2- MARSHALL MESSENGER - WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2014 - MARSHALL, MO
TheKowalewskis two dogshad died in a two-yearperiod, and Chris Kowa-lewski was reluctant toget another to avoid thepotential heartache.
“My husbandworks the night shiftthough, and I was hav-ing a hard time sleepingat night since our lastdog passed. I startedlooking at Petfinder andcried every time Ilooked at all the pho-tos,” the Oswego, IL,woman says.
One dog,Nigel, caught hereye. Placing Paws ofIllinois in Libertyvillehad posted him onPetfinder. Shelooked for his listingagain the next day,but he was gone.
“About aweek later, I was stilllooking, and there hewas, back on thesite,” Kowalewski says. She arranged to meet
him. “They brought himinto the room, heflopped on my feet androlled on his back. Iknew instantly he wouldbe coming home withus.
“My son washaving loyalty/guilt is-sues about loving an-other dog,” she adds.“He wouldn’t pet him orpay much attention tohim on the car ride
home. Once we gothome though, it was im-possible not to love
Nigel.”He was starved
for attention. When theywent to buy him sometoys, he flopped on hisback in front of everyonethey met. These dayshe’s getting the love heneeds.
Nigel has be-come the family’s officialball shagger, a talentthey discovered whenher son was doing some
batting practice inthe backyard. “Thefirst day he did that,”Kowalewski says,“Nigel chased everyball and gatheredthem in a pile, thenwaited for the nextone to be hit.”
She wonderswhy he ended uphomeless becausehe was trained andhad good manners.Someone’s loss, however, was theKowalewskis gain
because Nigel is a full-fledged member of theirfamily now.

Hitting a potholecan be more than a mo-mentary jolt. While thetires and wheels shouldbe visually inspected assoon as possible, youshould know there couldbe damage to the steer-ing, suspension andalignment systems thatyou can’t see.
To help deter-mine if hitting a potholehas damaged your vehi-cle, watch for thesewarning signs:
• Loss of con-trol, swaying when mak-ing routine turns, bottoming out on citystreets or bouncing ex-cessively on roughroads.
These indicatethat key safety-relatedsystems —the steeringand suspension—mayhave been damaged. They largely determineyour car’s ride and han-dling. Keycompo-nents areshocksand struts, the steer-ingknuckle,ball joints, the steer-ing rack orbox, bear-ings, sealsand hubunits, andtie rodends.
•Pulling inone direc-tion, in-stead ofmaintain-ing astraight
path, and uneven tirewear. These mean analignment problem.
Proper wheelalignment is importantfor safe handling andlong-lasting tires.
• Low tire pres-sure, bulges or blisterson the sidewalls, ordents in the rim. Theseproblems should bechecked out as soon aspossible as tires are thecritical connection be-tween your car and theroad.
“If you’ve hit apothole and suspect thatthere may be damage tothe tires, wheels, steer-ing and suspension, orwheel alignment,” saidRich White, executivedirector, Car Care Coun-cil, “it’s worth having aprofessional techniciancheck out the car andmake any necessary re-pairs.”
As a generalrule of thumb, he ad-
vises, steering and sus-pension systems shouldbe checked at leastonce a year and wheelsshould be aligned at thesame interval. Motoristswho drive in areaswhere potholes arecommon should be pre-pared to have these sys-tems checked morefrequently.
The Car CareCouncil is the source ofinformation for the “BeCar Care Aware” con-sumer education cam-paign promoting thebenefits of regular vehi-cle care, maintenanceand repair to con-sumers.
For a copy ofthe council’s “Car CareGuide” or for more infor-mation, visit www.car-care.org.
Potholes occurwhen water permeatesthe pavement—usually
through acrack fromwear andtear of traf-fic—andsoftens thesoil be-neath it,creating adepressionin the sur-face of thestreet.

Outdoor living, barbecues and thepromise of spendingmore time outside withfriends and family aresome of the many perksof spring and summer.
However, therecan be a downside towarm weather that canruin even the most per-fect get-together: bitinginsects.
Mar Jennings, home and garden expertand best-selling authorof “Life on Mar’s: A FourSeason Garden” and“Life on Mar’s: CreatingCasual Luxury,” haspartnered with Dyna-trap® to bring you thehottest tips and trendsfor summer 2014 enter-
taining.• It’s Never Too
Early to Prepare: Mos-quito populations starthatching when tempera-tures reach 45 degrees,so start early when itcomes to ridding youryard of these pests.
• Make it Magi-cal with Outdoor Light-ing: The right lightingcan help keep bugsaway. Try a fire pit; itprovides the perfectamount of light and thesmoke naturally repelsmosquitoes. Another tipis to change your out-door bulbs from white toyellow. Yellow bulbs areless visible to mostbugs.
• With Color,Lighter Is Bet ter: For keyoutdoor pieces such as
seat cushions, lighter isbetter. Not only will theystay crisp lookinglonger, mosquitoes areless at tracted to lightcolors. Jennings likesthe Pan-tonecolor ofthe year, bold Ra-diant Or-chid, touse as afeaturedor accentcolor thissummer.
•BeautifyYour Yard: Tidying upthe yard before a partywill not only impressguests, but cutting thegrass and drainingsources of stagnant
water will also decreasethe likelihood of bugs.Include plants likemarigolds in your gar-den as they not onlybeautify your space, but
also help repel mosqui-toes.
