Dear Parents and Students Social Justice Sunday was celebrated on Sunday 25 September. The Australian Catholic Social Justice focus in 2011-12 is on Prisons and the Justice System. The Statement from the Catholic Bishops of Australia, titled Building Bridges, Not Walls: Prisons and the justice system, points out that between 1984 and 2008, while rates of crime either stayed steady or fell, the number of Australians in prison per 100,000 people almost doubled. The majority of Australian prisoners come from the most disadvantaged sections of the community: the underprivileged, those suffering from mental illness, and especially Indigenous people, who make up about 2.3 per cent of the Australian population but about a quarter of those in prison. The incarceration rate for young Indigenous people is even higher. The Statement celebrates the work of chaplains and all who work to bring hope and support to prisoners. Jesus Christ never neglected outcasts and criminals – in fact, he sought them out to bring them his message of salvation and redemption. Inspired by the message and ministry of Jesus, the bishops present us with five challenges: to confront fear campaigns about law and order; to address the social factors that contribute to crime; to maintain the dignity of prisoners; to help prisoners after release; and to seek practical alternatives to imprisonment. No crime can diminish the fact that we are all created in the image and likeness of God. (Source: Australian Catholic Social Justice Council) God, Our Creator, We acknowledge the ancestors and original owners of this land, a land of wealth and freedom, far horizons, mountains, forest and shining sand. Maker and spirit of earth and all creation, let your love possess our land and may we share in faith and friendship, the gifts unmeasured from your hand. We pray for all the imprisoned, those on the inside, whose confinement is obvious and those on the outside, whose imprisonment is subtler. We reach out in grace, knowing that human divisions are false, that we are not the innocent praying for the guilty or the right praying for the wrong, but people praying for people, the hurt remembering the hurt, the failure reaching out in love to the failure in a single community. We remember those who seek to change difficult life stories, midwives of hope and agents of grace. We remember and pray for the victims of crime on the outside, knowing that we do not have the luxury of black and white, the simple answer or the easy question, dreamless futures and nightmare pasts.

We remember and pray for the countless victims on the inside casualties of uneven playing fields and difficult starts, We remember the whole criminal justice system and its process, those caught up in it, those on every side and in every moment of it. We pray a blessing on all those who enter prison. We pray a blessing on all those who wait on the outside. We pray a blessing on the world community. Teach us to deal with each other with compassion. Keep all of us ever mindful of your law of love so that we may temper justice with mercy, exercise control with compassion. May our motives and our actions conform to your will and fulfil your purposes all the days of this life so that we may share in the life to come. Amen. 7 July 2011 Area 2 Long Bay New South Wales WELCOME We welcome Mrs Meg Logan and Mrs Libby Davies to the school as replacement teachers for Mrs Duncan who is on leave this term. We trust that their time at Loreto will be enjoyable and rewarding. We welcome back from leave Mrs Hedemann, Mrs O’Donoghue, Mrs Dowden and Mrs Siebert. CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the Year 9 students on their high levels of attainment in this year’s NAPLAN National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy tests. In all five categories (reading; writing; spelling; grammar and punctuation; and numeracy) 99-100% of the students achieved scores above the National Minimum Standard. A more detailed analysis will follow in due course. Loreto was pleased to receive special congratulations from Premier Anna Bligh who wrote “we have particularly noted your school’s consistently high performance in these tests and commend you and your staff for your commitment in helping students achieve these high level literacy and numeracy standards”.

CONDOLENCES To the family and friends of Mrs Maureen Botterill. Mrs Botterill, a former member of the teaching staff in the 1980’s, passed away last week. May she rest in God’s loving and eternal peace. Amen.

