OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY Do not operate with one hand. Seri-
ous injuryto the operator, helpers, orbystanders may result from one-handed operation. A chain saw is in-tended for two-handed use.
Operate the chain saw only in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
Do not operate saw from a ladder orina tree, unless you are specificallytrained to do so.
Make sure the chain will not make
contact with any object while startingthe engine. Never try to start the sawwhen the guido bar is in a cut.
Do not put pressure on thesaw, es-pecially at the end ofthe cut. Doingso can cause you to lose controlwhen the cut is completed.
Stop engine before settingsaw down. Hand carry saw onlywhen engine is
stopped. Carry with muffleraway frombody; guide bar & chain projectingbe-hind you; guide bar preferablycov-ered with a scabbard.
MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDER
Have all chain saw service performedby a qualified service dealer exceptthe items listed in the maintenancesection of this manual.
Make certain the saw chain stopsmoving when the throttletrigger is re-leased. For correction, refer to =Car-buretor Adjustments.
Keep the handles dry,clean, and fr_efrom oil or fuel mixture.
Keep caps and fasteners securelytightened.
Use only Craftsman accessories andreplacement parts as recommended.Never modify your saw.
HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION Donotsmokewhilehandlin_fuelor
whileoperatingthe saw. Eliminate all sourcesofsparksor frame
inareaswherefuelis mixedot poured. Mixandpour fuel inan outdoor area
andusean approved, marked con-tainerforall fuelpurposes.Wipeupall fuelspillsbeforestartingsaw.
Move at least 10 feet (3 meters)fromfueling site beforestarting.
- Turnthe engine off and let saw coolina non-combustiblerea, notondryleaves,straw,paper, etc. Slowlyre-movefuelcapand refuel unit.
Store the unit and fuel ina cool, drywell ventilated space where fuel va-pore cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electricmotors or switches, furnaces, etc.
GUARD AGAINST KICKBACKFollow all safety rules to help avoidkicl_back and other forces whichcanresult in serious injury.

WARNING: Rotational Kickback canoccur when the moving chain contactsan object at the upper portion of the tipofthe guide bar. Contact at the upperportion of the tip ofthe guide bar can
cause the chain to dig into the object,which stops the chain for an instant.Theresult is a lightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicksthe guide bar up and back.-towardthe operator.Pinch-Kickback and Pull-In occurwhenthe chain is suddenly stopped by beingpinched, caught, or by contacting a for-eign object in the wood. Thissuddenstopping of the chain results in a rever-sal ofthe chain force used to cutwoodand causes the saw to move inthe op-posite direction of the chain rotation.Pinch-Kickback drives the saw straightback toward the operator. Pu l*Inpulisthe saw away from the operator.

The throttletriggercontrolsenginespeed.THROTTLE LOCKOUTThe throttleockoutmustbe pressedbeforeyoucansqueeze the throttletrig-ger.This feature prevents you from ac-cidentallysqueezingthe tdgger.FAST IDLE LOCKThe fast idle lockholdsthethrottletrig-gerin the startingposition.Activatethefast idlelockby pressingthethrottlelockoutandsqueezingthe throttletrig-ger.Withthethrottletriggersqueezed,pressthefast idle lock. CHOKE KNOBThe Choke Knobactivates the choke to

GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OILThe chain oiler provides continuous lu-brication to the chain and guide bar. Besure to fluthe bar oil tank when you fillthe fuel tank (Capacity = 6.8 ft. oz.).For maximum guide bar and chain life,we recommend you use Craftsmanchain saw bar oil. If Craftsman bar oil isnotavailable, you may use a goodgrade SAE 30 oil until you are abletoobtain Craftsman brand. The oil outputis automatically metered during opera-tion. Your saw will use approximatelyone tank of bar oil for every tank of fuelmix. Always fill the bar oil tank whenyou filI the fuel tank,
FUELING ENGINEThis engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation,gasoline mustbe mixed with a goodquality 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend Craftsman brand oil. Mixgasoline and oil a t a ratioo f 40:t (A40:1 ratio isobtained by mixing3.2ounces of oil with 1 gallon of unleadedgasoline). DO NOT USE automotive oilor boat oil. These oils will cause enginedamage. When mixingfuel follow theinstructionsprinted on the container.Once oil is added to the gasoline,shake container momentarily to assurethat the fuel is thoroughly mixed.Always read and follow the safety rulesrelating to fuel before fueling your unit .
IMPORTANTExperience indicatesthat alcoholblendedfuels (caJled gesoho_r using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separationand formation ofackls duringstorage. Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage.To avoid engine problems, the fuel sys-tem should be emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank,start the engine and let it run until the fuel

