Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Metanoia is a Greek word that means conver-sion—a deep, profound change in our lives.

Real contrition means we view our entire lives in light of God’s fidelity toward us and the ongoing call to conversion. We rearrange our priorities, assess our ac-tions, come to terms with regrets, and review our judgments all because we

seek this deep conversion of heart and mind and action.

In keeping with the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, the Fam-ily Assistance Ministry asks that as you fast from meat on Friday that you con-sider donating canned meat, canned tuna and peanut butter on the weekend of February 21 & 22. This provides the much needed protein in the bags of grocer-ies we prepare for the families we feed on Thursdays. The Family Assistance Ministry also thanks you for your continual contribution of money in the “green envelope” (almsgiving) this Lent that sustains our pro-gram. We also ask for your continued prayers for this Ministry, for those who volunteer so many hours, and for our client families.

ANDANDAND RRRECOMMENDATIONSECOMMENDATIONSECOMMENDATIONS In accordance with the provisions of Canon law (cf. Canons 1249-1253) as implemented by the National Con-ference of Catholic Bishops for the United States, the following regula-tions are to be observed by the Cath-olics in the Diocese of Orange in the penitential practices: 1. It is to be noted for all that the

faithful are bound to do penance and, as a specification of this ob-ligation by the Church, some form of abstinence by those 14 years of age and older is to be observed on all Fridays through-out the year.

2. Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. If for some serious reason a person must eat meat on a Friday in Lent, some other form of self-sacrifice should be performed.

3. Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and not yet 60 is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. a. On these two days of fast

only one full meal is al-lowed. Two other meals, suf-ficient to maintain strength may be taken, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals on these days is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

b. Where health or ability to work would be seriously af-fected, the law does not oblige.

PPPRAYERRAYERRAYER FORFORFOR OUROUROUR MMMARRIAGEARRIAGEARRIAGE Heavenly Father, we thank You for your tremendous gift of the Sacra-ment of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more one in heart, mind, and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us become living signs of Your love. Help us to be examples of commitment, love, and service to our families and chil-dren. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of Your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus’ name and walk in His footsteps. Amen.
