Charleen McCarley Tipps, 71, passed away at her home in Oracle on April 28, 2013. She was born in Oceanside, CA, on Aug. 8, 1941 and lived for many years in the San Jose area, before moving to Oracle, about eight years ago. She attended Oceanside schools and graduated from Oceanside High in the Class of 1959. She worked for many years in the Silicon Valley area and enjoyed horseback riding with the Los Viajeros Club in the Almaden Valley area, the Santa Clara Horseman’s Association, and loved fishing and camping. After moving to Oracle, she became very active in volunteering at the Oracle Community Center and the Annual Oaks Festival, as well as the Oracle Fire Dept., where she was an active member of the Oracle Firewise Board and a trained CERT. She is survived by sons, Ray McCarley of San Jose,

Frank (Kiko) Gonzales, 86, of Mammoth, passed away on May 5, 2013 in Tucson, AZ. He was born on Jan. 29, 1927 in Hayden, AZ. Kiko was a WWII veteran and retired from Kennecott after 39 years of service. Kiko was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and his memory will remain in our hearts forever. A young mother is dead after being injured in a domestic violence assault while her husband remains in jail, charged with her murder. According to Chief S. G. Gillen of the Hayden Police Department, on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at approximately 6 p.m. Hayden Police and medical personnel were called to the scene of an assault in the 500 block of Fifth St., Hayden. Both victims, Vanessa Ortega and Eric Gonzales, were taken by helicopter to University Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The suspect in the attack was identified as

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers received an emergency call just before 9 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had rolled in the area of E. Highway 77 and S. Willow Springs Rd., just south of

Oracle. The driver, it was reported, had a possible compound fracture of the upper leg and several broken ribs. Deputies identified the driver as the suspect in the Hayden assault case, secured Ortega in an ambulance and cleared the scene, said PCSO Public Information Officer Tamra Ingersoll. Gillen said that Ortega was

transported to University Medical Center for further medical treatment. HPD officers, he said, arrived at the hospital and arrested Ortega and charged him with aggravated assault and domestic violence. Ortega was then transported and booked into the Pima County Sheriff’s Detention facility. “Vanessa Ortega did not

survive her injuries,” Gillen said, “and passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Eric Gonzales is currently recovering from his injuries.” Guillermo Ortega was transported from the Pima County Jail on Thursday, May 2, and was booked into the Gila County Jail. He has been charged with second degree murder, aggravated

assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. He is being held at the Globe jail on $250,000 bond. “(The) Hayden Police Department wishes to thank the members of the community who responded to the scene at San Pedro and Fifth St. Sunday evening and rendered first aid,” said Gillen.

Dear Editor: These are the complaints against the Public Works Director, that Mammoth Town Council would not address in an open meeting. This letter was originally dated March 19, 2013. Mammoth Town Council: Let this serve as my formal complaint against the Mammoth Public Works Director David Garcia. Mr. Joe Casillas called my home complaining

about his water. He said he could not get an answer from Town Hall. I grabbed a jar and went to his house. Mr. Casillas was waiting outside with a plastic container full of what looked like water from a radiator. I drew another sample of water into a clean jar and left for Town Hall. The front door to the Town Hall was locked, so I entered through the police station. The Town Manager was having a meeting of some

sort and could not get to the phone when Mr. Casillas had called. I showed the water sample to the Manager and she called Mr. Garcia on his phone. He met me at the Town Hall, and when Mr. Garcia saw the sample he stated that the water did not come from a Mammoth tap. On arriving at Mr. Casillas house, again, Joe was waiting outside with another sample. David told Joe that his sample

did not come from his house. David drew a sample and said that it does have something in it. I suggested that the fire hydrant be flushed since it was so close. David called a crew and they opened the fire hydrant. The water came out dirty and then cleared up, so they shut off the fire hydrant before it washed out the neighbor’s yard. The water in Joe’s house came clean, so, everyone left. Soon after I arrived home, Joe called again. Mr. Garcia told Joe, again, that the water sample he has in his hand is not from his tap. David keeps asking me, all the while, “Why is he calling you for?” and I

keep telling him “I am a councilman and he cannot get through to Town Hall.” Mr. David Garcia called me a liar, repeatedly, and he called Mr. Casillas a liar, repeatedly. Mr. Garcia still to this day has not given me or Mr. Casillas the results of the sample I took, which he was supposed to analyze. I suggest that Mr. Garcia’s position with the Town of Mammoth be suspended, without pay, until this can be investigated. On completion of the investigation, he should be terminated. /s/ Joseph S. By Elaine HelzerSpecial to the Miner O.W.N., Oracle Women’s Network, is once again sponsoring a Music Scholarship. All schools are invited to participate by having students apply using the Scholarship application and questionnaire. The group will be accepting

applications through the rest of the school year and the first semester of the fall. Lessons will begin in January 2014 and will last one year. The scholarships will be reviewed with an initial call to the parents or guardians and will be then submitted to the O.W.N. Board for review and recipients will be contacted.

