It my great pleasure to welcome you in

Doha (QAT) for the third edition of the FINA

World Aquatics Convention, taking place

from November 29-December 1, 2014.

As one of the most important milestones

in our calendar, the FINA World Aquatics

Convention will confirm for its third edi-

tion the essential link between our National

Federations and business partners, proud

of being associated with Aquatics. As in

2010 (Punta del Este, Uruguay) and 2012

(Moscow, Russia), the Convention will be

a unique opportunity to gather our Family

and to exchange experiences and visions

about the promotion, worldwide interest

and innovative ways to further enhance the

Aquatics brand.

In the exciting and dynamic capital of Qa-

tar, our delegates will be briefed about the

latest trends in Aquatics and will be provid-

ed with the keys of success that helped our

Sport being a pillar of the Olympic Move-

ment. The overall view of these successful

strategies are certainly helpful for further

progress at national level and definitively

lead to an harmonious development of our

six aquatic disciplines in the five continents.

Together with the Convention, the 2nd

FINA Swimming Coaches Golden Clinic, will

bring together a prestigious panel of coach-

es willing to share their winning strategies

and to unveil some of the secrets to make

a champion in pool and in life. The first edi-

tion of this Clinic, in 2012, generated a huge

interest and the feedback of its success

makes this rendezvous a major event for all

those training our swimming athletes.

As with the Aquatics Conference, the dis-

cussion generated among lecturers and del-

egates will be an additional inspiration for

globally ensure a long-lasting enhancement

of our athletes’ performances.

After this major event, the 12th edition of

our FINA World Swimming Championships

(25m) will be staged from December 3-7, in

Doha’s Hamad Aquatic Centre, one of the

most advanced venues in the planet. During

the five-day competition, we will be able to

see the fruits of our work and enjoy the out-

standing results of our Stars.

On this occasion, I would like to thank the

Qatar Swimming Association, Qatar Olym-

pic Committee and the local Organisers and

authorities for their continued and essen-

tial support in staging this Aquatic Festival

here in Doha.

I also express my sincere gratitude to our

valued Top Partners, all lecturers and del-

egates of the Convention for their enthu-

siasm and devotion to Aquatics. Together,

we can be stronger and make Aquatics even

more important!

We are delighted to welcome you all to

Doha during this very exciting time for

sport in Qatar.

This week the eyes of the world will be on

our nation once again as we host another

world-class sporting event, the 12th FINA

World Swimming Championships (25m).

But perhaps the most significant part of this

sport event is the 3rd FINA World Aquatics

Convention, where the future of aquatic

sports will come under the spotlight.

Our nation has established itself as a meet-

ing point and valued partner where leaders

come together to exchange knowledge in

a sincere effort to continue the growth of

sport. From the recently-concluded Doha

GOALS forum to the Youth Athletics Coach-

ing Congress, Doha’s commitment to sports

development on every level has always con-

tinued to gather momentum.

We are proud to once again be helping to

shape the future of sport as we host the 3rd

FINA World Aquatics Convention along

with our partners at FINA, with whom we

have a strong relationship this year as hosts

to the first meet of the FINA Mastbank

Swimming World Cup and the 12th FINA

World Swimming Championships (25m).

Across the three days of the convention, we

will hear from the perspective of host cities,

federations, athletes, sponsors and the me-

dia regarding the visions that will be shared

and best practices debated but we will all

certainly be united in one thing – our desire

to drive engagement and safeguard the fu-

ture of aquatic sports.

The convention reflects many of the same

ambitions that we as a nation hold, to be-

come a leading force in uniting the world

through sustainable sport development.

This week we are all making significant

steps towards that goal with all of our part-

ners and guests here today.

Friends, colleagues and esteemed guests

– welcome to Doha for what is sure to be a

fulfilling three days at the 3rd FINA World

Aquatics Convention.

2014 is a special year for swimming in

Doha; a Festival of Aquatics. We welcomed

the world’s best in August for the FINA/

MASTBANK Swimming World Cup and we

are excited to see many of them return for

the 12th FINA World Swimming Champion-

ships (25m) next week. Today, we welcome

the global aquatic family.

Since Qatar hosted its first major FINA

event in 2009, we have already seen the

impact and inspiration that has had on our

own young athletes with more swimmers

than ever competing for Qatar in both the

Youth Olympic Games and the Asian Games

this year. Aquatic sports are growing in Qa-

tar and we want to ensure that growth con-

tinues not just in the region, but all over the

world.

We have also been able to bring aquatic

sports to the local community, giving them

an opportunity to witness first-hand the

talents of the world’s most accomplished

athletes and the unique experience of live

competition. More than 7,000 fans packed

Hamad Aquatic Centre at the FINA/MAST-

BANK Swimming World Cup 2014 – Doha,

many of them returning to the arena since

to try a new sport for themselves.

Aquatic sports have brought much joy to

Qatar, and now we have the opportunity to

show our support back as host to the 3rd

FINA World Aquatics Convention.

ABOUT FINA

The “Fédération Internationale de Natation” (FINA) was founded in London July 19, 1908 during the Olympic Games in London

(GBR). Eight national federations were responsible for the formation of FINA: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,

Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden.

In 2014, under the presidency of Dr. Julio C. Maglione, FINA comprises 204 National Member Federations in the five

continents. Its main objectives include:

- To promote and encourage the development of Aquatics in all possible manifestations throughout the world;

- To provide drug free sport;

- To promote and encourage the development of international relations;

- To adopt necessary uniform rules and regulations to hold competitions in Swimming, Open Water Swimming, Diving,

High Diving, Water Polo, Synchronised Swimming and Masters;

- To organise World Championships and other FINA events;

- To carry out such other activities as may be desirable to promote the Sport.

