    Champagne Bollinger

    Bollinger epitomizes what is often referred to as the British style

    of Champagne: full-bodied, powerful and rich, more appropriate

    at the dinner table than as an aperitif, and dominated by Pinot

    Noir. The houses flagship Special Cuve, which is typically austere

    on release, features mature notes of toffee and toasted bread due to

    the fact that a portion of the wine is fermented in cask and to the

    inclusion of older reserve wines in the blend.

    60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier

    Pale, bright pink. Expressive aromas o resh red berries, tangerine and

    toasty lees, with a suave oral nuance. Deeply pitched but quite energetic,

    oering pure strawberry and cherry preserve avors underscored by

    zesty citrus and mineral notes. Becomes richer and smokier with air

    and nishes with excellent clarity, thrust and persistence. For such a

    powerul wine this Champagne is impressively lithe and incisive.

    Tis oral Champagne oers hints o malt and whole-grain toast,

    along with avors o date, spiced plum and dried cherry. Tis shows

    ne balance and texture, and a mouthwatering nish o reshly ground

    spices. Drink now through 2016.

    Beautiully pale in color, this is serious ros. Its rich and dry character and

    its red cherry and raspberry avors are tied together by the nest acidity.

    addition on 5-10% reserve wines

    A lovely, balanced Champagne, with mineral and toast notes accenting

    avors o quince, green pear, white peach and verbena. Backed by rm

    acidity, this shows impressive texture and nesse. Like a mosaic, all the

    pieces come together to make a beautiul whole. Drink now through

    2020.

    Richness is all in this latest release o Special Cuve, a complex and

    supple blend based on red grapes (60 percent pinot noir and 15 percent

    meunier with the balance in chardonnay). Structured by reserve wines

    aged in magnum bottles, this wines texture unolds with layers o avor,

    rom subtle Marcona almond to dark-toned apricot and brighter lemon.

    Its creamy, saturated and delicious, balanced or current drinking and

    built to age.

    91 | Robert Parkers Wine Advocate

    Te NV Brut Special Cuvee is abulous. Hints o pears, pastry crust

    and hazelnut lead to an expansive core o ruit. Tere is plenty o the

    signature Bollinger oxidative style in this rich, enveloping Champagne.

    Once again the Special Cuvee is one o the best Champagnes in its

    price range. Tis is Lot L114501. Disgorged April 26, 2011. Anticipated

    maturity: 2011-2015. Bollinger is o course one o the great names in

    Champagne. Te Special Cuvee is typically one o my avorite wines in

    its price range...Bollinger is unique among Champagne houses in that

    the reserve wines are all bottled in magnum and with natural cork, a

    huge, labor-intensive eort.

    90 | Stephen anzers International Wine CellarVivid yellow. Poached pear, singed orange and buttered toast on

    the ragrant nose. Broad and eshy, with very good depth to its ripe

    orchard ruit and honey avors. A zesty note o citrus pith adds li and

    a rereshingly bitter edge to the long, gently toasty nish. Tis hey

    Champagne would probably be better with rich oods than by itsel, at

    least to my taste. (12/ 2011)

    Domaine Mule Blanche Paul Jaboulet Crozes Hermitage 2008

    90 | Stephen anzer

    Greenish yellow. Te nose is strongly reminiscent o Puligny-Montrachet,

    showing scents o orange, lemon rind, white owers and smoky lees,

    along with a strong mineral undertone. Racy citrus avors give way to

    deeper orchard ruit and candied oral qualities in the middle palate,

    with a subtle smokiness adding complexity. Te nish is tightly ocused

    and impressively persistent, especially or the vintage.

    Isole e Olena Chardonnay oscana IG 200892 | Robert Parker

    Te 2008 Chardonnay Collezione De Marchi is a model o elegance

    and crystalline purity. Clean, mineral notes rame varietal ruit in this

    subdued Chardonnay. Tis graceul, elegant white seems to have more

    than enough stufng to develop nicely over the next ew years. I would

    be tempted to cellar a ew bottles beyond that. Isole e Olena seems to y

    under the radar, but insiders know better. Proprietor Paolo De Marchi

    cras some o the most engaging wines in all o uscany, and Italy or

    that matter. Drink until 2018.

