From the Pastor

Good Steward Season

In 2007 we at St. Timothy celebrated our 50th anniversary of ministry. As a part of our festivities, we began a new practice, the presentation of the Good Steward Award. The award is given to a member of the congregation who best exemplifies the principles of Christian stewardship: the gracious giving of time, talent and treasure; selfless devotion to serving Christ and his people; faithfulness to the Christian disciplines of prayer and worship; a strong commitment to the ministry of St. Timothy Church. It had its origins in the congregation in which I did my pastoral internship way back in 1979-80, St. Michael and All Angels’ Lutheran Church, on the North Side of Pittsburgh. St. Michael’s was in a tough urban neighborhood, optimistically called Spring Garden. The eponymous avenue was a twisting street in a dark, narrow valley which had once been dotted with meat packing plants. In the old days cattle were unloaded from stock cars in the rail yards by the Allegheny River (near the famous H.J. Heinz Plant). They were then herded and driven up and over Troy Hill to Spring Garden Avenue, where they made their trek to oblivion. There was a time when these doomed beasts and their attendant stench crowded the street. Despite the pleasant sounding name, for most of its history the avenue was known as “the Gut,” a name far more descriptive than Spring Garden. By the time I arrived in Spring Garden the meat packers were long gone. No longer did plant workers occupy the frame houses that clung to the steep valley walls. Most of the folks in the

Page 5: 395 Valley Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470 · 395 Valley Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470 Saturday Worship 6pm sttimothynj.org The Rev. Robert M. Mountenay, Pastor ... 10/31 Connie Venturelli

neighborhood lived in poverty; many had been un- or underemployed for years. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, the neighborhood’s only church was flourishing. Buoyed by the strong leadership of my supervisor, Pastor Paul Kokenda, the people of Spring Garden found meaning and purpose in the life of the congregation. Although the rich liturgical life of St. Michael’s attracted members from outside of Spring Garden, most of the congregation’s members were residents of the neighborhood. The church kitchen hosted the local meals on wheels program, and the congregation housed the “Re-Run Shop” which offered lightly used clothing at low, low prices. Near the end of my tenure, ground was broken for St. Michael’s Village, a project that provided low cost housing for local seniors. St. Michael and All Angels’ Lutheran Church was truly the community’s center. Christ existed as community in Spring Garden. Recognizing the deep faith and hard work their fellow disciples, the congregation annually chose one of its number to receive the Good Steward Award. Inspired by their example (and responding to Debbie’s urging), I introduced St. Timothy’s Good Steward Award to highlight our 50th anniversary celebration in 2007. Nine years later, it’s time to choose once more that member of our fold who best exemplifies the virtues of Christian stewardship. Please see the next page for the nomination form! In Jesus’ name,

Pastor Robin Mountenay

Good Steward Award 2016

In 2007, as a part of our fiftieth anniversary celebration, we established a new tradition at St. Timothy, the annual presentation of the Good Steward Award. Our first Good Steward Award recipient was Dolores Monsees. Joe Suarez was Good Steward in 2008. Debbie and Robert Andersen were 2009’s Good Stewards. Anne Loffredo received the honor in 2010, Grace Flanders in 2011, Kathy Gormley in 2012, Eileen Smith in 2013, Cliff Konnerth in 2014, and Robin Koegel in 2015. Now it’s time for you to make your recommendation for our eighth annual Good Steward Award. Please fill out the attached form and return it by October 26. Recommendations will be considered by St. Timothy’s Congregational Council who will decide on the award’s worthy recipient. The Good Steward Award will be presented at our 10:30 service on Christ the King Sunday, November 22, 2015.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Please detach this form and return it to the

church office no later than October26, 2016. My recommendation for Good Steward, 2016 is: __________________________________________________________

MEMORIALS

Since August 15, 2016, gifts were given to the General Memorial Fund in memory of: Everett Lindros, friend of the Steible family John Sajban, father of Tom Sajban Eileen Anderson

and to the Memorial Garden Fund in memory of: Linda Loffredo, stepdaughter of Anne Loffredo

Refurbishing of the sanctuary walls has been completed. This is the gift of Joseph Suarez, in loving memory of his wife, Julie.

No Memorial Garden pavers were purchased this month, so our paver total stands at 108. The price of a paver is $300.00. Checks may be made to St. Timothy Memorial Fund, with the words “Memorial Garden” on the memo line. Pavers may be engraved with the names of deceased loved ones, or left blank for future engraving. Paver application sheets are available in the narthex.

Please see Pat Winters for further information or assistance. The Memorial Garden is self-supporting; gifts are welcome at all times!

We also welcome contributions to the fund for restoration and enhancement of our Church organ. The work is on-going and should be completed very soon. Checks may be made to St. Timothy Memorial Fund, with the words “Organ Repair” on the memo line.

We are grateful to all who have given to the St. Timothy Memorial Funds – the General Memorial Fund, the Music Fund, the George Laubscher Monday Morning Fund, the Memorial Garden Fund, the Eternal Light Candle Fund, and the Flanders and Schleer Scholarship Loan Funds – and for the faithful loan repayments.

