Defensive Arts Dojo visits Eden Boys and Girls Club
After getting snowed out of the last two planned visits from the Defensive Arts Dojo of Hamburg, the Boys and Girls Club of Eden finally hosted a Self Defense Class! This dojo is very receptive of beginners, which makes them a great fit for the Club. Sensei Meredith is fun, and help-ful in explaining how to do each of the activities with the members.

In Memory of IngridI Am An Animal Rescuer
My job is to assist God's creatures.I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought, or selection.I have bought dog food with my last dime.
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.I have hugged someone vicious and afraid.
I have fallen in love a thousand times, and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body.
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends.I don't often use the word "pet".
I notice those lost at the road side,And my heart aches.
I will hand raise a field mouse,And make friends with a vulture.
I know of no creature unworthy of my time.I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven,
But I believe there are.Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind.
We may be master of the animals,But the animals have mastered themselves,
Something people still haven't learned. News of War and Abuse makes me hurt for the world,
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind. We are a quiet but determined army,
And we are making a difference every day. There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan,
nothing more rewarding than saving a life,No higher recognition than watching them thrive.
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby playwho only days ago, was too weak to eat.
I am an Animal RescuerMy work is never done,My home is never quiet
My wallet is always emptyBut my heart is always full.

CSEA message to New York State Drivers: "Don't Zone Out"
March 23-27 is National Work Zone Awareness Week. There is no better time to remind motorists about the dangers of distracted driving and driving carefully through work zones. Distracted driving is a serious problem and for CSEA, it's personal. Too many road workers lose their lives or are in-jured each year. Since recordkeeping began in 1983, nearly 50 CSEA members have lost their lives on the job in high-way work zones. These incidents are not only tragic, they are preventable."In an instant, distracted driving can kill and change lives forever," said CSEA President Danny Donohue. "Keep in mind that most traffic zone deaths and injuries involve the traveling public; so when you pay attention, the life you save may be your own."
WHAT THE PUBLIC CAN DO:Move over for amber lights, or police lights.Obey posted speed limits.Put the phone down and drive.Never send or read text messages while driving. In work zones, focus only on your driving. If someone calls you while you're driving, ignore it.Help spread the word.
Join the Don't Zone Out Facebook community and help build awareness: www.facebook.com/DontZoneOut.

Jump Rope For Heart
The Eden GLP Primary School participated in The Jump Rope For Heart Program. This was the first time the school has participated in this program. This program was sponsored by GLP Physical Education Teachers, Ms. Francisco and Mr. Bernardone. Students were informed about the importance of the heart, how it works and the importance of exercise and keeping their hearts healthy. Many forms of exercise were discussed as well as healthy foods. Also that consuming water and get-ting enough rest is important to our bodies. Students took part in jump rope skills along with jump-ing games and activities. Along with being educated on the heart and healthy hab-its, students were encouraged to raise money to support American Heart Association research. Forty students par-ticipated in The Jump Rope For Heart Program and they raised $1,042.00 in donations!!!

Master Chong’s Tae Kwon Do Visits Eden GLP
In February, Eden GLP Primary School gym classes were visited by Kevin Cudney of Master Chong’s Tae Kwon Do. Mr. Cudney did 25 minute lessons with students. He went over protocol, rules, and showed the students how to per-form Tae Kwon Do punches and kicks. He emphasized that kicks and punches should only be used in a Tae Kwon Do class and not for any other reason. Master Chong’s Tae Kwon Do also offered a five- session character development program that incorporated physical exercise with life skill lessons. This was offered to stu-dents grade K-2. All proceeds from this program were do-nated directly to Eden GLP Primary School and the Physi-cal Education Program. Most people don’t think about the filter in your car, but it helps protect those with allergies from airborne particles. It also helps keep the interior of your vehicle clean and fresh. And lastly, it purifies the air in your passenger compartment by filtering pollen, dust and other contaminants.

