Tips on Getting Started

Your heating system provides central heating and domestic hot water heating inconjunction with a domestic hot water tank.

The timer of the control unit switches over between ”normal room temperature”and ”reduced room temperature” at the required times.

1. Normal room temperaturefor the times you spend at home andrequire a comfortably warm roomtemperature (e.g. 68 ºF / 20 ºC).

2. Reduced room temperatureat nighttime or for the times youspend away from home. To saveenergy, a temperature which is lowerthan the ”normal room temperature”is normally selected. In the factory setting, ”frostprotection at 37 ºF / 3 ºC” isselected.

Times and duration of the two roomtemperatures can be set via theprogramming unit. You can set the required temperaturevalue for both the ”normal room tem-perature” and the ”reduced room tem-perature”.

The timer of the control unit activates and deactivates the domestic hot watersupply at the required times (applicable to boiler with domestic hot water tankonly).

1. Domestic hot water heating takesplacefor the times you spend at home andrequire hot water for your dailyrequirements (e.g. for showering).

2. Domestic hot water heating does nottake placeat nighttime for example.

Times and duration of domestic hot waterheating can be set via the programmingunit.

The domestic hot water temperaturecan be set according to your personalpreference up to 140 ºF / 60 ºC.

The DHW recirculation pump (ifinstalled) ensures instantaneous avail-ability of hot water.

Altering Settings of the Heating System

The heating pattern of your boiler is influenced by the outdoor temperature and thesettings of the ”shift” and ”slope” of the ”heating curve”. You can change thesettings if the room temperature has not met your requirements over a certainperiod of time. After changing the settings, please observe the difference in the heating patternover a sufficiently long period before altering the settings again.Short-term changes in the room temperature are carried out with the ” ” selectorknob or ” ” button (see ”Altering the Room Temperature”).

Heating curves represent the relationship between the outdoor temperature and theboiler water or supply temperature. Put simply: The lower the outdoor temperature, the higher the boiler water or supply temperature.

In the factory default settings, the slope is set to 1.4 and the shift to 0.The heating curves shown are based on the following settings:”Shift of heating curve” = 0With a different shift setting, the curves are shifted parallel in a vertical direction.”Normal room temperature” = approx. 68 ºF / 20 ºC.

The slope of the heating curve isnormally within the range marked

for underfloor heating systems, for modulating heating systems, for heating systems with tempera-

tures over 167 ºF / 75 ºC

ExamplesWell insulated house in protectedlocation (radiator heating):Slope = 1.2House in exposed location or withold heating system (radiator heat-ing):Slope = 1.6

Service Instructions

30

Service Instructions

Servicing is required under current heating system regulations and standards.

Regular servicing of the heating system will ensure troublefree, energy-saving andenvironmentally friendly heating. We strongly advise you to arrange a servicecontract with your heating contractor.

BoilerAll boilers have to be cleaned at certainintervals as the flue gas temperature andtherefore the energy loss rise as thelevel of contamination increases.

We recommend the use of a flue gasthermometer. The flue gas thermometer, which isavailable as an accessory, can be usedto monitor the flue gas temperature. This will show whether the burnersetting is incorrect and will provide anindication of the degree ofcontamination of the boiler.

The efficiency of the system will beimpaired if the flue gas temperature isexcessively high due to contamination ofthe boiler or incorrect adjustment of theburner. In this case it may be necessaryto clean the boiler or readjust the burner.A built-in operating hours countermeasures the operating times of theburner. The longer the operating times, thelower the stand-by losses.

Notes on operation:Keep the boiler room and the boilerclean.Regularly check the pressure of theheating system on the pressuregage.

Domestic hot water tankThe domestic hot water tank must beserviced or cleaned two years afterstart-up at the latest and at regularintervals thereafter.Cleaning of the inside surfaces of thedomestic hot water tank including thedomestic hot water connections mayonly be undertaken by a licensedheating contractor.Vitocell 100:We recommend that a functionalinspection be carried out annually bythe heating contractor to check thesacrificial anode. This can be donewithout interrupting the operation of thesystem. The heating contractormeasures the protective current with ananode testing instrument.

If the cold water supply to the hotwater tank incorporates a watertreatment device (e.g. a sluice orinoculation unit), the filling must berenewed promptly. The same applies if a dirt trap or a filteris installed in the cold water supply. These must be flushed out and servicedregularly.

Safety relief valve (DHW tank)The valve test lever must be operatedat least once a year by the owner. Alicensed heating contractor shallreinspect the safety relief valve at leastonce every 3 years.

There is a risk of dirt collecting at thevalve seat (see valve manufacturer’sinstructions).

Drinking water filter (if installed)For hygienic reasonsreplace the filter element every6 months on filters which cannotbe flushed back (also make a visualinspection every 2 months),flush back reversible supply filtersevery 2 months.

Please refer to the manufacturer’sinstructions.

Saving Energy

.... by heating correctlyApart from using the benefits offered by a modern heating system, there’s a lot youcan do yourself to make additional fuel savings. For instance:

Proper ventilation

Do not overheat

Close window shutters (if installed) atdusk.Operate thermostatic valvescorrectly.Don’t obstruct radiators andthermostatic valves .Make use of the individual adjustmentfacilities of the control unit .

Set the domestic hot watertemperature of the DHW tank onthe control unit .Control your consumption of hotwater.

Fully open the windows for a shorttime with the thermostatic valvesclosed.Aim at a room temperature of 68 ºF /20 ºC. Every ºC less in roomtemperature will reduce your heatingcosts by up to 6 %.

e.g. ”normal room temperature”alternating with ”reduced roomtemperature”

A shower generally consumes lessenergy than a bath.

... by regular maintenanceRegular maintenance of your heating system by a service contractor will ensureenergy-saving and environmentally friendly operation.

.... by effective insulationIf you wish to make use of additional energy-saving measures, check out thethermal insulation:
