St. Jerome Students Visit Challenger Learning Center As we continue to expand our STEM program at St. Jerome, students in grades 5 through 8 enjoyed a STEM field trip to the Challenger Learning Center in Woodstock, IL. The day included a simulated space mission based on a real NASA mission, plus a Robotic Engineering and Digital Starlab session. Three STEM experiences all wrapped into a day of discovery and hands on learning result in a one-of- a-kind STEM experience! The specific mission was the Expedition Mars Simulated Space Mission. The year is 2076 and a human habitat has been established on Mars’ moon, Phobos. A large transport vehicle ferries astronauts and scientists between the base on Phobos and the Martian surface where a handful of facilities are in use including greenhouses, mineral processing fa- cilities, and research labs. The team must work to- gether to conduct research and search for evidence for life on Mars! After the search for life on Mars, it was off to Ro- botic Engineering, where they had the opportunity to use the Cubelets robotics system. They then vis- ited the Digital Starlab to learn about meteors, as- teroids, comets and more! Pictured: Some of the eighth grade students working in the space lab. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. ARV

Need a Lawyer? Talk to a Lawyer for free on

Saturday, January 19th   Attorneys with the Chicago Bar Association’s Call-A-Lawyer Program will be available to take calls from the public and offer brief legal advice on Saturday, January 19th, as part of an ongoing legal public service program offered by the CBA.   Calls will be accepted Saturday, January 19th from 9 a.m. to noon at 312-554-2001. Call-A-Lawyer events are typically held on the third Satur-day of each month in the morning hours.   Citizens can call in and briefly explain their situ-ation to an attorney who will then work to suggest self-help strategies or provide advice to help resolve their issues. If callers need further legal services, or have questions beyond the scope of the attorney’s practice area, they will be advised to contact the CBA Lawyer Referral Service during the week for a referral to an attorney in the appropriate area of law. Lawyers are experienced in the following: -Domestic Relations, including divorce, custody, support and other family law matters; - Personal Injury including auto accidents, slip and falls, products liability, wrongful death, malpractice and other types of injury cases. - Estate Planning, including will and trust drafting, probate and will contest. - Real Estate, including buying or selling real estate, foreclosure defense and landlord/tenant issues. - Employment Law, including wrongful termination, harassment and discrimination.

De La Salle Receives Grant from NASA   De La Salle proudly announces that it has received a Regional Challenge – Program Growth grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 2019.   De La Salle is one of 138 educational institutions from across the country to receive one of these grants and one of only three educational institutions from the state of Illinois.   The Regional Challenge grants are available to teams that are participating in regional competition events. The grants provide funding to cover the registration costs for the selected event.   First Robotics Competition scholarships are limited to high school students who are involved or planning to get involved in school-related robotics clubs or organizations. These clubs and organizations must have

the intention of inspiring students to pursue higher education and careers in Science, Technology, En-gineering and Math (STEM), as well as working with schools and teachers to integrate robotics edu-cation into their daily curriculum.   De La Salle is considered a “Rookie” team as it is entering the First Robotics Competition for the initial time.   “It's pretty cool to be selected by NASA’s Robot-ics Alliance Project,” De La Salle Applied Sciences and Mathematics faculty member and Robotics Club moderator Ian Mc-Nair said. “The fact that they looked at what we are doing and planning to do and want to help us build that is awesome.”   “The grant is specifi-cally being used for reg-istration into the FIRST Robotics Challenge, which is pretty expen-sive. It will help us pay for parts as well as the competition we will be a part of next year.”   Congratulations to the students and faculty as-sociated with the De La Salle Robotics Program on receiving this presti-gious accolade!
