INTRODUCTION

A library is a treasure-house of knowledge or to be more precise with thedefinition: library is an organized collection of resources made accessibleto a defined community for reference or borrowing. It provides physicalor digital access to material, and may be a physical building or room, or avirtual space, or both. Libraries range in size from a few shelves of booksto several million items.

A school library is a library within a school where students, staff, andoften, parents of a public or private school have access to a variety ofresources. The goal of the school library is to ensure that all members ofthe school community have equitable access "to books and reading, toinformation, and to information technology." School libraries aredistinct from public libraries because they serve as "learner-orientedlaboratories which support, extend, and individualize the school'scurriculum. A school library serves as the centre and coordinatingagency for all material used in the school.

The school library exists to provide a range of learning opportunities forboth large and small groups as well as individuals with a focus onintellectual content, information literacy, and the learner. In addition toclassroom visits with collaborating teachers, the school library alsoserves as a place for students to do independent work, use computers, equipment and research materials; to host special events such as authorvisits and book clubs; and for tutoring and testing. School librariesfunction as a central location for all of the information available, and aschool librarian functions as the literary map to the resources andmaterials found within the library

A library needs a good librarian who should be well-qualified in libraryscience. Such a person can maintain the books properly. He can guidethe students to select suitable books. He should be cheerful and co-operative; one who can interact well with the readers. The reader easilygets the books he wants, if he consults the librarian. Thus, the guidance

of the librarian saves a lot of time of the readers. A good librarianwelcomes suggestions from readers for the improvement of the library. He purchases new books after taking into consideration the needs of thereaders. Normally, a library is housed in a very spacious hall but smalllibraries are also present in small towns and villages. The furnitureinside the library should be comfortable, neat and clean.Students/readers should maintain strict discipline, so that others are notdisturbed. The atmosphere in a library should be peaceful and scholarly.

A library has thousands of books in stock. It has books on various topics, subjects and events. New books are added from time to time. All thebooks are kept systematically. They are classified and indexed accordingto their subjects. The labelling of books helps the reader to get aparticular book without any difficulty. To find out the library number ofa particular book, one can take the help of the subject and author index. Most libraries keep a book display rack where new arrivals are kept.

A library also keeps magazines, periodicals, newspapers and journals. These are kept on the reading table of the library. The readers can keepthemselves equipped with current events and the latest developments invarious fields.

A reader should handle the books carefully so that no pages are torn orthat no books are misplaced. He should keep the book at the properplace after reading. The librarian should see than pin-drop silence ismaintained in the library. Readers should abide by the library rules.

Libraries are significant for a civil society. They contain books on various

subjects ranging from history, science, fiction, literature, fashion, health

and beauty. Books contain good thought. They ensure accessibility to

vast ocean of knowledge to common man. There are people in every

society who have craving for reading but have no money to satisfy their

urge. Libraries are blessing for such people. The concept of the

emergence of free libraries goes back to the knowledge craving of such

people. In west such libraries are provided by the philanthropist people.

Libraries contain books on various subjects. Some books are cheap but

many books are costly. An ordinary student can finds it difficult to

purchase such books. Libraries help them

Most libraries have materials arranged in a specified order according to

a library classification system, so that items may be located quickly and

collections may be browsed efficiently

Libraries are often divided into departments staffed by both

paraprofessionals and professional librarians.

Circulation – Handles user accounts and the loaning/returningand shelving of materials.

Collection Development – Orders materials and maintainsmaterials budgets.

Reference – Staffs a reference desk answering questions from usersinstructing users, and developing library programming.

Technical Services – Works behind the scenes cataloguing andprocessing new materials and deaccessioning weeded materials.

Stacks Maintenance – Re-shelves materials that have beenreturned to the library after patron use and shelves materials that

have been processed by Technical Services. Stacks Maintenancealso shelf reads the material in the stacks to ensure that it is in thecorrect library classification order.

Basic tasks in library management include the planning ofacquisitions (which materials the library should acquire, bypurchase or otherwise), library classification of acquired materials, preservation of materials, the deaccessioning of materials, patronborrowing of materials, and developing and administering librarycomputer systems

CONCLUSION

With the growing popularity of internet, which provides loads ofinformation with just a click of a mouse, one may pause to think aboutthe decreasing relevance and importance of a library in today's world. But one should keep in mind that a person goes to a library not only tosearch and get information from books but also to sit and study there. The ambience and the peaceful and scholarly atmosphere then helps oneto concentrate more on one's work and study. Thus, libraries will neverbecome redundant. They will always be there to indicate the presence ofa well-read and educated society.

The future of school libraries

There is value for schools offering the ability for an e-book lending system. We can create an ePlatform that provides schools and libraries the ability to lend out e-books in a secure manner. It also allows users to load other material onto their computers or mobile devices, such as the teacher's notes. In an article supporting e-lending systems in schools, Temple argues that they add value, stating “Students may no longer haveto carry around the same volume of paper based materials — it could completely change the way a student works
