COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY LANDSCAPE2024 AD

INTRODUCTION

In today’s society, communication majorly plays an important role in all of the information being exchanged between living species; even plants and fungi technically speaking they do communicate with each other but what set us humans apart is the speed at which our means of communication develops and innovates. Thus major advancement in technology has helped us to communicate faster and more easily.

According to John Tudor” Technology makes it possible for people to gain control over everything, except over technology”. Technology has come so far from letters and telegraphs to emailing and extensive use of mobile phones. It’s incredible to see how much technology has indeed changed our communication channels and thus knowing where it is headed to is crucial and important in keeping up with the way of the world.

THESIS STATEMENT

Therefore this presentation will clearly identify some communication technologies and how they will be widespread by 2024 A.D. Supporting arguments on the technologies that have been chosen will be based on various theories

ROGER’S DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS

This theory was developed by E.M Rogers in 1962. His findings mainly focus on five main elements; features of the innovation that may influence its adoption, the decision making process that occurs when an individual adopts a new idea, practice or product, main features or traits of individuals that would make them likely to adopt the innovation, the resulting consequences of adopting the innovation both as a society or as an individual and finally the communication channels used in the adoption process

Explains how an idea or product gains momentum overtime and gets to spread through a specific population or social system. Diffusion theory of innovations results to people being part of a social system and adopting a new idea which mainly involves a person doing something differently than what they had previously done it.

The main idea behind diffusion is that people must perceive the product as new or innovative. However this theory does not take into account an individual’s resources or social support to adopt the new behavior. Therefore in this theory I select to discuss the future of internet and the use of personal computers

FUTURE OF INTERNET AND PC’S

The current PC’s are able to do so much for us today, however they in the next few years they will do even much more. The current PC’s allows people to do more by touching a lot by use of mouse or the touch pad or stylus pen. However in the near future PC’s and internet would essentially become touch less and may be run of voice.

Owning of PC’s and having access to the internet will be mandatory in the near future since it could be very difficult to work and function well without the help of the two kind of communication technology. The world today is now moving to an era of using internet and computers for must part of the work.

Therefore from the theory of diffusion of innovations then the idea of use of computers and internet will be widely welcomed by most individuals and thus get adopted easily. Hence more innovation in the area will be down so that new functionalities will suit their customers.

UMBRELLA PERSPECTIVE OF COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES

(Grant and Meadows, 2010) states that this theory involves the hardware equipment, organizational structures and social values by which individuals collect, process and exchange information with other individuals. The components include;

Hardware. Refers to the technology itself used.

Software. Content of the communication used

Infrastructure. Those involved in the distribution of production.

Social system. The media, economic and political systems used.

Individual users. Those who are the potential users.

For this theory I choose to discus on the social sites as a communication technology e.g. face book, twitter,

SOCIAL SITES

In the old days the numbers of social sites available were few or none but currently there are some and in the near future more of them will be innovated so as to serve various groups of people across the divide. E.g. use of Face book has been in use and in future it will dominate the world. This is because it allows users to be able to access various services under one roof. For example personalization of the profile, joining groups and it’s readily available.

Most of the Smartphone and laptops or PC’s allows one to connect more often and easier since they have application that will run it. On the other hand Microsoft has integrated social media into their plan making it easier to update. Therefore in the near future we expect that the social sites to be at a higher level in terms of advancement in how they work in order to be able to serve its current users with the emerging trends.

USES AND GRATIFICATION THEORY

This theory majorly understands why and how people actively seek out specific needs so as to satisfy their wants. In order to understand mass communication this theory is audience centered. Mostly it answers what people do with media not what media does to people, how do people use media at their convenience? It mainly focuses on ensuring that people get satisfied in what they are using and all their needs are being satisfied. For this theory I aim to clearly show how electronic readers where it is headed to in future.

E- READERS

In the past people used to visit libraries to read books, journals, newspapers, magazines and etc. even in schools most of the students had to attend classes for their lessons and exams. But in future we look to a world that is completely moved from those old ways of doing things. Most universities will offer their courses online due the availability of internet and more use of PC’s for their studies and exams.

Online exams and reading will be part and parcel of most students in future. Lectures will deliver their tutorials via a video link that the students will access. This majorly will help student to attend to other duties while being students hence the ability to multitask a feature that is common among human beings.

Availability of tablets will indeed do away with book industry immediately. The compact device is sleek, easy to use and above all takes little or minimal space thus being portable for any student who could wish to read anywhere. Thus society needs this over a book for the simple fact that we are in the digital era thus in therefore in the near future books will be completely done away with
