OUR PHILOSOPHY
We work only in the development sector
We take on assignments only if they have an impact component
All our researchers engage in fieldwork across the length and breadth of India
We are believers in the mixed methods approach: quantitative + qualitative research
THE PROBLEM THE SOLUTION THE PATH
OUR GOAL
Lack of data for informed
decision-making in the
development sector.
Understand the why and how
behind the decisions we take by
combining relevant data with
field insights to catalyze social
impact.
Relevant, reliable and authentic
data through qualitative and
quantitative research; keen
involvement of researchers
on-ground; inclusion of
technology such as CAPI and
UAV; engagement, training
and exchange of knowledge
with local field staff.

CHALLENGE SOLUTION
The missing piece: Lack of accurate and up-to-date geospatial data
This impedes:
• Research, intervention-planning
and evidence-based policymaking.
• Monitoring and planning of public
works, infrastructure and large-
scale resources.
Outline India, in partnership with Ideaforge, uses UAVs (drones) to build
detailed maps of intervention areas as an additional layer to qualitative and
quantitative survey data.
Thisenables:
• Topographical mapping; building DEM/DSM models
• Infrastructural and geospatial mapping
• Monitoring infrastructural projects and land use using KMZ and NVDI
datasets
• Visualizing & improving planning of interventions and policies
INNOVATIONS: I. Using UAVs for Research and M&E
Village orthomosaic with infrastructuralplotting Elevation profile around water-stagnant areasto
devise village drainageplans
INNOVATIONS: I. Use of UAV: Mapping Infrastructure
Towards Smart Villages
Satellite maps are mostly unavailable or available in little detail across
rural parts. UAVs can economize on resources, in terms of time &money
by improving geo-spatial data and enabling evidence-based policy
making.
• Central Bureau of Investigation Report (2015) found that India has close to
31 lakh NGOs - twice the number of schools and 250 times the number of
government hospitals.
• The bottom of the pyramid NGOs remain underfunded, lack resourcesfor
M&E, and thus lack credibility to seek funds.
This creates a vicious cycle limiting them from acquiring fundingfor
necessary growth
INNOVATIONS: II. TYM: Track Your Metrics

Comparing Differences In Child Health Outcomes By Religious Affiliation
Outline India investigated the relationship between childundernourishment
and religious affiliation in India.
Informed by in-depth interviews in urban and rural Kerala, with low and high
caste Hindu, Muslim and Protestant households, as well as religious leaders,
the study examined the relationship between religion and the high rate of
undernourishment among Indian children. Further, it shed light on women‘s
autonomy and their control over household finances, as well as their
preference for a male child according to social norms. The study provided
insight into the likely dietary restrictions encountered by a child in their early
growing years and their association with religious identity. This contributed to
findings about the rate of stunting and wasting in children, addressing the
concern that economic growth cannot be sustained without accompanying
improvements in health sector of young children.

Medical Institutions
This was a pioneering study in India exploring the existing practices of organ
donation from the perspective of organ donors‟ motivations as well as institutional
constraints in the organ donor industry.
For this study, Outline India undertook extensive secondary research into
historical developments in the organ transplant industry. In-depth interviews
were conducted with transplant surgeons and coordinators associated with
public and private hospitals including renowned specialists who have helped
in setting up the Transplant of Human Organs Act in India. These findings
were further probed through statistical analyses of responses, based on key
metrics. Through the insights gathered, recommendations were made to
address the problem of organ wastage in India.
