Special Guest At Steve Thorpe’s CD Release Party:

GEORGE TERRY SAT IN

You never know who shows up at Lou’s Blues. When Steve Thorpe held his CD release party last month, he

brought a friend, George Terry, to play with him. Maybe not everybody in the crowd realized who they had the fortune to see and hear: Starting off as a studio musician in the late 1960’s, George Terry started a band with Eric Clapton after record-ing the 461 Ocean Blvd. album in 1973. Eric recorded four of George’s songs, “Mainline Florida”, “Lay Down Sally”, “Don’t Blame Me”, and “Let Me Stay” which was not re-leased by Eric and is on George’s Guitar Drive CD. The Bel-lamy Brothers had a hit with George’s song “What’ll I Do”. They did a video with George and were nominated as Country Duo of the Year at the CMA and the ACM Awards. Steve Thorpe and George Terry met a while ago and have been staying in touch. When George, who now lives in Florida, heard about Steve’s CD release party, he decided to join in. In the second set George played some of his old Cap-ton-tunes. What a treat!

Falcon’s Roost is nine years old and counting!

It doesn’t seem like a real long time unless you take into consideration all the venues that have come and gone in nine years. How many have changed their names and how many have flip flopped while trying to decide weather to PLAY the MUSIC or not. The Roost has been delivering live music every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday for nine years. Everything from low down Gritty Blues, to Country, Southern Rock, Metal, Celtic, Punk, and some all original acts. Most of the shows are free, the drink prices are down right cheap and it is a great place to spend an evening. Stop by and keep a solid thang goin’ and check out the Roost Calendar in this issue of Brevard Live or at www.roostbar.com to find your brand of music or fun. P.S.: This little big bar was also a sponsor of this year’s Brevard Live Music Awards. For more information call The Roost at 321-452-0568.

KEEPING THEMUSIC ALIVE!

A Tribute to Led Zeppelin

LED-HED

In the early 80s a new breed of cover band began gaining national popularity and

notoriety. These groups were called “tribute” bands. Instead of having to learn and perform all of the popular chartbusting hits of the day in order to make a living, musicians discov-ered that they could focus on playing the music of just one particular band or genre. More than two decades ago The Doors tribute band, The Back Doors, were a popular frequent attraction at local hot spots like Brassy’s in Cocoa Beach. They not only sounded like the original group, but they dressed like Morrison and company too. Today, gazillions of tribute bands are out making big bucks touring across the country. In fact, Kiss alone has dozens of clones out “strutting” world-wide. One such tribute band currently working hails from right here in Brevard County. Per-forming up and down the East Coast for the last year or so, Melbourne’s own Led Zeppelin knock off, Led-Hed truly takes the tribute band concept to the next level. From the Zeppelin III spoof of their promotional DVD to the era style clothing and wigs right down to the graphics on their custom promo envelopes, these guys truly pay attention to every detail. Okay, so some might not be too crazy about the Jimmy Page guy having a mustache but the Robert Plant guy is pretty darn close. Oh yeah, they’re also a really good band. (www.led-hed.com)

ALL MY BEST by Eddie Scott Motown-vocalist Eddie Scott has released a CD dedi-cated to the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Foundation. (Harry Tyson Moore was a teacher who founded the first branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Brevard County, Florida, and later ran the NAACP in the state of Florida. He and his wife, Harriette V. Moore, were killed on Christmas Eve-ning, 1951. A member of the Ku Klux Klan confessed to the murders.) A portion of the proceeds from the CD sales will be given to this foundation,

florida CDs: The Best Of 2006

Happy holidays and welcome once again

to my world famous, annual, Top Ten wrap up of Brevard’s best CDs of the year. Buttloads of independent Central Florida artists send me stacks of discs to review each year and from

January through November I always (try to) “play nice” and give everyone a little “ink.” However, in December I’m afforded the opportunity to “take off the gloves” and be a bit more open and honest about what I feel were truly the best records of the preceding eleven months. Just so ya know, this list reflects my opinion only. It in no way reflects the opinion of Brevard Live’s editor, staff or advertisers. This annual holiday feature was designed years ago only as a fun means to honor the very best in local music. And since it’s my column and since I’ve devoted the last thirty years of my life to the support and development of independent local music I think that I’m somewhat of a reliable and credible source. So what if I can barely dress myself! See ya next year.

