The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Two: The Annuncia on, con nued…

The Blessed Virgin Mary had a visit from the Archangel Gabriel to let her know God’s plan. You and I may have a similar visit from an angel, but most of the me, God speaks to us in different ways. His will is made known in a general way through the teachings of the Church and the Bible. His will is made known in a par cular way through the circumstances we find ourselves in.

A historical example of this—a general message from God teaming up with circumstances to give someone an ac on plan—comes from the life of Saint Anthony of the Desert. When he was

about eighteen or twenty years old, his parents died, leaving him with the care of his young sister and the possession of about 200 acres of fer le farmland. Not long a er this, he went to Mass one day and entered the church just as these words of Jesus to the rich man were being read: “If you would be perfect, sell what you possess and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Ma hew 19:21) On his way there he had just been thinking about how the first Chris ans did precisely this, and he came to the conclusion that God was telling him to do the same. Right away he sold the property his parents had le him and gave the money to the poor, leaving just enough to take care of his sister. The next me he went to church he heard the Lord say in the Gospel: “Do not be anxious about tomorrow.” (Ma hew 6:34) Immediately he gave the rest of the money he had to the poor and placed his sister in a convent to be brought up by the women there. He turned to a life of prayer and manual labor, seeking solitude in the desert but eventually a rac ng many followers who were a racted by his holiness and wisdom, which he generously shared for the remaining eighty or so years of his long life.

How might this happen in our own everyday lives? Well, we could get a call to a radical change of life like St. Anthony did. Or it could be something less drama c but just as important. For example, the Church in a general way speaks of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. One of the corporal works of mercy is to feed the hungry. This lines up with the words of Jesus, as recorded, among other places, in Ma hew 25:31-46 (the separa on of the sheep from the goats on judgment day) and Luke 16:19-31 (the rich man and Lazarus the beggar). The message from God to act on this work of mercy in a par cular way could come to us in the circumstance that a cousin of ours has been unemployed for a long me, hasn’t been able to hold down a job because of some deep-seated personality issues, and is having trouble paying his bills. So, we decide to give him a couple of hundred dollars a month to help him meet his living expenses.

Or, maybe we have a boss who has a habit of ac ng uncharitably. Some of our co-workers tell us one day that they plan to make up a lie about her to try to get her fired. We dislike the boss as much as they do, but know that Jesus said, “Love your enemies” (Ma hew 5:44) and, “Whatsoever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.” (Ma hew 7:12) So we tell that to our co-workers, refuse to cooperate in their plan, and tell them that if they go ahead with it, we will come to the boss’s defense and expose their lie for what it is. In response, our co-workers give us a hard me. We are tempted to be afraid that they will spread a lie about us too, but we feel be er when we remember the words of Jesus, “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and u er all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.” (Ma hew 5:11) Encouraged by these words of Jesus, we are able to thank him for this opportunity to love an enemy and witness to God’s love in Jesus Christ with our co-workers, no ma er what might happen to us as a consequence.

The Blessed Virgin Mary said “Yes” to God’s plan and so allowed God’s love to come into the world in a totally new and powerful way, in Jesus Christ. This brought her a lot of suffering in this life, but also incomparably more joy. One of her joys comes in being the Mother of the Church, a mystery which the Church will celebrate liturgically for the first me this year, on the Monday a er Pentecost, May 21st. May the Blessed Virgin Mary’s example and prayers help us and all people to be open to God’s perfect and upli ing plan, however we become aware of it.

With love in Christ, Father Rudolph

Saints Argentea and Wolfram of Córdoba

Argentea was born toward the end of the ninth century to a noble family in the south of Spain, a er it had been almost completely conquered by the Moors, Muslims who had invaded from North Africa. Her father was Omar-ben-Afcoun, a Chris an who lived in a castle called Robesto. Surrounded by the Moors, Omar waged war against them and held their forces in check for almost fi y years. A er he died, his four sons valiantly con nued the fight, but finally had to surrender. Argentea moved to the city of Córdoba, living with her brother Hafs. Then in the year 931 the missionary Wulfram arrived in Córdoba from France, preaching the Chris an religion, no doubt in response to the command of Jesus Christ, who, just before his Ascension into heaven, told his apostles, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all na ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Ma hew 28:18-19) Wulfram and Argenea met; soon a erward he was imprisoned by the Moors for his sharing of the good news of Jesus Christ. Argentea had not previously declared her faith, but now she did so and was imprisoned along with Wulfrum. Both were soon executed. Saints Argentea and Wolfram of Córdoba, pray for us! In February 2018, the Holy Family Catholic Adop on Agency (HFCAA) requested to use office space here at St. Raphael’s parish and were warmly welcomed.

This non-profit, pro-life agency was founded in 2001, following in the footsteps of St. Mother Teresa by offering adop on as the loving answer to abor on. Bishop Cozzens sent a le er to all the Diocesan Pastors recommending support for HFCAA especially because it is presently the only Catholic Adop on Agency located in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. In his le er he wrote: “There is a need to spread the word about this worthy non-profit organiza on, because it could make all the difference for someone facing an unplanned pregnancy, and for their unborn child...This pro-life agency relies solely on private dona ons, so in addi on to reaching those in need, your influence could help provide the necessary funding from donors to expand their ministry even further.” If you have any ques ons, you can contact Execu ve Director, Mary L.
