Firstly the students have worked very well and have achieved some very good results. For students we hope that they manage their own learning and challenge themselves to always try to improve in everything they do but to also realize that if at first they don’t succeed, to persevere and continue to work towards their goals. Staff has also worked tirelessly this year, coming to terms with many changes and learning a considerable amount of new concepts and ways of working. We have been focusing on developing understandings on challenging students learning and the elements that make effective teachers. Along with the students, parents and staff at our school, thanks must also go to School Council, led by Felicity Di Toro as our President and Parents’ and Friends’ Club, led by Bronwyn Woodward. Both groups have a dedicated band of people working with them to deliver direction and fundraising services to Hazelwood North Primary School. Without these people, who give many unpaid hours of their time, we would not be able to function. At our last school assembly for the year, the following students were presented with awards. These students have shown throughout the year to be hard working students who value their own learning and support others. They are good role models for others in the school. These are sought after awards amongst the children and highly regarded by school community. RSL Award - $200 – Bill Brannan Award - Blake Gittos The Billington Family Leadership Award - $ 120 – Sophie Alexander Kurnai College Award – Dux - Chloe Franssen - Scholarship Hazelwood North Dux Award – Lara Kuijpers – Certificate & $100 John Tipping Academic Award (Churchill Lions Club) – $250 - Patrick Kearns Morwell Newsagent Award – Leadership - $30 - Shaynia Logue Russell Northe Citizenship Award - $100 Voucher & Plaque – Emily Hayes

…5 sleeps until Christmas… PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS……….Paul Jorgensen (Principal) As the year comes to a close for 2013, I would like to thank everyone for all of the terrific work that has happened at Hazelwood North PS this year.

• RSL Award - $200 – Bill Brannan Award - Blake Gittos • The Billington Family Leadership Award - $ 120 – Sophie Alexander • Kurnai College Award – Dux - Chloe Franssen - Scholarship • Hazelwood North Dux Award – Lara Kuijpers – Certificate & $100 • John Tipping Academic Award (Churchill Lions Club) – $250 - Patrick Kearns • Morwell Newsagent Award – Leadership - $30 - Shaynia Logue • Russell Northe Citizenship Award - $100 Voucher & Plaque – Emily Hayes

The Civic & Citizenship/Achievement Awards were presented to the following students at our End of Year Christmas function. These awards introduced this year are quickly becoming very valued awards. We aim to present them three times each year and to try to have these coincide with special events. This year this was with ANZAC day which were presented by Mr. Les Mayer from the R.S.L. The second awards were presented by Darren Chester MLA and coincided with students’ work around Government and the third awards were presented at our end of year function by Ron Wall who retired from teaching music to our students after many years. Congratulations to the following students:

Sophie Bellingham Olivia Short Alex Lovison Ali Heffernan Jacinta Gittos Emily Hayes

…Our ‘End of Year Christmas Concert’ farewells Mr. Music Man, Ron Wall…

A reminder to all that as we move towards reducing some of our costs with regards to paper and printing, newsletters will be emailed out next year – NO HARD COPIES. If this poses real problems for you, please contact us for other arrangements. We also have our school magazine ‘The Voice’ sent out electronically. This year it is a 69 page document in full colour so you can imagine the costs associated with producing and printing such a document. This is being provided via children bringing an external memory drive to school for it to be placed on. We will also put the magazine on our website for parents and students to access.

As parents consider purchasing clothing for children, please keep in mind the uniform policy requires students to wear black or white shoes that cover the foot and protects toes. Recently very bright, multi-coloured shoes and sometimes inappropriate footwear has been worn to school. This does not meet current school uniform policy. Please consider providing appropriate footwear when purchasing back to school clothing next year. Sometimes jewellery can also be an issue. There should be no ‘dangling’ type of jewellery worn to school as a safety issue. Next year in Term One, School Council approved the trial of having lunch orders outsourced and occurring approximately once a month. The aim is to have three lunch orders in Term One and dates for these will be set early next year. We will need feedback from parents in Term one regarding this including value for money, menu selection, frequency of orders etc. Our Grade 6 Graduation, which was held on Tuesday, 17th December, 2013 at the Italian Club in Morwell, was organised by Mrs. Duncan and by all accounts, was a very successful evening for our 18 graduates (some were a little camera shy and didn’t make it in the picture). The students were presented with their Graduation Certificate and a pen to mark this very special occasion. Good luck to all the Grade 6 students.

Art Work display in the Assembly Hall organised by our Art Teacher, Ms. Caryn Rule at the Christmas Concert.

LOST PROPERTY - STUCK ON YOU As the end of year is near, I urge you to check the lost property for any clothing items that may have been misplaced. I will be placing the surplus lost property on the second-hand uniform rack for sale. Don't forget to clearly label your school uniforms before returning to school next year. The easy way to do this is with some iron labels which ensure that your lost property is returned to you. HZNPS will receive a commission from STUCK ON YOU labels via this link: http://stuckonyou.com.au/hazelwoodnorthps Currently, we have only received $3.20 this year in commission from the 2 sales that have been purchased from this site. This is disappointing that we have not received more orders than this given the amount of unclaimed uniforms. This is an easy way to support your school and ensure your school jumpers don't get lost. It is so much easier to read a clearly printed label, rather than texta marks on the clothing tag. CLEAR IDENTIFICATION IS A MUST. If we cannot return your clothing, it will be put on the second-hand uniform stand and will be sold onto others. So please, these holidays, support our school and grab some labels; they will be delivered direct to you and you may save $$$$ in lost uniforms. A huge thank you must go to Mrs. Twyerould who has offered her services to launder all the second-hand uniforms at the end of year. Thank you Rosemary. School Concert What a great night the children put on for us even under difficult conditions. Thanks to everyone on the night. Sales of candles, chocolates and the raffle raised $346.00. Pancakes On Friday, 20th December, the last day of school, the Parents’ and Friends’ Club will be cooking pancakes for everyone at recess. There is NO charge for these pancakes; we will have maple syrup and lemon toppings. If anyone is interested in coming along and enjoying the final day of school, we will be cooking from about 10.30 am in the Art/Cooking room. Woolworths Aussie Animals and Baby Animals Swap day last day of school - bring along your list and spares. Tidy up at school – Saturday, 1st February A few of us are meeting at school about 9.30 am on Saturday, 1st February to do a little tidy up of the school. If anyone would like to join us, please come along. Please bring garden tools, brooms and cobweb brushes. Any queries, please call me on 0412 855 933. Lunch Orders We will be trialling the out-sourcing of lunch orders to Home Straight Takeaway on a monthly basis for Term 1. Procedure will be the same in that you write the order on a brown paper bag and place correct money in an envelope inside the bag. These will be due in at the latest by Wednesday at 9.30 am. The only change is that there will definitely be NO LATE LUNCH ORDERS accepted. Your feedback on the menu and service will be appreciated and it will determine whether School Council continue with this arrangement.

With your support, we raised over $10,000.00.

This money has gone towards asphalt painting, which happened earlier in the year, our chess board with large pieces as well as ICT equipment and a fridge for the hall. We also fitted out the cooking facility with tools of the trade and some basic ingredients which we hope will become an annual event. Our lovely fruit trees will have some mulch spread and bird netting installed so the children will hopefully have some fruit to eat on their return in February. These are just a few of the things that you helped fund at our school along with lots of other little things to make to children’s learning a bit more interesting. To the grade 6 students and other families leaving the school, we wish you all the very best for the future. Finally, myself along with all from Parents’ and Friends’ Club, we would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday season. Enjoy your time with the family. See you all in 2014.