1. MYSTERIOSO - Tales of Terror andSuspense / 7 track CD Quite possibly the best band on earth! Definitely the best and most unique on the Florida scene. Zappa meets P-Funk at the pharmacy while trying to pass forged scripts. (and they do it with NO guitarist!) This is the band’s second consecutive year end #1 ranking (their

self titled 2005 debut record was last year’s #1) and they deserve it. (www.myspace.com/mysterioso)

2. SIMONE - Talk to the Rose /10 track CD I absolutely adore this girl! I love her voice and her songs are magical. Stylisti-cally she fits right in with the classic art-ists of the 70s singer/songwriter era that I’ve always loved so much. A little Rikki Lee mixed with a splash of Norah. (www.simonesongs.com)

3. JON PARROT - 40 Years /10 track CD This was the surprise record of the year. A little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. Well written, performed, and produced. I only hope that it doesn’t take another 40 years for Jon to release his next record. (www.jonparrot.com)

4. SUPER SWAMPER - Wrecked /11 track CD This is the record that I wanted to hate. I went to see the band live in Or-lando earlier this year and I was so turned off by front man Clint Engel’s onstage remarks about Jesus that I literally had to leave the club. However, being an objec-tive, open minded guy, I felt compelled to actually listen to their record before “trashing” it in print. Unfortunately, to my surprise, it rocks. I mean, it REALLY rocks! This is a raw, southern fried, high octane, turbo charged combo that has delivered one heck of an amazing record.(www.SuperSwamperMusic.com)

5. PSYCHO RED - Self Titled / 11 track CD Edgy, new school hip hop at its best. She ain’t exactly producing family enter-

tainment but who does these days. This is an incredible record and this girl deserves to be a huge star. (www.myspace.com/psychoredrap)

6. MAHONIS - Everything Under the Sun/ 7 track CD Mahonis is actually the musical vehicle for Brevard native Tony Sams. For more than two decades Tony has been touring nationally with his own bands as well as with such “biggies” as War-rant and Bad Company’s Brian Howe. Although he’s primarily known as a gui-tarist, on this record Tony plays all of the instruments and provides all of the vocals. The songs are predominately upbeat, radio friendly modern rockers and except for the hideous electronic drums (I can’t articulate clearly enough how much I absolutely detest fake drums!) it’s a great sounding record. Tony’s remake of David Bowie’s Space Oddity is excellent and the solo piano composition Song for KK is the highlight of the record. ([email protected])

7. THE PHOENIX - Flashes of Brilliance / 7 track CDLed by Bryan Lee Foster, this trio com-bines a traditional New Age vibe with heavy guitar and drums. This is an excit-ing record. New Age with “nuts!” (www.thephoenixmusic.com)

8. BILLY CHAPMAN - Sweet Nothings / 13 track CD A stripped down collection of heart-felt acoustic compositions from one of the Space Coast’s true musical treasures. To

For 24 years Dreamer has been rocking the coast. The band plays a huge range of

familiar covers that are both current and from the good ol’ days. They know that their crowds like hearing those familiar songs.

Dreamer is strictly a cover band that plays songs everyone is familiar with. They stay as current as possible, but Bruce says there are some exceptions: “How current can you be when you reach our age bracket? To me, as long as you play it well, it doesn’t matter. It’s not like I’m going to be up there rapping.” Anita Cotti (lead vocals) has been performing since she was a child and continued on as a soloist playing in country music festivals. Her husband Bruce Cotti (drums, vocals) came from a musical family. His father, Joe Cotti, is still in a band to this day: Joe Cottie and the Regions. Bruce has performed with Bob Hope and Ray Eberly AS WELL AS with Ira Sullivan and Louie Belson.

Johnnie Cable (guitar, vocals) also has a range of musical diversity under his belt. He’s performed with and opened acts for Bo Diddley and Lee Greenwood. Jay Yerkes (keyboard, vocals) recently joined dreamer . He had his own local band for 18 years and now enjoys playing along with Dreamer. Dreamer will be performing for the Toyz For Tots benefit at Captain Hiram’s. The show begins at 7 pm on December 9th. Bruce’s father will be in attendance, along with other Marines, representing the Corps as Vice Commandant. For booking info call 321-724-0279. -eroica

The Billy Lee Soul Revue is back! This time the Revue boasts band members that are music students at Stetson University

as well as other experienced musicians.

