Introduction

FlyHigh Fun Grammar is a series of three grammar

books for young learners. It accompanies and

complements the FlyHigh Pupil's Books levels 2-4.

FlyHigh Fun Grammar books have been designed toenable young learners to study and practise English

grammar in a clear, comprehensible and motivating

way. In particular, FlyHigh Fun Grammar:

• familiarises young learners with grammar structures

through amusing and thought-provoking contexts

that relate to both their age and level.

• clarifies key points using comprehensible

grammar boxes .

• offers integrated practice, which helps establish a

firm knowledge of grammar and builds confidence

so that learners can use it independently.

Fly High 3 Fun Grammar

Fly High 3 Fun Grammar consists of:

• an introductory lesson : 'Hello, girls and boys!'. This

introductory lesson greets the children in a fun way

and familiarises them with the characters of the zoo.

• fifteen units that clearly explain and thoroughly

practise the grammar encountered in FlyHigh 3

Pupil's Book .

• seven Review lessons which appear regularly

throughout the book.

• three term tests (I can do this! 1, 2, 3) and one

end-of-year test (Look what I can dol).

• FlyHigh 3 Fun GrammarAudio CD with all the

presentations and explanations, as well as the

recordings for the listening and speaking tasks .

Throughout the book, the grammar is introduced

in the same sequence as in Fly High 3 Pupil 's Book .

Nevertheless, it is possible for teachers to present the

grammar structures in an alternative order, depending

on the specific needs of their classes .

Grammar presentations

The overall approach of FlyHigh Fun Grammar is bu

around learning and practising new language. The

FlyHigh characters first present each new grammar

structure. Then follows a grammar box that explains

the structure and practice exercises where target

vocabulary is recycled .

Grammar boxes

Grammar boxes present each key structure to the

children. The key points of each grammar structure

are also explained with examples that clarify use . It

important that teachers draw the children's attention

to these grammar boxes and encourage the children

to refer to them in class and at home. Both grammar

theory and examples are included on the FlyHigh 3

GrammarAudio CD, providing a unique opportunity

further consolidation.

Exercises

Each presentation and grammar box is followed by

exercises related to the structure covered. The conten

of the exercises addresses young learners with

constant recycling of previously presented vocabular

These exercises have been carefully constructed to le

learners smoothly through the assimilation process .While initially more controlled, they progressively

provide freer practice so as to assist in building learn

confidence. An example is usually provided to make

the task as clear as possible.

Listening and speaking activities

Another innovative feature of FlyHigh Fun Grammar

its listening and speaking activities :

Let's Chat This style of activity provides an exampledialogue, which teachers can use as a model structu

to cue dialogues and role playing. Teachers can also

use realia prompts and/or the FlyHigh 3 Vocabulary

Flashcards to build upon these structures and to crea

additional activities. Additional example dialogues fo

all Let's Chat activities are found on the FlyHigh 3 Fu

GrammarAudio CD, providing further audio support.

Procedure for teaching Lefs Chatactivities

• Focus attention on the Let's Chat box. Ask the

children to look at the pictures and dialogue.

• Read the example dialogue. Have the children repeat.

• Play the CD with the additional example dialogues.

Ask children to listen carefully. Pause after each

dialogue and ask children to repeat. The audioscript

for these dialogues can be found in the answer key.

• Ask children to work in pairs and to write and

perform their own dialogue. Use prompts or

flashcards to help them with vocabulary.

Let's PlayThis type of activity consists of games which

the children play using the grammar structure and for

which no preparation is necessary. The presentation

on the page provides a model. which teachers can useto introduce the game and language to students. The

teacher can then lead the whole class or have students

play in pairs or groups.

Procedure for teaching Lefs Play activities

• Ask the children to look at the Let's Play box and

read the a m p l e dialogue.

• Demonstrate the game with the class. This can be

done as follows:

1 The teacher takes role A and has the whole class

respond in role B.

2 The teacher takes role A and has individual

children take role B.

3 Two children take roles A and B n open pairs.

• Play the CD with the additional example dialogues.