The Flanders and Schleer Funds granted loans this fall to 5 of our young persons. We welcome contributions to these Funds, that we may continue to assist with the high price of college.

Have you used your journal over the summer? Let’s start again. Instead of

saying "I should write in my journal once a week," say "I could write in my

journal once a week." The word ‘should’ says that you must do it while

‘could’ is empowering, saying you have the right and capacity to decide

what you'll do. It’s a small change, but so helpful.

The suggested journal entry to get you started is: The best things I like about

the change in weather in the fall is...

Get your flu shot!

Never heard of October 1st being International Frugal day, but it sounds like

fun. Challenge yourself to enjoy the day without spending a penny. Where

would you start? The library, or a walk through leaves that are falling? What

other ideas can you come up with? Cheering at a soccer game. Oh my mind

is running now!

Lois Clapp says… to get a red wine stain out of clothing pour white wine on

it. She said it hurts to waste the white wine that way though.

Another National day that is new to me is October 13th. It's train your brain

day. Do math problems in your head instead of on the calculator. Memorize

a poem or, better still, a few proverbs. Easy to think of more of these too.

Have fun.

“There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart's desire. The other

is to gain it.” -George Bernard Shaw

Amen means ‘Yes, It shall be so.’ We say Amen because we are certain that

such petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven and are heard by

Him. For He himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has

promised to hear us. -from the small Catechism

Heart ‘n Hands Mission

Our September 23rd Hot BBQ & Cool Jazz Fundraiser was a great success. Nathan Eklund and his talented Friends performed two sets of Nathan’s original jazz compositions while 91 guests dined on a delicious dinner catered by

Bourbon BBQ. The music and food both drew rave reviews! Thank you to everyone who came out to support us, and a special thanks to Jennifer Andersen, hostess extraordinaire, for all of her help and guidance.

We are now switching gears and preparing for our Columbus Day of Service on Monday, October 10. Our St. Timothy family and members of the community are invited to come help us sort and box clothing from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Scout and youth groups, with adult supervision, are also welcome to take advantage of this community service opportunity. Bring a bag lunch if you like, we will provide light refreshments.

Our annual Blessing Bag Project is in full swing. Please place your donations of completed bags or travel size items in our bin at the top of the stairs. Our list of Blessing Bag items is in the envelope in the collection bin. Please take one, and pass on the information to friends who may wish to participate.

November 10 is the date of our Second Positano’s Dine & Donate event. Please mark it on your calendar and stay tuned for more information and the Dine & Donate Flyer.

Thank you to our St. Timothy family for the notes

and expressions of sympathy on the passing of

John Sajban. Your love and support was greatly

appreciated.

“PRAYER” is our theme this year for Sunday School and for the entire congregation. Every person who attended the God’s Work Our Hand’s picnic on Sept. 11 received a Prayer card with stickers. It will help you remember to Pray and why you did. Most people Pray in the morning, at meals and at bedtime. We are encouraging all ages to Pray at those times and for other things. God wants to hear from all of us often. You’ll never get a busy signal! We are asking that everyone bring their completed prayer cards back and post them on the "glass walls" at church. Let’s see how full those walls get.

The Heart “N” Hands outreach group is asking for the Sunday School to help with the Blessing Bags that they fill for the homeless and working poor in our area shelters. They would like us to help in donating travel size only Men’s Razors, Shaving Cream and Gold Bond Medicated Powder. The people only have enough space to carry travel sizes. Stores such as Harmon, Target and Walmart carry a wide selection of the specific travel size items. There will be a large container in the SonRise Café to donate these much needed items. And here’s a great idea; pray when you donate them! Even when you shop for them. We will be collecting until the end of October. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

“Christmas at Sea”

Time to think Christmas for the men and women who

sail the seven seas serving our needs. Holiday time can

be lonely when far, far from home. Seafarers &

International House ministers to the people in port

throughout the year, counseling, providing every facet

of pastoral care. It is a haven on shore, as well. At

Christmas, the chaplains visit ships in the harbor delivering gifts to over one

thousand seafarers. St. Timothy WELCA has been a partner in “Christmas at

Sea” for many seasons.

Will you help us to swell the number of gifts we will send? Below is a list of

suggested items most needed:

Sweatshirt – Large or XLarge

Socks – Crew

Large bar of chocolate or can of nuts

T-Shirt – Medium or Large

A basket will be in the Narthex to capture our booty and make “Christmas at

Sea” a success.

Angels Circle

The Angels will not meet for the month of

October so they can enjoy another season of the

Musicales.

We hope you had a chance to see some of the

quilts that were displayed on September 11th.

Thanks to everyone for their work.

Quilt kits are available to take home and sew. They are on the sewing

machine cabinet on the stage.

When finished, the tops can be returned and left on the cabinet.

Thanks, Barbara Kaplan
