The Cynthia Davies Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to an individual or group who significantly contributes to the
performing fine arts in the Vanderhoof, Fort St James, Fort Fraser or Fraser Lake areas.
If you are aware of a person or group who meets the above requirements, the festival
committee is asking that you submit nominations by contacting Swan Kiezebrink at
250.567.9501. The festival association will announce the winner at the Festival Concert on
Sunday, March 19, 2017.
HISTORY
Cynthia Davies was a music and voice teacher who came to Vanderhoof from Ontario in 1959.
She taught piano and voice lessons in Vanderhoof and Burns Lake and was instrumental in
starting the annual Christmas Choir Concert, organizing musical productions by the Vanderhoof
Theatre Group and helping establish the Burns Lake Music Festival.
Cynthia saw a need for a grand piano in Vanderhoof and actively raised funds until the
objective was met. A special room was built at NVSS to house this community treasure.
When Cynthia left Vanderhoof in 1979, an award was established in her honor to recognize
other members of the community who have contributed significantly to the fine arts.

The Nechako Valley Music / Speech Arts Association would like to thank the Vanderhoof Christian

to have a festival.
A special thank you to SD 91 for printing up our Syllabus and Program, and Van Dolah Enterprises for
printing raffle tickets.
Also, a very special thank you goes to donors who responded to the request for financial assistance for
the Festival. It is through the generous contributions of individuals and businesses that so many people
have a chance to participate in such an event. Donors name will be published in the Express and will be

FESTIVAL ETIQUETTE
The Nechako Valley Festival of the Performing Arts is a small regional festival. We welcome participants of all ages and abilities, and we want you to have a fun and enjoyable experience! You will generally experience a much more relaxed atmosphere at our festival than you might at larger festivals. For a relaxed and enjoyable experience for all participants, and as a courtesy to our performers and adjudicators, we request that a few simple practices be observed by everyone:
1. Please do not enter the auditorium while a performer is on stage, or while the adjudicator is speaking.
2. Quiet talking between performances is certainly permissible, but please refrain from speaking while a performer is on stage.
3. Do not take flash pictures of performers during a performance. Quiet operation of video cameras from the back is usually not a distraction.
4. Performers: you will want to present your best possible performance for the enjoyment of the audience and the adjudicator. To achieve this, we suggest the following:
Introduce yourself and your choice of selection (include the author or composer, as appropriate). Use a positive, upbeat style of speech to set the stage for our enjoyment of your performance.
Say thank-you to the audience for their appreciation of your performance by ending it with a simple bow.
Please wear appropriate attire for your performances; do not detract attention away from your performance with inappropriate dress.
Don’t chew gum while on stage!
5. Adjudicator decisions are final. Participants, parents, and teachers are not allowed to question the adjudicator about his or her decision.
6. If you are honored with an invitation to perform in the Festival Concert, please dress up! We plan the Festival Concert in the middle of a Sunday afternoon to accommodate younger performers and those that might have to travel distances, so we ask that you make your plans such that you can stay for the entire concert. This is a huge courtesy to the other performers.
7. Please turn your cell phones off.
RELAX, HAVE FUN, AND ENJOY YOUR FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE! WE HOPE YOU COME BACK AND PERFORM AGAIN FOR US.
