Futures Language Schools 5th Primary Booklet 2nd Term12

Conditional sentences usually consist of two clauses: a conditional clause

( if clause ) and a main clause ( result clause ). The result in the main clause is dependent

on the condition in the conditional clause.

General Points

We usually form conditional sentences in one of these basic structures:

If Clause main clause

If I have some money, I will buy a car.

Main clause if clause

I will buy a car If I have some money

If we put the if clause first, we usually separate the clauses by a comma.

There are four basic conditional sentence patterns where our choice of tenses depends

on the time of the condition ( past, present or future ) and how possible or impossible

we think the event is:

Page 13: 5th Primary - Futures Educational Systemssems.futuresnet.net/content/primary5/english/English 5th Primary Booklet ( 2 ) 2nd Term...ð§We can use model verbs in either clauses, especially

Date : ………………………………… C.W . – H.W.

Futures Language Schools 5th Primary Booklet 2nd Term13

This is also known as the general conditional.

IF + Present Simple Present Simple

If you don’t look after the plants, they die very quickly.

We can use model verbs in either clauses, especially can and may.

o If you can read this, you’re too close

We use the zero conditional to talk about events or situations that can occur at

any time.

o If you heat water, it boils.

We also use it to talk about actions that always have the same results.

o If you use a very hot iron on nylon, it melts.

o If you click here, the game starts.

This is also known as the possible or likely conditional.

IF + Present Simple Future Simple

If the museum charges for entry, a lot of people won’t be able to visit it.

We use the first conditional to describe possible future events or situations and their

results:

o If you go to the party, you’ll meet Alan.

o Ben will buy a new shirt if his shirt isn’t clean.

We can use unless instead of if … ( not, don't, doesn't ) in a conditionalclause. Then the verb after unless is always in the affirmative.

If you don’t study, you will fail the test.Unless you study, you will fail the test.I’ll go to school tomorrow if I am not sick.I’ll go to school tomorrow unless I’m sick.I won’t go to the party if she doesn’t come.I won’t go to the party unless she comes.

We usually use ‘unless’ toexpress a negative condition. It is similar to ‘if not’.

We won’t go shopping unlessyou finish your homework.

Futures Language Schools 5th Primary Booklet 2nd Term33

If we report what another person has said, we usually do not use the speaker’s exactwords (direct speech), but reported (indirect) speech. Therefore, you need to learn how totransform direct speech into reported speech. The structure is a little different dependingon whether you want to transform a statement, question or request.

Statements

When transforming statements, check whether you have to change:

pronouns present tense verbs (3rd person singular) place and time expressions

tenses (backshift)

Pronouns

In reported speech, you often have to change the pronoun depending on who says what.

ExampleShe says, “My mum doesn’t have time today.” – She says that her mum doesn’thave time today.

Tenses

No backshift

Do not change the tense if the introductory clause is in Simple Present (e. g. He says).Note, however, that you might have to change the form of the present tense verb (3rdperson singular).

ExampleHe says, “I speak English.” – He says that he speaks English.

Type Example

direct speech “I speak English.”

reported speech(no backshift)

He says that he speaks English.

reported speech(backshift)

He said that he spoke English.

Page 34: 5th Primary - Futures Educational Systemssems.futuresnet.net/content/primary5/english/English 5th Primary Booklet ( 2 ) 2nd Term...ð§We can use model verbs in either clauses, especially

Date : ………………………………… C.W . – H.W.

Futures Language Schools 5th Primary Booklet 2nd Term34

Backshift

You must change the tense if the introductory clause is in Simple Past (e. g. He said). This is called backshift.

ExampleHe said, “I am happy.”He said (that ) he was happy.

Ann said, "Meg is getting married,"Ann said ( that ) Meg was getting married.

Note: ( said to → told )

Ann said to the teacher, " Mary is absent."

Ann told the teacher ( that ) Mary was absent.

N.B: If you have two sentences joined by a comma so when you change into a reported speech you

should remove the comma and put (and / and that / and added that)

For example:

My dad said to me, "I’m tired, I need some rest”

My dad told me that he was tired and he needed some rest.

Direct Speech Reported Speech

Simple Present Simple Past

Present Progressive Past Progressive

Simple Past Past Simple / Past Perfect

Future I (going to) was / were going to

Future I (will) Conditional I (would)

will would

We use the passive voice: When we want to emphasize the actions rather than the person who did it:

o The new DVD shop was opened last week.

When we don’t know who did the action:

Their house was robbed last night.

When it is obvious who did the action:

The thieves have all been arrested. ( by the police )

Active / Passive Verb Forms

Sentences can be active or passive. Therefore, tenses also have "active forms" and "passiveforms." You must learn to recognize the difference to successfully speak English.

Active Form

In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the thingreceiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active.

[Thing doing action] + [verb] + [thing receiving action]

Examples:

Passive Form

In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and the thingdoing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence. You can use the passiveform if you think that the thing receiving the action is more important or should be emphasized. You can also use the passive form if you do not know who is doing the action or if you do notwant to mention who is doing the action.

[Thing receiving action] + [be] + [past participle of verb] + [by] + [thing doing action]

Examples:

Active / Passive Overview

Once a week, the house is cleaned byTom.

Simple Past Sam repaired the car. The car was repaired by Sam.

Simple FutureWILL

The work will be finished by 5:00 PM.

We change a sentence from the active voice to the passive voice in the following way.

The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.

We use verb ( to be ) in the same tense as the verb in the active sentence.

We use the past participle of the main verb in the active sentence.

We use by if we want to mention the doer of the action in the passive sentence.

All the adverbs of time or place or any additional information come at the end of the

sentence.

Some pronouns are changed:

He ate the apples. The apples were eaten by him

She found the keys. The keys were found by her.

I baked a cake. A cake was baked by me.

They teach English. English is taught by them.

We make tea. Tea is made by us.

John and Paul lived in a nice house at the seaside. It was a great place to live,

especially if the weather was nice. Sometimes they sat in Paul's bedroom and looked out

of the window. If the weather was good they could see all sorts of things - the lighthouse

across the bay, children who were running around on the beach, who were swimming in

the sea or who were building sand castles. If they were lucky they could also see lots of

different ships.

One day they were sitting on Paul's sofa and were looking out of the window, when

suddenly they heard a terrible noise. They looked up into the sky and saw an aeroplane ,

which was burning. Then they saw how it crashed straight into the sea. A few seconds

later they also saw the pilot. Fortunately, he was coming down with his parachute.

The boys ran to the telephone and called for help. A few minutes later they saw a

helicopter, which was flying around and was looking for the pilot. Luckily, they found him

and pulled him out of the water with their special equipment.

for saving his life.
