Eden Garden Club Visits Eden Heights

The Eden Garden Club visited Eden Heights on 5/1/15 to assist the residents in making a traditional May Day Basket. Rural Transit Service Celebrates 25 Years

Rural Transit has become a staple throughout our com-munities providing 10,000-15,000 safe rides per year to the seniors, disabled and low/moderate income residents of Erie County. These individuals have been able to maintain an independent lifestyle through the help of our more than one hundred and thirty plus volunteers! Eligible residents are transported to dialysis clinics, medical offices, physical therapy, pharmacies, colleges, work places, nutrition sites, adult day cares, grocery stores, banks, salons/barbers, ect. Our vehicles operate Monday- Friday 8 am to 4 pm. Al-though contributions are not necessary, a suggested dona-tion of $3 is greatly appreciated to help us to raise funds for new vehicles. Rural Transit has become more like a family, than an “organization.” As volunteers we have developed lifelong friendships with fellow volunteers and clients. Volunteers share holiday celebrations, luncheons, and appreciation picnics. We are an organization that truly cares about the community residents and wants to help. Our wonderful volunteers are here because they want to be and they care about those that they are helping. Eden Chamber of Commerce and Eden Central Collaborate

On Friday, April 24th, students from the Eden Central High School participated in Shadow Day. Members of the Eden Chamber of Commerce invited several students to their business places for an in-depth tour of their compa-nies. Students were each assigned a location expecting to hear how their company started up, what their services are, and what their future looks like. The students reported af-ter the day was over to the Eden Chamber and their teacher what they got out of their experience. The Chamber’s and school’s goal is to have students see business in action in our community and to ignite the interest in our young peo-ple to come back to Eden after college to work. Eden Seniors On Tuesday May 5 an enthusiastic group of Eden Seniors filled the community room of the Eden Library to enjoy a program on “Buffalo’s Waterfront, Past, Present, and Fu-ture”. Brad Hahn, executive director of Explore Buffalo, presented this program which is one of the University Ex-press offering for the spring of 2105. ACES- Active Citizens for Eden Seniors sponsored the program which is ordinar-ily only available at select Senior Centers in Erie County. Mr. Hahn’s slide show traced the history of the waterfront from the first French Explorers to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 when it became one of the most important ports in the world. He continued with the development of the waterfront through today with its renaissance as a cen-ter for recreation and entertainment while still remaining an active port. At the end of the program, Veronica Sullivan of Community Concern let the group know that the next ACES program will be on Medicare and Medicaid and long term care options and the Eden Town Hall on June 16 at 11AM. Prepping Hanging Baskets for the Town of Eden

The Eden Garden Club recently planted 68 hanging baskets that adorn the Town of Eden during the summer months. The baskets were planted at Zittel's greenhouse, and then were picked up by local growers to flourish until ready to hang along the streets in Eden. This position is 19 hours per week. Job description is as follows: A person who performs any enforcement activity. Code Enforcement official enforcement activities include building safety inspector enforcement activities; review and /or approval of plans incidental to the issuance of a permit for the construction or alternation of buildings and structures; construction inspections performed during and/or upon completion of the construction or alternation of buildings and structures.

Candidates must have the following qualifications: (A.) Graduate from a regionally accredited or New York State registered 2 or 4 year college with a degree in engineering, construction, fire protection, architectural technology or related field; or:(B.) Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma and 2 years experience in the building trades, engineering, architecture, building inspection, public health inspection, fire fighting or fire inspection; or:An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A. and B. above. (Type of license or certificate required: Special Training and Certification Requirement required under Section 159-A, New York State Executive Law.)

May is Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Month A time for motorists and motorcyclists to learn about safely sharing the road Warmer weather is approaching, daylight hours are longer - it is finally spring. Motorcycle riders across Erie County are tuning up their bikes and getting ready for the riding season and the open road. Motorcycles are becom-ing ever more popular; they are inexpensive to operate, fun to ride and easy to park. In Erie County alone, there are more than 22,000 registered motorcycle riders who use their cycles for commuting, touring and recreational activi-ties. I want to remind all motorists, especially new drivers, to be alert to the presence of motorcycles on the road and to share the road safely. Cyclists often ride to one side of the lane and often times the motorcycle can hide in your vehicle's "blind spot". Carefully check before turning or changing lanes and look two or three times before making a move. Allow more following distance for motorcycles -- two or three car lengths is recommended, more if the roads are wet or visibility is poor. Unfortunately many riders never learn the critical skills needed to ride safely. Riders should take a moment to re-view the aspects of motorcycle safety- wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet, ride within your skill lim-its, ride unimpaired and become a life-long learner by tak-ing refresher rider safety courses. Riders can benefit from one of the motorcycle safety programs offered at several local locations for both new riders looking to learn and ex-perienced motorcyclists who want to reinforce safe driving practices. Before hitting the road this driving season, I encour-age all motorcycle riders to visit any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus to get properly licensed and to register their "bikes".
