Maquoketa City Council agreed to give the developer at the Hurst Hotel Apartments a $200,000 loan provided he first resolve complaints from area contractors who say they have not been paid for their work. Jackson County Board of Supervisors was asked to consider passing an ordinance that would regulate tattoo artists and body piercing businesses in the county. 20 YEARS AGO – 1998 Maquoketa gymnast Ashley Lechtenberg amazes many people. She has been formally involved in gymnastics for only six months, and already is in the same level 6 as gymnasts who have been training for five to eight years. Kathleen Block, a Maquoketa High School graduate now attending Iowa State University, is a state vice president of the FFA. The past year has been the culmination of a great six years in FFA. Tent show visits Maquoketa School. A special performance of a “Toby Show” was given by the owners of the Schaffner Players Tent Theatre, which claims to be the last traveling tent company left in the United States. The show features old-time vaudeville routines like many years ago. The Maquoketa Cardinals basketball team went to Cascade and brought back a 48-38 win over the Cougars to claim a share of the Big Bend Conference championship. 30 YEARS AGO – 1988 J.C. and Arlene Engel hold a photo of their three sons, Neal, Lynn, and Dean, all of whom were named Future Farmers of America Iowa Farmers during their high school FFA careers. J.C. Engel was named an FFA American Farmer in 1953. State prosecutor James Kivi will re-try James Corder on murder and arson charges in Des Moines. The first trial was moved from Maquoketa to Muscatine on a change of venue because of publicity. The second trial was moved to Des Moines for the same reason. Denyse Francois, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Frandsen, was recently named a certified skills trainer at F. B. Leon Guerrero Middle School in Yigo, Guam. Her husband is a U.S. military serviceman stationed there. She is a music teacher at the school and instructs other teachers to teach students how to avoid drug use, vandalism, shoplifting and cheating on tests. 40 YEARS AGO – 1978 Maquoketa Cardinal Bands Present a Pops Concert pancake supper in the high school gym. Your man for sports was there, as he is at most area sporting events, Jack Marlowe, Maquoketa newspaper sports editor. He travels throughout Eastern Iowa reporting on the action at high school sporting events in the pages of the Jackson Sentinel and Maquoketa Community Press, Weekender, as our subscribers know. Girls’ nylon gowns $2.22; novelty tops, $2.22; Boys 8-18 denim fashion jeans, $8.22; nylon scarves, 22¢ 50 YEARS AGO – 1968 The Ross River Feed and Hatchery of Maquoketa, Preston and Ten Mile has been sold to Honegger’s and Company of Fairbury, Illinois. Imperial Apartments on Western Avenue in Maquoketa includes 27 apartments in three new buildings. Don Caraway is president and builder of these needed apartments. Marine Pfc. Lawrence Patterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Patterson, Delmar, is in the Yokishee Naval Hospital, Yokishee, Japan, receiving treatment for leg injuries received while on duty near Dai Loc, Vietnam. 60 YEARS AGO – 1958 Eight Maquoketa High School juniors and seniors were inducted into the Robert A. Millikan Chapter of National Honor Society. They were Judy Holtz, Barbara Kumpf, Judy Janssen, Glen Williams, Linda Sagers, Joy Merrick, Boyd Wilcox and Kay Lahann. Assistant Maquoketa Police Chief Frank Grimm, 54, died suddenly of a heart attack in his rural home northeast of Maquoketa. Haven Schmidt, 22-year-old Maquoketa baseball catcher who has spent only three years in the minor leagues, has been moved up from Class A Sally League to the Cincinnati Reds this season. 70 YEARS AGO – 1948 The much talked about “new look” is definitely a part of Maquoketa now. The remodeling project on City Hall brought about removal of a turret-like entrance corner. Jacqueline Frost was elected president of the Y-teens, Maquoketa High School all-girl organization. Ed Pfeiffer has sold his grocery store on South Prospect Street to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Allisio of Oelwein. Mrs. Allisio was formerly Helen Regenwether of Maquoketa. 80 YEARS AGO – 1938 Miss Marion Williams, public librarian, has received a two-year appointment to membership on the Iowa State Library Association legislative committee. Mrs. Fred Behnke of Monmouth wins a large loaf of bread at Morning Glory Bakery. The loaf weighed 2 lbs., 10 7/8 ounces. Mrs. Behnke’s guess was 2 lbs. 11 oz. Proprietors of the bakery invite everyone to come in and guess. It was voted that the county board of education go on record as unanimously endorsing the candidacy of County Supt. Charles Martin for the office of state superintendent of public instruction. 90 YEARS AGO – 1928 A declaration of intention for citizenship was issued to Walter Ockelmann and Johannes Ockelmann, both of Preston. Henry Mitchell of Maquoketa was elected president of the Eastern Iowa Lumberman’s Association at the annual meeting. Directors of the Andrew Cooperative Creamery Co. met and hired Carl Gisel as one of their truck drivers on the cream route and John Wagener for work in the mill. Herman Flagel will continue with the dray truck, C. O. Von Rhein as buttermaker, Asa White, assistant. 100 YEARS AGO – 1918 Next Monday we will assemble to escort 94 more of Jackson County’s best blood to the depot, and bid them God speed as they head to Camp Dodge. No effort will be spared to equal the farewell program given last September when 70 of our lads left us to join the colors. Forty boys and about an equal number of men met for the purpose of perfecting the organization of the Boys’ Calf club. At a public sale held by Andrew Reistroffer at his farm 1 mile west of Bellevue, seed corn sold for the highest price ever known around here. Mr. Reistroffer sold 20 bushels of choice seed corn ranging in price from $20 to $25 per bushel, with one bushel selling for $35.75, a record price. Cardinal Kenny Bowman reels in a rebound above the grasp of a Monticello Panther. Bowman, while scoring 12 for the Cards, rebounded eight in the 1978 basketball game that earned for the Cards a spot at the state boys basketball tournament. The Cardinal girls softball team celebrates after defeating Monticello in 11 innings for a state softball berth in 1998. That was the team’s first trip to the state tournament in school history. Maquoketa Community School Board The board meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the school’s central office. The meeting kicks off with a budget workshop followed by regular meeting items.