Music Lessons have been proven scientifically to produce higher I.Q. scores, better retention, improved reading and math scores, self discipline, improved coordination and Self Confidence. Dyslexia is improved , sometimes dramatically. The list goes on, and since music and art

are being removed from so many schools having private lessons are being sought after with increasing frequency. Any donations toward this scholarship should be taken to Sue and Jerry’s Trading Post in Oracle. All donations no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. Families with used Electric Pianos

Oracle Women’s Network to offer music scholarshiphave donated to the cause. If you have one hiding in your closet please consider donating it. An electric keyboard, music and lessons will be awarded to the scholarship recipient or recipients for one year. The Oracle Community Center will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner to help fund the scholarship. This will be held on May 17 at 6 p.m. Cost will be $12 per meal, $5 under 12. By Frank Smith The San Manuel High School Miner Baseball team has done it again earning a spot in the Division IV State Semi-Finals for the second year in a row! The headlines would not be so eye catching for a baseball program that is used to hanging out in the top five or so of the state power rankings throughout the sea-son, year after year – time after time but what makes a great story line for the Miners Baseball program lately is the fact they start near the bottom and end up near the top. For example, the team that reached the State Champion-ship game in 2009 against the eventual Champions Pusch Ridge came into the state tournament ranked #19, in 2012 the Miners were ranked #22 upsetting the higher seeds on their way to the semi-finals losing to eventual Champions St. David, and this year the Miners entered the playoffs ranked #22 and thus far have upset #15 Mogollon, #2 St. Johns, and #7 Pusch Ridge to reach the semi-finals in dra-matic fashion. San Manuel has earned the reputation of getting into the state tournament no matter what seed - they turn into a totally different team that has not showed itself during the regular season, a very danger-ous team that you cannot take lightly because you as the opponent will end up shaking hands at the end of the game and preparing for next season instead of the next round. On April 30, the Miners faced off against #15 seed Mogollon at the Goodyear Baseball Complex in Good-year and won 18 – 1. On May 3, at the Goodyear Baseball Complex, the Miners took on the #2 St. Johns and shocked the Redskins 6 – 5. At the Goodyear Baseball

Complex, on May 4, San Manuel faced their region foe and nemesis in the # 7 ranked Pusch Ridge Lions. The Min-ers had not beaten the Lions in a varsity baseball game as far as memory can serve. San Manuel lost to the Lions during the regular season on April 16 at Pusch Ridge 13 – 3 and lost again 11 - 2 at home on April 23. But the third time was a charm as the Miners came from behind in extra innings to win 4 – 3 to advance to the next round of the 2013 playoffs … the semi – finals. The Lions scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning while the Miners scored two runs in the six inning, one run in the seventh inning, and one run in the eighth inning. Pusch Ridge scored three runs off three hits and com-mitted no errors; San Manuel scored four runs on nine hits and committed two errors. “It was a great baseball game overall for both teams. Anthony (Garcia) pitched really well after the first in-ning when he gave up three runs with two of them earned. After that he pitched a gem of a game striking out 10 batters, and giving up three hits while walking six batters in eight innings,” Head Coach Steve Elmore said. “We did not hit the best early as their pitcher shut us down. We started to get a couple hits off him in the fourth inning and fifth innings but no runs scored.” “I was very proud of the guys in this game,” Elmore said. “They never gave up against a team that beat them by a combined 18 runs in the regular season. We had some many close games during the season that did not go our way, but I stressed that these games would pay off eventu-ally and it did at a really big

It has been a while since the Lady Miners have been down this road and they will look to stay on course to the Championship. With the #2 seed in the State Tournament, the Lady Miners had a first round bye and awaited the winner between #15 St. David and #18 Antelope Union with St. David

taking the win 16 – 5 to move on to the next round against the Lady Miners. On May 3, San Manuel faced off against the Lady Tigers from St. David at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix taking the 11 – 1 win to advance to the next round. “We knew St. David had some hitters in the top of the line-up, so we did our best to throw around them. Waddell came out strong sitting them down in the first inning with three strike outs. Only in two other innings did St. David threaten to score,”

said Head Coach Deanne Brewer. With the win, the Lady Miners would match up against region foe the #7 Lady Lobos from Hayden on May 4 at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix. San Manuel had played Hayden three times throughout the season with the Lady Miners winning two out of three – on March 12 in Hayden, San Manuel sneaked by the Lady Lobos 8 – 7; on March 22 in San Manuel – Hayden got the best of the Lady Miners as San

Manuel lost 11 – 1; and on March 30 in Hayden – San Manuel returned the favor beating the Lady Lobos 7 – 4 in the Hayden Invitational. So the match up was set for an interesting game with the Lady Miners winning the game 11 – 7. Coach Brewer said, “Sometimes, teams just get on your pitcher and in the state playoffs, you can’t afford to let a pitcher try to dig themselves out. I tell my teams all the time that state games aren’t typically won by the 10-run rule.”

