With that being said, let me tell you some good things about this past year and some of the big things on the horizon. We have had 47 new members join Springvale so far (33 by letter and 14 by baptism). We called Sean McElrath as full time Associate Pastor of Education and Students. We initiated a partnership with Jamie Murphy and Proactive Parenting Initiative to give our parents a great resource to assist them in being Godly parents. Blake Martin stepped down after eight and a half years of faithful service as Associate Pastor of Students and is now working with Proactive Parenting Initiative as a consultant. Our staff did an outstanding job promoting the different ministries: Organist: David Amos; Pianist: Ann Coker; Administrative Assistant: Vickie Cox; Director of Christian Counseling Ministries: Loretta Hazel; Director of Children’s Ministries: Shana Herndon; Worship Leader: Nancy Huggins; and Associate Pastor of Education and Students: Sean McElrath. ShipSHAPE children’s ministry begins on August 20th. Wednesday Suppers will resume August 16th @ 5:45. Blake Martin will be preaching our Homecoming sermon on October 8th. A new unit of Proactive Parenting will begin in October. We look forward to another exciting year as we strive to be a Fellowship of Encouragement - Hebrews 10:25. Our pastor and music worship leader have asked me to check into the possibility of our organizing a choir for “Mature Voices”, ages 50 and up. This choir would prepare and share music occasionally for Sunday worship and for extended ministry to nursing homes and retirement centers in our area. The music would be easy to learn and in a variety of styles like favorite gospel humns, praise and worship, southern gospel and moderately contemporary. Music reading and solo voices not required, though most wel- come! No auditions! A strong commitment to faithful rehearsal attendance will be expected. To determine a best rehearsal time (45 minutes per week), we need your response on an interest card available in the fellowship hall, sanctuary foyer, and choir room. Re- hearsals will begin (if sufficient interest) in September or early October. JUST AS I AM … Shana Herndon As I write this article, today marks a week since both of our dogs died in a most un-fortunate accident. Throughout the horrible ordeal, I learned so much but most importantly, God taught me a valuable lesson on parenting. The entire experience was so grief-stricken and so unexpected. One of the dogs was my daughter, Holly’s, total companion in life. Holly had been through so much with this dog. She nurtured the dog during her first litter and gave her routine medicines. She would pester me to get her groomed and watch out for her during the booming thunder storms. The dog, Kelly, would sit under Holly’s feet during school (homeschool) and jump on the golf cart to ride with Holly to check on the farm animals. Holly would lie on the floor with Kelly and Kelly would return with a paw gesture. I’m sure Kelly heard all her secrets and soothed her wounds.

To say that Holly loved Kelly seems so lacking. Over the years, it made me uncom-fortable to see how close Holly was to Kelly because I knew the inevitable would happen. I remember telling her, “that dog’s gonna break your heart one day”. We all thought “that day” was way in the future. It would happen when Holly graduated from high school or sometime else in the unforeseeable future. Well. “that day” came last Saturday and we are still feeling the hole. I remember walking up to Holly as she sat on the grass crying and petting Kelly. Holly and I knew the inevitable would happen. We would have to bury these dogs that day. To make matters worse, my husband was out of town. So, she and I began the arduous process of digging a hole. The soil was rocky and hard. The temperature was steamy. The whole process took hours but it seemed like we were in a timeless vacuum.

As we covered Kelly and Louie with dirt, I audibly cried as I saw my daughter’s child-hood being buried. You see, she buried Kelly in her baby blanket along with a heart-felt letter. Holly grew up that day. The physical toil of digging a grave was immense but it was over by the evening. The emotional toil was and is long lasting.

For the first time, I realized, as a mother that I could not help my daughter’s pain. I could not give her Tylenol, Benadryl, or a colorful princess band-aid. There wasn’t a heating pad or ice pad to heal the pain. However, it occurred to me that although I could not give her any pain-reliever or ointment, I had given her a foundation of faith. God, “Jehovah-Rapha”- the Lord who heals, would ultimately help Holly move toward a new beginning and a new future without her precious canine companion.

So, I encourage you all parents. As we get caught up in preparing our children for life,

don’t forget the most important thing…their faith in Jesus. It’s great to have good grades,

it’s fun to watch them excel in sports, and it’s a blast to see them enjoying times at the lake.

But one day, life will hit them and they will need the foundation of faith in Jesus.
