They had students there as young as thirteen years old and made the comment that without aid from outside Christians they simply wouldn’t be able to exist. We then stopped at Bethlehem Uni- versity and listened to the students both Muslim and Christian about the difficulties they faced with the wall that was being built and the uncertainty of being able to complete their edu- cation. We were then treated by one of the finest meals of our trip cooked by the student’s culinary class. When we went to Jordan we found that there where over 3 million refugees that had been taken in from the war torn areas of Syria and Iraq and that the government was spending 25% of its budget to resettle them. There’s no question our Christian brothers and sisters are in need of our prayers and support. Please pray for the Christians in the Holy Lands. –Deacon Kurt

The Holy Lands

Welcome home to the 45 pilgrims that just got back from the

Holy Lands. It was an eye opening and life changing experi-

ence for all of us. The pilgrimage was organized by the

Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher who have dedicated

themselves to the upkeep of the holy sites and the care and

wellbeing of Christians in the Holy Lands. There was so much

to see and absorb that many of us were overwhelmed by it all

and it will take some time to discern everything. One thing

that I think had an effect on all of us was the plight of the

Christians in the Holy Lands. In Israel they are caught between

the Jews and the Muslims. Several decades ago their popula-

tion was 13 % but today they’re around 2% in Israel and 3% in

Jorden. Early in the pilgrimage we stopped at Beit Jala Semi-

nary for the first Mass of our trip. We were met by the semi-

narians and the director. They were very gracious, gave us a

tour, and answered many questions that we had. They had

students there as young as thirteen years old and made the

comment that without aid from outside Christians they simply

wouldn’t be able to exist. We then stopped at Bethlehem Uni-

versity and listened to the students both Muslim and Christian

about the difficulties they faced with the wall that was being

built and the uncertainty of being able to complete their edu-

cation. We were then treated by one of the finest meals of our

trip cooked by the student’s culinary class. When we went to

Jordan we found that there where over 3 million refugees that

had been taken in from the war torn areas of Syria and Iraq

and that the government was spending 25% of its budget to

resettle them. There’s no question our Christian brothers and

sisters are in need of our prayers and support. Please pray for

the Christians in the Holy Lands. –Deacon Kurt

Thanksgiving Day Food Drive and

Special Collection

At the Thanksgiving Day Mass we will be holding a special food

drive for Covenant House Alaska.

Covenant House Alaska has served thousands of youth, ages 13-

20, through their Crisis Center, Community Services Center, and

Transitional Living Programs since 1988. They are open 24/7 to

provide the food, shelter, and much needed care to our youth in

crisis through a multitude of services which offer support and life

skills to help them put their lives on the right track and become

self-sufficient.

At this mass we will be collecting “kid friendly foods”, healthy

snacks, lunch box items, juices, puddings, fruit cups, individually

wrapped foods, etc.… that can be handed out through their out

reach program to at risk kids. We invite your kids to shop with you

to purchase those food items that they would enjoy.

We will also be having a special collection for the Outreach Minis-

try which provides short-term financial assistance to those in our

community in crisis for such items as utilities and rent with the

cooperation of the St. Vincent De Paul Society.

We thank you for your support and may your generosity be

blessed. For questions please call Alexandra at 830-1610.

Peace & Justice “Racism is a sin: a sin that divides the human family, blots out

the image of God among specific members of that family, and

violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be

children of the same Father.”

From “Brothers and Sisters to Us,” USCCB, 1979

US Conference of Catholic Bishops Annual Assembly opened

last week in Baltimore with conversations touching on a num-

ber of social justice issues including racism and immigration

along with more usual discussions on conscience protection

and right-to-life issues. In fact, in review the USCCB has been

speaking out on a number of issues that are often overlooked

in the media. An update to “Brothers and Sisters to Us” is

forthcoming; collaboration with Caritas Internationalis, CRS

and Catholic Charities USA, in the “Share the Journey” cam-

paign provides resources on behalf of immigrants, refugees

and migrants. Our bishops have also been outspoken about

the impact of proposed tax cuts on those most in need; they

have also addressed climate change and poverty.

First World Day of the Poor, November 19th: Pope Francis

called for Christian communities to mark the occasion with

"moments of encounter and friendship, solidarity and concrete

assistance" with people living in poverty. It is also the week-

end for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development collec-

tion, the primary source of funding for CCHD's programs aimed

at fostering a culture of life and hope in communities across

the nation. Twenty-five percent of funds collected remain in

each diocese to support local anti-poverty projects.

I would like to thank all our parents, parishioners and guests

who attended our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School 34th Auction. It

is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we are so blessed for

the support we have received. I would especially like to thank

our wonderful auction Chairs – Karin O’Connell, Amy Locke and

Lindsie Jansen, who did an amazing job.

The month of November is a time for being thankful for all our

many blessings. We also like to remember those who are less

fortunate than ourselves. The school community is collecting

items to provide Thanksgiving Dinner for families from Head

start.

Kindergarteners are counting how many green bean cans they

are collecting. Each class is collecting a different food item and

we are hoping many turkeys will be donated. We would love to

see a Happy Thanksgiving for all.

