Santa  Clarita.

 Tierney  graduated  from  the  University  of  Iowa,  and  has  studied  photography,  printmaking,  painting,  and  jewelry  design.  Currently,  her  main  artistic  focus  is  jewelry-­‐making  using  a  variety  of  precious  metals  and  enamels.  Tierney  is  known  for  her  bird  designs  in  sterling  silver  taken  from  her  original  photographs.  Besides  jewelry-­‐making,  her  art  practice  particularly  emphasizes  collage  and  mixed  media  creations.  Tierney  is  based  in  Santa  Barbara.

 Vallance  received  his  B.F.A.  from  California  State  University,  Northridge  and  his  M.F.A.  from  the  Otis  Art  Institute  in  Los  Angeles,  CA.  His  artistic  practice  includes  drawing,  sculpture,  installations,  and  performance-­‐based  works.  Vallance  draws  heavily  upon  his  childhood  memories  growing  up  in  California,  as  well  as  his  travels  to  Polynesia,  Iceland,  and  the  Vatican.  His  at  has  been  described  as  anthological  in  its  method,  and  it  often  confronts  viewers  with  issues  surrounding  religion  and  faith,  myth,  ritual,  and  pop  culture.  Vallance  has  also  taught  at  several  University  of  California  colleges  and  art  schools,  as  well  as  abroad  at  the  University  of  Tasmania.  He  currently  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles.

Walsh  grew  up  exploring  the  arts  from  a  young  age.  She  become  passionate  for  watercolor  and  printmaking,  and  then  melded  these  two  passions  making  water-­‐based  monotypes.  Walsh’s  art  is  heavily  influenced  by  nature,  and  her  process  is  just  as  important  as  the  product.  She  studied  printmaking  under  Siu  Zimmerman  and  Joan  Gunther.  Walsh  is  also  actively  involved  in  the  Santa  Barbara  and  Goleta  Art  Associations.  She  is  currently  earning  a  degree  in  art  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.

 Wax  is  internationally  recognized  as  a  modern  printmaking  master  using  an  old  master  technique  –  the  mezzotint.  Wax  lectures  frequently  and  is  a  visiting  professor  at  the  Rhode  Island  School  of  Design.  She  is  the  author  of  The  Mezzotint:  History  and  Technique  and  her  essays  have  appeared  in  international  catalogs  and  journals.  Her  mezzotints  are  in  numerous  publications  and  public  collections  including  the  Metropolitan  Museum  of  Art,  the  Philadelphia  Museum  of  Art,  and  the  National  Museum  of  American  Art.

 Born  and  raised  in  Portland,  OR,  Westerman  attended  Reed  College  and  the  University  of  Oregon.  He  attended  art  workshops  with  well-­‐known  artists  such  as  George  Hamilton,  Charles  Reid,  William  Reese,  and  Sergei  Bongardt.  He  has  exhibited  widely  and  won  several  awards  for  his  art.  Westerman  is  active  in  the  American  Watercolor  Society,  the  National  Watercolor  Society,  and  the  Northwest  Watercolor  Society.

extensive  background  as  a  science  and  horticulture  teacher  and  a  cell  biology  researcher,  her  paintings  are  clearly  related  to  the  beautiful  intricacies  of  the  nature  she  encounters.  White  states  her  work  is  also  greatly  inspired  by  Impressionism.  She  is  involved  with  the  Goleta  Valley  and  Santa  Barbara  Art  Associations.  Currently,  she  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.

 White  is  a  Santa  Barbara-­‐based  photographer  and  portrait  painter  who  enjoys  capturing  the  special  moments  people  share  in  life.  In  her  mission  statement,  she  explains  her  desire  to  “portray  the  essence  of  the  individual,”  and    “share  the  beauty  of  an  environment,”  as  well  as  to,  “reveal  the  affection”  of  her  sitters.

 A  self-­‐taught  artist  from  Los  Angeles,  Wiesblottʼs  work  reflects  the  different  stages  of  consciousness  we  have  in  dreams.  She  studied  studio  art  in  London  and  Paris,  and  traveled  around  the  world  photographing  her  journeys.  Wiesblott  graduated  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  with  a  degree  in  Art  History.  Traveling  and  encountering  different  cultures  has  inspired  Wíesblott  to  continue  to  share  the  peoples’  stories  from  around  the  world.  She  is  principally  a  printmaker  and  a  member  of  the  Los  Angeles  Printmakers  Society,  and  she  is  also  an  active  photographer.  Wiesblott  currently  lives  in  Ventura,  CA.

 Wilson  has  a  passion  for  art  and  especially  for  photography.  Her  work  is  housed  in  numerous  collections  such  as  the  Santa  Barbara  Museum  of  Art.  Wilson  teaches  photographic  workshops  and  she  has  served  as  a  faculty  member  at  the  Brooks  Institute.  Her  art  explores  the  realms  of  the  myth  and  reality.  Currently,  she  lectures  and  serves  as  an  adjunct  for  the  Beyond  Portraiture  class  at  the  Brooks  Institute  in  Santa  Barbara.

