speed• how far object moves during certain amount of time

Page 5: 5th Grade-Ch. 13 lesson 1 how can you describe motion
Page 6: 5th Grade-Ch. 13 lesson 1 how can you describe motion

average speed = distance time

Page 7: 5th Grade-Ch. 13 lesson 1 how can you describe motion

• The fastest land animal, the cheetah, can run 70 miles in 1 hour. – speed= 70= 70 mph 1

No Speed Limit: Introducing the Cheetah [01:09]

Page 9: 5th Grade-Ch. 13 lesson 1 how can you describe motion

Calculate the speed.

• A sloth climbing 10 feet in 2 minutes

• 10 = 5 ft/min5 ft/min 2

motion•measured in relationship to point of reference

Page 11: 5th Grade-Ch. 13 lesson 1 how can you describe motion

The passenger can use a tree as a reference point to decide if the

train is moving.

A tree makes a good reference point because it

is stationary from the passenger’s point of view.

Balloon Powered Race CarsMaterials:

• standard 9 inch balloon• pen barrel or straw • various materials to construct the racers

Rules:• The car must be powered by no more than 2 balloons. The balloons may only be blown up

using lung power by the car operator. No other gases, such as helium, may be used. • You can build the car out of anything, except a toy car or toy car parts. • It must have at least three wheels. Wheels are defined as anything that is round and goes

around. • The wheels can not be wheels from a toy car. They must be made out of something that was

not originally meant to be used as wheels. • The car may not leave the ground. • The car must be capable of traveling at least 5 meters. • Your car, with the completed entry form, is due on Tuessday, June 2.

Procedure:• You will use materials from home and assemble your car at home.   • On race day we will set up a track in our classroom.  • You will race in pairs against other classmates.  • Cars that follow all of the rules will be eligible for awards.   • These awards will be given in three categories. 1. Best Looking Car

2. Fastest Car (in first 5 meters) 3. Farthest Distance Traveled

Good Luck!
