I would like to take this opportunity to explain some of procedures for handling Covid-19.
1. Festivals will only operate if the region is in level 1. 2. If you are in a region that is higher than level 1, you will not be allowed to attend.
3. Once entries open, you may enter; however, please be aware that all admin fees are not refundable. This is due to the Society still having operational costs that we cannot wave.
Should you choose to enter any WCS Festivals in 2021, you do so with the risk of
cancellation at short notice and that administration costs are not refundable. 4. All parents, teachers (and competitors who are able to do so) are required to use the
COVID-19 QR code tracing app, that is available at all festivals. No Scan, No Entry. 5. If you are sick, unwell, or have been in a region higher than level 1, within 14 days of a
festival’s start date, please stay home.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding COVID-19 and our festivals, please contact me
via email.
In the meantime, stay safe and well through this COVID-19 lockdown.
Kind Regards,
Hayley Sellars,
WCS President.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Welcome to the Wanganui Competitions SocietyInc’sfirst Dance Festival in 2021. Welcome to
Adjudicators Alexandra Wiltshire & Colleen Bassett, competitors, parents, family, friends & teachers. I would like to especially thank those who are returning to the WCS. The continued
support shown to the Society isgreatly appreciated and we look forward to a fantastic festival
jam packed with outstanding performances. For those of you who are new to performing with us,
I can assure you that you are in for a real treat. The WCS strives to offer one of the very best
Competition Festivals in the country. Our aim is to consistently hold well balanced, fair and high quality (everything from the venue, operating systems and most importantly adjudicators)
festivals for tomorrow’s performers.
To the performers, I know that you will have a fantastic time with us here, performing at the Royal Wanganui Opera House. Before you go home, remember to thank your teachers for their classes
and the countless extra hours they put into their lessons. Thank your parents for their continued
support in getting you to lessons once COVID-19 restrictions lifted. Finally, give yourself a big
pat on the back for continuing to practice. With that being said, please ensure you sign in with
the COVID QR Code at the entrance, limit your time backstage with 1 parent/caregiver per family backstage and use the provided hand sanitizer. Masks may be required during this festival so
please bring one! I would like to take the time to also acknowledge all the hard work undertaken by our committee
and volunteers to host our festivals in 2021. It has been a long, bumpy road with more than
oneU-turnto get to this point. Your countless hours of dedication and commitment to the
competitors and society is truly appreciated. Asyouprepare for this festival, I would like to leave
you with one of my favourite quotes. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just
one more time.” — Thomas A. Edison

In her early years, Alex played various instruments, including violin, ‘cello, piano
accordion and pianoforte, performing in Wellington Eisteddfods, music theatre
societies and local orchestral groups, her first Musical Director role being, at
the age of 14 years, for Wellington Operatic Society. Alex also studied ballet for
several years, both in her early years, and late teens. In addition, Alex learned
classical singing with several teachers, including NZ Opera Company soprano,
Angela Shaw, in Wellington, and, later, Sister Mary Leo in Auckland, whose
students she accompanied in exchange for vocal tuition. For both ABRSM
classical vocal examinations, Grade 7(14yrs) and Grade 8 (16yrs), Alex had
the dubious ‘honor’ of being assessed by the well-known English composer,
Michael Head, whose Arts Songs are often featured in Eisteddford repertoire.
Alex achieved her L.R.S.M. (Pianoforte) a few weeks after her Grade 8 Singing
Exam – again, Michael Head examiner! Alex also studied conducting for several
years (early 20s), with the late Juan Matteucci at NZSM, Upper Symonds St,
Auckland, which ultimately afforded her the opportunity to share conducting
duties with Sir William Southgate, for several National Ballet seasons, including the Nutcracker Suite & Giselle,
and, subsequently, alongside James Robertson, for the National Opera’s production of Marriage of Figaro, making
her one of the first women professional conductors in NZ.