Tim Ostrow (tenor sax and lead horns), Josh Grossnicklaus (Trumpet), Paul Yanochtko (Alto/Tenor Sax), Freddy Derwitsch (Guitar), Steve Koenig (Drums), Dave Clark (Bass), Eric Young (Keyboard) combine their talents along with Billy Lee (lead vocals) to produce The Billy Lee Soul Revue. Billy Lee himself has quite a long resume. He began singing in an a capella gospel quartet as a young boy and traveled to different churches to perform. Billy Lee has shared the stage with The Drifters, The Flamingos, Chubby Checker and Loretta Lynn, among others. Billy was even the lead vocalist for The Platters for eight years. He also has an album out under Dogtowne Boys titled 590 Dogtowne Rd. that features originals. The Billy Lee Soul Revue does a selection of funk and soul favorites of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s playing tribute to artists like Lou Rawls and Marvin Gaye. The music they play captures the funk and soul movement in Detroit in the early 1960s. I recently saw The Billy Lee Soul Revue at Lou’s Blues and the performance was as outstanding as the music. Everyone

at Lou’s Blues was either moving in their seat or dancing. Though each musician in the band brings their own talent and experience, the whole group immediately melts together on stage to become a unit of pure Funk with a lot of Soul. This year the Billy Lee’s Soul Revue will be ringing in the New Year at Meg O’Malley’s. On Friday and Saturday December 29 and 30, The Billy Lee Soul Revue will be playing at Meg’s starting at 9:30 pm. Sunday, December 31st, Meg’s is having a New Year’s Eve Party and Billy Lee will be back playing at 9:30 pm through the wee hours of 2007. www.thebillyleesoulrevue.com -eroica

Sometimes you want to go where everyone knows your name, and they’re always glad

you came. - We’re talking about a place like Side Pocket Sports Pub, aka “The Beachside Cheers”.

Dont’ let their inconspicuous location fool you. Found in the small Beachside Pawn strip mall at 816 E. Eau Gallie Blvd. in Indian Harbour Beach, Side Pocket has lots to offer. Aside from their friendly clientell they have a well-known AND well-liked bar staff. Greg, Julie, Tommy (top right photo), Tracy, Dave and Carol (bottom right photo) are all treasured icons of the industry and know how to keep their customers coming back. The pub has been there 21 years but ever since partners Darin Vellender and native James Greene, formerlly a well known local musician, purchased it 3 years ago it has continued to become one of

the most friendly, comfortable and secure places to hang out on the beach. Not only do they have 14 tv’s on which to watch baseball, NFL ticket or any of your favorite sports games but they also have 4 well-kept pool tables, dart boards, Golden Tee, video games, a cd juke box and free tabletop shuffleboard. Once very popular in the 80’s & 90’s with leagues, their shuffleboard table is 1 of only 2 in the county. They also have 2 dart leagues, 2 pool leagues, a top-notch softabll team and the owners kindly sponsor several charity golf tournaments each year They are known for their unbelievalbly low drink prices and they are always poured with generosity, a smile and sometimes a show. And since Side Pocket is open from 10am to 2am EVERY DAY ALL YEAR and 366 days on leap year you have no excuses not to stop by and enjoy their neighborly hospitality. Tell em’ Norm sent ya. brevard EATZCaptain Hiram’s in Sebastian:

GETTING AWAY FROM THE GETAWAY...

Ever feel like getting away to a tropical beachside - oh wait, that’s us. Ok, ever feel like getting away from the getaway? Some people do it religiously, weekly

and maybe even nightly. No, they’re not the ones who live in the monstrous beachside homes, they’re the ones that frequent Captain Hiram’s in Sebastian.

20 years ago Captain Hiram’s was just a little joint for the local fishers to dock and stock up at while getting a bite to eat. Today that ‘little joint’ is a local resort that beckons visitors as far away as London, and maybe further. Hiram’s Resort has indoor and outdoor dining and entertainment, gift shops and 70 guest rooms - all with more to come. At Hiram’s you’ve got choices, and I don’t mean just soup or salad. Are you going to come down for the evening or kick off your shoes and stay a while? Sitting outside or in? This stage, or that stage? Steak or seafood? - Now that I’ve overloaded you with all of your options, I’ll reel you in with the details. Hiram’s Entertainment Manager, Jan Taylor took my dining friend and I on the grand tour of Hiram’s and it’s impressive how far they have come over the years and since the hurricanes devastated the resort in 2004. It took them six months to fully recover and Jan says it would have taken longer without the help and determination of Hiram’s entire staff. There is the hotel, which has fairly large rooms and is just a short crawl from the restaurant; the Sand Bar, which is located outside and has a large and a small stage for live bands; the restaurant, the marina, the gift shop and the banquet room. My dining partner and I elected the night-out option as opposed to staying overnight. We also chose to sit in the restaurant. The Sand Bar is a great place to eat though — especially if you are a smoker! You don’t have to wait to be seated and you get to experience a real tropical dining area. Inside we still enjoyed the view of the river and the spirit of Hiram’s. We kicked off the night with some Jekel Late Harvest Johannesburg Riesling, a sweet and subtle wine that goes with any meal according to my taste. Once we saw the