    Capo Martino in Ruttaris Silvio Jermann Friuli IG 2005

    Te 2005 Capo Martino is a slender version o this wine. Perumed

    aromatics lead to an expressive core o ripe ruit as this medium-bodiedwhite opens up in the glass. oday the oak is especially prominent, and

    I am not sure the wine possesses enough plumpness to provide balance.

    Calera Chardonnay Central Coast 2010

    91 | Wine & Spirits

    Josh Jensen makes this wine rom a collection o vineyard sources in

    Monterey and Santa Clara counties. Its bright and citrusy with resh

    scents o Mandarin orange and lemon, a lusty undertow o smoke

    pulling back on all the ruit. Clean and vinous, this is a zesty white or

    pan-roasted sand dabs.

    Clos Pegase Mitsukos Vineyard Chardonnay Carneros Napa Valley 2010

    91 | Wine & Spirits

    Intense and richly avored, with a mix o ripe g, honeydew melon

    and oral scents. Raw in texture, but should smooth out. Snappy, well-

    balanced and complex on the nish. Drink now through 2018.

    Frogs Leap Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2011

    Tis is a dry wine o substantial scale that carries itsel well, as it retains

    a delicacy to complement ood, not overwhelm. Te alcohol is kept low,

    the acidity high, and the avors crisp and rereshing. Just released. No

    ratings available yet but this label consistently scores 90+.

    Silverado Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2009

    Te 2009 vintage was a great one or this bottling, which was too sweetin 2008. Tis ones more like the 05, only richer and better. It eels nice

    and crisp and dry, with polished, complex citrus ruit, white ower,

    peach and mineral avors. Editors Choice

    Eroica Riesling Columbia Valley 2010

    Eroica has put on racing stripes or the 2010 - a lean vintage with scents

    o lime and lemon, revealing a mineral spine rom the aroma straight

    through to the nish. Aer a day the structure lengthens a bit and the

    avors relax into lemon rom lime, but the wine still has plenty o drive.

    Built or the cellar.

    93 | Cellar Selection | Wine & Spirits

    Eroica has a proven ability to age; in act it needs at least a hal decade

    in the cellar to show its real strengths. ight and packed with primary

    ruit avors o lime and peach, this beautiully proportioned wine has

    perceptible sweetness but plenty o natural acidity. Lively and resh

    today, but best given a ew more years in the cellar.

    Te 2010 Eroica Riesling had just been bottled when I tasted it. It displays

    similar aromatics but with more elevated acidity, a characteristic o the

    vintage that provides considerable rereshment in the nish.

    mineral and chalk, dancing lightly through the open-weave, o-dry nish.

    Deumayn rez Malbec Reserva Mendoza 2007

    Bodegas Deumayens 2007 rez Reserva Malbec was aged in 33% newFrench oak or 12-14 months. A glass-coating opaque purple color,

    it oers up an alluring nose o spice box, mineral, smoke, and black

    cherry. Medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, it is mouth-coating,

    savory, and concentrated. Give it 2-3 years to ully blossom and drink it

    rom 2012 to 2022.

    Iscay Merlot Malbec by rapiche Mendoza 2006

    50% Merlot, 50% Malbec

    Iscay means two in Quechuan and highlights the concept thought

    behind this wine: two varietals, two vineyards, two people, rapiches

    main winemaker Daniel Pi and Viticulturist Marcelo Belmonte,

    who worked together to conceive this unique Argentinian wine. Te

    Malbec contributes its deep red violet color with mature plum notes

    and generous tannis. Te Merlots provides nesse and complexity with

    black ruits, spices and cassis notes. Te blend during one year and a

    hal in new oak barrels completes a remarkable amalgam o avors.

    Manos Malbec by rapiche Mendoza 2004

    A very rich and so wine made rom hand-squeezed Malbec grapes.