Around the same time, Alex also travelled, with the NZ National Ballet, to Brisbane as Conductor for several
short ballets featured in the Warana Festival – La Ventana, Witch Boy, Ragtime (Chris Jannides –
Choreographer – Limbs). Alex relished the opportunity to conduct the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, kindly ‘on
loan’ from conductor, Georg Tintner, just for the occasion. In her early 20s, Alex worked for TVNZ2,
Vocal, Piano & Instrumental LRSM (Pianoforte) (ABRSM); Grade 8 Singing (ABRSM) - B.Sc. (Psych.) Victoria University Wgtn NZ.
Grad. Dip. Applied Psych. Swinburne University; Melbourne Australia. - M.N.Z.A.C

Hargreaves St, Auckland, as a session musician for shows such as Radio Times, Stars on Sunday and 12 Bar
Rhythm & Shoes, and was a quiz ‘music’ researcher, writing questions for Mastermind and University Challenge,
under the ‘guidance’ of the iconic author/singer, Max Cryer, for several years.
Working at television introduced Alex to the likes of Billy T James, Tina Cross, Annie Crummer (Tracy ’80 TV
Program), Hudson & Halls, and, in particular, the late Ray Columbus, for whom she acted as Musical Director,
spanning a period of 4 years, both internationally, and in NZ. Shifting into the musical theatre genre, Alex was
Musical Director for Auckland’s Mercury Theatre productions of Godspell, Gershwin, The Boyfriend, and You’re a
Good Man, Charlie Brown, as well as Musical Directing touring shows such as Playing Our Song & Evita, in New
Zealand and Australia, and Big River (Sydney/Melbourne – Australia).During her 16 years of living in Australia,
Alex worked for the Cameron Mackintosh Production Company, Victoria State Opera, and The Really Useful
Company, on such commercial musical productions as CATS, Les Miserables, Aspects of Love, The Pirates of
Penzance & Phantom of the Opera, in a variety of roles including conductor/MD, repetiteur, keyboardist and
vocal coach.
Since 2002, Alex has participated in several productions for the Hamilton Operatic Society, including Grease,
The Full Monty, the Phantom of the Opera, as Repetiteur and Keyboardist, and as Musical Director/Conductor
for Mamma Mia (2015), The Rocky Horror Show (2016) and Les Miserables (July 2017). Alex spent six
years (2007-2012) as an accompanist for the touring company, Operatunity, both in NZ and overseas. Then
in 2016, she was invited to join the NZ Male Choir as Accompanist (Nth Island) and now really enjoys
supporting the choir in the diverse repertoire sourced by Joe Christensen, Musical Director/Conductor. The NZ
Male Choir toured to Australia in June 2018 and performed in combined NZ-Australian choir concerts in
Sydney, Adelaide, and Wagga Wagga. Alex is currently employed part-time as an itinerant NCEA vocal coach at
Taupo Nui A Tia College, and has also been Musical Director, at the college, for a range of Musical Productions,
including Footloose, Hairspray, and Rock of Ages. Alex also has several private vocal students who compete
both locally and nationally in Eisteddfords, as well as performing in local musical theatre productions and
concerts.
The Wanganui Competitions Society Inc is proud to be working with
Colleen Bassestt in 2021. As many of you will remember, Colleen was
to be out 2020 adjudicator, however due to COVID-19 lockdown
restrictions we were required to cancel our festivals. Colleen will be
joining the team to adjudicate this year’s Speech & Drama competition.
For the last forty years, Colleen has thrown her energy and passion into
teaching both Speech & Drama, and Public Speaking. For the fun of it,
she is also an actor and entertainer. Colleen will be joining the WCS team
from Cambridge.
As an Accredited Examiner of SpeechNZ and an Accredited Adjudicator with SCA(NZ), Colleen loves to celebrate
the achievement of performers and presenters. Using her love of language, she writes poetry and Play scripts to
meet the needs of different drama groups. Good luck to all of those who are competing in this Performing Arts
Festival, Colleen keenly anticipates viewing all candidates creative work at the WCS 2021 Speech & Drama