NOTE: hen pulling the starter rope,do not use the fullextent ofthe rope.Do not let starter ropesnap back. Holdhandle. Let rope rewind slowly. Pull starter rope handle firmly and
quicklywithyour dght hand untiltheengine attempts to start';but no morethan5 pulls. Then, push inchokeknobto the partial position. Resumepulting handle until engine starts.
Above 401=, allow engine to run forapproximately 5 seconds. Push thechoke knob into the OFF position;
then squeeze and release throttletdg-ger to allow engine to idle.
Below 40F, allow engine to warm upfor 30 seconds to 1 minute withchokeat padial position. Push choke knob into the OFF position; then squeeze andrelease throttle trigger to allow engfneto idle.
Tos top engine, move On/Stop switchto the STOP position.
STARTING A WARM ENGINEDO NOT use the choke to start a warmengine or flooding and hard startingmay occur.
: Move On/Stop switch to ON.Set fast idle lock.Be sure choke is in the OFF position.With saw on ground, gdp front handlewith left hand and place your dght footthrough rear handle.
Pull starte r rope handle until enginestarts.
Squeeze and release throttle tdggerto return engine to idle speed.
DIFFICULT STARTING ORSTARTING A FLOODED ENGINEThe engine may be flooded if it has notstarted after 10 pulls. Flooded enginescan be cleared of excess fuel with thefollowing procedure:
Engage the fast idle lock. Verify that the On/Stop switch is inthe
ON position. Push choke knob to the OFF position. With saw onground, gdp front handle
with left hand and place dght footthrough rear handle.
- Puff starter rope handle until enginestarts.
Starting could require many pulls de-pending on how badly the unitisflooded. If engine still fails to start, re-fer to the TROUBLESHOOTINGchart orcall 1-800-235-5878.

ly du l a chain and increase the possbilityof kickback. Practice cutting afew smalllogs us
the followingsteps. This willhelp yogetthe "feel" of using your sawbeforyoubegina majorsawingoperation. Squeeze the throttletriggerand al-
low the engineto reach full speedbeforecutting.
Begincuttingwith thesaw frameagainstthe log.
Keep the engine at fullspeedtheentire timeyouare cutting.
Allow the chainto cutforyou. Exeonlylightdownwardpressure.
Releasethethrottletriggeras sooas the cutiscompleted,allowingtheengineto idle.If yourunthe sawatfull throttlewithouta cuttingload,unnecessarywear can occur.
To avoid losingcontrolwhencutiscomplete, do notputpressureonsawat end of cut.

Donotcutnearbuildings or electrical wiresif youdo nknowthe directionof tree fall, norcutnightsince you willnot be able toseewell,nordudngbadweathersuchasrain, snow,orstrongwinds, etc. Carefullyplanyoursawingoperation

Study the natural conditions thatcancausethe treeto fall ina particulardirection. Theseconditionsnclude: The winddirectionand speed. The leanofthe tree.The leanof a

plumb or level to determine the di-rection of tree lean.
Weight and branches on one side. Surrounding trees and obstacles.
Look for decay and rot. Ifthetrunk isrotted, it can snap and fall toward theoperator. ....
Make sure there isenough room forthetree to fail. Maintain a distance of2-1/2tree lengths from the nearestperson or other objects. Engine noisecan drown out a warning call.
Remove dirt, stones, loose bark,nails, staples, and wire from the treewhere cuts are to be made.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell largetrees_ A notch is cuton the side of thetree in the desired direction of fail. Aftera felling cut ismade on the oppositeside of tree, thetree will tend to fall inthe direction ofthe notch.
NOTE: If t ree has large buttress roots,remove them before making the notch.NOTCH CUT AND FELUNG TREE Make notch cut by cutting the top of
the notchfirst. Cut through 113ofthediameter of the tree. Next completethe notch by cutting the bottom. Seeillustration. Once the notch iscut, re-move the wedge of wood from tree.

