Indoorsorout,stairsareoneofthemostdangeroussystemsanywhereinabuilding.Fallsinvolvingstairscanresultinseriouspersonalinjury;that’swherethebigmoneyisforattorneys.Onadeck,stairsarethird(behindledgerdetachmentandguardfailures)intermsofnumberofinjuriessuffered.

StairsBuiltRightInteriorandexteriorstairssharealmostallofthesamerequirements.Ifanything,deckbuildersshouldbemorecarefulaboutapplyingcurrentsafetyandstructuralstandardstoexteriorstairsbecausetheyaresubjecttoenvironmentalconditionsthatmayexacerbatesafetyandstructuralproblems.

Butwhichstandardsapply?It’sbesttothinkofbuildingcodesasminimumstandards,notasthestandardsforcontractorswhobuildqualitydecks.Keepinmindthatevenwhenadeckcomplieswithalocalbuildingcode,thecodeofficialwhoinspectsitisnotresponsibleforensuringthatthedeckissafe.