Since 1973, FINA organises World Championships with on the programme its six aquatic disciplines: swimming, diving, water

polo, synchronised swimming, open water swimming and high diving. The first 15 editions took place in Belgrade (YUG, 1973),

Cali (COL, 1975), Berlin (GER, 1978), Guayaquil (ECU, 1982), Madrid (ESP, 1986), Perth (AUS, 1991), Rome (ITA, 1994), Perth

(AUS, 1998), Fukuoka (JPN, 2001), Barcelona (ESP, 2003), Montreal (CAN, 2005), Melbourne (AUS, 2007), Rome (ITA, 2009),

Shanghai (CHN, 2011) and Barcelona (ESP, 2013). The next editions will take place in Kazan (RUS) in 2015, Guadalajara (MEX)

in 2017, Gwangju (KOR) in 2019 and Budapest (HUN) in 2021.

Other milestones include the introduction of: World Cups in swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming (1979),

World Masters Championships (1986), World Swimming Championships in 25m-pool (every two years since 1993), Marathon

Swimming World Cup (1994), Diving Grand Prix (1995) and the Super Final of the Diving Grand Prix (1998), World Open

Water Swimming Championships (2000), Water Polo World Leagues for men (2002) and for women (2004), World Junior

Swimming Championships (2006), Synchronised Swimming World Trophy (2006), Diving World Series (2007), World Water

Polo Development Trophy (2007), 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup (2007), Open Water Swimming Grand Prix (2007),

World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships (2012) and High Diving World Cup (2014).

FINA and its aquatic disciplines are also a pillar of the Olympic Movement and give a decisive contribution to the success of

the Games. Swimming is part of the Olympic programme since 1896, Water Polo became the first team sport in the Games in

1900, and Diving made its appearance in 1904. Eighty years later, in 1984, Synchronised Swimming joined the Olympic “club”,

while Marathon Swimming (10km race for men and women) is included in the Olympic programme since 2008.

FINA has its headquarters in Lausanne (SUI).

FINA, whose slogan is “Water is our World”, has a fundamental objective: to promote and encourage the development of Aquatics in all possible regards throughout the world. To achieve this mission, in addition to other activities already carried out, FINA will launch in Doha a special programme named Swimming for All – Swimming for Life with the goal to teach children how to swim and to promote physical activity through swimming across the globe.

This programme will offer standard criteria to teach swimming at the global scale and will mostly be carried out in those countries on the five continents that need it most. In this context, swimming will be more accessible, democratising its practise. FINA and some of its partners in this initiative will present the delegates with the strategy for the years to come.

An international swimmer for his country, Dr. Julio Cesar Maglione has served in a myriad of leading capacities, including Vice-Minister of Public Health in Uruguay (1991-1992); a member and President of the National Olympic Committee (1987 until present day). He has served within FINA as a member of the Bureau (1984-1988), Vice President (1988-1992), Honorary Treasurer (1992-2009), and President (since 2009). Born in 1935, he represented Uruguay at the Latin American Games in 1954 and the Pan-American Games in 1955. In 1969, he was elected President of the Uruguayan Swimming Federation and served a second term in that office up until 1985. An IOC Member, he is also Vice President for the Americas in ANOC (Association of National Olympic Committees). Honorary Pres-ident of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport, UNESCO, Dr. Maglione has received many prestigious awards, including the FINA Gold Pin, the IOC Cen-tennial Trophy, the Legion of Honour of the French Republic, and the Honorary Citizenship of Montevideo.

Jan-Anders Månson is Professor and Director of the Polymer and Composite Labora-tory (LTC) at the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). He was until 2008, Vice-president at the EPFL, responsible for Innovation and Technology Transfer. Since 2003, he is the President of AISTS (International Academy of Sport Science and Technol-ogy) and member of the Swedish and Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. In the sport education and technology related fields, Prof. Månson has led the scientific activities for America’s Cup-Alinghi, two-times winner, for Solar Impulse and for Hydroptère at EPFL. He is currently the Chairman of the Swimwear Approval Commission (SAC) of FINA. Member of the Equipment Commission of the UCI (International Cycling Union), Scientific Advisor at the World Taekwondo Federation and Board Member of the Antidoping Switzerland Foundation. He advises the IOC Sports Department and in particular the IOC Entourage Commission on technology related issues. FINA Vice President

Husain Al Musallam graduated from Oxford Air Training Institute, U.K. as an Airline Com-mercial Pilot and holds a diploma in Sports Management from Heidelberg University, Ger-many. Husain was a member of the Kuwait National Swimming Team for a period of 5 years between 1973 and 1978 and competed at the FINA World Championships in 1975 and 1978. After having completed a successful swimming career, Husain became team manager of the Kuwait National Swimming Team for a period of 4 years between 1981 and 1985. Later he moved his talent from swimming and coaching to the administration of sports. Since 1998, Husain has been the Secretary General of the Kuwait Swimming Association and became a FINA Bureau Member in 1996. Husain has also been highly involved in the organisation of many international events including, among others, the various editions of the Asian Games (1986, 1999, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010), the Asian Winter Games (1986, 1990, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2007), the Asian Indoor Games (2005, 2007 and 2009), the Asian Beach Games (2008, 2010 and 2012) and the FINA World Championships (1998, 2001, 2003 and 2007). In parallel with his involvement in the Aquatics world, Husain re-mains an active airline captain.

