Welcome to St. Rose
This community was established by Bishop
George Lucas, former Bishop of Springfield, in the
fall of 2008 for the celebration of the extraordinary
form of the Roman Missal (Traditional Latin
Mass). If you are not familiar with this rite, do not
hesitate to ask for help from the ushers.
To follow the liturgy on Sunday, you need a red
booklet (pews) and the Sunday proper leaflet
(vestibule). For sung Masses, you may also wish to
take a hymnal (vestibule) to sing along.
On weekdays, you need a Latin-English Missal.
They are available at Poppe’s in Quincy & St. John
Fisher Bookstore in Jacksonville (see back of bulle-
tin). You may also follow the ordinary in the red
booklet.
Do not hesitate to make the responses along with
the altar boys, if you are able to do so.
To join the St. Rose of Lima Chaplaincy, please
call the parish office at 217-222-2511 or mail one
of the cards found in the back of the Church.
On Sundays and Holy Days, please come and
join us after Mass in the Church hall for coffee
and donuts.
"I bring to you news of great joy: Today
in the town of David a Savior has been born to
you. He is Christ the Lord"
St. Leo the Great in a famous sermon for Christ-
mas exclaimed himself: "Let us rejoice!" It would be unlaw-
ful to be sad today. No one is excluded from sharing in
this joy. "A Savior has been born unto us."
We do not celebrate at Christmas the coming of an
ordinary messenger of God. The prophets of the Old Tes-
tament until John the Baptist were chosen by God to bring
God's revelation, the Word of God, to mankind. We cele-
brate the coming of the Son of God in the flesh. We are
so used to these words that we do not realize any more
their full meaning. God did not content Himself to visit us,
to appear to us, to manifest himself to us, but he assumed
our very own human nature, our own flesh, body and soul,
he became one of us, like us in all things but sin.
God became a man so that not only he would teach
us who he is by his teaching but also he would reveal the
mystery of God through his own life and being. He be-
came man so that he would show us the way to heaven not
only by an abstract teaching but by his own example. If we
want to know what we should do to please God we need go
no further that to look at Our Lord and see how he acts
and reacts during his earthly life. If we want to know who is
God, let us look at Christ, he is the human icon of God.
God became man so that we may become like
God. Our Lord Jesus Christ did not content himself to
atone for our sins, he brought us, he gave us God's life it-
self, he made us children of God by giving us the super-
natural life of sanctifying grace. When we receive sanctify-
ing grace the day of our baptism or when we are sanctified
again through a good confession, we receive a sharing of
God's nature and life and the Blessed Trinity inhabits in us.
The same Pope Leo the Great exclaims himself:
"Be aware O Christians of your dignity! You have been
made partakers of the Divine Nature." God became a child
so that we may become children of God. Let us remind
ourselves often that although we are sinners and should
implore the mercy of God, we have been made children of
God and heirs of Heaven, we have received a sharing in
God's nature and we must live accordingly.

Christmas is a Holy Day of obligation. To satisfy the
obligation, attendance at one of the three Masses is suf-
ficient. If one attends more than one Mass, one may
receive twice Holy Communion. Because this Friday is
a Holy Day of Obligation and a Solemnity, it is not a
day of penance. So no abstinence or other penance is
required. The same is true for Friday, January 1, 2010.
