The school board and superintendent have worked jointly

together as far as possible, leaving the supervision of

schools solely with the latter.

Maps have been introduced into all the schools where

needed.

No changes have been made in text books on account of

the extra expense caused by the purchase of books in the es-

tablishment of a high school. The winter term of the high

school, from the extra appropriation, is now in progress with

Mr. Isaac Copp and Lydia B Rounds as teachers, hence it

does not appear in the tabulations of schools

We respectfully urge that the Supervisory District system

and the winter term of the High School be made permanent.

The supervision of schools is reported in another column.

The annual school meeting will be held in the town hall,

at 2 p. m., on Saturday, March 16, 1901.

}Auditors.

To the School Board of Alton ;

—The cordial relations existing between your Board and the

Superintendent of schools, together with the constant consultation

concerning all school matters, makes a report of my work al-

most unnecessary; but for the benefit of all who are Interested I

think the following brief report desirable:

The course of study adopted before my connection with your

schools has been strictly adhered to and meets every reasonable

requirement. Its application in the smaller schools required that

I should classify the scholars, and this 1 have done. The number

of daily recitations has been reduced from nearly thirty to less

than twenty by this classification and the recitation time for each

important study has been increased from about twelve minutes to

fully twenty minutes, a most valuable gain. All the schools in

town are now pursuing exactly the same line of studies and scholars

can change from school to school if occasion arises and find them-

Page 42: (5. V jLoasWk

34

selves fitted to enter corresponding classes, a fact of great impor-

tance when considered in relation to the High School.

The High School has started out under favorable conditions

and 1 cannot too strongly urge the citizens of Alton to provide for

its continuance, the evident interest taken by the scholars, as well

as the work accomplished, is very creditable both to teachers and

scholars. The grade of the work needs advancing to be sure, but

time will early correct this fault.

I have endeavored to aid teachers and scholars in the fol-

lowing ways: First, by classifying scholars ; second, by attempting

to bring scholars up to the prescribed course of study; third, by

suggestions relating to methods of teaching, and fourth by de-

termining results by uniform examinations.

During the two terms I have made 89 school visits in Alton

and have held three teachers' meetings. The best that 1 have to

report is the uniformly cordial cooperation of every teacher as

well as the pleasant relations with scholars, this condition making

my work very pleasant. I ask finally that the statistics relating to

tardiness be studied. It is doubtful if the record of the Grammarand High Schools can be equalled in the state. Over fifty scholars

with but a single tardiness in eleven weeks, and only nine in two

terms is very remarkable. It will be profitable for parents and

scholars in other schools to compare this record with their own so

that next term the whole town may serve as a model in this re-

spect.

Respectfully submitted,

GEO. H. WHITCHER, Supt. of Schools.

There are 1213 books in tbe library ; of this number some

fifty or more will have to be rebound before they can aaaiu be

used. One hundred books have been rebound during the past

year A new book c^se has also been purchased, and yet we

still lack room for all the books. With the number increasing

each year we think the town should appropriate enough money

to supply what book cases are needed, and to have such books

rebound as are no longer fit to use.

The library is open Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 4, and

Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock ; Saturday afternoon

from 2 to 4, and Saturday evening from 7 to 9 o^clock.