FINA Executive Director

Born in Bucharest on July 17, 1941, Cornel Marculescu graduated from the capital city’s Institute of Sport and Physical Education in 1964, the year in which he represented his country in water polo at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, helping his squad finish in fifth place in the tournament. A member of the Romanian team in 165 international games between 1958 and 1970, Mr. Marculescu then moved on to coaching and serving as an official. As a referee for 10 years (1970-80), he was namely on duty at the 1972 Olympic water polo final. A polyglot who converses with ease in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and, of course, Romanian, he acted as Technical Director of the Romanian Swimming Federation and, while a member of the FINA Technical Committee in 1977, was chosen as Technical Director for the Spanish Swimming Federation. In 1986, Mr. Marculescu was the key man behind the success of the FINA World Championships in Madrid (ESP). His work made him a natural for the position of managing the first permanent office of FINA when it opened in Lausanne in 1987. He is since then FINA’s Executive Director. Former Honorary Secretary of the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee (1978 - 1980), Mr. Marculescu is FINA’s reg-ular representative at sports forums worldwide. His work was recognised in 2001, when he received the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Paragon Award for outstanding con-tribution to swimming.

Peter is one of the UK’s most experienced sport event managers. Passionate about sport

and its potential role for community benefit, he is well known to and respected by Inter-

national and National Sport Governing Bodies and sports organisations throughout the

world. Currently Executive Director for the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m)

Windsor 2016, Peter was previously Operations Director for the same event in Dubai 2010

and Chief Executive of the innovative Manchester 2008 FINA World Swimming Champi-

onships (25m). As Director of Sport for Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, Peter

played a major role in the development of the city’s facility strategy for those Games – a

strategy that left Manchester with a portfolio of world-class sport facilities. No stranger

to the commercial world of entertainment either, Peter’s company were the UK promoters

for the Harlem Globetrotters and staged more than 50 shows at major venues across the

UK and Europe in the six years between 2003 and 2008.

Kiril Todorov holds a Bachelor in Production Engineering and a Diploma in Management and Sports Marketing. President of the Mexican Swimming Federation (Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo, Open Water Swimming, High Diving and Masters), Kiril is a former member of FINA´s Technical Synchronised Swimming Committee and is presently Vice Chairman of the FINA Technical Swimming Committee. In addition to his role within the Mexican Swimming Federation, Kiril is also a member of the Steering Com-mittee of the National Sports System of Mexico and the Executive Committee of the Mex-ican Olympic Committee. In parallel, Kiril is the director of multiple national and interna-tional events.

Vladimir Leonov was born on 25 August 1977 in Kazan. In 2000, Mr. Leonov graduated from Kazan State Finance and Economics Institute. He holds a PhD in Economics. Through-out various years’ service, he was employed as Deputy Director of Creative youth public organisation of the Republic of Tatarstan, Director of the television creative association, Director General of the Universiade Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate and FC Rubin Di-rector General. During 2014, Mr. Leonov was an Aide to the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. On 17 September 2014, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov signed a decree appointing Vladimir Leonov to the post of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Mr. Barelli was born on June 7, 1954 and resides in Rome. Barelly is Senator of the Ital-ian Republic (elected three times since 2001). As a swimmer, he has been 20 times Italian champion and 22 times Italian record holder in freestyle, butterfly and medley. Mr. Barelli attended the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and has been Olympic finalist twice in Mon-treal 1976. Medallist at the FINA World Championships in Cali (Colombia, 1975), he at-tended in Belgrade 1973 the first FINA World Championships. He was gold medallist at the Mediterranean Games in Algiers (1975). Since 2000, he is President of the Italian Swim-ming Federation. Mr. Barelli was the Head of Delegation at the Olympic Games of Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. He received the Stella d’Oro for sport merits in 2001 (the most important award in Italian sport). Since 2000, he is in the National Coun-cil of CONI, the Italian Olympic Committee.Since 2012, Mr. Barelli is the President of the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN) and from 1990 to 2000 Vice-President of the LEN Technical Swimming Committee. Since 2008, he is the Vice-President of the Confédération Méditerranéenne de Natation (CO.ME.N) and since 2009 FINA Honorary Secretary.

The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club has carved out a remarkable reputation in the Nation-al Hockey League including five Stanley Cups, seven players in the Hockey Hall of Fame and inspiring leadership. Patrick¹s inspirational leadership involves strategically growing the sports and entertainment portfolio of the OEG, while overseeing customer relations resulting in more than nine consecutive season sellouts at the end of the 2013-14 NHL sea-son. His responsibilities include leadership of day-to-day operations of Rogers Place, Ed-monton’s new iconic downtown arena, set to open in 2016. In 2008, Patrick was chosen as a Top 50 Most Influential Person in Alberta and a recipient of the Consumer Choice Award as Edmonton Business Person of the Year. He was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012; named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in 2013, and recently awarded a 2014 Alberta Innovation Award for his advocacy on behalf of the Hope Haven Women¹s Shelter in Lac La Biche, his birthplace. As one of the most promising water polo players around during his teenage years and later, as a sports-writer, Tamas has built strong connections with aquatics. Soon after becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs and TV producers in Hungary, Tamas was elected President of the Hungarian Swimming Association in 1993. Tamas has been chairing the federation ever since. Under his leadership Hungary emerged to become one of the top nations in swimming and in open water thanks to the top-rated events Hungary has hosted in recent years. After staging five highly successful European Championships (LC in 2006, 2010, 2012, SC in 2007, Juniors in 2005), Tamas convinced the Government to bid for the top FINA Events. As a result, Budapest won the bid for the 2021 FINA World Champion-ships, as well as the 2017 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. Tamas also serves as FINA Vice President as well as LEN Treasurer and was Vice President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee for two terms.

