PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It’s all about you...
Each Academy in the partnership will work collaboratively to support each other to develop world class and leading-edge education provision, based on the latest research, to benefit the unique communities that they all serve. The founding member LEAP schools are Mounts Bay, Five Islands School, Ludgvan, St Hilary and St Buryan Academies. All these schools already have strong links and have worked closely together for many years. I have written a letter to all parents/carers with full details of our proposal which is also available on our website here:www.mountsbay.org/leapeducation
Leaping forward...
Now is also a good time to remind you that our annual Carol Service (with a collection for the RNLI) will be at Madron Church at 7pm on Thursday 14th December.
HOT CHOCOLATE FRIDAY
The countdown to Christmas has begun in earnest here at Mounts Bay with the yearly Christmas Tree competition in our Reception area. Each house has its own tree which has been decorated by staff and students; the competition so far has been fierce but fair, with each tree changing its adornments in response to those around it. I look forward to seeing (and judging) the finished results.
Best wishes
We have just heard that one of our Class of 2017, Maisy-Sky Lumbers, has been nominated for a National Hospital Broadcasting award in the category Best Newcomer. This is a tremendous honour in her first year and she will be traveling to Windsor next year for a spectacular Gala Award dinner to see if she has scooped the prize.
The service is one of the highlights of our year and is always a fantastic mixture of songs and the Christmas story. We will be serving mince pies and coffee after the service in Landithy Hall; everyone is welcome so we hope you can join us.
Maisy-Sky will be broadcasting a special Christmas Eve show between 10:00 and 12:00 on CHBN; why not listen in online and make some requests. http://www.chbnradio.org/on-air/how-listen/online
Finally, well done to the students who joined me for Hot Chocolate Friday at break time today. They included two of the students who raised over £200 for the World Challenge India expedition as well as some of our talented musicians who performed in assemblies this week.
This week’s exciting news is that the Academy is moving into a new development phase of formal partnership with a number of very strong local Academies in Penwith during the Spring of 2018. The aim is to form a local Multi Academy Trust of schools called the “Leading Edge Academies Partnership”.

Ohm’s Law
Last week Year 10 Triple Scientists were set the homework task of researching and explaining Ohm’s Law. Sophie Hughes extended this task showing intrinsic motivation, purpose and a growth mindset by including details not only of Ohm’s Law, but also the
equation to calculate Ohm’s Law; she explained how to re-arrange the equation to calculate either of the three variables as well. She raised the challenge of the task by setting herself some deliberate practice by writing an example Ohm’s Law question which she correctly answered.
Sophie also refined her research to give an explanation of what resistance is and the causes of resistance. She used effort and skill to complete her research by drawing a current-voltage graph of the results one
could expect from an Ohmic component. This work was worthy of a Da Vinci.

EXCELLENCE REWARD
7 Warm explored the beautiful landscape of Cot Valley on Wednesday for their Real Project this semester. The students were very energetic and enjoyed climbing the rocks down to the beach and walking along the coast path. There were lots of opportunities
to take photographs, do observational sketches and write some description about the place. Students will then use this information for art work and creative writing in order to capture the ‘spirit of the place’ for their book project. The group were very enthusiastic and were a pleasure to take out.

This week the second half of Year 7, the warm population, went out on their REAL Project trips. 7 Yellow were very excited to get to Land’s End. After careful planning and preparation linked to their Essential Question, ‘How do I capture the spirit of a
place?’, they had a clear idea of what they needed to observe when on location.
During the visit, students engaged in drawing exercises, creative writing workshops and also carried out a photo shoot to document the landscape around them. The air was cold and the wind blew with force, which created a wintery atmosphere; students were very resilient and worked like professional artists and writers, continuing with their recording
despite the elements. 7 Yellow have developed some beautiful outcomes already, and I am very excited to see more of what they develop in the next few lessons. They are making links between their own artistic preferences and the practice of established artists, contextualising their ideas in a very considered way.
Well done everyone! Brilliant work!

7 Orange visited Trengwainton Gardens this week to gather a range of source material for their REAL 'book' project.
Having explored some of the History surrounding the creation of the gardens in school, students were able to see the amazing range of beautiful exotic plants, fruits, vegetables and flowers in the context of their research. Students spent time exploring, taking photographs and having a group picnic there before heading back to the Academy.

On Wednesday 7 Red visited Penzance to collect resources for their REAL book project. Fortunately they were guided by Ms Rylett who was able to illuminate
many features of the town, such as the head of John the Baptist on a platter carved in the rock above the door to Lloyds Bank and the mysterious missing button on the statue of Sir Humphry Davy. 7 Red searched back in time to find the spirit of the place down to the shore by Jubilee Pool. I wonder if they found it?