There were 12 teams taking part in the annual competition. By Alex Gort There is a jewel in San Man-uel. It is a beautiful light blue and it is so large that it can be seen easily from the sky. It adds great value to our com-munity, and while everyone knows where it is, not every-one recognizes it as the jewel that it is. The jewel is the San Manuel Swimming Pool. The San Manuel Pool has given great things to the com-munity. Many in the area have learned how to swim in its waters. It has provided great relief on hot summer days. The pool gave a place for the Sea Lions Swim Team to form in 2004. The summer compet-itive team quickly grew to one of the largest programs in the Central Arizona Swimming League teaching children the proper way to swim competi-tive strokes and get the youth of our community to exercise while learning a lifetime skill. The pool provided the place for children to take time away from video games and get the needed exercise so many chil-dren do not get enough of. In 2007, the quality and level

of participation in swimming activities was enough to earn the Sea Lions the title of Central Arizona Swimming League Champions a title that has been won every year since. As any jewel has minor flaws, so does our pool. The tile may be cracked in a few places, the water may be a little cold, and the change rooms may not be as beautiful as the new ones in larger communities, but a little bit of character makes this jewel even more of a treasure. Community volunteers can be seen working together to im-prove the pool. Whether it is the local boy scout troop helping to clean the pool, the volunteers with various construction experi-ence spending time installing piping to provide solar heating (a project that adds capacity every year as materials and la-bor are donated), or volunteers to run a swim team and host swim meets, the community is working together which is a treasure that we should all cherish. Our pool is large enough that there is room for everyone

The Jewel of San Manuel – the poolwhether it is on a swim team, during public swim, a private party or a community event. Many use the pool to condi-tion for other sports while others use the pool to exercise regularly to keep healthy. Groups are brought together to celebrate at the pool whether it is the completion of a youth baseball season or someone just getting a year older. Boy Scouts and Lifeguards have been seeing working on their lifesaving skills, skills that will surely save a life someday. The scouts have learned canoeing and kayak-ing skills in safety of a pool before accepting greater chal-lenges. Water polo has been played at the pool on a regular basis and there is enough interest to form a competitive team. In 2010, swimmers that our pool help to shape over the years began showing up on the Arizona stage as some of the best (including a State Cham-pion). It is probably no coin-cidence that swimming was added as a high school sport at San Manuel High School (SMHS) that year. Even though SMHS is one of the smaller high schools to have a swim team, Miner swimmers finished the 2012 season with

9-3 dual meet record (9-2 for the Girls). As the swimming ability of the community improved, it was just a matter of time before a USA Swimming team called the San Manuel Pool home. There must be something special in the pool, because swimmers from San Manuel are regularly among the best at Arizona Regional and Championship Meets. As USA Swimming began to learn more about the San Manuel Pool, they too real-ized what a gem we have. USA Swimming sanctioned a swim meet in the San Manuel Pool scheduled to take place in August. It turns out the San Manuel pool is a rare mix of a 50 meter pool in Arizona with a water temperature is not too hot to hold a competition in August. People from around the state are finding out about our jew-el. There have been inquires about holding camp like train-ing sessions in San Manuel to practice in cooler water during the summer. Hats off to those who have had the vision to keep the pool operating during tight budgets and all those who worked so hard to protect and improve the San Manuel Pool.

There are volunteer health care professionals, fi remen, coaches for youth sports, tutors, teachers, food bank workers, grant writers and more. Just about every job skill available out in the community can be used by volunteer groups and organizations in our communities. The San Manuel Miner will be starting a new regular feature that hopes to connect non-profi t organizations, churches, schools and events with volunteers. What we are looking for from your organization is the following information:

San Manuel, AZ – Over the Top RC Track, one of the largest RC tracks open to the public, has reopened. The track is open to all, with a focus on children 5-15 years of age. Members are being sought to help with maintenance. Registration forms are available for pick up at the track during swim practice or you can request a PDF file by emailing [email protected]. Child Members

must be between 5-15 years of age. They will receive free use of the loaner cars, but, must provide their own battery or rent one for $3 per pack. Adults may register, but, must volunteer time to help with the track. Member benefits include free practice Monday though Friday during swim practice from 4 to 6 p.m. and most weekends, discounted race fees, free one-on-one challenge races

and 50 percent off AKA tires for bulk orders. Other discounts may be available for members in the future. In addition, members may attend workshops on shock building, suspension tuning, painting, complete car rebuild and more. Workshops will be held Sat. evenings after racing. The track is looking forward to the installation of a timing system this year. The schematics and

parts list are already in place. Volunteers who are experienced in electronics are sought to help with the build. The Over The Top crew has several cars for sale ranging from $125 - $400.
