Design 351
• Catalogue Description:
• Prerequisite: AENG 321
• Studio on designing in behavioral and socio-cultural contexts. Students are required to think of architecture from the “inside-out” approach. Design will be generated through the study of behavioral use of space. Issues of age, gender, culture and individuality as well as complex functional relationships will be examined in their
influence on architectural design. The nature of human behavior and how it can be incorporated, facilitated, modified and influenced through architectural design is emphasized.
Topics:• Experiencing architecture: cognitive, emotional and
behavioral consequences of design• Human behavior- quantitative and qualitative aspects• Culture, society and use of space• Expressing human needs and values through design• Architectural programming based on understanding
human needs• Reflection on design criteria related to special users
needs and activities• Analytical approach to design process
Course Objective:• Familiarize students with the basic concepts and practice of architectural design with
emphasis on activity and related functional program as it incorporates all human aspects including perceptual, cognitive, behavioral and affective dimensions.
Course Outcomes:• After completing the course, students should be able to:• Develop and practice critical analysis of designed environments from inside out.• Identify & utilize humanistic/contextual concepts and principles in architectural design.• Externalize design thinking and consciously plan and design architectural spaces focusing on
human behavior and needs.• Design residential and/or public environments with human factors as primary objective.• Communicate effectively with peer architects.• Acquire & apply Design representation techniques and skills through the use of different
media for communicating ideas