new Crab and Shrimp Spring Rolls on the menu, our appetizer was destiny. The spring rolls were awesome and surprisingly ethnic for a riverside restaurant. The tightly wrapped goodies were filled with crab, shrimp, cellophane noodles, cabbage, carrots and spices and deep fried to a comfortable crisp. Don’t dare take a bite without trying the Cusabi sauce they’re served with! Oddly enough, the Asian treat put me in the mood for some good ol’ meat and potatoes and I chose to have the Chef’s special Petit Sirloin, which was served with a creamy bernaise, baked potato and steamed broccoli. Have you ever had a steak truffle? If not, give this a whirl because that meal just melts in your mouth. My dining companion chose another Chef special: Kabobs with beef and vegetables served over a bed of rice that were fall-off-the-skewer good.Hungry yet? If not, I’ll cast out some other tempting dishes that’ll surely hook you. How about some Grouper Rockefeller: a dish with fried grouper topped with spinach, bacon, onion, garlic and hollandaise sauce? Stuffed Flounder anyone? They’ve got it and it’s filled with their signature crabmeat stuffing. The selection is vast and they’ve definitely thought up something for everyone: Boursin Chicken, Stuffed Soft Shell Crab, Salads, Sandwiches—oh, and don’t forget Dessert! It’s amazing to see how much Captain Hiram’s has grown over the years. They’ve recently hired a new executive chef, Keith Lewis, and a new mananger, Jim Bevenour. Jan says there will be some changes, like a Soup Du Jour, daily specials and new additions to the menu, but it won’t change the spirit that has stuck with Hiram’s through the years.

Forty years ago in the small town of Grant, Ozzie’s Crab house was born. Arthur “Ozzie” Alexander and his wife opened the restaurant back in 1966

and served local crab he caught from the dock across the Old Dixie Highway. He never used any salt in his kitchen because it tainted the true taste.

Keith Lewis is the new Executive Chef at Captain Hiram’s and I can say from tasting his meals he

won’t let you down (ok, I’ll stop with the Eagles puns now). He has been in the Culinary Arts field for 11 years now and is looking forward to yet another adventure at Captain Hiram’s.

Keith was born in Lakewood, Colorado and has traveled a lot throughout his life. It wasn’t until he was in his late 20’s that he decided to pursue his love of cooking and attend Florida Culinary Institute in West Palm and graduated with two specialized associate degrees: Culinary Arts and Food and Beverage Management. His early childhood memories of cooking take him back to when he was 10 years old: “My mother and father would go squid jigging and I would help clean and fry the squid for the whole family.” Keith said. “Around the same age we (he and his family) would take summer vacations to Estes Park, Colorado. My Grandmother Nini and I would prepare Lasagna for family and friends.” As an adult he credits his parents for supporting him in his journey through Culinary Arts School, as well as a Chef he met shortly after graduation in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “He gave many opportunities to learn more and guidance to be a better well rounded chef,” Keith added. After finishing school he worked in Wyoming for three years during the summer and took winter jobs in places like Scottsdale, Arizona; Beaver Creek, Colorado and Key Largo, Florida. But after three years of traveling Keith said he wanted to settle down, so he took a job at the Rye Town Hilton just north of Manhattan. “I have been very blessed to work in the places I have because they all were amazing times and learning experiences,” Keith said, adding that traveling as often as possible and absorbing everything you can from people in the field helps to make a good and well rounded Chef. “This is a learning profession and you never stop learning.” Keith’s cooking philosophy is simple. Great food and great service makes repeat customers. He believes in standardized recipes within an establishment so that visitors can count on the food being the same quality each time they visit. For a great meal, Keith says, you need a couple of things - fresh ingredients, great atmosphere, a nice wine or tropical drink and maybe that special someone. Contemporary American cuisine is what Keith enjoys cooking—of course he always adds his own pizzazz. “I enjoy using a variety of peppers and spices and infused oils that really enhance the foods.” Keith says he is excited to be on board with a great

brevard HEALTHHealth-Guru Hagen Panton:

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS - NO HAIR!