 Wilson  was  born  in  Indianapolis,  IN,  and  later  moved  to  the  West  Coast  to  earn  her  B.A.  in  painting  and  lithography  from  San  Francisco  State  University.  She  then  earned  her  M.F.A.  in  painting  from  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.  Wilsonʼs  paintings  and  prints  portray  the  menial  objects  and  materials  found  in  life,  and  she  highlights  the  small  nuances  of  beauty  found  in  nature.

 Sister  Wolkerstorfer  is  part  of  the  Sisters  of  Charity  of  the  Blessed  Virgin  Mary.  She  is  Dean  of  the  Mission  and  a  counselor  for  high  school  students  at  Bishop  Garcia  High  School  in  Santa  Barbara.  She  enjoys  photography  as  her  artistic  expression.

Woodburn  studied  textiles,  graphics,  and  costume  design  at  the  University  of  California,  Davis;  and  yuzen,  a  kimono  dyeing  process,  in  Tokyo,  Japan.  She  started  a  textile  design  business  in  the  San  Francisco  Bay  Area  and  later  relocated  her  work  to  Santa  Fe,  NM.  She  has  taught  students  in  Santa  Fe  and  Santa  Barbara,  CA.  In  2006,  Woodburn  turned  her  focus  to  printmaking,  and  is  a  full-­‐time  woodcut  printmaker.

 William  “Billy”  Woolway  was  born  and  raised  in  Chicago,  and  worked  as  a  creative  director  in  advertising  for  many  years  before  pursuing  painting  more  seriously.  In  1979,  Woolway  moved  to  Santa  Barbara,  CA  and  has  since  developed  a  charming  and  rustic  style  using  acrylic  paint  on  metal,  wood,  and  canvas.  Farmland  and  domestic  scenes  figure  prominently  in  his  work,  and  he  also  often  incorporates  found  objects  into  his  paintings  such  as  scrap  metal  and  old  bottle  caps.  Woolway  continues  to  live  and  work  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.

 Born  in  London,  England,  Worsley  moved  to  the  U.S.  after  receiving  his  B.A.  in  Mathematics  and  Physics  from  the  University  of  London.  He  moved  to  the  southern  coast  of  California  where  he  took  up  painting,  and  there  he  educated  himself  through  workshops  in  various  media.  Worsley’s  work  reflects  the  interests  of  social  realism  –  his  colorful  paintings  have  a  narrative  or  tell  a  “story”  about  human  interactions.  Currently,  he  lives  and  paints  in  Santa  Barbara,  CA.

 Wurster  is  a  native  of  western  Montana,  but  relocated  to  the  Oregon  coast.  She  and  her  husband  are  activists  in  wildlife  refuges.  Although  she  has  no  formal  training  in  art,  Wurster  is  a  naturally  talented  painter  who  has  turned  her  artistic  eye  to  wildlife  subjects  and  pristine  landscapes.  She  works  in  acrylic,  pastel,  watercolor,  ink  and  graphite.

 Yost  graduated  from  Westmont  College  with  a  major  in  studio  art.  She  currently  lives  and  works  in  Pasadena,  CA  doing  freelance  commercial  and  digital  art,  in  addition  to  practicing  traditional  fine  art  techniques.  She  is  best  known  as  a  painter.

 Born  and  raised  in  Texas,  Dan  Young  previously  pursued  careers  in  electronics  and  computer  repair  before  becoming  a  full-­‐time  artist.  He  has  now  been  an  artist  for  over  27  years,  and  is  an  accomplished  plein  air  painter  who  specializes  in  landscapes  captured  in  a  loose,  impressionistic  style.  Based  in  Los  Angeles,  Young  is  most  interested  in  the  light  patterns  of  the  sunrises  and  sunsets  of  Southern  California,  Hawaii,  and  the  Southwest.  He  is  enthralled  with  the  effect  of  reflected  sunlight  on  water,  mountains,  and  foliage.  As  an  active  member  of  his  local  art  community,  Young  is  a  dedicated  member  of  the  Laguna  Plein  Air  Painters  Association,  Plein  Air  Painters  of  Hawaii,  and  the  Southern  California  Plein  Air  Painters.

 Zaleski  grew  up  in  Chicago,  Illinois  and  received  his  B.F.A.  from  the  University  of  Illinois,  and  his  M.F.A.  from  the  University  of  Southern  California.  Among  Zaleski’s  interests  are  notions  of  rural  craft  and  farming  landscapes.  His  striking  monoprints,  paintings,  and  sculptures  explore  California’s  natural  landscapes  in  a  decidedly  geometric  and  grid-­‐like  manner.  Zaleski  continues  to  investigate  and  work  through  artistic  processes  in  his  studio  on  California’s  Central  Coast.

