WHAT DO YOU WANT? OR WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Seattle resdiente Alex Martin made a dress. She washed it frequently, wore it with different accesories, and hardly anyone noticed that she had it on every day for a whole year. Martin was pretesting over-consumption and the intensive marketing that pushes us to by "sfuff."

Most of us are not going to stop shopping, bu we could ask ourselves whey we focus so much on outward appearance.

Do we give equal attention to our inner self? In today's first reading Solomon could have prayed for more riches, the defeat of his enemies, or long life. Instead, he asks for a heart that knows right from wrong in order to fulfill his kingly responsabilities.

God grants him wisdom, and he uses the gift for the good of all. Perhaps you dream of winning the lottery or making a fortune. Pray, rather, for the inner gitfs you need to help build the Kingdom of God.

? QUE QUIERES? O ?QUE NECESITAS? Alex Martin, una residente de Seattle, se hizo un vestido. Le damos la misma atención a nuestra belleza interior? En la primera lectura de hoy Salomón hubiera podido pedirle más riquezas, la derrota de sus enemigos o una larga vida. Pero en lugar de eso el pidió una sabiduría de corazón que le indicara lo que es correcto y lo que está mal, a fin de poder cumplir sus responsabilidades de rey. Dios le concede la sabiduría y Salomón la usa para beneficio de todos en vez de su propio beneficio. Tal vez suenes con ganarte la lotería o hacer una fortuna. ¿Qué estás buscando en la vida? Todos están buscando algo. Los niños anhelan un juguete o juego especial. Los adolescentes buscan novio o novia o éxito en la escuela. Los trabajadores podrían estar buscando la próxima gran oportunidad profesional. Las personas de cualquier edad podrían desear seguridad financiera o tranquilidad.

El Evangelio de hoy nos presenta a alguien que también es un buscador: un comerciante en busca de perlas finas. Como muchos de nosotros, este comerciante está buscando algo específico. Y en medio de su búsqueda, encuentra algo mucho más maravilloso de lo que esperaba: una sola perla de valor superior, una "perla de gran precio" (Mateo 13:46). Al verlo, abandona la búsqueda de esas "perlas finas". Se compromete plenamente a obtener esa hermosa perla, tanto que vende todo lo demás para poder comprarla.

Seguramente el comerciante no pudo vender todo de una vez. Probablemente hubo momentos en que dudaba de sí mismo. Pero siguió así, día tras día, artículo tras artículo, hasta que finalmente lo tuvo: la perla de sus sueños. ¡Por fin estaba contento!

Jesús dice que este comerciante nos muestra cómo es el reino de los cielos. Está formado por personas como nosotros, en busca de la felicidad. De alguna manera, las cosas que buscamos pueden hacernos felices. Pero encontrar a Jesús y ser parte de su reino supera con creces la felicidad que cualquier otra cosa puede brindar. En él encontramos la respuesta a nuestros más profundos anhelos de amor y reconciliación. Por seguridad y cumplimiento. Por propósito y significado.

No se equivoque: las cosas que anhelamos a menudo pueden ser buenas. Pero recuerda al comerciante. No había nada malo con las perlas con las que estaba intercambiando. Sin embargo, las vendió todas por esa perla de gran precio.

Reflecting on God’s Word The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. (Matthew 13:45) What are you looking for in life? Everybody is searching for something. Children long for a special toy or game. Teenagers look for a boyfriend or girlfriend or success at school. Working people might be seeking out the next big career opportunity. People of any age could be wanting financial security or peace of mind. Today’s Gospel introduces us to someone who is also a seeker: a merchant on a quest for fine pearls. Like many of us, this merchant is searching for something specific. And in the midst of his search, he finds something far more wonderful than what he expected: one single pearl of surpassing value, a “pearl of great price” (Matthew 13:46). Seeing it, he gives up the search for those “fine pearls.” He commits himself fully to obtaining that one beautiful pearl—so much so that he sells everything else so that he can buy it. Surely the merchant wasn’t able to sell everything all at once. There were probably times when he doubted himself. But he kept at it, day after day, item after item, until he finally had it—the pearl of his dreams. At last he was content! Jesus says this merchant shows us what the kingdom of heaven is like. It is made up of people like us, searching for happiness. In some ways, the things we seek can make us happy. But finding Jesus and being part of his kingdom far surpasses the happiness that anything else can give. In him we find the answer to our deepest longings for love and reconciliation. For security and fulfillment. For purpose and meaning. Make no mistake: things we long for can often be good things. But remember the merchant. There was nothing wrong with the pearls he was trading in. Yet he sold all of them for that one pearl of great price. From The Word among Us- July 2020