Manolo Romero is one of the pioneers in sports television and is considered a leading professional in the field of television production of major international sporting events. Throughout his career, spanning more than 40 years, Romero has been directly involved in the television coverage of every Olympics since Mexico in 1968, countless other sporting World Cups, World Championships and many other events. Romero has been involved in many developments and enhancements and has consistently raised the bar and heightened the viewer experience. In recognition of his achievements he has received the Internation-al Olympic Committee’s highest honour, ‘The Olympic Order’, the ‘Paralympic Order’ by the International Paralympic Committee, several Emmy’s, Sportel Awards and other interna-tional awards. A 14-time Emmy Award-winner, Peter C. Diamond is responsible for programming NBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games. The Sochi Winter Games was his 16th Olympics – more than any broadcast network executive in television history. Diamond works on a regular basis with the international Olympic sports federations and the national governing bodies of Olympic sports in the U.S. He began his career at ABC Sports in July 1974, serving as the Olympic researcher for the network’s coverage of the 1976 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria, and the Summer Games in Montreal. Diamond originally joined NBC in 1977 as Associate Producer, Olympic Research. Denis is currently Executive Director of the Oceania National Olympic Committees and FINA Vice-President. He acted as swim team manager for the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and the Olympic Games in Seoul. Several times chef de mission of the Fiji team, Denis was also a swimming technical official. For a period of seven years, from 2001 until 2008, Denis was FINA Technical Delegate for the various editions of the Marathon Swim-ming World Cup. In parallel, Denis was competition manager for, among other events, the 2003 South Pacific Games and the 2005 Oceania Masters Swimming Championships.

5-time Olympic Champion, Backstroke swimmer

Aaron Peirsol is an American former competition swimmer and backstroke specialist who is a former world champion and world record-holder. He is a three-time Olympian and sev-en-time Olympic medallist (five gold, two silver). As a member of the U.S. national team, he holds the world record in the men’s 4×100m medley relay (long course). Individually, he currently holds the world record in the 100m and 200m backstroke events (long course). In his Olympic debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics, Peirsol won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke. Four years later, at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Peirsol won gold in the 100m and 200m backstroke (sweeping the backstroke events) and the 4×100m medley relay. In his third Olympics (2008 Summer Olympics), Peirsol won gold in the 100m backstroke and the 4×100m medley relay. He came short of his success he had in Athens by winning silver in the 200m backstroke.

Trevor is responsible for the development of the North American and Commonwealth mar-kets for Myrtha Pools. He also co-ordinates the “special events” activities of the company, which has seen Myrtha pools being used in many of the world’s finest Aquatic competitions. Myrtha Pools is currently building permanent facilities in Baku for the inaugural Europe-an Championships, in Gwangju for the World Universiad and Port Moresby for the Pacific Games. Prior to his current position, Trevor was part of Swimming Canada’s team and was Head Coach and Team Leader at three Olympics Games. He has extensive experience in in-ternational swimming being a founding member and inaugural Secretary of the Pan Pacific Swimming Association. Trevor is still an active volunteer in sport and is currently on the board of the Canadian Olympic Association and the International Committee of Swimming Canada.

On of the six iconic water polo players who was part of Hungary’s three Olympic triumphs in 2000, 2004 and 2008. A skillful, aggressive and rather smart attacker, Tamas Molnar be-longs to the circle of legendary centre-forwards – though he was not a giant in body-terms but an ever-moving player who always offered a trick or two to create scoring chances. He was born (1975) and raised in Szeged, south of Budapest, where he also earned his lawyer degree. Later he played for Jug Dubrovnik (CRO), Becej (SRB) and Honved (HUN) – and won national titles with each in succession. He was a protagonist of the golden chapter of the national team between 1997 and 2008: during this period Hungary finished on the po-dium 23 times out of 25 major international competitions. Besides the three Olympic gold medals he owns a world title (2003), two World League golds (2003, 2004), a World Cup gold (1999) and two European crowns (1997, 1999). He is a father of two (twin sons) and currently serves as the President of his beloved local club of Szeged, sits in the Executive Board of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation and he is an acting referee in the top divi-sion who is ready for an international career.

Known by a variety of nicknames – “Sasha,” “The Russian Rocket,” “Ice Man,” and “Big Dog” – Aleksandr Popov is considered by many as the greatest sprint freestyle swimmer ever. At the World Championships, Popov won the 50m free in 1994 and 2003, and the 100m free in 1994, 1998, and 2003. His World Championship record saw him win gold six times, silver four times, and bronze once between 1994 and 2003. During his career Popov set one world record at both of the two sprint distances: 48.21 in the 100m free in 1994, which stood for six years, and 21.64 in the 50m free in 2000, which stood for eight years. A mem-ber of the International Olympic Committee, he won the FINA Prize and the Russian Medal of Honour for his contributions to sport in 1996 . As an international swimmer, Penny Heyns established herself as the world’s greatest female breaststroker of the 20th Century by becoming the only woman in Olympic history to win both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events in Atlanta 1996, bronze in Sydney 2000 and by breaking a total of 14 individual world records during her career. Furthermore, she is still the only Breaststroke swimmer, male or female, in the history of swimming to break long course world records in all 3 possible distances, namely the 50m, 100m and 200m and short course 50m and 100m thus simultaneously holding a total 5 of the possi-ble 6 event world records. The Special Adviser leads and coordinates the efforts of the United Nations system to promote understanding and support for sport as an instrument for development and peace, and encourages dialogue, collaboration and partnerships in this area. Mr. Lemke has over 25 years of professional experience in both sport and politics. From 1999 to 2008, he served as Senator of the Interior and Sport as well as Senator for Education and Science of the State of Bremen, Germany. Mr. Lemke was manager for 18 years of Werder Bremen, one of the top football clubs in Europe. In this capacity, he notably engaged in fundraising and the initiation of relief projects in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Throughout his career he has been a dedicated advocate for the importance of sport in education and society.