Ask the children to listen carefully. Pause after

each dialogue and ask the children to repeat. Theaudioscript for these dialogues can be found in the

answer key.

• When the children understand the game, put them

into closed pairs and have them play the game.

Walk around the class and monitor.

• Alternatively you can divide the class in two teams

One team takes role A and the other takes role B

Play the game. Each correct answer gains a point

Let's Sing The songs from Fly High 3 Pupil's Book are

further exploited through different types of listening

exercises in Let's Sing. These include gap-fill and order

activities. The songs also provide an opportunity for

the teacher to have students sing. All the songs for

Let's Sing exercises are included on the Fly High 3 Fu

Grammar Audio CD

Review lessons

Regularly throughout the book, Fun GrammarReview

lessons consolidate the grammar covered through

simple exercises. These are CYLET (Cambridge Youn

Learners English Tests) type exercises that can be dowith very little guidance from the teacher. Every Revie

lesson ends with a special self-assessment section,

My English. The children are asked to consolidate wh

they have achieved with a writing task and then draw

one of three faces depending on their confidence wi

the topic.

I can do this!ILook what I can do!

At the end of the book, there are three I can do this !

term tests and a Look what I can dOl end-of-year tes

These tests include numerous CYLET type exercises

and revise grammar in a motivating way.

Fly High 3 Fun Grammar

Teacher's Guide

The Teacher's Guide consists of:

• a general introduction to Fly High 3 Fun Gramr-_with tips designed to assist the teacher in ma

the most of the material in Fly High 3 Fun Grarrr.:

• a key to the exercises for every unit and review '

High Fun Grammar.

• the audioscripts for the listening exercises .

• seven quizzes (one for use after each Review

lesson), which assess the children's progress.

Teaching tips

Presentations

• ':'5 the children to memorise the characters' lines in

- e presentation (in class or as homework), so that

- ey can then act them out in class . Alternatively ask

- e children to work in pairs or groups to produce

- eir own version of the presentation.

• : .rite the key grommar structure on the board

issing out some of the items. For example, write

: am - I'm, You are -__ __ He's.Ask the

ch ildren to complete the missing words.

Grammar boxes

- e grammar boxes are a useful tool, as they provide

"ecessary information on form and/or function.

• Read through the grammar box along with the class .

• Invite children to give their own examples of

the grammatical structure before you list further

examples on the board.

• Once children appear comfortable with the

new grammar, invite them to look through the

presentation and find all the instances of the

target structure.

Exercises

• Clear and simple instructions are given with the

first item in each exercise usually done as an

example. This renders the exercises suitable for

homework, even in the case of very young children.

Nevertheless, it is important that children are

confident about what they are expected to do .

Therefore, it is a good idea to do one or two more

items together in class, or go through an item orally

first. The exercise can then be set for homework.

This will ass ist any children who initially found the

exercise too difficult to do it confidently on their ow

at home.

• Whenever children find an exercise hard, encoura

them to ask questions. They can be guided

through an exercise or directed towards finding the

answer themselves.

• Encourage children to decide for themselves wheth

answers are correct or not while doing an exercise

class, rather than merely reading out the answer ke

This gives the teacher the chance to monitor how w

the learners have understood the new concept. Wh

most children should have no trouble producing

the correct answers immediately, any confusion will

indicate that further practice is required.

Review lessons

The Review lessons give the teacher the chance to

monitor children's progress. They are also indicative o

which grammar areas might require further practice.

Review lessons can be done in class formally or be se

as homework, as preparation for a different class test

Quizzes and term tests in Fly High 3

Fun GrammarTeacher's Guide

There are seven photocopiable quizzes and three

term tests in FlyHigh 3 Fun GrammarTeacher's Guide

corresponding to the material covered in Fly High 3 F

GrammarPupil's Book. These provide a quick and ea

way to evaluate the children's understanding of new

structures. The types of exercise are familiar, so that th

children will never feel at a loss when doing an activit

Rewarding the children for their effort is a good way t

relieve them of test anxiety. A good idea is to award

'performance stickers' rather than actual scores for

each quiz or test.
