Since our inception in 1984, Community Shares has raised nearly $14 million dollars for nonprofit organizations in Greater Cleveland, which in turn last year provided direct services to 100,000 people and direct action/advocacy to another 200,000 or more people. This record of accomplishment can be celebrated with pride as we look toward the future and reach toward rais-ing $2 million.

Social justice organizations are critical to the future of our city. Your support helps fund long-term solutions to the most pressing issues facing our community today—from civil rights to fair housing, to community development, to acces-sible healthcare and to economic and environ-mental health. Perhaps more importantly, the dollars Community Shares provides its members are unrestricted, allowing both the flexibility and security that nonprofits need more than ever in this volatile economy. Community Shares pro-vides excellent donor value, verified by the fact

that we recently were named an Accredited Charity by the Better Business Bureau.

Change—for the good—was indeed the action verb at Shares this year. Our leadership transi-tioned by saying farewell to Jacquie Talbott who served as Community Shares’ executive director from 2006-2008 and by welcoming Cynthia Ries in this role in January, 2009. And I was honored to succeed David Hammack as board president. Our membership grew to include two new or-ganizations, The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland and NAMI Greater Cleveland, and seven new campaign worksites were welcomed. We thank all our board and committee members and our countless volunteers for their commit-ment to serving. We appreciate your time, talent and treasure.

EmployEE Campaign managErs makE thE DiffErEnCE

The employee campaign manager at each worksite is critical to the success of our campaign. Without their efforts, the work of many of our member organi-zations would suffer. Each organization has its own approach. And none work harder than the team at the City of Cleveland, led by Tom Antonello. City employees were gener-ous this year making their campaign Shares’ largest.

Some employee campaign managers invite us to come and speak to their em-ployees. Others do “fun-raising” events. Some do totally “green” campaigns like Meaden & Moore. Cheryl Kelly was a trendsetter in the green campaign movement and has, for the last several years, run Meaden & Moore’s campaign electronically. This year, Cheryl’s hard work and the employees’ recognition of increased need in the community resulted in a nearly 50% increase in funds raised for Shares.

Cuyahoga County Public Library’s campaign theme was “Caring Can Change People’s Lives.” Employees there have a choice of giving to United Way and/or Community Shares. At the campaign kickoff, Sari Feldman, Executive Director, spoke about the importance of supporting the community and giving back. Mark McKinstry, Rose Ford and Judy Roberts all work to make the campaign successful and fun! In addition to employees’ gifts through payroll deduction, fabulous gift baskets were raffled off to benefit both federations. Jill Filicko manages the campaign at Tucker Ellis. This is the second year that Jill has conducted the campaign online and donations to Community Shares were up 39%.

At the Cleveland Public Library, Sharon Tufts assembled a group of new leaders to infuse this year’s campaign with energy. They held meetings at branch libraries, where employees engaged in lively question and answer sessions.

For a complete list of our 2008 workplace campaigns, see the back cover.

Thank you to all the employee campaign managers!

Community Shares raised the roof at its 2008 Campaign Kickoff on September 4th, held for the second year in a row at Cleveland City Hall. A Proclamation from the City was presented to Shares acknowledging the importance of its work to Cleveland’s future.
