The Pool By Andrew Fusek Peters

We wade through corn like tigers on fire,

And run the obstacle course of barbed wire,

To follow the stream in a winding dream,

Until in a corner, scooped like ice cream,

Under the alders, a hidden pool,

I trail my fingers in the willowy cool.

The grass is bullied and nettles beaten,

Blankets laid for food to be eaten

We leap like salmon one, two, three,

Dive bombers of this inland sea,

Hit the water, bodies froze,

Suddenly trout are tickling toes,

The oak is a mast in the ship of shade

Cows drift through the glassy glade

Heads bent like old men reading the news,

As beyond, the hills hold distant views

Under the beaming fat lady sun,

Witch of warmth, conjuring fun,

Until she grows tired and a little bit low,

And daylight packs up, ready to go!

Oh why can’t summer last forever,

And why can’t we take home this river?

In twilight we stumble through itchy corn,

Get caught on barbed wire with trousers torn,

Sleepily falling into cars,

To carry us home under rippling stars.
