    MISS

  • This is the entrance season. Dont miss the important exams

    EntRAnCE ExAms

Making endless rounds of post oices and banks is so tiring, cribs Dr Anandharaman, a harried father of a 17-year-old. His daughter is appearing for 10+2 and aspires to be an engineer. He has so far illed in 11 application forms for diferent state

and national-level entrances and a few are to follow. What is making matters worse is the indiference of most of the test-conducting agencies, especially the state-led ones like CBSE or NITs. None of them respond, and their phone lines are perpetually busy, laments Anandharaman. To help thousands of parents like him, we have put together detailed infor-mation on over 50 entrances across the four major disciplines: Medicine, Engineering, Law and Hotel Management.

For each of the entrances, we have provided detailed information on the process of form illing, syllabus, test pattern, counselling process and seats availability. Continuing our tradition, we will also publish adviso-ries on how to crack them. During the course of next three months, in case you have any queries with respect to any of these examinations you are most welcome to call up our helpline number: 011- 40 360 360.

Entrance examinations in the country vary in their objective and scale widely. The biggest of course is the JEE (Main) which sees over 1.5 mil-lion aspirants. Other private and deemed universities that conduct their own examinations for diferent programmes get between 5000-30,000 aspirants. It would make sense to appear for good private university entrances because, quite a few of them ofer good scholarships for top-pers in their respective examinations.

Do not miss out on applying to your preferred institutions. Good Luck!

Whether your interest is in Engineering, medicine, Law or Hotel management, the period between march and may, at times even June is meant for writing a series of entrance exams. Careers360 helps you prioritize

    ENTRANCE EXAMS

F irst step that one takes to become a doctor or rather a professional adept in the ield of medicine is to opt for subjects in Life Sci-

ences, particularly Biology while in high school. The next step is to prepare for medical entrance examinations, during or after the year of passing class 12, that are held mostly in the month of April, May and June every year. Clearing the exam successfully helps you secure admission in a medical school to under-take an undergraduate medical degree, primarily MBBS or BDS (Dental).

There are slight variations in eligibil-ity norms for various entrances. Usu-ally candidates must be of 17 years of age and must have passed 10+2 from a recognized board with 50/45 percent in the aggregate (40 percent for SC/ST). The candidates appearing for their board exam in 2014 are also eligible to apply. The candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Maths or Biology.

Cracking the examA career in medicine, especially in India with roughly 50,000-odd seats at the undergraduate level is based on your ability to qualify national or state-level tests. You need to test your ability in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zool-ogy. In these exams, apart from being accurate, you also need to be alert and very quick. In most of the exams for which we are listing out key informa-tion (nature, application procedure, fees, important dates, intake, selection), the answers have to be given in less than a minute per question. The assessment in a way relates to the profession that demands an enquiring mind, the capac-ity to acquire high levels of knowledge which has to be constantly up-dated, and the ability to relate to people as individ-uals, each with their own health needs.

found on the oicial websitel The candidates can also acquire the

    ENGINEERING

Choosing to do Engineering is about linking to the idea of con-verting scientiic knowledge into technology and technology into

innovations. Engineering is at the core of economic growth and plays a criti-cal role in tackling global challenges, including water and food security, cli-mate change and biodiversity, infra-structure and energy, health and popu-lation. In India, typically the challenge before engineers is in manufacturing, natural resources, infrastructure and science sectors.

There are close to 95 countries that have a population less than the number of engineering seats we have in India and this includes names like Estonia, Mauritius, and Bhutan. Standing tall at around 2.0 million seats in engineering at the undergraduate level, the issue of

employability comes to the forefront. With the rapid rise of vacant seats in engineering colleges, the concern of students (and parents) is increasingly seen to be focused on the quality of engineering education these institutions are ofering. Quality institutions irst tend to eliminate the non-focused and ill-suited candidates and then focus on inally selecting among the shortlisted ones for their BE/B.Tech programmes. This exercise is carried out in diferent modes where candidates have to appear in two written tests, or sometime give one written test and add the qualifying examination score (class 12th or equiva-lent). We list out the exams with their important details in a manner that it gives you an overview of entrance tests that you should not miss out based on your preference and need.w

    LAW

Legal studies is one of those areas in the ield of education in India which underwent major chang-es in the last two decades. This

transformation began with the estab-lishment of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore in 1987. The National Law School, Bangalore proved to be qualitatively diferent from most of the university law departments and ailiated law colleges. The success of this experiment led to the establish-ment of such law schools in several other states and there are ifteen of them now admitting more than 2000 students every year.

Law courses are of ive years in dura-tion and the student is awarded a BA LLB. Some do ofer a BSc or BCom ver-sion too. The Bar Council of Indias reg-ulation requires Law Schools to teach 12 courses on Liberal Arts/Science/ Commerce/Management, wherein the subjects are grouped as one major and two minors. To illustrate this point, if a student opts for BA LLB (Hons) course, he/she will have to study 6 courses of Political Science, 3 courses of Econom-ics and 3 courses of Sociology. Again, the above is only an illustration and the scheme of subjects ofered will vary from University to University. With respect to the Law courses, most of the Universities ofer minimum number of mandatory courses as prescribed by the Bar Council of India.

Young lawyers these days enjoy an unprecedented range of options. While the most popular options after gradua-tion remain law irms or corporate in-house legal departments, we also see private-sector litigation emerging as an option of choice. LPOs have also emerged as a lucrative option as out-sourcing is gaining ground.

All India Law Entrance Test (AILET)

Conducted by National Law University (NLU), Delhi, All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) allows admission to 5-year BA LLB (Hons) course ofered at NLU, Delhi.