Born in 1944, Jean-Paul is a former swimmer and water polo player. He holds a degree in sport from the French Ecole Normale Supérieure. Jean-Paul started his career as a pro-fessor at the University René Descartes in Paris, France. He then became head coach of the French Water Polo team, a position which he held for 14 years. Jean-Paul brought the team twice to the Olympic Games, three times to the World Championships and six times to the European Championships. At the same time, Jean-Paul was the French Swimming Federation’s National Technical Director assistant. From 1992 until 2005, Jean-Paul was a member of the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee. In 1994, Jean-Paul became the French Swimming Federation’s National Technical Director for a period of six years. From 2001 until 2009, Jean-Paul held the office of Director of the French Olympic Committee. Since 2010, Jean-Paul has served as General Delegate at the French Sport Foundation Hen-ri-Sérandour. Since 2014, Jean-Paul has been a member of the FINA Innovation Commis-sion.

Ed Evelly had been an aquatics volunteer for over 30 years having first served at the club level in his home town as an executive and swimming official. Ed quickly moved on to the National level for 12 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Swimming/Natation Canada. Ed further served four years on the Executive Committee of Swimming/Natation Canada as Vice-President of Corporate Affairs. He is currently serving his 4th term on the FINA Masters Committee having served a term as Honorary Secretary and currently as Chairman. Ed is also a member of the UANA Masters Committee and a member of the Board of Directors and Vice-President of Masters Swimming Canada. While swimming in competition came to Ed later in life, he is now an active aquatics participant, swimming reg-ularly and having competed at many National and International competitions in Masters. Ed spent 37 years in academic life as the Director of Education and Laboratory Support Services at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. He is presently retired but has returned to work as a Staff Consultant on Curriculum Renewal and Expansion.

Kathy Seaman, Chairperson, FINA Technical Diving Committee With over 45 years of experience on the international diving scene, Kathy has an unparal-leled history of service and commitment to aquatic sport. Between 1967 and 1972, Kathy entered 20 international diving events, toured the world and brought home many medals, accolades and triumphs. During that period, the ten-metre board became her event and she achieved her goal by placing 9th in the Women’s Platform event at the 1972 Munich Olym-pic Games. Kathy has been active within the FINA Technical Diving Committee since 1996 and is currently holds the position of chairperson. In 1995, Kathy became a member, and later secretary and chairperson of the UANA Technical Diving Committee. Kathy is also a renowned international and judge and referee. As such, Kathy has judged at three Olympic Games (1984, 1988 and 1996), three World Championships, six Commonwealth Games and two Pan American Games.

Thomas Gompf has been involved in every aspect of diving and aquatics for 60 years. As a teenager he excelled in diving and gymnastics. His athletic accomplishments include cham-pionships in diving and gymnastics in the US, Japan, Spain and Canada. After completing a successful amateur career, he competed in early High Diving events (up to 30 metres), twice winning what was known as the World Professional High Diving Championships. Lat-er he moved his talent from diving and coaching to the administration of sports. He helped USA Diving as the National Governing Body, served 25 years in the USOC Board of Direc-tors serving on various committees that dealth with the fosting of four Olympic Games (80, 84, 69 and 2002). As a member and chairman of the FINA TDC, he led the formation of the Grand Prix Diving series, revamped and modernised the diving degree of difficulty tables and wrote the riles and promoted the Synchronised Diving Events, which were accepted into the Olympic Programme in 2000.

Brenda is the most decorated female water polo player ever, a 4-time Olympic medalist (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012) and World Champion (2003, 2007, 2009). Brenda started swimming at age 6 with Commerce Aquatics in Commerce, California, and began playing water polo at age 8. Named the “FINA Female Water Polo Player of the Decade” for the 2000s, Brenda is an accomplished scorer and passer, and has competed with the USA Women’s national team for the last 16 years. As an undergraduate at Stanford University, she won the 2002 Peter J. Cutino Award as the top female college water polo player. Brenda also co-founded a non-profit organisation, Project 2020, which strives to provide access to aquatic sports to youth that would otherwise not have had this opportunity.

Commonly referred to as the “Iron Lady”, Katinka Hosszu is a 3-time Hungarian Olympian, 2-time Olympic Finalist, 3-time World Champion, and 9-time European Champion. She has broken 11 World Records and is the only female to ever hold the 100, 200 and 400 Individ-ual Medley SCM World Records at the same time. Over the last three years, Katinka has won and defended the FINA Swimming World Cup Overall title, which has assisted her in becoming the first swimmer in history to earn over one million US dollars gained specifical-ly as race prize money. After earning the nickname of Iron Lady, due to her strong will and grueling event schedules, she hopes to inspire the youth and to leave the sport better than went she started. The first step was the release of her motivational Book, “Hungary’s Iron Lady” in Hungarian, with an English version to follow it by early spring.