 Zarcone’s  art  explores  the  creation  of  meaning  in  art  and  personal  identity.  Living  and  working  in  Los  Angeles,  Zarcone  has  a  M.F.A.  degree  from  the  Art  Center  College  of  Design  in  Pasadena,  CA.  He  currently  teaches  painting,  design,  and  drawing  at  Glendale  Community  College,  Los  Angeles  Mission  College,  and  Santa  Monica  College.  Zarcone  has  exhibited  in  Los  Angeles,  Santa  Monica,  Las  Vegas,  and  Brooklyn,  NY.

 Zellen  lives  and  works  in  Los  Angeles,  and  she  received  her  M.F.A.  from  the  California  Institute  of  the  Arts.  Zellen  is  most  interested  in  the  nature  of  urban  environments,  and  she  works  in  many  media  to  explore  the  issues  and  structures  surrounding  this  subject  matter.

 Zimmer  is  a  self-­‐taught  artist  who  is  inspired  by  historical  events  that  have  marked  her  life.  Her  mother  was  a  Holocuast  survivor,  and  Zimmer  worked  to  tell  her  mother’s  stories  through  art.  In  2007,  she  was  invited  to  exhibit  her  works  at  the  Prague  Jewish  Museum  and  the  Terezin  Ghetto  Museum  in  the  Czech  Republic.  Zimmer  works  in  many  media,  but  is  best  known  for  her  monotypes  on  chine  colle.

 Zimmerman  is  a  sociologist  who  studied  at  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles  receiving  his  B.A.,  M.A.  and  Ph.D.  degrees.  He  currently  is  Professor  Emeritus  of  Sociology  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara  where  he  taught  for  four  decades.  Zimmerman  has  pursued  his  interest  in  studio  art  through  workshops  and  classes  at  Santa  Barbara  City  College  and  Westmont  College,  and  he  exhibits  often  in  Southern  California.

 Zimmerman  graduated  from  the  University  of  California,  Los  Angeles  with  a  degree  in  Public  Health.  Later  she  studied  printmaking  with  Tony  Askew  in  Santa  Barbara,  who  claims  she  was  among  his  best  students.  She  taught  printmaking  and  watercolor  at  Westmont  College  and  currently  teaches  art  at  Santa  Barbara  City  College  Adult  Education.

Zorthian  studied  at  the  San  Francisco  Art  Institute;  Chouinard,  Los  Angeles,  CA;  and  the  California  Institute  of  the  Arts,  Los  Angeles.  She  also  studied  shodou  (Japanese  brush  writing,  or  Japanese  calligraphy)  with  Shiryu  Morita  in  Kyoto,  Japan.  Zorthian  has  exhibited  widely  on  the  West  Coast  and  beyond.

 Zuzalek  has  always  been  enamored  with  art  since  she  was  a  child.  Zuzalek  earned  her  B.F.A.  at  the  Art  Center  of  Design  in  Pasadena,  CA.  She  has  exhibited  her  work  in  California  and  is  represented  in  many  private  collections.  Zuzalek  is  most  interested  in  exploring  the  visual  relationships  between  objects  and  shapes  in  abstract  compositions.  Her  historical  influences  come  from  Diebenkorn,  Van  Gogh,  Picasso,  Hopper,  and  Morandi.  Currently,  Zuzalek  is  affiliated  with  Southern  California  Artists  Painting  for  the  Environmentß,  the  Santa  Barbara  Art  Association,  and  the  Abstract  Artists  Group.  

 416 Pamela  Zwehl-­‐Burke

 Zwehl-­‐Burke  is  a  native  of  Milwaukee,  WI,  but  currently  lives  and  works  in  Santa  Barbara.  She  works  in  a  variety  of  media  including  painting  and  printmaking,  but  is  perhaps  best  known  as  a  book  artist.  Zwehl-­‐Burke  has  taught  art  at  Santa  Barbara  City  College.      

417 Christo  Yellow  Umbrellas  (The  Umbrellas  Project)  Offset  Lithograph  &  Graphite  

 Christo  is  the  name  credited  for  works  by  the  artist  couple  Christo  Vladimirov  Javacheff  and  his  wife  Jeane-­‐Claude.  Their  large-­‐scale,  temporary  environmental  works  are  well  known  and  include  Wrapped  Reichstag  in  Berlin,  Running  Fence  in  Sonoma,  CA,  and  The  Gates  in  New  York  Cityʼs  Central  Park.  The  Umbrellas  project  of  1991  was  located  in  Tejon  Pass,  CA.  Christo  signed  this  commemorative  printed  piece  in  honor  of  that  project.