Kathy Gustafson, Principal

First graders just read a book called Flat Stanley by

Jeff Brown. In the book, Stanley is a character that

gets flattened by a bulletin board. Each of the chil-

dren made their own Flat Stanley to have. We are

doing creative writing with our Flat Stanley this

week.

Lisa Orizotti, First Grade

4th grade students are learning about the environment of the

southeastern states. This week they learned about the “buried

treasure” of coal as a natural resource within the south-

east. They were amazed at how the coal mining industry has

been transformed by technology since the 1800’s and early

1900’s.

Laura McLaughlin, Fourth Grade

Second graders were so excited to make their

First Reconciliation this last week. Here are a

few comments from the children on how they felt

after their first reconciliation:

After my first Reconciliation I felt fresh because I got all my

sins out. – Ellen

After my First Reconciliation I felt light because I

didn’t have that much weight on me. – Romilly

After my First Reconciliation I felt like a bird, because I felt

light. – Tomasz

After my First Reconciliation I felt great because it cleared

my heart. – Johannes

After my First Reconciliation I felt good and happy because

my heart was gone of bad things.

– Landon

After my First Reconciliation I felt light as a feather because

I was happy. – Makayla

Kristin Starr- Second Grade

“Create in me a clean heart, O God!” Serious Christians know

that Lenten study and self-examination will convert their hearts,

deepen their relationship with Christ, and prepare them for a

joyful Easter.

This year, St. Elizabeth’s is offering a 7-session DVD-based series

on conversion, presented by Bishop Robert Barron of Word on

Fire Ministries. Examining six Biblical characters, Bishop Barron

helps us recognize how Christ calls ordinary people to be extraor-

dinary disciples. The program study guide and group discussion

will help us identify the barriers that keep us from being as ex-

traordinary as Christ call us to be.

Please join us! Registration at SEAS begins after the Christmas

holidays. Participants can choose to attend Monday 7-9 pm or

Wednesday 6-7:30 am sessions. Class begins on Monday Janu-

ary 29 and Wednesday January 31, 2018.

Health Ministry

6 Reasons to Be Thankful

When you thank your friends and family this upcoming holiday

season, the reasons to do so may extend beyond good wishes,

and actually benefit you and your health. Study after study has

shown that social connections - through family, friends or with

companion animals - seem to pay off in terms of good health,

longevity and even prolonged survival among patients with very

serious diseases. Some evidence linking good health with

strong ties to family and friends includes:

1. The immune system's natural killer cell activity is negatively

affected by three "distress indicators" - one of which is lack

of social support.

2. One study of 75 medical students found that those who

were lonely had more sluggish natural killer cells than stu-

dents who were social.

3. Research has shown that people who care for companion

animals have less illness than people who do not. Compan-

ion animals' owners also recover from serious illness faster.

4. Susceptibility to heart attacks appears to correlate with how

often people use the words "I," "me" and "mine" in casual

speech.

5. Believe it or not, studies show that people who get out and

spend more time with others during cold and flu season

actually get fewer episodes of colds or flu than those who

choose to be alone.

6. Being grateful for what you have has been associated with

both physical and emotional health.

SUPPORT FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS

CONSIDERING ADOPTION

25 years ago I gave birth to a baby boy and … lovingly placed him

into the waiting arms of his parents. …I pray that his life has been

full of joy, laughter, and abundant love. My thoughts and prayers

also turn to my beautiful family and friends that lifted me up then

and now. – Maya*

…Maya emphasizes the importance of offering ongoing support to

expectant mothers considering adoption… [and] makes the follow-

ing suggestions.

Let compassion guide your actions—always.

Consider whether your words and actions consistently convey

understanding, compassion, and empathy….

As Cardinal O’Malley once noted while chair of the bishops’

Committee on Pro-Life Activities, to a pregnant woman in crisis,

adoption is often seen as worse than either raising or aborting an

unexpected baby. Placing a child for adoption is “perceived as a

kind of double death. First, the death of self by carrying the baby to

term,” and second, “the death of the child thru ‘abandonment.’” …

So first focus on encouraging her that she can carry this baby to

term.

Reassure her that she can “breathe.”

…To women with an unplanned pregnancy, Maya says, “This

is survivable. Have hope.”

…Reassure her that she doesn’t need to resolve everything

right away. She will eventually have to make decisions on parenting

or adoption, but for now, she can just breathe. Maya explains this

reassurance helped her consider what she wanted for her life,

which, in turn, made it possible for her to consider adoption.

Love her for herself….

Affirm that adoption is a loving choice….

Help her see beyond her pregnancy.

…At the same time, be particularly careful not to trivialize her

motherhood or the difficulties she may be facing….

Keep reaching out, and encourage her to seek support services, if

needed….

…Be aware that this season of transition can be difficult as

the mother and her family mourn the baby’s absence and adjust to

a new normal…. Help them hold onto hope….

Please be generous in this week’s second collection

for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

In the United States, one in six people lives in pov-

erty. With this collection you support programs that

address the causes of poverty and provide a sustain-

able future for those who are struggling across the

country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected

remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty pro-

jects. Please prayerfully consider how you can sup-

port this collection and work on the margins. More

information about the Catholic Campaign for Human

Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/