BE CURIOUS
In 2019 myself (Katie Trahair-Davies), Dolcie Hughes-Penzer, Lilly Hardy and Elsey Kirby are going on the India trip, so to raise some money we organised and ran a Year 7 disco on Wednesday evening.
Year 8 students currently taking ELEMENT visited the Living Well Centre in Sancreed on Wednesday. The Centre, which has been developed on a greenfield site since 2004, allowed students to explore sustainability in action and hear all about it from residents
who have made significant changes to reduce the impact of their lives on the environment for future generations. Many thanks must go to Rachel and Maggie from the site, who both provided the groups with passionate insights into why and how they have chosen more sustainable lifestyles. First they heard about the permaculture approach applied to the land, which involved doing nothing but watching the influence of nature for the first year, before over 4,000 trees were planted for orchard and coppice production, as well as areas for growing vegetables, fruits, flowers, a green compost array and bio-beds to purify waste water. Additionally students found out about the different types of sustainable building styles implemented there, including a straw-bale roundhouse, huts made from locally salvaged materials and a ‘flat-pack’
construction, super-insulated eco-house.Report by: Ms Evans

BE CURIOUS
As part of the REAL Project: The Adventurer Documentary, Savannah Gibbs from 7 Green took the initiative to email her chosen adventurer, mountaineer Ty Smith, with some questions about his explorations. To her surprise, Savannah opened her emails to find a reply from Ty with a link to a video he recorded for her answering her questions, along with some photos from his expeditions. The video was played to 7 Green in their next REAL Project lesson for them to hear what he had to say.
Ty is currently enjoying some rest after summiting the Matterhorn (pictured) in Switzerland before his next challenge which will see him train in the Himalayas in pursuit of summiting Mount Everest. Savannah and her peers will look to correspond with Ty for updates in due course.
Good luck Ty!

MixXjam
On Tuesday night we held our annual Years 10 and 11 MixXjam performance at The Acorn Theatre in Penzance. This great event provides our young musicians with the opportunity to perform in a professional venue, to a paying public crowd.
The first half featured acoustic performances including original songs through to unusual versions of famous songs. With so many amazing songwriters now in the Academy, the standard was very high. Showcasing songs for this year’s label releases
were Amber Symons, Emily Rees, Alice Thacker, Jenny McKniff and Ellie Sawbridge.
We also had some great performances from our Rockschool students, with Ewan Ford and Morgan Kyle kicking off the show with a great version of The Lazy Song. Maddie Thomas finished the first half with two amazing tunes.

For the second half we turned up the volume and filled the space with loud performances from six bands featuring current students from MBA and
students who have moved on to college from last year.
It was a great night and we are looking forward to the Years 7 to 9 event in March.

This week we had a guest from Imago Theatre Company who spoke to MBA students. Mr George Yates will be auditioning for three productions next year. The first will be ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, which is an ‘A’ level English text. If you are interested, auditions are on the 13th and 18th December 7-9 pm at the Admiral Benbow. You will need to deliver a prepared speech, no longer than two minutes, as well as an unseen speech from the Tennessee Williams play (provided by them) in a southern accent. Auditions are just not for ‘Streetcar’, but also for other productions.

The Year 10 GCSE Drama group are working on their devising unit in this semester. So to begin with the class have been learning some techniques that could be useful in their future performances. The techniques covered have been duologue, flashback, physical theatre, chorus work and mime. This is not only developing their confidence but they have had to work with different people each time. They have all shown respect to each other and built on their peer relationships. It has been really fun watching their ideas take shape and being performed in front of their class.

Mounts Bay’s Years 7 and 8 hockey teams headed down to Penzance Hockey Club’s Astro to play a few friendlies against St Ives and Humphry Davy last week. In the first competition both the boys and girls teams gelled really well and put on fantastic
displays. Everyone showed great promise and, despite the horrendous weather, spirits soared and everyone came off the pitch with smiles on their faces. Now we look towards our County Competitions after Christmas.

The Mounts Bay Year 11 football team travelled to Truro to face rivals Richard Lander in the County Cup. Richard Lander have beaten us on two different occasions, however we went into the game with a different mindset. Mounts Bay started the game off well,
on the front foot for most of the first half, with many chances kept out by their keeper. Both teams went into the break equal. After a short inspirational speech we were ready for what might be our last game together. We again started on the front foot putting pressure on their gigantic defence. We soon broke the back of the net when the leaping gazelle, Louis Thorpe, had a header palmed away for him to then put it in the back of the net. Mounts Bay applied pressure to try and grab another goal to win the game but it was Richard Lander who scored in the last five minutes, levelling the score. With the game tied, Harry H had a late goal disallowed for offside, and at full-time the teams went into extra-time. Again the score was level so it had to go to penalties. Mounts Bay held their nerve to win the game 5-4 in the shoot-out. The
scorers were Mawgan K, Harry H, Tom H, Noah B and Matt R.

Both Amelia Harris and Abigail Birch made the long journey to Cardiff on Sunday to compete in the Welsh Junior Open Championships. Whilst Amelia
was comfortably clearing the bar in the practice jumps, unfortunately pressure took its toll and she was unable to make a clear jump (high jump). Abigail competed in the shot-put, but despite her classification as it wasn’t a para athletic event, she had to compete as an U17 against others a good foot taller than her! Abigail obtained a new PB and managed to finish just 0.4m behind the other competitors who had a height advantage.
