PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

CHELFORD MARKET TO CLOSE AT END OF MARCH

The Directors of Wright Marshall are disappointed to confirm that Chelford Market will hold it’s last

sale on 30th March. The Landlords at Chelford have entered into a conditional contract to sell the site

to a development company.

Business will therefore cease at one of Britain’s best-known and most diverse Auction Centres, with

the loss of a number of jobs, and with an expected significant impact upon the rural economy

regionally.

It is understood that the purchasers require vacant possession of the site prior to submitting a detailed

planning application for housing, presumably to remove any concerns held by planning officers and

councillors in appearing to be complicit in closing down the auction business at Chelford.

An extension to the current lease has been granted only until the end of April.

This is a bitter disappointment to the Directors of Wright Marshall, who have been striving for many

years to provide a suitable site for relocation. A planning consent for a new market upon a site at

Middlewich was obtained in March 2014, in conjunction with developers Pochin, but planners deleted

sufficient of the original application to render the permission granted unviable. Subsequent attempts

to renegotiate terms upon that site have come to nothing, nor have the firm been successful in

applications for grant funding from a number of sources.

Good progress has been made on other options recently, and the firm had been attempting to

negotiate a longer extension to the lease at Chelford to enable completion of a deal to move the

business to a new site to coincide with moving out of Chelford.

Wright Marshall, however, remain committed to providing an Auction sales service to the Agricultural

and Rural community, and are continuing with negotiations over a possible new site.

In the short term, the existing Chelford business will be relocated to the firm’s other Auction Centre at

Beeston Castle, where plans are currently being put into place to accommodate the diverse range of

sales currently operated.

345 REARING CALVES (Not for export) Auctioneers: Jonny Dymond 07703 676227 and Jonty Cliffe 07595 453306

Numbers remaining tight after two weeks of grand weather buyers are looking to fill sheds with rearing calves while the conditions for rearing are favourable. Great to see buyers present from all over the surrounding counties and as far a field as Pwllheli, no matter where you are in the UK it is never too far to come to Beeston. Currently all Livestock Auctions are in the midst of a battle against supermarkets desire for an integrated supply chain, our transparent trading platform we conduct each week keeps the farmers together ensuring YOU are price MAKERS not price TAKERS. Please bear that in mind whoever and wherever you are reading this support your Local Auction because a short term gain could be a long term loss! 61 Continental Bulls The edge off the trade for the medium bulls after last weeks flyer, still the best flew to £402 for a cracking Charolais from Barry Williams, Wrexham. Not the strength in the blues but a 3 week old from VP Challenor realised £378, plenty of buyers operating on the medium bulls from £270-£310, Simmentals realised £370 for L E Weston & Sons. Their a significant demand for the well-bred and well-shaped calves, big is not always beautiful and often buyers are happier to give more for a younger calves with the potential. 36 Continental Heifers Not many weeks in the year do the heifers outperform the bulls but they did today! A superb Blue heifer calf from weekly supporter David Green flew to £405, the calf before that a super Simmental Heifer from J R Ward realised £382. Far more demand for heifers than experience at the turn of the year and many many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage. 76 Native Bulls WHERE ELSE CAN YOU HAVE THE CHOICE! A super trade top by a real Bullock Maker from L E Weston at £308, others to £272, smaller planner angus today trading at £160-£200. Herefords to £302 for RJ & J Blockley’s wonderful calf. Beef Shorthorn x to £132. Generally the Herefords today traded £40 behind their Angus Countparts. Are you after come because some of these younger bulls want buying. 53 Native Heifers Second quality would be the best sold on the day. The best calves selling to £182 today for an Angus from HV Wright & Son Ltd, Herefords just £2 less at £180 for DG & R Hughes. A lovely batch of heifers could have been put together today from £100-£140 individually well sold but a lovely batch to rear for somebody. 110 Dairy Bulls A huge leap in the trade for B&W with many calves £20-30 dearer on the week with only the very smalls sticking at £20. Good backed calve readily over £70 with the best rearing sorts to £158 for the pick of a sensational run from CB Davies & Partners, others £132 £130, Brookside farming to £118, DG & R Hughes £115. A lovely show of calves just a shame we didn’t have 100 more as we had the buyers ready for them!