Afterremovinghe wood, make thefellingcutonthe oppositesideofthenotch.Thisis done by making a cutabouttwo inches higher than thecen*terofthe notch.This willleaveenoughuncutwood between thefell-ingcutandthe notch to form a hinge.

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete,use wedges to open the cut whennecessary to controlthe direction of fall.TOavoid kickback and chain damage,usa wood or plastic wedges, but neversteel or iron wedges. Bealert to signsthat the tree is ready
to fall: cracking sounds, widening ofthe fellingcut, or movement in the up-per branches.
As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put itdown, and get away quickly on yourplanned retreat path.
Be extremely cautious with partiallyfallen trees that may be poorlysup-ported. When a tree doean't fall com-pletely, set the saw aside and pulldown the tree witha cable winch,block and tackle, o[ tractor. D.o_notuse yoursaw to cut down a partiallyfallen tree.
CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)Bucking isthe term used for cutting afallen tree to the desired log size.WARNING: Do not s tand on the logbeing cut. Any portioncan rollcausinglossof footing arid control. Do not standdownhillof the log being cut.IMPORTANT POINTS Cutonly one log at a time. Cut shattered wood very carefully;
sharp pieces ofwood could be flungtoward operator. Use a sawhorse tocut small togs.
Never allow another person to holdthe log white cutting and never holdthe log with your leg or foot.
Do not c ut in an area where logs,limbs, and roots are tangled. Drag logsinto a clear area beforecuttingthem.

CLEAN FUEL FILTERTo clean fuel filter,drain your unit byrunning dry of fuel, remove fuel cap/re-tainer assembly from tank. Pullfilterfrom tank and remove from line. Cleanwith milddetergent and rinse. Drythor-oughly, reassemble.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTWARNING: The chain willbe movingduring most ofthis procedure. Wearyour protective equipment and observeall safety precautions. During the lowspeed mixture adjustment recheck idlespeed after each turn ofthe screw. Thechain must not move at idle speed.Carburetor adjustment is critical and ifdone improperly can permanently dam-age the engine as well as the carbure-tor. There are three adjustmentscrews
onthe carburetor. They are labeled H, L,and 1".They are IQcated in the'area justabove the primer bulb.CARBURETOR PRESET_When making adjustments, do not forcethe plastic limitor caps beyond thestops or damage will occur.if carburetor presets are not needed,proceed to "ldte Speed-T. "rum both mixture screws counter-
clockwise until they stop. Turn the idle speed screw clockwise
until it stops. Now turn counterclock-wise 4-I/2 full turns.
Start motor, let it run for 3 minutes, andproceed to the adjustment section. Ifengine does notstart, refer to treuble-shooting chart orcall 1-800-235-5878.If engine performance is acceptable atthe preset positions and there is nochain movement at idle, no further ad-justment is necessary.
ADJUSTING PROCEDURE
Idle Speed-TAllowengine to idle. Adjust speed untilengine runswithout chain movement orstalling. , Turn clockwise to increase engine
speed ifengine stallsor dies. Turn counterclockwise to decrease
speed.No further adjustments are necessary ifchain does not move at idle speed andif performance is satisfactory.Low Speed Mixture-LAllow engine to idle. Then acceleratethe engine and note performance. Ifen-gine hesitates, bogs down, or smokesduringacceleration, turn mixture screwclockwise in lt16-tum increments untilperformance is satisfactory. Repeat thisprocedure as necessary for proper ad-justment. After completing adjustments,check for acceleration and chain move-ment at idle. Reset if necessary.
High Speed Mixture-HDO NOT operate engine at full throttlefor prolongedped0ds while making ad-justments. Damage to the engine canoccur.Make a test cut, Based on per-formance ofthe saw while cutting, ad-just the highSpeed mixture setting in1/16-turn increments as follows: Clockwise until saw has good power in
the cut with no hesitation. Do not adjustby sound or speed,but judge by howwe_l the saw performs in the cut.
Counterclockwise if the saw hasspeed, but dies in the cut or lackspower in the cut.
After completing adjustments, check foracceleration and chain movement atidle. Reset if necessary.Acceleration Checkif the engine d_esor hesitatesinstead ofaccelerating, turn the low speed mixtureadjustment counterclockwiseuntil youhave smooth accelerationwith no chainmovementat idle. Recheck and adjust asnecessary for acceptable performance.