Summer CampsAre the kids talking about summer camp yet? ItÕs time to start investigating the pos-sibilities and get them signed up.Look into day or sleep-away camps at colleges near you. Look for math, computer and science camps run by old-er students. Drama majors especially love to introduce theater to kids. The fees for these day camps are typically fairly low.For older kids, combining sleep-away camp with their interests could lead to new career possibilities. Spending a week on a farm could lead an animal lover in the direc-tion of veterinary medicine. A water or ocean-related camp could lead to a career in ma-rine ecology. A week at video camp could open opportuni-ties in television, digital me-dia, advertising and more. When it comes to special in-terests, no matter what they are, thereÕs a camp for it. If your child wants to get a head start with SAT tests, there are prep camps for that. Pho-tography, rock music song-writing, entrepreneurship, wilderness adventure -- they all have camps. Check www.camppage.com and explore the information in the drop-down menus.
Search through the offerings at www.campresource.com. It has comprehensive list-ings of sleep-away camps, day camps, co-ed, boys, girls and traditional camps. Use the drop-down menus to search for camp types, activ-ities and locations. For kids who want a new experience, search for camps that empha-size Nashville music, rodeo riding, PGA golf or hockey. Look for teen travel camps that provide tours and camps all over the globe. Language majors can take advantage of language immersion camps and tours, and more. There’s even a roller-coast-er camp! It involves visiting amusement parks across the country in one, two, three, four and six-week camps.
For younger children thatyou want to keep nearby, check the resources aroundyou for traditional campsat recreation departments, the YMCA and churches.TheyÕre sure to provideplenty of summer activities:swimming, boating, archery, sports, arts and crafts, andsinging around the campfi re.When it comes to choosinga camp, the American CampAssociation has must-read in-formation at www.acacamps.org. Look for How to Choosea Camp: Safety Tips. Learnabout the difference betweenaccreditation versus licens-ing, questions to ask campdirectors, camper-to-counsel-or ratios and how the camphandles behavioral and disci-plinary problems.

Mitigating Water LeaksQ: I’ve read that ice dams and roof damage can lead to water leaks, but how can I fi nd them? And what can I do if I fi nd a leak? -- Janice L., Portsmouth, N.H.
A: If you’ve noticed ice buildup along your eaves out-side, it’s a good idea to check inside in those same areas for water leaks. Take a fl ashlight and go to the part of the house that’s as close as possible to the suspect area. Using the fl ashlight, check the wall and ceiling for light-brown water spots or streaks. If you see them, a leak likely has been occurring for a few days.Run your hand along the wall and ceiling around the area, whether you see water spots or not (stand on a stepladder, not a chair or furniture). If the drywall or ceiling plaster feels damp, cold or a bit spongy in one spot, a leak may be form-ing. If you smell mildew or mold in an area, dampness is a problem and may be caused by a leak. Mark this and other potential problem areas with a pencil or blue painter’s tape.
A leak needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Contact a roofi ng professional to sched-ule an inspection and get a quote to remove the ice dams and repair the roof, as well as seal up leaks. Before the contractor arrives, start minimizing the water damage indoors. Open up the wall or ceiling a bit to let wa-ter fl ow through freely. In the ceiling, punch a small hole in the center of the damp or water-stained area with a nail, and place a bucket under-neath to catch drips. Leaks behind a wall are more complicated: Often a section of drywall needs to
be cut away, as close to theleak source as possible, and a bucket or pan placed beneaththe drip. If you have no expe-rience repairing or replacingdrywall, enlist an experiencedfriend or call a contractor toquickly stop further damageuntil the roof can be repaired. You also may need to contactan electrician to make sure any wiring in a leak-affectedarea is OK.
TIP: To avoid dampness orleaks in the cellar, shovelsnow a foot or two away from the foundation when possible.

THANK YOUfor your overwhelming support regarding the town vote for the Veterans School tax exemption. The vote results were 370 in favor and 190 against. The proposal was for the max-imum exemption. Contrary to this vote, the Eden Central School Board passed a minimal exemption for Veterans.
The Veterans of Eden, who when called to serve their coun-try, did so with courage and honor. We ask for your support as we continue our quest for a well-deserved exemption.
