Our Lady, The Light of Lexington
By: Fr. William Virgin Mother of God, hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with you;
blessed are you among women; and blessed is the fruit of your womb; for
you gave birth to the Saviour of our souls. [The hymn Theotoke Parthene, from the Service of the Artoklasia]
To the rest of the world, September is a month like any other. Aside from
the fact that it marks the end of the summer, and the beginning of fall, the
most remarkable thing that may be said about it is that there is a last
opportunity to invite friends over for a cookout. For those of us at Holy
Mother Queen of All, however, September is a month filled with the power, majesty, and
glory of the Lord. In addition to marking the celebration of the Creation of the world,
September is the month where we, the members of the Body of Christ in Lexington, KY, recall
one of the greatest blessings He has bestowed on our community. It is a time when beauty
makes itself real in the lives, and love illuminates the hearts of those who choose to seize this
blessing. It is the time, my friends, when we celebrate our Parish Feast, the Nativity of the
Theotokos. And it is a time when all eyes are turned toward our unique icon of the Theotokos
Panagia Pantovasilissa!
We each have a chance to gather together and meditate on that unique image of Our Lady that
unites us together as a community. We have a chance to reflect on how we might each, in our
own lives, speak with Her as She offers Her response to God “Let it be done to me according
to Thy will.” We have a chance to choose to prayerfully consider how we, ourselves, might
get a little farther from the world, and a little closer to God. And this chance is a blessing that
presents itself but once a year. If we seize the opportunity, we find that grace and wisdom
establish themselves in our heart, and the meaning of our unity in our Parish Feast is made
known to our soul. Indeed, if we gather together to celebrate this Feast, we shall find that we
are armoured with the power of Christ and covered by the loving intercession of His Mother.

Our Feast is the time when we remember that
the protection of the Theotokos covers the city
of Lexington as surely as it covered the
Christians of the Roman Empire so many
centuries ago. Our Feast is the time when we
remember that She whose icon stands in our
iconostasis stands with us today as surely as
She stood with all of our ancestors who fought
for freedom from the tyrannical oppression and
terrible persecutions of the enemies of the
Church. And our Feast is the time when She
calls us to stand together with Her as She seeks
to pour the Light which is Her Son upon the
people of the city in which we dwell. For, truly,
the Theotokos is the Light of Lexington, by
virtue of the Son She bore. But most of all, my
friends, it is the time when we offer Her our
thanks for giving us Her Son, to Whom we owe
our salvation.
The Theotokos always offers intercessory
prayers for all of those who faithfully hymn Her and keep Her feasts. We must run to Her in
humility, seeking Her protection, as surely as we look to Her Son for our salvation. We must
run to Her in thanksgiving, seeking to make known to Her our gratitude for Her unceasing
prayers on our behalf. And we must run to Her in eagerness and urgency; for the time, my
friends, is nigh! We will be celebrating Vespers for the Feast. We will be offering up the
sacred bread, wheat, wine, and oil to be sanctified by the Son born of the Theotokos. And, at
the climax of the service, we will raise our voices in that sacred and ancient hymn, Theotoke
Parthene. All of this will be taking place on September 7, starting at 6 PM. Where will you
be?

the blessings with which God
presents us through the intercession

I am struggling to succinctly summarize
my 'Stories from the Seminary’; I have had
so many positive uplifting experiences to
share I am having trouble deciding!
However, I would like to once again thank
every single one of our parishioners from
Panagia Pantovasilissa! Every single one
of you, (Tessa included), have inspired and
supported me on this journey to Holy Cross
Greek Orthodox School of Theology. I
would like to take this opportunity to
update everyone on my upcoming projects. For my “Youth Ministry” course fieldwork this
coming year, I will be executing a JOY/HOPE group for the children who live on campus. Fellow
seminarians have approached me to assist writing the Orthodox Life curriculum for the
Metropolis of Detroit Summer Camp in Rose City, Michigan this summer. Last of all but not
least, I have been tasked with organizing the female students into rotating Narthex maintenance
groups. Without my tiny, but incredibly beautifully welcoming parish’s emotional and fiscal
support I do not think I could have obtained these oppurtunites. Thank y’all again! Please drop a

any or all of you; and would like to take you to chapel on the Holy Hill!

Philoptochos Corner By: Carolyn Janssen We are not a large parish but we are an active one and I am so proud of what we accomplish
thanks to a loving and generous community, willing to contribute too many causes that
Philoptochos takes on every year. Our Pastry Sale provides us with the means to contribute to
many different causes. To the National organization in the event of a national emergency we
contribute what we can. In addition throughout the year we have monthly commitments. In
September we are asked to make a commitment to Hellenic College Holy Cross Scholarship Fund
which provides tuition scholarships to worthy and dedicated students, both men and women at
Hellenic College and seminarians at Holy Cross. Locally, last month Hospice Care Centers were
in need of comfort supplies for patients and their families and thank you all for your generous
donations.
Through the month of September we will be collecting donations for Dress for Success. Dress for
Success is a non-profit organized in 1997 to answer the needs of low-income women seeking
employment and self-sufficiency. They provide instruction on interviewing, resume building,
access to computers, provide their clients with business attire for interviews and once employed
a week’s worth of additional job appropriate attire. As the seasons change it’s time to take a look
at the contents of our closets. We will have a flyer available in the Philoptochos Corner listing
the items that Dress for Success is looking for. Thank you in advance for your help.

Art Auction Fundraiser + October 19!
Holy Mother Queen of All (Panagia Pantovasilissa) will be hosting an art auction on October
19, 2019. The preview is at 6:00 PM and the auction begins at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $20.00
per person. See the flyer. Vlad Radulescu is the chair of the committee for the art auction and
he will be calling on some of you to help with the auction.
We will be limiting the number of attendees to around 180. We receive a commission of the
artwork sold such that the tickets should be sold to potential art buyers. The company handling
the auction is Marlin Art of New York. You can go to their website www.marlinart.com and
purchase art prior to the auction. If you note that you are purchasing for Holy Mother queen
of All we will receive credit. Marlin Art company is a reputable art company that has been in
business for over 50 years. Some art auction committee members have dealt with Marlin for
over 20 years without any complaints from buyers.
There are several reasons why you should attend the auction and invite your colleagues and
friends:
A. It is fun. If you have never been to an art auction you will enjoy learning about
art and artists. You will also enjoy watching a lively auction going on for the
same piece of art. An entire evening of fun for two people at a cost of $40.00.
B. The company doing the auction is reputable. They will not allow you to
overbid the retail value of an artwork.
C. There is no high pressure to buy. Buy only what you want.
D. All art is professionally framed.
E. No sales tax.
F. If you like a piece of art but it is stretching your budget, payments can be made
on a credit card over several months with no interest.
G. You can request on your ticket that hand-blown glass, sculptures, jewelry, and
sports memorabilia can be brought to the auction by Marlin in case you are
running out of wall space.
H. The artwork makes an impressive home warming gift for family and friends.
If you need a ticket(s) or willing to sell tickets to
people, please contact Ron Adkins. He will supply
you with tickets. The ticket buyer needs to fill out the
bottom of the ticket with any art requests along with
$20.00 for the ticket. We need to have the tickets sold
and art requests sent to Marlin Art by October 4. As
such, all monies and tickets stubs need to be returned
to Ron Adkins by October 4.
