Solemnity of All Saints
This week the Church celebrates all the saints: canonized or bea fied, and the mul tude of those who are in heaven enjoying the bea fic vision that are only known to God. During the early centuries the Saints venerated by the Church were all martyrs. Later on the Popes set November 1 as the day for commemora ng all the Saints. We all have this "universal call to holiness." What must we to do in order to join the company of the saints in heaven? We "must follow in His footsteps and conform [our]selves to His image seeking the will of the Father in all things. [We] must devote [our]selves with all [our] being to the glory of God and the service of [our] neighbor. In this way, the holiness of the People of God will grow into an abundant harvest of good, as is admirably shown by the life of so many saints in Church history" (Lumen Gen um, 40). Don't forget to pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory from November 1 to the 8th.
All Saints Day
During the year the Church celebrates one by one the feasts of the saints. Today she joins them all in one fes val. In addi on to those whose names she knows, she recalls in a magnificent vision all the others "of all na ons and tribes standing before the throne and in sight of the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, proclaiming Him who redeemed them in His Blood." The feast of All Saints should inspire us with tremendous hope. Among the saints in heaven are some whom we have known. All lived on earth lives like our own. They were bap zed, marked with the sign of faith, they were faithful to Christ's teaching and they have gone before us to the heavenly home whence they call on us to follow them. The Gospel of the Bea tudes, read today, while it shows their happiness, shows, too, the road that they followed; there is no other that will lead us whither they have gone.
All Souls Day The fundamental idea of All Souls Day is the acknowledgement of human frailty. Since very few people achieve perfec on in this life, going to our graves with traces of sinfulness. Some period of purifica on seems necessary before a soul comes face to face with God. The Council of Trent (The Council existed from 1545 to 1563 with the purpose of clarifying doctrines of the Church and the execu on of a thorough reform of the inner life of the Church by removing the numerous abuses that had developed in it) affirmed this purgatory state and insisted that the prayers of the living can speed the process of purifica on. Based on the doctrine that the souls of the faithful which at death have not been cleansed from the temporal punishment due to venial sins (less serious sin that weakens our rela onship with God), or have not fully purged from a achment to mortal sins (serious sin that breaks our rela onship with God), cannot a ain the bea fic vision (the eternal and direct visual percep on of God enjoyed by those who are in Heaven, impar ng supreme happiness or blessedness), and they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the Mass. In other words, in our prayers, we are hoping to release them from Purgatory (which is a condi on or process of purifica on in which souls of those who die in a state of grace are made ready and achieve the holiness necessary to enter heaven). Purgatory is o en thought of as a terrible holding place that one’s soul goes to while awai ng judgment, but Purgatory is actually more of a process of prepara on, both spiritually and emo onally. Think about Purgatory this way: when you are in darkness and step out and see the bright sun shine or bright light, instead of it being a wonderful experience we are o en blinded and it causes us discomfort. This is what it would be like if we all of a sudden came face to face with the brilliance of God. So it is necessary for us to go through the process of Purgatory so that when we finally are in heaven and in the presence of God it is a joyous and pleasant experience and we ourselves are worthy of being in God’s presence.
Things to Do: Visi ng a cemetery and praying for the dead during the Octave of All Saints' Day (November 1 through November 8) will gain a plenary indulgence that can be applied only to the souls in purgatory. On other days, this work gains a par al indulgence.
Spend a li le me a er Mass thanking God for all the unnamed saints, some of whom could be our own rela ves.
Have a special meal and if you have young children have them dress up like saints and play games. Pray the Litany of the Saints -- you could make it really special by chan ng it ("he who sings prays twice") and you could read an
explana on of this litany, which is considered the model of all other litanies. www.catholicculture.org

FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL FALL PLAY “IS HE DEAD?” You are invited to join us as we present our annual Fenwick High School Blackfriars Guild Fall Play, "IS HE DEAD?", by Mark Twain! Set in and near Paris in 1846, “Is He Dead?” pre-sents a lineup of cultural and farcical stereotypes, seen with the wide-eyed-with-a-wink gaze of Mark Twain. At the show’s center is Jean-François Millet, a brilliant but unrecognized painter. Since Jean-François can’t sell a landscape to save his life (literally), his inner circle of bohemian friends — an ethnic stew made up of an American, a German, and an Irishman — convince him that faking his death is just the cket for raising his stock. So Jean-François disappears from life and re-emerges as his imaginary twin sister, a widow both mad and madcap. The expected complica ons ensue! Show mes are: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3 at 7:00 p.m. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 AT 7:00 p.m. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5, at 3:00 p.m. RESERVED SEATS are $22 and general sea ng is $16 for adults and $11 for students and senior ci zens. wspominać będziemy wszystkich zmarłych z naszej parafii z wyczytaniem nazwisk osób które odeszły od nas od listopada 2016 do października, 2017.

What’s up with the Pharisees and Sadducees? These guys try and try and try to trip up Jesus--to catch him in his speech--but they just can’t get it right. They’re trying to trip him up, of course, because they’re red of being the target of his parables. They’re red of being indicted me and me again by an unschooled, wandering preacher. From Nazareth, no less. And Jesus is unrelen ng. In the parable of the two sons who were asked by their father to work in the vineyard, Jesus tells the religious elite, “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and pros tutes are entering the kingdom of God before you…” In the parable of the tenants in the vineyard, Jesus tell them, “…the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” And in the parable of the wedding feast, a er implying that they are like the invited guests who decide they have be er things to do, or who come to the feast improperly a red, Jesus simply says, “Many are invited, but few are chosen.” These elders are a pa ent folk, though. They bide their me. But their trouble is that they violate in perpetuity the maxim that prosecutors cling to on those lawyer shows on TV: Never ask a ques on unless you already know the answer. In their defense, they probably think they know the answer, but each me, they forget who they’re dealing with. Remember last week? “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, for you do not regard a person’s status. Tell us
then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” Oh, please… And preceding today’s Gospel in Ma hew, the Sadducees set up an elaborate scenario about a man who marries a woman and dies, and each of his seven brothers marry her and die in turn, and they want to know at the resurrec on (which they don’t even believe in), “whose wife will she be?” C’mon. Really? By comparison, today’s challenge is easy. “When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” All the be er to violate the least, I suppose. Ul mately, these holier-than-thou types are gunning to invalidate Christ’s authority. But it won’t be today as Jesus again out-wits them. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment,” he answers, connec ng all the way back to Deuteronomy 6:5. Then he connects back to Levi cus 19:18, adding, “The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” before concluding, “The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” Got ques ons? Jesus has answers. And the Pharisees and Sadducees are probably wishing they’d have watched more of those lawyer shows on TV.