I keep hearing all these ads for laser hair removal on the radio and it made me wonder. Laser hair removal

would be the perfect present this holiday season. I interviewed one of to the best dermatologists in town to get the scoop on laser hair removal. Dr Anita Saluja at MIMA Dermatology. If you have any more questions, call her at 242-8790 Ext. 208.

Whyaresomepeoplehairierthanothers? The amount of hair you have is influenced by your ethnic group, your family genetics, and your hormones. Rarely, medical conditions can also make you hairier than others. For the past 20,000 years, since the time of cavemen, almost all people everywhere have unwanted hair and struggle with how to get rid of it. The good news is that laser hair removal can easily help.

Howdoeshairgrow? Hair has a cycle of growth. There is a growing phase, a transition phase, and a resting phase. When an old hair is near the end of the resting phase, a new hair in the growing phase develops, forcing the old hair out and starting the cycle over again. Laser hair removal can only permanently affect hair in the growing phase. That’s why multiple treatments are recommended.

Whatareourotheroptionsforremovinghair? Tweezing hair on a man’s back or woman’s bikini line would be impractical – it would be hard to reach and take hours. Waxing is painful. Shaving would be quicker, but can cause irritation and constantly needs to be repeated. Depilatory creams are messy and smell.

Howlongdoesittaketogetridofunwantedhair? The time it takes depends on how you are removing the hair and the area you are treating. Luckily, laser hair removal takes anywhere from 10 minutes for underarms to under an hour for your full legs. A series of 6 treatments is recommended, usually every 1 to 3 months. Maintenance treatments may be needed once or twice a year. After each treatment, hair growth is slowed down and a certain percentage of hairs never grow back so results are seen quickly. The hair that does grow back is thinner and lighter in color.

Wherecanyouremovehairfrom? With laser hair removal, hair can be removed from anywhere, except underneath the eyebrows. Laser hair removal is not ideal for eyebrow shaping, but does work well to correct a “uni-brow” appearance. Popular areas to treat include women’s facial hair, bikini line hair, underarm hair, and men’s back hair. Arms, legs, and other body hair can also be treated.

Very light, very fine, and white hairs cannot be treated. Your skin should be lighter than your hair, and if your hair is thicker or darker, more permanent results are achieved. Best not to tan before treatments so winter is the perfect time!

Whatproceduredoyouusetoremovehair? A typical session starts out with a pre-procedure consultation. Then, we apply a topical anesthetic cream to decrease temporary pain associated with the procedure. Eye goggles are given to wear for protection. Clear gel is applied to the skin. The laser looks like a computer with a cord connected to a handpiece. The handpiece moves along the skin. The handpiece produces pulses of specially filtered light. The pigment in the hair absorbs these pulses. The heat generated loosens the hair and disables the mechanism responsible for growing new hair. Some redness occurs, but resolves within the day. There is no pain after treatment. Sun protection of treated area is advised. The next treatment occurs whenever regrowth of hair appears, usually in 1 to 3 months.

Howdoesthehairstayawayaftertheprocedure?Whatarepossiblesideeffects? The heat created by the laser and absorbed by the hair follicle damages or destroys it. Laser hair removal has advanced since it was first developed in 1996 and results are better than ever. Possible side effects include blistering, scabbing, pigment (or color) changes in the skin, and very, very rarely, scarring. With newer machines and careful treatments, risks can be minimized.

Whoisthebestcandidate? The best candidate has unwanted hair, and wants to save time and hassle involved with other hair removal methods. He or she is well-informed and asks questions. He or she follows instructions and keeps their follow-up appointments. As we discussed, ideally, the skin is not tanned and the hair is not light or white.

Whatistheadvantageofdoinglaserhairremovalatadermatologist’s office? Dermatologists have trained for many years, specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of skin, hair, and nails. We continue to further our education and skill in these areas, including laser hair removal. We can make sure your hair growth is normal for you and not due to an underlying medical condition. We can work with you to minimize side effects and maximize results. We can also work with you with other skin issues such as wrinkles and develop a relationship for life long skin care.

Except for short jobs when she was young, D.X. Ross has never been employed. Early on, she

thought of herself as unemployable – she just knew she would have chafed at the restrictions traditional employment would have placed on her. That doesn’t mean she hasn’t worked. An artist with boundless energy, Ross has sailed her ship through diverse artistic waters, mastering several media, and she has created beautiful pieces of art along the way.

