Well, this month you get a perfect opportunity to “do unto others!”August 22 is “Be An Angel” Day, commemorated annually since 1993. Be an Angel Day is a warm invitation for everyone to “do one small act of service for someone; be a blessing in someone’s life.” If you take the time to do something nice for another person, you’re being an “Angel.” Once you notice how good it feels to be an angel, you might think about extending your kind nature throughout the year. Friendship Day August 2 is “Friendship Day.” While this was a popular observance many years ago, we don’t hear much about it these days. It’s time to bring it back, though! This holiday was introduced in 1919 and quickly caught on. So much so, that in 1935, Congress officially sanctioned it to be the first Sunday in August. Eventually, interest in this observance dropped off. It pays to be aware of how important our friends are to us. So do something nice for your friends and keep this day special. Veggie Burgers •1/2 cup chopped sweet onion •1 medium carrot, chopped (1/2 cup) •1 (15-oz.) can garbanzo beans, drained, rinsed •1 egg •1 teaspoon coarse salt •1/2 cup unseasoned dry bread crumbs or panko •1/4 cup chopped cilantro •2 tablespoons olive oil, divided •4 whole wheat hamburger buns, split Pulse onion and carrot in food processor until finely chopped. Add beans; pulse to chop. Add egg and salt; process until thick and slightly chunky. Place in medium bowl; stir in bread crumbs and cilantro. Shape into 4 patties about 3/4 inch thick. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Cook patties 8 minutes or until nicely browned on bottom. Carefully turn; add remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Cook 5 minutes or until burgers are slightly firm and hot in center. Serve on buns. 4 sandwiches Summertime Tips Summertime brings with it a multitude of activities. Picnics in the park, summer cookouts, or just laying in the sun. These events also mean visitors from the insect world. Here are some helpful and safe ways to keep these unwanted creatures away: Keep ants away with borders of cayenne pepper, clove or camphor oil, or lemon juice. Sometimes crushed mint, cucumber slices, or even coffee grounds keep ants from invading your space. For flies, try potpourri made of eucalyptus leaves, bay leaves, cloves, or penny-royal. Other methods of repellent are mint and camphor. Most people know that citronella candles are a good way to repel mosquitoes, but basil or tansy in planters around doorways will keep your home mosquito-free as well. To help keep those pesky pests from dining on your tender flesh, apply apple cider vinegar to your skin. Fleas can be controlled by combing your pets on a regular basis with a fine toothed comb dipped in soapy water. Citrus oil from a scored orange peel can be added to a pet’s coat as a natural repellent. Severe Weather Be prepared for strong or severe storms. Some suggestions are: • Make sure there are working batteries in your flashlights and portable radios in case of power loss. • Listen to weather reports frequently and carefully. Do not underestimate any watches or warnings since severe weather can occur quickly. • Respond quickly to severe weather warnings. Be prepared to take cover in an area in the center of your home which has the most structural support. Storms are not preventable, but being prepared may save injuries or worse. August Puzzler 1.
