New regeneration plans

Developer Land Securities and Sainsbury’s have refreshed their proposals to regenerate the former Battery Park site.Overall, the derelict, former industrial and landfill site will still be transformed into a high-quality, modern mixed-use development and gateway to Birmingham. However, the updated regeneration proposals will now accommodate a Life Sciences campus.

Covering about a third of the site and conveniently located near the QE Hospital and Birmingham University Medical School, the Life Sciences campus will be a centre of research excellence, which will create jobs and be one of six of the City’s key employment zones.

What’s changed?

• A new 80,000 sq ft (7,432 sq m) Sainsbury’s foodstore to replace the existing store on Chapel Lane• An eight-pump petrol filling station• Over 1,700 surface use, undercroft and multi-storey car parking spaces• A landscaped square between Bristol Road and the Worcester and Birmingham canal• A range of shops

• A new bridge to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross over the existing Worcester and Birmingham canal linking the Bristol Road to the shopping area• New 400-bed student accommodation by the canal• A new pedestrian ‘Greenway’ linking to Selly Oak Park

Key featuresThe site will be transformed providing the following key elements:

The Triangle siteIf the proposal is approved, the ‘Triangle’ site where the existing Sainsbury’s is located, will be reused or redeveloped once highways improvements are completed and the new Sainsbury’s store has opened.

Improved local economy Around 2,700 much-needed jobs will be created, with up to 230 of these being full and part-time jobs at the new Sainsbury’s store. These are in addition to the jobs currently taken up at the existing Sainsbury’s in Selly Oak and colleagues will have the opportunity to transfer to the new store.

Improved environmentPrior to building starting, the site will be completely cleaned-up after years of use for industry and landfill. New trees will be introduced on areas of open space around the Life Sciences campus, which will have a landscaped courtyard at its core.

Improved highways and pedestrian routes The proposals include bringing forward road improvements to the highways network around the ‘Triangle’ site before the development is completed.

Initial works will include the enhancement to the turn-off onto Gibbins Road and work on Chapel Lane.

These works would not only minimise disruption to the highways but make significant improvement to the local road network.