It started in upstate New York where Ross grew up. As a young child, she drew trees – not with leaves as others did, but she drew them after the leaves had fallen. She enjoyed the blending of the grays and whites and showing all the detail of the branches leading to offshoots and then to progressively smaller branches. The monochromatic detail fascinated her then, and you can see the carry-over of that fascination in the intricate enameling on the pieces of jewelry she creates. Ross started in pen and ink and studied printmaking at the University of Buffalo. While working on her bachelor’s of fine arts degree, she was influenced by Bill Helwig, one of the country’s foremost enamelists. He directed the craft center at the university. He is especially known for Grisaille, a style of finely detailed monochromatic painting where shades of gray are achieved when successive layers of white are applied over a black background. The technique dates back to the 13th Century. Because Ross was a fan of monochromatic art, she took a class from one of Helwig’s students. She loved it. As a result, she began applying the Grisaille technique to her enamel work.

Brevard Live December 2006 - 65

After she finished school, Ross moved to San Francisco and started making jewelry in the studio in her apartment. She participated in the street artist program there and made a good living. She speaks fondly of her apartment where she could rest her eyes on the Twin Peaks when they grew tired from the fine Grisaille work. Ross returned to New York City for an art show at Lincoln Center. As a result of selling everything on her first trip, she decided to become bi-coastal and to frequent the New York shows yearly. Later, Ross expanded her itinerary of art shows to include Florida after her mother moved here in 1978. Soon, she started spending more and more time on the East coast. Finally, she decided to move to Philadelphia to attend the Tyler School of Art in pursuit of a master’s of fine arts in metalsmithing. Ross admits she was self-taught in metalsmithing and went to Tyler to learn how to do things faster and to refine her skills. She wanted to make her metalwork look more distinctive and dimensional. She certainly accomplished her goal. In the mid-80s, Ross gave up living in California and bought her current home in Melbourne Beach where plants dominate her yard, making a serene environment of vegetation that blends with the artistic cottage décor of her home. Ross’s artistic emphasis has been mainly on jewelry. It is the staple by which she has earned a living. She says that because she can do so much with jewelry, she has always liked it best. Over time, her work became more abstracted. That pleases her because it causes viewers to have to use their imaginations. Ross shares her art with the world in many different ways. She teaches classes to pass her art on to others. In January 2007, she’ll teach metalsmithing in Southern California for the MASSC Metal Arts Guild. In March, she’ll be teaching a class at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, called “Grisaille Enamel – Shades of Detail.” In June, she’ll be teaching a class tentatively called, “Links and Linkages” at John C. Campbell Folk School. Ross also has shared her art and creativity through writing. She wrote a chapter highlighting the Grisaille techniques for the book The Art of Fine Enameling by Karen L. Cohen. And, her work has been exhibited in many venues throughout the country, such as the Susan Cummins Gallery in California, the Mobilia Gallery in Massachusetts, and the Oakland Museum. In 2003, her jewelry was part of the “Jewels and Gems” exhibit presented by the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her piece in the show, entitled “Tides of the Centuries” was described as telling a personal narrative. The terror that struck us all on September 11, 2001, changed many of our lives. Ross admits that it had a profound effect on her and her art. It shook our world, reminding us that all is not permanent. As a result, Ross turned to more immediate forms of art, made of less permanent materials. She turned to pottery, china painting, and she began to make

what she calls “wish sticks.” The latter are branches, perhaps framing the head of a whimsical character made of pottery. The owner can hang the wish sticks on the wall or use the single-stick variety, decorated with mosaics, to divine a wish. One of Ross’s current passions is china painting. Initially, she took it up because her mother picked up some china paints at a yard sale. She joined the Horse Creek Pottery where she works on her china painting pieces and where she creates her pottery characters. Ross said that she has such a fondness for the china painting that she will continue to place emphasis on it. It is evident that Ross enjoys trying new things, so we can look forward to continuing to be surprised and delighted by her creative touch in the Brevard art world. Watch for her at ArtWorks in Eau Gallie each year. She participates as an artist and works throughout the year on the committee. She volunteered her time to be on the panel for the State Interdisciplinary Grants for Artists. Also, she belongs to the Strawbridge Art League and often enters her works into the juried exhibits presented by that organization To see some of Ross’s work, visit the Melbourne Beach Library in December. To contact D.X. Ross, email her at [email protected]