    Teres a ton o oak on it, which comes out as coconut and cream on the

    nose. Te palate is also creamy, with mocha, sweet blackberry and udge

    avors. Cola, coconut, coee and other hedonistic, dark, masculine

    accents make this a un and interesting wine to drink now. Best on its

    own or with meat.

    Marchiori & Barraud Cuartel #2 Malbec Mendoza 2007

    Aggressive smelling early on but then it settles on classy raspberry, cassis

    and herbs. Te palate is very healthy, juicy, rich and big, but the avors

    o dark berry ruit are subtle and smooth. Chunky, sweet and ripe on

    the nish.

    Elderton Estate Shiraz Barossa Valley 2008

    Bright purple. Intensely perumed nose displays resh blackberry,

    lavender, star anise and vanillin oak. Bright and resh on entry, with

    lively acidity giving li and spine to the black and blue ruit avors.Finishes long and sappy, with lingering smokiness and excellent clarity.

    Miguel orres Conde de Superunda Curic Valley 2004

    Tis has character, delivering powerul currant paste, braised g and

    hoisin sauce avors laced with notes o charcoal, tobacco and hot stone.

    Oers a strong graphite edge on the nish too, which has some toast to

    shed. Dense and powerul. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenre, Monastrell

    and empranillo. Best rom 2011 through 2014.

    Via Santa Rita Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley 2007

    Te 2007 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) spent 15 months in

    95% new French oak. oasty oak, earthy minerals, exotic spices, incense,

    tobacco, and assorted black ruits lead to a ripe, rich, pleasure-bent wine.

    Give this nicely proportioned, lengthy eort a minimum o 4-5 years o

    additional cellaring and drink it rom 2016 to 2027.

    Chateau eyssier St Emilion 2007

    Fresh, medium-bodied, earthy avors redolent o notes o cherries,

    black currants, and loamy soil emerge rom this elegant, charming,

    round 2007. Drink until 2017.

    Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny Borgogne 2009

    From their estates usual ar-ung assemblage o crus. I did not taste this

    years dedicated bottling rom Les Baudes), Drouhins 2008 Chambolle-

    Musigny 1er Cru boasts ripe, resh cherry and strawberry tinged with

    cinnamon and smoky black tea, suggestions o leather and orest oorbecoming more prominent as part o a satisyingly long, spicy, sweetly-

    ruited nish. I would anticipate at least 7-9 years o interest here, but

    there looks to be no risk in enjoying some young, too.

    Louis Latour Volnay En Chevret 1er Cru Borgogne 2009

    Intense dark ruby red with a mouth-watering bouquet o plums,

    strawberries, liquorice and peppermint this Volnay 1er Cru is attractively

    long on the nish with some tannins which still need smoothening out.

    Tis red has some esh to its bones, with avors o black cherry, raspberry,

    peppery spice and mineral. Firm nish. Best rom 2015 through 2030.

    Talabert Crozes Hermitage Paul Jaboulet Crozes Hermitage 2006

    Inky purple. Suave raspberry and blackberry aromas complicated by

    subtle cured meat and olive qualities. Brighter red ruits on the palate,

    especially raspberry, with silky tannins adding structure. Impressively

    elegant, resh and incisive. Tis is really graceul.

    Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano oscana 2008

    Te 2008 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows abulous intensity in

    its dark ruit. It is a beautiully balanced Vino Nobile that oers superb

    depth wedded to a powerul sense o structure that should allow the wine

    to drink well or a number o years. Te Vino Nobile is 90% Sangiovese

    and 10% Canaiolo aged in a combination o cask and barrel. Tis is a

    abulous eort. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

    Te ne perume o Sangiovese carries through this wine accentuating

    the initial tart cherry scent and the cherry tomato bite o the nish.

    Teres errous, mineral-inected tannin to keep it ocused. An elegant

    wine on a small scale, this is ready to drink with pasta in a pork ragu.

    Cascina Bongiovanni, Casatiglione Falletto, Barolo DOCG 2006

    4 Stars | Decanter

    Shy aromas o vanilla, caramel, plum, brine and cinnamon. Youthulpalate showing resh apple, raspberry and liquorice with rm oak

    tannins. Approachable but with Barolos classic muscular nish.