Yours sincerely

Are you a current Year 10 or 11 Drama student who is passionate about Drama? Would you like to share your passion with others? If you answered ‘Yes’ to these two questions and if you are continuing to study Drama in your final years of high school, then you should consider applying for the La Boite Theatre Company Ambassador Program. Ambassadors enjoy a year long relationship with La Boite Theatre Company that includes attending performances for free whenever you like, meeting the creative teams, special workshops, and more. Current Year 12 Drama students Emily Poncini and Megan Smart have been 2011 La Boite Theatre Ambassadors and have thoroughly

enjoyed the experience. A maximum of two students who apply per high school are selected. Details are as follows:

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

The La Boite Ambassadors program is back in 2012! Over the past three years the team at La Boite has been

privileged to form special relationships with over 440 high school and tertiary students through the Ambassadors

program. Through this program we have a unique opportunity to influence these bright young adults, expanding

their world view and broadening their experiences. In this time we have given away over 1217 free tickets, and welcomed over 2493 Ambas-

sador guests to our theatre, extending to them heavily discounted tickets for our Mainhouse Season. We are thrilled to announce that we

will once again invite 100 specially selected Year 11 & 12 students from QLD high schools to join the La Boite team in this special role.

What are La Boite Ambassadors?

theatre. You also introduce the work of La Boite to your friends and families, and act as advisers to the company by providing feedback and

new ideas. Ambassadors from previous years are not eligible

What are Ambassadors entitled to?

Attend each 2012 La Boite Mainhouse production for free, receive a free program, and meet the actors and creative team for a discussion after the show

Music News MSG Mega-Raffle Loreto students involved with either Music Tuition or Music Ensembles should today have received a bundle of 10 tickets to sell for the Mega-Raffle. If any student was away or did not get their tickets for any reason, could they please come to the music office to collect them

urgently? The Music Support Group provides funding for over $7000 worth of scholarships each year as well as frequently purchasing instruments and equipment for student use (in recent years this has included amp cases, a new baritone sax, new cymbals, a double bass, and a xylophone). These scholarships and purchases benefit ALL students in the Music Program by allowing the department to run ensembles with balanced instrumentation and adequate resources. However, this is only possible if we raise enough money each year to fund these expenses. The Music Trivia Night and the Mega-Raffle are the Music Support Group's two main fundraising activities each year. Could I please strongly encourage all music families to support this Raffle - if each family involved in the Music Program sells one ten-ticket booklet, we will raise approximately $4000, enabling scholarships to be offered for another year. Upcoming Performances: Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle - Will be performing at the School Fete for St Ita’s Catholic School (249 Gladstone Rd Dutton Park) on Sunday 16 October from 12 - 12:30 pm. Could all members of Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle please note this date in their diaries? Arrival time will be by 11:30 am and you will be free to leave at about 1 pm on the day. String Sextet - Is performing at the Women in Sport Breakfast at the Brisbane Convention Centre on the morning of Thursday 13 October. Students are to find their own way to the venue (please see Mr Langford urgently if this is a problem as we are happy to assist if required). You need to be in the venue by 6:10 am and will perform from 6:30 am to 7:15 am. Students will return to Loreto by taxi after the breakfast (directly after the performance for Guitar Ensemble girls) at approximately 9:30 am. Guitar Ensemble One - Will once again be hosting the ensemble from Churchie in a combined workshop/performance on the morning of Thursday 13 October. Please make sure that you arrive a little early at this rehearsal so that the event can run smoothly and on time! Rehearsal Changes for this week: Percussion Ensemble Two - Due to the Yr 10 camp and Yr 11 leadership days, your rehearsal will be on before school on Friday from 7 am - 8 am. Concert Band One – rehearsal this week will proceed AS NORMAL on Thursday afternoon this week. Only a few students will be away and Yr 11s will return in time and are expected to stay for rehearsal.

Live & Wired and Music Night - There have been some changes to which groups are performing at each of these concerts at the end of this year. Please take note of the following dates as it is expected that students make themselves available to perform when asked. Could parents please contact the Music Office urgently if these changes cause any difficulties?

This Week’s Draw - 5 October

Open A vs Brigidine at Brigidine (bus)

Open B vs All Hallows at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Spring Hill (bus)

Intermediate A vs MSM to be played on Monday 10th October at MSM (bus)

Intermediate B vs All Hallows at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Spring Hill (bus)

Junior A vs Mt Alvernia at Loreto (MWC)

Results: Round 2 - 14 September

Open A defeated St Rita’s 34 - 14

After a slow start, Loreto asserted their authority late in the second quarter, scoring a quick succession of 9 points, just before the half time

break. The second half belonged to Loreto with scoring coming from all over the floor. Kelly O’Leary’s defensive aggression was rewarded

with some great steals and Grace Kearney hit the final shot in front of a vocal cheer squad. Another impressive win!

