NATIONAL CHAMPIONS AT PORTLAND STATE

A two-sport star at Portland State, Robin Unger excelled both on the track and on the volleyball court. Unger first gained notoriety playing volleyball as she helped the Vikings to their fourth National Champi-onship. Despite playing just two seasons, she was named to the AVCA All-Region Team in 1993 and finished her career fifth in career hitting percentage (.305).

It was with the track squad where Unger truly shined. A three-time All-American in the heptathlon, she won national championships in 1995 and 1996. Moreover, she accomplished her second national title while com-peting with a broken bone in her foot. In 1996, Unger was recognized by the NCAA as the Oregon Woman Athlete of the Year. Upon graduation, she held school-records in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump and the heptathlon. She competed in the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the hep-tathlon.

Terry Livermore left a lasting legacy on the Park Blocks, as he became the Vikings first NCAA Track and Field champion in the shot put in 1969. He was a two-time All-American in the event and finished fourth at the NCAA College Division Championship prior to National Championship in ’69. The 1969 track team finished tied for third at the College Division Champion ship with Livermore’s title to lead the way.

The Tigard High School graduate still owns the Port-land State shot put record, 57-2, and is fourth all-time in the discus as well, 158-7.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS AT PORTLAND STATE

Dave Robbins had the distinction of becoming Port-land State’s first national champion runner and NCAA Champion. A talented distance runner, Robbins won the NCAA College Division Cross Country Champion-ship in 1968.

Robbins also held all of Portland State College’s Track and Field distance records during his competitive days. In addition to his national championship, he placed fifth at nationals in the 1,500-meters. Robbins was a graduate of Sunset High School.

Steve Curtice transferred to Portland State College in 1962 and made an immediate impact on the track and field program, and the university as he was the first national champion on the Park Blocks. The Portland native and Parkrose High School graduate won the NAIA National Javelin Championship in 1962 with a then-championship record throw of 217-11. He led the team to a seventh place finish at the championship that season and made headlines the following day in The Oregonian .

At the end of his career at Portland State, Curtice was the school record holder in the javelin with a toss of 226-4 in 1963, besting his old mark of 220-11.
