St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church 3 Sunday, June 14, 2020
Hello Everyone,
As we continue forward in our gradual reopening, I want to continue to
draw your attention to some things happening around the parish!
A number of people have been asking about the church roof, which has
tarp on it right now and has been leaking when it rains. This most recent
damage was caused by a powerful storm that blew through about a
month ago. We have received three quotes on getting it fixed, as well as
an amount of the cost that will be supplemented by our insurance. Our
hope is to have the church roof (all of the asphalt shingle roof) replaced
within the next few weeks. This will fix the leaking issues. Schafer Hall’s
slate roof will also need to be replaced soon, but not immediately.
Before the COVID-19 shutdown, we had been gearing up for a feasibility study and possible capital campaign to
fix a number of large property issues (the concrete around the church, Schafer Hall’s roof, HVAC issues, etc.) as
well as possibly building a new parish center that would connect the school with the church and address the
serious lack of space that the parish ministries desperately need; however, because of the current situation this
has been placed on hold until at least the fall. There will be more to come on that down the road a few months.
As you might have seen in the email that went out this past week, because a number of people have asked if we
could have our Saturday evening Vigil Mass a little earlier, we are conducting a parish survey to see if more
people would rather have the Vigil at 4:30pm or keep it at 5:30pm. I will be happy to accommodate the people’s
choice on this! You can still vote on the question; the survey is posted on our parish website. We especially ask
those who normally go to the Saturday Vigil Mass to voice their preference.
One of the biggest questions in the air right now concerns the festival. Our current plan is to have the FunFest on
July 23 – 25. We are currently expecting to be able to have the carnival rides, but if that falls through, the festival
will likely only be the evenings of the 24th and 25th. We have been following the dates, directives, and
recommendations of Back on Track Indiana, the State’s plan for reopening. This is the same plan Marion County
is following for the Marion County Fair, which will be on July 4 – 12. Holy Spirit (on the East Side) is also holding
their festival on July 17 – 19. This will give us two examples of how other, larger festivals functioned and
maintained safety during this time. We will also of course follow every directive and recommendation from state
and public health officials to make this outdoor event as safe as possible. There is still always the possibility that
something will change suddenly and we will have to reassess our plans. Stay tuned for more details on FunFest
in the weeks to come.
I want to continue to thank you all for your attention, understanding, and cooperation with us during this time of
reopening. It has been very successful, and I believe it will continue to be so! St. Mark continues to be a vibrant
and successful parish, and we continue to push forward in our mission to grow closer to Christ, and evangelize
our community!
God bless you all!—Fr. Tim

Lord of tenderness and compassion,
We ask you to be with us, your sons and
daughters
During this time of stress and loneliness.
Free us from doubt and despair,
Show us the light of your face.
Be with us now and always.
Embrace us, as you always do, in your loving
care.
Be with all those we love and hold them
Lord in your tender and loving embrace.
We ask this in the name of your precious Son,
Our Lord, brother and redeemer Jesus Christ
and your Holy Spirit. Amen
(Offered by Deacon Paul Fisherkeller)
The Ministry for Maturing Adults (MMA) is planning for
the first public programming since the onset of the
Covid-19 pandemic. We are most fortunate to have
seminarian Michael Clawson from St. Meinrad with us
at St. Mark this summer. Michael will be the lead
presenter at sessions that are planned for three
consecutive Tuesdays in July: July 14th, 21st, and
28th. These early evening sessions will be held in the
air-conditioned Church, and will follow all Covid-19
protocols in place at that time. The plan is to tape these
sessions so that parishioners can also watch them
online.
Topics and more specific details will soon be coming
but please mark your calendars for July 14th, 21st, and
28th.
There are a few MMA Care Packages left. If you are 75
years of age and older, are registered at St. Mark, and
did not receive your packet, contact Steve Helmich
at [email protected] or 317-903-9657 cell/
text).
The BURDEN of the present is that it brings us face to
face with the fleetingness of time.
The BLESSING of the present is that it brings us to
understand the fleetingness of time - to live with the
spirit in full bloom.