Petar Stoychev, one of the legends of open water swimming, has one of the most impressive resumes in the sport of swimming – he has won world championships, represented Bulgaria in 4 Olympics (as both a pool and open water swimmer). He is the first swimmer crossing the English Channel in less than 7 hours in 24 August 2007. In the 2008 Olympics he was the flag bearer for the Bulgarian Olympic team and swam both the 1500m and the 10 km. He swam the 400m and 1500m at both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. At the 2011 Worlds, he captured gold in the 25 km swim in Shanghai China. Stoychev won the FINA World Cup Se-ries from 2001 to 2006 and was the FINA Grand Prix series champion from 2007 to 2011. His numerous accolades include induction into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and the 2009 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year. Petar has also been named Bulgarian Sport Minister in 2013.

Born in 1979 in Rostock, Germany, Britta started swimming at the age of six. At the age of 15, she took part in her first competitions in Open Water Swimming where she was to re-alise her biggest achievements. Britta became European Champion in 2004 in 5 km, 10 km and 25 km and a World Champion in 2002 in 10 km, 2004 in 10 km and 25 km and 2007 in 25 km. She won the FINA World Cup Series in 2003 and 2006. Since 2009, Britta has been a member of the FINA Athletes Commission/Athletes Committee. After completing school, Britta studied law at the University of Rostock and graduated in 2006. After a two years legal clerkship from 2009 to 2011, Britta is now working as a prosecutor in Rostock. She has a three year old daughter and a baby son of three months.

Dale Neuburger is currently serving his fourth term as FINA Vice President (Americas). He is Chairman of the FINA Development Commission, FINA Bureau Liaison to the Technical Swimming Committee and Chairman of the FINA Technical Swimming Commission, serving as Technical Delegate for Swimming in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and the 2010 and 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Dale previously served as President of United States Aquatic Sports, President of USA Swimming and Chairman of the Board of the Internation-al Swimming Hall of Fame. Dale is currently a Board member of US Aquatic Sports, USA Swimming, and the USA Swimming Foundation. Dale was a Board member of the United States Olympic Committee and a member of its Executive Committee, serving as chairman of the National Governing Bodies (NGB) Council. Neuburger has a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics from Princeton University, and holds two Master’s degrees from Indiana Univer-sity, in philanthropic studies and in public administration.

12-time World Champion, High diving

With 12 world titles and two Guinness world records to his name, Colombian cliff diver Orlando Duque has proved his tremendous ability time and again from 27 metres, reaching the very pinnacle of his sport over the last 15 years. In 2013, in Barcelona, the 39-year-old became the winner of the first-ever High Diving competition at the FINA World Champi-onships. Duque’s high diving career began in Europe where he improved his diving skills, helped at the time by coach Ken Grove, a former Olympic diver himself and now a World Series judge. In his first world championships in 1999, Duque took second place and so be-gan a hugely successful cliff diving career, the highlight of which saw him become the first Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series champion at the final in Greece, in September 2009. Or-lando’s focus is now on learning new dives in a bid to increase his Degree of Difficulty and stay at the top of a sport that is rapidly-evolving.

Olivier Niamkey, Head of Athletes programmes and Continental manager for Asia, Olympic Solidarity Olivier Niamkey is a 41 years old former Basketball player. Olivier holds a Degree in Sport Science from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and a Master in Sport Management from the University of Grenoble, France. Olivier first started his career at the University of Lausanne as a physical education teacher and programme manager. He then joined the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1999 within the Candidate Cities Department. Since 2008, Olivier is Head of Athletes programmes and Continental manager for Asia at Olympic Solidarity. Olympic Solidarity’s aim is to organise assistance for all the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), particularly those with the greatest needs, so that they can develop their own structures to favour the expansion of sport and Olympism in their coun-try.

Erdem took part in numerous international championships such as the European Junior Championships and the Mediterranean Games where he finished second. Erdem holds an impressive 44 na-tional records. Erdem graduated from the University of Tampa, Florida, USA in 2005. He joined the Turkish Swimming Federation in 2013 as the Swimming National Team manager. Since April 2014, Erdem has been the Director of the Turkish Swimming Performance Proj-ect within the Turkish Swimming Federation. His personal objective is to help the Turkish Swimming Federation in its long-time efforts to achieve domestic, regional, and interna-tional success for its swimming program.

Prior to this role, Jin Teik was Group Executive Vice President & China CEO, Hyflux Ltd, an environmental water solutions com-pany; and CEO, Singapore Sports Council, a government statutory board to grow the sports ecosystem in Singapore. An Olympian, Jin Teik is also Secretary General of the Singapore Swimming Association, member of Republic Polytechnic’s Board of Governors (including its Chairman of the School of Sports Health Leisure committee), member of Singapore To-talisator Board’s sports sub-committee, and advisor to ASICS Asia. Dr. Rukare is the President of the Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) and Board Chair of Special Olympics Uganda. Dr. Rukare is credited with turning around the USF during his tenure. Dr. Rukare also holds a number of sporting portfolios which include, Secretary Gen-eral of the Uganda Olympic Committee, Chairperson of the Uganda Olympic Merits and Award Commission, former head of the NOC legal commission, Vice President of African Swimming Confederation (CANA) and a Member of the FINA Masters Committee. Dr. Ru-kare is a former national swimmer who represented Uganda at national, regional and inter-national championships and held several national records between 1980- 1992. Dr. Rukare is an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda and a Legal Specialist with sound knowledge of International and Human Rights Law. He has over 20 year’s experience in the field of access to justice human rights, good governance and development cooperation. Dr. Rukare is a guest faculty member at Makerere University Uganda and the Center for Human Rights University of Pretoria South Africa.