    Castello Banf Poggio alla Mura Brunello di Montalcino 2006

    Tis is so balanced and rened and polished. I love the berries and

    blackberries and owers on the nose. Full bodied, with super well-

    integrated tannins and a long, long nish. So much there. Racy and

    gorgeous. Give it three to our years to come even more together.

    Te 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura emerges rom the

    glass with a burst o tar, smoke, licorice, earthiness and wild cherries.

    Te sheer intensity and muscle o the ruit saturates the palate rom start

    to nish. Te 2006 is an especially round, seductive Poggio alle Mura. A

    ew more years in bottle should help the rm tannins soen. Te Poggio

    alle Mura was vinied in steel and aged predominantly (90%) in French

    oak barrels.

    Castello Banf Rosso di Montalcino 2008

    Medium-bodied, with blackberry and oral avors galore and a goodamount o jammy ruit. Fresh with a medium ruity nish.

    Castello Bans bright and ruit-orward Rosso di Montalcino would

    make a perect match to grilled lamb chops or roast pork. Te wine

    is simple and genuine yet the reshness o the ruitwith cherry,

    blackberry and raspberry overtonesmakes it easy and un to drink.

    San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino 200591 | Wine Enthusiast

    Wild berry and orest aromas open the nose o this clean and direct

    Brunello. Teres very nice purity and intensity here and the wine

    showcases layers o red ruit, plum, spice, leather and rose petal. Te

    silky and smooth moutheel would work with meat dishes or hearty

    pasta.

    Pesquera Reserva Alejandro Fernndez Ribera del Duero 2007

    Te 2007 Pesquera Reserva oers up a more complex aromatic

    array o balsam wood, espresso, lavender, incense, exotic spices, andassorted black ruits. Savory, ripe, and avorul, it is in need o a bit

    more concentration, likely the result o the vintage. It will benet rom

    another 1-2 years o cellaring and drink well through 2022.

    90 Stephen anzers International Wine Cellar

    Ruby-red. Musky aromas o berry skin and cherry, with complicating

    notes o dried owers and herbs. Firm on entry, then eshier in the

    middle, oering sweet red ruit avors and a subtle peppery quality.

    Sweeter on the anise-tinged nish, where the cherry element lingerswith good intensity. Tis will be drinking well soon, or could even be

    enjoyed now with a little aeration.

    Lar de Paula Cepas Viejas Rioja 2005

    5 Stars | Gold Medal | Decanter

    Plum, sweet spice and cassis notes. Juicy mulberry and bilberry palate

    with dark, spicy, clove and bitter coee oak. An inviting and elegant

    wine.

    Melis Priorat DOG 2005

    Ruby red. Bright raspberry, kirsch- and mineral-dominated bouquet is

    jazzed up by incense, oral oil and Asian spices. Seductively sweet and

    pliant, with deep red and blue ruit liqueur avors and supple tannins.

    Clings tenaciously on the strikingly long, silky nish, with the oral

    qualities echoing.

    Melis is a project backed by industry olks rom Caliornia, but this

    blend o old-vines Grenache along with Carignan, Syrah and Caberenet

    Sauvignon is very European. Its heady but well balanced, with smoothedges and not too much ery attitude, roughness or scratchy tannins.

    Its orward and big-boned, but theres enough creamy richness to make

    it riendly. Needs plenty o air time now; should hold well or ve-plus

    years. (04/09) 91 points Wine & Sprits: Balanced at the heights o

    superripeness, this wine tastes o gs and chestnuts, o the warmnth o

    alcohol and the wild stoniness o Priorat tannin. Its massive and strong,

    set to match something equally powerul, sucah as wild boar roasted

    with dried ruit.

    Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2008

    to be one o the most compelling values in Caliornia Cabernet. In 2008

    the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and

    2% Cabernet Franc.

    bottling, not as long lived, but still deserving o 6-8 years in a cool cellar.

    revealing a dense ruby/purple color as well as lovely black currant ruit

    this blend o 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot

    has tamed the mountain rusticity and oers rich ruit and oral avors

    that have more in common with the Stags Leap appellation.