109 CULL COWS 10.00am Auctioneer: Simon Lamb 07815 188125

Topping at 149.0p or £1144

Beeston cull cows finish Friday trading with a bang! I cannot be underestimated the level of trade seen through a live ring currently. With some vendors quoting that they are upwards of £100 back on cows sold direct rather than through the ring at Beeston. Meagre number forward today considering the level of trade seen, with ever cows sold through the ring today of dairy origin! To see averages for everything sold, including the plainer cattle and foreign tagged animals at 111.74ppk or £725 per life just emphasises the trade seen. As is the case for all auction centres we do not discriminate, we have buyers for every commodity, weight, shape and nationality. Just proven by V P Challoner who sold his foreign tagged 7yo cow for £965. Moving forward to next week, culls moving to a Thursday! All current buyers will be present with the added bonus of some new faces, who have all promised to be present at Beeston since the unfortunate closure of Chelford. Best dairies soaring through the 130’s today with very very little under the £1pk mark (with some channel island breeds the exception). If anyone has an queries regards the marketing of their culls, the movement of selling days, transport is readily available from all parts of the country or just a chat regarding current trade please don’t hesitate to call Simon Lamb on 07815 188125. Today’s market average (all black and white), coming in at 111.74ppk or £725.08 per head. (Everything in, including the lean, mean, lame and loopy!) Black and white cows traded throughout the day at 120p to 140p for meated cows(130p to 150p younger models), 110p to 125p for steakers, 90p to 105p for stronger plain cows and 70p to 90p there after!

COMMERCIAL DAIRY HERD SELLS TO £1580 AT BEESTON

The Dispersal of the entire milking portion of the non-milk recorded unregistered herd of commercial dairy cattle was dispersed at Beeston Castle Auction on Tuesday, 28th March on behalf of H A Challoner & Sons of The New Pale Farm, Manley, Nr. Frodsham, Cheshire who have decided to cease milk production. The cows were calved in two strict calving blocks – August to October and January to March – and were bred for a low input system based on grass. The cows were mainly either by Holstein, British Friesian, NZ Friesian or Swedish Red Bulls. There were no individual recordings either for daily yield or cell count. A good crowd of very keen bidders were in attendance particularly from the locality but buyers from Staffordshire, Shropshire, Lancashire, North and Mid Wales all made their presence felt. Demand was great throughout the sale and perhaps the trade of the day was for those calving in the autumn and the older they were the more well sold they appeared. However all the top prices were for animals who had calved in the winter block with the top bid being £1580 for a second calf daughter of the Kiwi cross bull, Priests Solaris that had calved in early January. She was purchased by Peter Stone of Stone, Staffordshire who also purchased who also purchased a very fresh second calver by Huddlestobe Spooky at £1550 and two other second calvers by the New Zealand bulls, Ewing Rocksolid McCoy and Mortensons We Awe at £1420 each. Nick Layton travelled up from Herefordshire and purchased a nice load of fresh young cows and heifers for his farm at Kington and gave £1550 for a second calf daughter of Mortensons We Awe who calved 10 days and £1500 for 20 days fresh second calver by another NZ sire, Van Straalens Harrier. The autumn calving block were in great demand almost irrespective of what they looked like with lots of the best younger cows making £1200 or above and up to £1360 for a daughter of the British Friesian sire, Bradash Tournament who was due in August with her third and sold to AL Charmely of Guilsfield, Powys. A small group of heifers due in August and September sold very well and up to £1120 for a daughter of the American sire, Hendel Bacardi which sold to JA & MH Wright of Sandbach. AVERAGES: 132 Cows and Milking Heifers £1000.60; 41 Autumn calved Cows and Heifers Not in-calf or three quartered £600.34; 11 Served Heifers £941.82.