A NOTE FROM MICHAEL CLAWSON, SUMMER SEMINARIAN Topic: I can’t wait to receive Communion again: What we can
and should take away from this pandemic and our
relationship and understanding of the Eucharist
I think right now in the midst of confusion, conflict, and the
anticipation of our parishes going back to a more normal
schedule and our own ability to attend the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass, I would like to take time to talk about the Mass, and
what this point in history allows us to focus more clearly on
concerning the Mass and the Eucharist.
I’ve seen on the internet and heard Catholics asking
questions like, If the members of the parish aren’t able to
receive communion then why is our parish priest still
celebrating the Mass, what’s the point of watching the Mass
on the internet, why can’t I receive the Eucharist in a kind of
drive-through from Priest? And there are many other similar
questions in the same vein that all lead back into some
central points that this time in history is allowing us to focus
more on so that we can come to a deeper understanding of
what is taking place at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as well
as what the Mass is not.
If we look back throughout the Old Testament, there
are numerous examples of sacrifices as well as several
covenants being made between God and Man, that are
ratified through the action of a sacrifice. And this is exactly
what we are doing at the Mass, we are continuing to
recognize and reaffirm the covenant that has been
established between Christ and the Father as well as
between the Church, with Christ, to the Father. Through this
understanding of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as an action
between Christ, the Church, and the Father. The Mass is
something more than our weekly obligation and an
opportunity to receive our “spiritual vitamin”, the Mass is
where we willingly come before God because of the love
between us and our covenant we have made together.
“Whenever God made a covenant, He also gave a
program for its renewal. A covenant wasn’t just a past event;
it was ongoing, perpetually present, continually reactualized.
Generations might pass since the covenant at Sinai; but
whenever the children of Israel renewed that covenant,
whenever they marked the Passover, it was as if the covenant
were being made today. The Mass is our perpetual renewal of
the New Covenant. The Mass is a solemn oath you take
before countless witnesses, as in the court of the Book of
Revelation. “And so with all the choirs of angels we sing …”
When heaven touches down upon earth, you receive the
privilege of praying beside the angels. But you also receive
the duty of living up to your prayers....” - Scott Hahn: The
Lamb’s Supper.
And while it’s important to say as much as we can
about what the Mass is, its also important to talk about what
the Mass is not. The Liturgy
of the Mass is not some kind
of magical series of words
and actions which when
completed result in those
who participated
automatically receiving grace
from God. Nor is the
Eucharist some kind of
spiritual vitamin that we take
that makes our souls and our
spiritual life healthier and
allows us to overcome our
sinful nature. Grace builds
upon nature, meaning that
the grace of God does not
magically overpower our wills and human nature, but only
reinforced the good that is already there. This is a key axiom
within the Church that helps all the faithful realize that our
salvation, as well as our participation in the liturgy, is not a
passive encounter, but is one of activity and cooperation. As
Sacrosanctum Concilium paragraph 11 says “But in order that
the liturgy may be able to produce its full effects, it is
necessary that the faithful come to it with proper dispositions,
that their minds should be attuned to their voices, and that
they should cooperate with divine grace lest they receive it in
vain….”, that is to say our minds and hearts must internalize
and hold true the words that we say at Mass. The Mass
cannot be something where we mindlessly respond, but
wherewith all our hearts we call out to God our Father as a
response to the love He has shown to us.
All of this is to say several key points. The Mass is
not only an opportunity to receive the Eucharist, which it is,
but the whole of the Mass is efficacious. We receive grace
from God not only by receiving the Eucharist but by
participating in the whole action of the liturgy does God
bestow His graces upon us. Therefore because the action of
the Mass is constituted by the actions of Christ, the Priest,
and the lay faithful together, we can be confident that despite
our inability at times to receive the Eucharist or to be present
in the Church building, God still bestows His grace upon us.
The Eucharist then is not the only point of focus, nor is the
homily, but each part of the Mass is intended to draw the
person deeper and deeper into the mystery of the Paschal
Sacrifice so that each person become more properly
conformed to God and so become more able to receive the
full amount of grace God desires to give to us.