Sam Ramsamy has over 60 years of experience in sport. First as an active athlete in several

sports, especially athletics, football and swimming. Besides his teaching diplomas, he also

holds a diploma of the Carnegie College of Physical Education, Leeds. He was president of

Swimming South Africa (1991-1996) and the National Olympic Committee of South Afri-

ca (1991-2004). Ramsamy was elected a member of the International Olympic Committee

(IOC) in 1995 and served on the IOC Executive Board (2006-2014). He has been a member

of the FINA Bureau since 1996 and is one of FINA’s Vice Presidents since 2004. He was a

consultant for the United Nations for several years. And has written several articles for the

United Nations and other international organisations on sport and social affairs. He also

authored “Apartheid the Real Hurdle” and “Reflections on a Life in Sport”. Ramsamy holds

Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Leeds Metropolitan, Surrey and Toronto. He

was a member of the Organising Committee for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the

first democratically elected President of South Africa. Ramsamy was awarded the Order of

Dr. Edgar Iván Ortiz Lizcano is a graduate from the University of Valle, specialising in ob-stetrics and gynaecology. Dr. Edgar Iván Ortiz Lizcano is President of the Latin American Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In addition to his role as a doctor, Dr. Ortiz has been characterised by a genuine scientific leadership, administrative leadership on the sports field. He was a consultant for PAHO in Washington, for guidance on basic design components of the Program of Education of Perinatology. Advisor in the development proj-ect Perinatal AIDS Intervention for Americas Region and Program Maternal Mortality Re-duction. Dr. Edgar Ivan Lizcano Ortiz was elected president of the Colombian Swimming Federation in November 2005.

Gianni began his journalistic career in 1967 in “Atletica Leggera” before becoming a con-tributor to prestigious newspapers including “Il Giorno”, “La Gazzetta del Popolo” and the “Corriere dello Sport-Stadio”. In 1972 Gianni took on his first role as television commenta-tor assistant for RSI and then for RAI. In 1974 he was employed by “Gazzetta dello Sport” as head of the athletics, winter sports and Olympic department. Gianni has since been the cor-respondent for 11 Winter Olympics and 10 Summer Olympics. He was present at more than 30 World Championships and European Championships in athletics and in skiing. In 1983 Gianni edited two sport encyclopedias for Rizzoli: “Conoscere l’atletica” and “Conoscere lo sci”. He has edited two volumes entitled “Atletica” and “Sci” part of the series “I grandi sport illustrati”. Gianni served as president of UEPS from 1984 to 1988, has been chairman of the Athletics commission since 1986, chairman of IAAF press commission since 2004, member of the IOC Press Commission and AIPS President since May 2005, having been re-elected to the latter in 2009 and 2013.

Katinka Hosszu’s Coach

Shane Tusup has been coaching and managing Katinka Hosszu since the London Olympic Games in 2012. His guidance has helped to spark a transformation in Katinka, leading her to two World Championship titles, three European Championships, eleven World Records, and he was the mastermind behind Katinka’s dominating Swimming World Cup perfor-mances over the last three years. Shane’s “out of the box” approach to training and racing throughout the season, has been the topic of many discussions and he has openly pushed the need for swimming’s biggest stars to compete more often at the top level in order to push the sport into a more professional level. In 2013, Shane was named Hungary’s Coach of the year, making him the first ever non-Hungarian to win the award. He is co-founder, along side Katinka, of Toos Sports Agency, an international sports agency and management company based out of Budapest, Hungary.

Michael Scott is currently the Performance Director for Swimming Australia leading the development and implementation of its High Performance Strategic Plan for the senior youth and talent programmes for the Olympic Pool and Open Water disciplines and the Paralympic programme. Prior to this he was the National Performance Director for Brit-ish Swimming for the period 2007 – 2012. Michael was also the CEO of the FINA World Swimming Championships Corporation delivering what was declared at that time by FINA “as the biggest and best FINA World Championships” in Melbourne, March 2007. He was named a Sport Industry Australia’s “Sport’s Great Achiever” in 2000 and appointed Chair-man (1999) and member of National Elite Sports Council until 2005. Michael’s expertise continues to be sought after being appointed as Honorary Secretary of the FINA Coaches Commission in 2013. Michael celebrated career in world sport and particularly the sport of swimming has him well placed to share with us his unique insights into the future of aquat-ics.

Born in 1961 in Switzerland Thomas’ association with OMEGA dates back to the early days of his career – in 1988 – when he started to work for OMEGA as Director of Advertising & Promotion for the Swiss Market. In parallel he continued to study marketing and communi-cation in order to enhance his expertise. As from 1997 his career turned towards marketing and communication where he worked at SWATCH (Swiss Market) as Director of Marketing & Communication. He then successively occupied different positions such as Sales Direc-tor, General Manager Retail and Brand Manager Swatch Switzerland, still within SWATCH until 2011. Thomas Schweizer thus brings a wealth of personal experience and knowledge to his current position as Head of Sales & Marketing at SWISS TIMING LTD – a company whose mission is to serve the Swatch Group brands in timekeeping sporting events. Thom-as’s relation to sport does not begin here. Sailing – but not only – occupies an important place in his life. From 1980 he was during 8 years a member of the Swiss Sailing team (cate-gory 470 and Tornado) and in 1988 he was part of the sailing team at the Olympics in Seoul.