Open B defeated MSM by forfeit

Intermediate A were defeated by All Hallows 55 - 10

Loreto scored the first basket of the game, but were unable to match the intensity and speed that All Hallows maintained. The opposition

were tall and managed to prevent most scoring opportunities and rebounded with ease. Taili Beausang and Madeleine Dinnen were strong

in attack, while Chiara Asnicar worked tirelessly in defense. Loreto will need to work on ball security and fluency of passing in the next

match.

Intermediate B defeated LHC 34 - 22

Loreto were very pleased to secure their first win of the season. There were obvious improvements in ball handling skills and lay ups. Emily

Taylor was magnificent in defense, as well as being very accurate in shooting. Julia Edwards moved well into space and this enabled the

team to maintain consistent possession. A great team effort, well done!

Junior A were defeated by MSM 45 - 10

Loreto faced a much stronger and experienced team in MSM this week. Initially, MSM dominated in attack, but through perseverance,

Loreto were able to advance the ball down the court with greater success. Sidney Brain had a very strong game producing several timely

intercepts. While the result did not go our way, improvement was apparent and training will continue to focus on ball handling skills to

maintain possession. Nyree Wood - Basketball Coordinator

BSGSA Touch Football This Week’s Draw - 4 October

Open A Loreto vs OLC Villa – Tingalpa V2 Open B OLC vs Loreto Villa – Tingalpa V3 Inter A BYE Inter B Loreto vs LHC(3) Villa – Tingalpa V9 Jun A LHC(1) vs Loreto O’Grady Park OG2

All players are reminded to wear Touch football shoes and College Sports cap to every game and training. Results: Round 2 - 14 September

Again this week all teams played well to ensure 3 wins and a draw from 4 games as the Intermediate B had a bye. Results are as follows:

Open A Loreto 7 – SSC 2 Loreto Won Open B Loreto 9 – SSC 3 Loreto Won Inter A Loreto 2 – OLC 1 Loreto Won Jun A Loreto 4 – SSC(1) 4 Draw

OPEN A: Coach: Therese Begley

A wonderful first half resulted in 4 touchdowns scored in enthusiastic fashion. The solid rucking placed the attack well into the opposition

half with the team scoring three more times. Unfortunately, lapses in defence in the second half resulted in San Sisto crossing twice, one of

which came directly from a tap as the players did not adjust quickly enough to defend. Bridget Sankey, Carla Wilson and Ashleigh O’Connor

attacked gaps and defended well for the entire game.

OPEN B: Coach: Mitch Edwards

A good win despite the team being ‘asleep’ in the first half. Fortunately they recovered to secure a well earned win. Teagan Fitzgerald was

the best player on field.

INTERMEDIATE A: Coach: Adam Guest

A close game with the opposition coming back from 2nil down to score late in the first half. Emily Smallhorn had a particularly good game.

Well done!

JUNIOR A: Coach: David Witt

The girls started off slowly in the first half and were not working together as a team and by the time the halftime whistle blew they found themselves 3-1 down. The second half saw the girls adopt a new attitude and through persistence and hard work they managed to hit the front with five minutes to go with touchdowns to Madison Witt (2) Lucy Nielson and Krystal Hatzipappas. A brief lapse in concentration saw San Sisto hit straight back with a touchdown from the tap, to level the scores at 4 apiece. The girls refocused and gained back their momentum and resumed control of the game for the last couple of minutes and were out-playing their opposition. In the dying seconds of the game, Brittney Ryan made a clean break from the middle of the field and ran half the length of the field to only be caught as she was about to ground the ball. So close but yet not close enough! Whilst not coming away with a win, the girls were all still smiling and learnt a

valuable lesson about teamwork and the importance of communication. Therese Begley - Touch Football Coordinator
