PRESENT, PAST AND FUTURE PASSIVE
Affirmative and Negative
Do you know the difference between the active and the passive form? Let's see it with an example.
1. Peter writes a letter 2. A letter is written by Peter
In which the subject is the DOER of the action? In which one the subject SUFFERS the action?
In which one is the SUBJECT important? In which one is the SUBJECT not important?
Which one is ACTIVE?Which one is PASSIVE?
The passive voice is formed with the verb to be and a past participle. Let's see how we change sentences from active to passive. Beyoncé sang a new song.
First, we locate the Direct Object. It will be the Subject of the passive.
A new song
Next, we locate the verb and find out in which tense it is. In this case, it is in the past simple. Then, we put the verb to be in the same tense as the active verb, followed by the past participle of the active verb.
was sung
Finally, we locate the subject and put it at the end of the sentence, with the preposition by in front of it. Sometimes, subjects such as somebody or people are omited in the passive. When the subject is a pronoun, it changes to an object pronoun after by: he -> by him, she -> by her, I -> by me, etc...