Dr. Mountjoy is the Medical Director of the Health and Performance Centre Sports Medi-cine Clinic at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. She teaches sports medicine at McMaster University in the Faculty of Family Medicine in addition to holding the position as Director of Student and Resident Affairs at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medi-cine. Dr. Mountjoy is a FINA Bureau member and liaison of the Sports Medicine Commit-tee. She is also a member of the IOC Medical Commission (Games Group) and a member of the WADA Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee. Dr. Mountjoy integrates the IOC injury and illness task force researching and publishing the findings on the health and safety of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games in addition to the FINA World Championships. She is completing her PhD on aquatic athlete health. Dr. Mountjoy is a retired international level synchronised swimmer, and was a team physician for Synchro Canada for 25 years.

Mr Wouda is a former Swimmer (1979-2000) converted to a successful coach. As Swim-mer, Marcel Wouda has been three time Olympian (1992-1996-2000), Former World Champion in 200 individual medley (Perth 1998), and a former world record holder in 400 individual medley. He was the first and only Dutch male world champion in swimming. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he was part of the relay team on the 4x200m freestyle that won the bronze medal. Marcel Wouda is coaching with the Dutch Swimming Federation since 2003. Until 2006 he was a youth coach and trained Ranomi Kromowidjojo for medals at the European Youth Championships. Since 2006, Wouda is active within the National Swimming Centre Eindhoven (NED). In his career, Mr. Vergnoux has been coach at 3 Olympic Games (2004, 2008, 2012), coach of 17 Olympians, coach at the 10 World Championships, Belarus coach of the Year, two times Great Britain Coach of the Year , two times Scottish Coach of the Year, as well as two times Spanish Coach of the Year. Dr. Havriluk earned his Ph.D. in human performance, specialised in biomechanics. Rod has coached from age group to NCAA Division I. He is member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the American College of Sports Med-icine; and the American Swimming Coaches Association. He is currently the president of the International Society of Swimming Coaching. He serves on the advisory board for the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming; the editorial board for the Journal of Swimming Research. Dr. Havriluk’s research is focused on three primary areas: optimis-ing technique, preventing shoulder injuries, and accelerating skill learning. His research produced three US patents and prompted the development of software and hardware products, including Aquanex+Video (selected as a finalist for Product Design and Devel-opment’s 2003 Engineering Awards), and a biomechanical model of optimal technique. Dr. Havriluk articles have appeared in Swimming World; American Swimming Magazine; Swimming in Australia; Journal of Swimming Research; Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport; Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise; and Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming. He has developed instructional materials for swimmers and coaches and is cur-rently collaborating with a coach association to develop a comprehensive, science-based, coach certification programme.

DOHA 2014 INFORMATION

• The State of Qatar

Doha continues to grow and evolve rapidly, with the population of Qatar now having grown over 2 Million with over half of it

below the age of 30. The amazing blend of different nationalities and cultures makes the city an irresistibly interesting place

to be.

The Hamad International Airport, Doha’s new state of the art airport, has officially opened its doors. The new airport will raise

the bar even higher in terms of airport efficiency, improved passenger convenience and state-of-the-art service standards.

The airport will be able to handle 50 million passengers per year, accessing over 94 destinations worldwide, and will have the

second largest capacity in the region. The new airport is a 15-minute drive from Doha’s city center, where most of the hotels

are located.

According to the Qatar National Vision 2030, there is a plan to connect the present and future, focusing on human development

as one of its pillars. Qatar wants to equip its younger generation with the skills and motivation to contribute to society by

fostering participation in a wide variety of cultural and sports activities. Over the last decade, Qatar has established itself as

a leading country in the region for sports infrastructure by rolling out arenas of top international standard and hosting world-

class sporting events. The released calendar for 2014 in Qatar reaches more than 80 sport related events out of which 42 are

international level.

• Currency

Qatari riyal (QR). Each Qatari riyal is divided into 100 dirhams. Notes in circulation are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100

and 500. Coins worth QR 0.50 (fifty dirhams) and QR0.25 are legal tender but are rarely used. It is customary to round off to

the nearest whole number.

Exchange rate: fixed at US$1 = QR3.65

• Language

Arabic is the official language. However English is widely spoken and understood.

• Electricity

Voltage is 240 AC at 50 cycles. As for electrical sockets, British Style Plug with one grounding blade and two flat blades are

used. Plug adaptors can be find in any small supermarket around Doha.


• Weather in December

The 12th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) Doha (QAT) will be held in December, which is the start of the winter

season (December, January, and February) in Doha. The average temperature during the daytime is 15-30°C. In these months,

winds can be fresh to occasionally strong.

• Appropriate Clothing

Men and women should dress modestly as a courtesy to both Qataris and Muslims. Swimsuits and beachwear are acceptable

at the hotel beaches, but it is not appropriate to show too much skin in other public areas. Tops should cover the shoulders and

upper arms, and skirts or shorts should fall to or below the knee. Women are not obliged to cover their hair. Visitors should be

thoughtful of their clothing particularly in the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The extreme heat and high humidity of summertime means light-weight fibres are advisable (clothes made from ‘wicking’ –

high techpolyester - material are invaluable); covering up susceptible parts of your body whilst outside they will also prevent

sunburn. However a jumper or wrap may be needed inside malls, cinemas and restaurants, as the air conditioning can be fierce.

Wintertime can be chilly, especially in the evenings, and there is also a chance of rain, so coats and closed shoes will be useful.
